Sounds like a Mutron for each pick up. Very cool. Flip side of coin pre amp wise when you aren't looking for super clean tones. My Sire V7 might surgery after my custom jazz bass build with the Audere JZ6Pro.

honestly, unless you're just looking for straight boost, filter is the way I imagined preamps were supposed to be done when I first learned about onboard preamps but I didn't understand it that well until 6-12 months ago. Passive boost is actually pretty easy to generate - at some point a parameter is limited by the attributes in your pickup, but there's nothing preventing one from installing two or more different pickups in the same instrument. Henrik Danhage's Charvel sig guitar is like this - comes from the factory with a Seymour Duncan in the bridge position and a DMZ in the neck, literally OEM with two major mfr pickups in them...and that thing RIPS. One of the few Strat-types I'd ever own. Point being...I am interested in seeing a variety of pickups with this preamp because it's worth checking into and your bass playing audience will have a wide variety of pickups across the same application in their existing instruments; it also gives them a greater variety of options to choose from in the marketplace they've seen tested in front of them, install to uninstall. You are going to get a lot of new subs with this series, and smart companies have paid attention to your reasonable yet steady growth - they know too. If Serek has built a preamp yet, it's time for them to put it against the heavies. If it's filter-based, which would be HELLA cool.
I tried just about every filter pedal I could get my hands on until I found the absolute holy grail and although the preamp is cool it isnt going to do what my filter pedal does. I would prefer equalisation onbboard. It is a neat preamp if its your cup of tea.
I think the fact that Alembic and Wal use NFP preamps in their basses says enough about how good they can sound. Both companies fit their basses with humbucking pickups though, and I think that is the best pairing for an NFP preamp. I really want to build a bass with an NFP preamp paired with Wal style multicoil pickups. A few companies make replica Wal pickups in MM sized shells, like Rautia Guitars, Herrick pickups, and HotWire pickups. Trying to replicate the Wal tone without spending $10k on a used one or waiting 5+ years for a new one might be a cool idea for a video.
Well actually alembic basses (atleast the series/stanly clarke basses) use low impedance single coil pickups with a dummy coil between them to cancel out hum.
Amazing tonal possibilities but, in the studio I'd be paranoid of losing a "perfect" setting with the slightest nudge or slip, on a gig maybe even blowing an amp or PA system via D.I.. Matching tones for drop-ins at a later date may also pose headaches of its own in the studio I do feel a preamp this wide ranging would be better served by multi detent knobs (so you could at least feel and remember clicks) or at the very least it could use numbered dials like speed knobs. Overall though a superb range of possibilities Very nice 😊
Only the big lobster make the coolest mod bass review on youtube, great man I'm very curious about this new series of preamp review. I hear incredibly video about this preamp that change your mm or jazz in a Wal bass sound, you confirm it also on your sire? Thanks man!!!
Have you ever tried an ACG eq-01? John East helped design them and they're a seriously extreme version of a filter preamp. I found the ACG unusable in the bass I was altering but this one seems way more practical.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been curious about his drop in jazz nfps. I’ve got a blacktop jazz (dual precision configuration) coming in and I was thinking about using one of these in it. I’ve already been talking with Nuno about a stingray HH dual nfp. I’m going to use herricks 8 pole humbucker per string pickup in the bridge and their split coil in the neck(which can be a precision, a reverse precision and full mm humbucker). Yeah going a little nuts but you know, go for broke. Lol. Also currently lusithand has a one month waiting list for custom nfps.
Thanks Dean! That sounds like a KILLER project! Trying to get Herrick on board to do a Stingray H (SUB) mod going, but we may end up taking it in another direction ;). We shall see! Best of luck with your mod project! I know that my videos won't do any favors for the Lusithand wait list other than making it grow ;P. I loove the NFP in my fretless. I actually sent this particular pre to Jake Serek, hoping he does something cool with it
@@deangomes6280 Yeah man! I texted Jake and was like "You have a preamp incoming... you will really dig it". I think he's going to be messing with it soon. I wonder too why this system needs to be active. Isn't this setup comparable to an old Jazz bass with two individual tone knobs or, if you will, with a duo stellar tone tonestyler?
