John deserves a medal for this. Robert made this VERY difficult and John still managed to get it done. In his defense, Robert did seem to do a bit better by the end. Major kudos to John on this one.
JB was in way over his head with this crazy dude but did a sensational job of keeping him on track whist maintaining decorum. Sometimes the best part of rig rundown videos is watching JB ride these broncos!!
I saw Robert play at a blues festival in Allen, TX a few years back. Let me tell you, he put his whole heart and soul into that performance and when he was done, the house was a-rockin.
Hey, remember back to the first Crossroads when he was humble and down-to-earth? =| His playing's only gotten better, tho, I'd say. Maybe he'll come back down to earth and bring his skills with him one of these days.
You’d prefer a President you could have a beer with? A Maverick? A real Washington Outsider? “He who is the most impertinent has the best chance” -Leopold Mozart
His playing is truly unbelievable. I'm fully aware it sounds amazing as is, but I'd like to hear him play it with the "traditional" pedal steel sound. I think that'd would sound really incredible with his level of talent. Super badass with the effects though. And is 100% on coke...
I'd actually rather the rig rundowns had more playing to demonstrate the sounds... only half way through, but i'm digging it so far, RR is a ridiculous player!
Melobar is a registered trademark of the Smith Family...Asher's been cool about respecting the Melobar name, which we appreciate, so it's not a "Melobar", it's an Asher. Melobar V's of course can be played all the way up to the bridge...if you want to :) Love you're playing though Robert, keep showing the world what Steel can do!!
So many comments talking about Robert playing too much and being cocky.. John looks like he’s enjoying himself here and Robert sounds amazing on these instruments, I see no issue. I’m glad John let him do his thing
To all those that did the video, for the love of God put in the video what he's doing with his feet and knees! That's just as amazing as moving a slide around.
I was a fan of both of them. Now I'm a bigger JB fan. Also, this convinced me not to buy tickets to RR's Sweetwater show tonight. I can't support a guy who is rude to his tech and ungrateful for his success and endorsements. Very disappointing. Great work John!!
RR's comment about bluegrass was hilarious, he's apparently never been around any bluegrass players. It's usually medium or heavy gauge strings and picks that are so stiff they don't bend at all.
Really like RR but it's funny b/c the interviewer is over his head. Universal 12 tuning isn't some strange alien tuning (and there can be little variations) and leg-mounted controls for PSG is not new (quilter for example)
I LOVE AN ARTIST WITH A BIG EGO! They just don't make them like this anymore. Not interested in talking, just interested in their craft, the notes, and utilizing their amazing talent and propensity for the music and the music alone! Get it Robert Randolph, you just made a fan out of me!
That tuning on the pedal steel is angelic ...its got E9...C6 and some old southern make a deal with the devil type shit goin on...that guys got it...wow.
These guys make me sick his ego is fine he is one of the best musicians on earth who is black and doesn't do rap I am so glad to see this sick to death of rap being the only music the media pin on us
You can say that again! He was pretty clear in 2011 at least. Was surprised he didn't run back and 'get right' less than halfway through it! Brilliant player though.
Does anyone know who I could listen to that sounds like him around 715. And side note. Dude was just having fun and playing and I thought it was awesome everyone is too up tight. It sounds so awesome but I don't really like to listen to his songs. This was the bestrig rundown ever
This was nothing more than - I have no info to pass along, hear me play, listen to my cool BS and let me sell you something. Too bad for him. He didn't understand that Bohlinger could make him look good instead he chose to go with the giant ego, jive crap.
I thought I remembered seeing a RR before where he was chill. This must have just been one of those days he didn't feel like talking gear. I could see where too much of that would get old quick.
I feel the same.I started checking him out when I got my steel in 2015.He’s a LOT diff now….wouldn’t say for the better on the persons end,but can still play his ass off. I bet the sound guy is wearing RR’s slider smoothe out during a show.
I was excited to see this........ now I wish I didn't. Robert couldn't stop going .. "look at me play, look at my amp, look at me speak to myself in 3rd person." Goood job JB, but I'm not going to be listening to RR probably any longer.
John deserves a medal for this. Robert made this VERY difficult and John still managed to get it done. In his defense, Robert did seem to do a bit better by the end. Major kudos to John on this one.
Probably not in the mood, a little road fried, focused on other stuff, but he has to do it, cuz John flew out there...
JB was in way over his head with this crazy dude but did a sensational job of keeping him on track whist maintaining decorum. Sometimes the best part of rig rundown videos is watching JB ride these broncos!!
