- On the 9th of April 2022, I premiered my Gran Turismo iceberg video, which featured over forty minutes' worth of facts and trivia about the GT series of games.
However, there was once piece of trivia in particular which remained unsolved...
In May 2013, Gran Turismo released a 15th anniversary trailer ahead of the release of Gran Turismo 6.
In the trailer, we see Jann Mardenborough race against some opponents, including a mysterious white car. And this car is the reason that this trailer made it into the iceberg video at all. The fact is that this car doesn't seem to exist in Gran Turismo 4. It doesn't even seem to exist across the entire series of Gran Turismo games. So what is it doing here in this trailer, and what actually is it?

How's that for a plot twist, huh? This might mean the trailer was outsourced, and those responsible had no access to a build of GT6 with Silverstone, so they did the next best thing, like an artist working with less-than-optimal reference.
Definitely outsourced and made by another studio, Humster3D actually makes very high quality 3D models of every car in existence. The R34 and the Saleen S7 were also made by them.

I think its usual R34 blue and orange Saleen and its transparency effect and not ideal rendering of the model that makes it look odd.
Same with the unusually vibrant red R35 GT-R

These generic 3D model cars are actually way more common than you think. You will find them in stock photos (insurance advertisements, travel brochures, billboards, etc.), movies, and even video games. Three Fields Entertainment's games do not use their own cars, they use car models from Squir instead.
Well yeah sure. But to have it featured in a racing sim franchise is on a dozen different levels, let alone a prestigious anniversary trailer for said racing sim franchise.
My bet is on someone that outsourced the trailer having family or friends in the studio to boost their career. This cannot possibly have gone unnoticed through quality assurance before it went live.
A petition to add the Generic Sports Car 2 by Humster3D to GT7 has gotta be started soon

I believe the colours are poorly shaded and most importantly transparent, so the skyline is in what should be Bayside blue, the Saleen in a metallic orange, etc
Given Polyphony's near psychotic attention to detail, I'm surprised at the level of inaccuracy in the trailer. You'd think they'd make sure every single car matched every game. But only the R35 for GT5 is actually accurate

These guesses were super braindead, kudos to Matt for being humble and patient enough to read through these awful guesses with a non judgemental voice but holy shit was it painful.
I had never heard of Arash before, but that was the best guess out of all of them. Look how close the canopy, taillights and boxy rear fenders were to the "mystery car" in question. Even though it wasn't an exact match, that was a good shout from Victor.

I'll be honest, that was an anticlimactic ending, but at least we got an answer.
Anticlimactic? Not really lot of us made good guesses but never expect them to use a dumb generic car that could been used to everyone else.

I wonder now that we know what it is, if the modding community for GT5 and GT6 would be able to bring this car in some how. They are already tinkering with bringing GT4 cars into the games (mainly GT5 I believe) so it would be cool to have this be a "community concept car" of sorts. Really cool video nonetheless, mystery solved!

Also, the cars are not shown with unique special colors, it's the transparecy that they applied to them that is messing with the color mix.

Was a little confused until the reveal because I was thinking that none of them had those arched lines between the tail lights, that's the one thing none of those other cars had going for them. Fun video as always, Matt! I'm not much of a car guy, but something about Gran Turismo as well as your videos brings it out of me.

I was gonna say, that mystery car looks like an amalgamation of several other cars into one, something you'd expect from another video game or some kind of studio.
call me crazy but to me it looks like a combination of a C6 Corvette and a Lykan HyperSport...
This fictional car kind of reminds me of the El Nino an unlockable fictional car from Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 3 on PS1.

I was half expecting the whole video to be a clickbait, but it turned out to be a perfect build-up for an anticlimactic reveal of the century.
Here I was thinking it was an early NIssan VGT... My childhood is ruined.

Probably because the entire trailer was outsourced. That would explain the weird 'inaccuracies' with the 'poster cars' not actually totally matching the games they're representing, or even being featured in colors that you can't use in the games, as well as the generic 3D stock car model.

GT1: R33 GT-R
GT2: MK IV Supra
GT3: FD RX7
GT4: GT LM Race Car
GT5: GT by Citroen
GT6: Corvette C7

At 2:34 you say the car represent GT4, at 3:54 & 5:02 the comments says GT6, and at 6:16 you say the car represent GT5... lol anyway great video :)

The mystery car looked very off to me when I saw it in the original video. At first I thought it was some sort of kit car. The way it's designed doesn't look like something that would come out off an official manufacturer. It just has this GTA or even more so Saints Row car design language to it. So I was pleased to learn it wasn't a real car and is purely fantasy.
I actually thought it might be that 2001 Nissan GTR concept car LM version from Gran Turismo Concept with just the wing chopped off and a white wrap 😅

that mistery car is really similar to a car that i designed. i called mine ''SSR'', the only difference is the air intake on the side of the car but apart from this is almost identical

The first VGT, this was a prequel of what was to come
The colours are the common colours such as the blue GTR or the Orange Saleen but it's supposed to be like a "ghost," and it ends up making the colours look more faded

My guess was that it was a Noble M600 (has the exact same taillights and roughly the same shape), never would’ve guessed it was just some random 3d model

I'm guessing that the outsourced marketing team picked that particular "generic" car because they thought it kinda looks like mid-engined R35.
The company did wrong some parts and I think what they intended is cause intruge about the game and hell they did.
I'm guessing cheap labour where lightning effects dont matter at all.

Feels weird that with the wide portafolio that Polyphony has it would allow some generic supercar to be used but assuming that the video was outsourced could explain it.. kinda wish that it would stayed a mystery, it really lifted the mystique of not knowing.
Well, the mystery has been solved once and for all. Too be honest, that car looks like a cross between the Corvette C8 and the Nissan GT-R R35. Now, can someone explain the "Hmmmmmm" sign?

Lets be real, that was supposed to represent the GTR R36, this car didn't exist and still doesn't.
They just needed to put something there to go with the other Nissans, because theres no way that car isnt a Nissan, everyone knows how the round brake lights are common in the skyline / GTR models
The R34 GTR wasn't even a thing when GT1 launched, same as the S7 for GT2
the GT-R50 Proto would be such a blast to have. an R35 that has enough power to rival a Hellcat on paper. imagine how much of a beast this car would be on tracks like fuji speedway 80s, chicaneless sarthe, high speed ring, and any oval tracks.
Now I want to see someone make that car in real life as a one off

Test mule C7 Corvette is my opinion. Note a correction to your comment of Callaway never being in GT. The 03 Callaway C12 appeared in GT4, 5 and 6.
Before watching the reveal or reading any comments. I think it is some sort of widebody version of a gtr concept.