Tone knobs only resonate around one frequency and resonate less as you go up in capacitance (darker tone). These pre amps change the resonate frequency and boost just as much everywhere
Hi there. Yes, it is different. The preamp uses a Sallen Key sonfiguration filter with a resonant peak that can also be boosted having a much stronger presence on the cutoff point of the filters. Now, a Passive tone cannot do that. The booster, as you suggest, boosts the whole range of frequencies, whereas our preamp boosts only a resonant peak at the cutoff point. Going with your suggestion would result in a Passive tone acting as a passive tone but on a louder overall signal; nothing would change rather than being louder.
It would be cool to make a Preamp/DI pedal out of the Sire Preamp. I don't use it much on my V3 because it messes up with the input volume of my pedals. But if it was at the end of the board it would be very useful.
Now you're thinking. I prefer my jazz bass passive but I find I need a boost when using certain pedals, especially envelope filters. Rather than installing a preamp into my bass I would definitely prefer making a preamp pedal out of an onboard preamp. Can use it with other basses as well.
The things is that normal Jazzbass pickups are high impedance devices (> 10kOhm) and therefore have realtively low resonance frequencies. Alembic and Wal (and also Musicman) use low impedance pickups (< 2kOhm) with resonance frequencies above 10 kHz. With low impedance pickups you have the full audio spectrum which can be filtered to the desired frequency. High impedance pickups like JB pickups have a much lower frequency spectrum (up to 3-4 kHz) so these filters do not work 100%. For low impedance JB-pickups you can use noiseless ones and rewire the coils to parallel (normally they are wired in series) - the result is lower output but a much higher cutoff frequency.... By the way: the relatively low output of low impedance pickups is the reason why Alembic and Wal basses (and most Stingrays) are active only....
Lobster!! Cut to the chase!!?? In the last couple videos I saw quite a few of your herd of instruments. Didn't see an Alembic any where? Or was i snoozing??
Yes. You want to make sure you're using good pickups and have good shielding for the best experience. The fender ultra USA I believe uses the noiseless J's, so you should have a good time with this
Sick! With the filter boosting the low mids that bass almost sounds like a synth bass. I think I'd rather prefer using filters like this in an outboard preamp/stompbox with the addition of a blend/mix control to dial in the amount of the filtered sound. Interesting stuff, indeed.
Hi Lobster hand😉.. It would be much nicer to have a mod like that if it actually got rid of the noise of the single coils without having to switch to noiseless pickups, because under the circumstances, I think I’d rather just use external filters and not even modify the bass. I don’t think the potential extra mixed tones you get from being able to filter both coils separately is necessarily worth the extra work or expense.. I can get enough of those tones from filter comps in my signal chain. 🥳 Nice idea though for people who want to run that way. One other thing, one of the guys mentioned that the knob rotations are critical for the different tones, which I also think is a little bit of an issue.. I can make all my modifications incrementally (digitally), so if I find a certain setting is perfect, control is it 52 let’s say, then I know I could always get back to the exact same spot without questioning whether it is actually the same spot.

Hey James! Absolutely apples to oranges, the whole comparison pretty much is. We have two, three, and four band EQs on the table plus this crazy double filter. I'd rather have a bass wired with with a TRS jack to get both pickups individually. I did this to a guitar to separate the magnetic pickups from the bridge piezo and it worked great. Then output the bass to a pedal with these dual filters for each pickup from the TRS jack. Not saying it's not a useful preamp just that I would not want it onboard the bass.

Does this preamp boost only or boost and cut?
WHERE ARE THE LOW END LOBSTER SHIRTS?
So why wouldn't you just unsolder the jack instead of drilling a bigger hole in your bass??
Great question Mike! It's because I'm doing 5 of these preamps and drilling a hole once is a lot easier than snipping and resoldering jacks over and over again lol.
Some of the links are showing up as Private.
Correct. The videos are being released daily this week. They'll all be out by Saturday if you want to binge watch. The order in the description is the release schedule, so tomorrow will be the Sadowsky
Not a fan of that preamp I must say. To each it's own. You may think there is alot of tones coming from this preamp but very few usable tones in my opinion.
Have you played one?
Hmmmm, nice review but the pre is not for me.

To much buzz for me
Shiiiiiiiiit... I just might have GAS again... But that price is extremely high. Sad face.