Hahahaha well put!
lol
Man, that stand up pedal steel must be the most vocal sounding I've ever heard. I'm sure a lot of it is his technique, but damn!
Of the instruments I can't play. Steel guitar is my favorite.
Yeah, me too!
I saw Robert play at a blues festival in Allen, TX a few years back. Let me tell you, he put his whole heart and soul into that performance and when he was done, the house was a-rockin.
robert randolph has the best sound. its like hearing muddy waters playing in a church band on sunday
Longest intro jam ever on PG, loved the R.R. though. Thanks PG.
This is by far the hardest rig rundown I've had to watch so far. If I wanted to listen to him play, that's what I would have searched for
Stressed me out so bad.Couldn’t wait for it to end.
i love how much he jammed on this. he rocks
Hey, remember back to the first Crossroads when he was humble and down-to-earth? =| His playing's only gotten better, tho, I'd say. Maybe he'll come back down to earth and bring his skills with him one of these days.
Get over it
It’s a tough world/ cut throat business
“He who is the most impertinent has the best chance” -Leopold Mozart
Goest forth and fucketh thy self
Actually agree with you, 2001-2003 were my favorite years to see him live.
The dude dropped his Peavey signature PowerSlide lap steel like a hot potato. It wasn't even out for a year.
This dude needs to attend the Derek trucks school of humility.
Why?
We already have a Trucks. Let’s have some variety. Some next things. Some less boring things
“He who is the most impertinent has the best chance” -Leopold Mozart
Needs some space on the pedal board for the Ego boost pedal, cos I think he's forgotten to turn it off.
You’d prefer a President you could have a beer with? A Maverick? A real Washington Outsider? “He who is the most impertinent has the best chance” -Leopold Mozart
Maybe an EHX Superego+ would do it? ;-) I'm sure he would smirk about it. - Besides, it's an amazing pedal which could broaden his sonic palette.
That was awesome. Mildly insane, but awesome :)
I could listen to this all day. Instrumental. Just the steel.
Hot damn! I love his playing!
His playing is truly unbelievable. I'm fully aware it sounds amazing as is, but I'd like to hear him play it with the "traditional" pedal steel sound. I think that'd would sound really incredible with his level of talent. Super badass with the effects though. And is 100% on coke...

So many comments talking about Robert playing too much and being cocky.. John looks like he’s enjoying himself here and Robert sounds amazing on these instruments, I see no issue. I’m glad John let him do his thing
Robert would much rather do most of his talking through the pedal steel
Yes. People hating on his “attitude” . F-off, you don’t know what’s going on over there. He’s a bad ass guitarist not a Washington Outsider
He really brings a lot of fresh ideas to this instrument.
To all those that did the video, for the love of God put in the video what he's doing with his feet and knees! That's just as amazing as moving a slide around.
i wonder why they don't do a rig rundown for RUclips commenters.
This dude is a bad ass. Never heard of him. Searching for all his vids now.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. I totally get what Robert's talking about. He's got some good stuff to say.
Why all the hate??
Losers. Let these guys party
“He who is the most impertinent has the best chance” -Leopold Mozart
"...when he's paying attention." 🔥
I was a fan of both of them. Now I'm a bigger JB fan. Also, this convinced me not to buy tickets to RR's Sweetwater show tonight. I can't support a guy who is rude to his tech and ungrateful for his success and endorsements. Very disappointing. Great work John!!
Great update ....!
RR's comment about bluegrass was hilarious, he's apparently never been around any bluegrass players. It's usually medium or heavy gauge strings and picks that are so stiff they don't bend at all.
too funny!!! poor Jon trying to get a word in...
Joe Greto he had the same problem with the Steve Lukather rig rundown lol
why do some people hate this guy? please tell me.
eventually he is good player. thanks.
his sacred attitude or sucky attitude or both!
He never showed the BOSS FT-2...that is his "secret weapon"...is yellow and it had with tape covering his name...
Everybody talking shit about this man's ego. I love it. He can back it up and then some. Y'all jealous.
Love to see Robert on the AXS-TV concerts. The look on the guitarist's faces when they try to trade 4's with Randolph... there were no survivors.
Coming soon, the Robert Randolph double hearing aid.
Really like RR but it's funny b/c the interviewer is over his head.
Universal 12 tuning isn't some strange alien tuning (and there can be little variations)
and leg-mounted controls for PSG is not new (quilter for example)
love me some Robert Randolph
Robert "All my equipment is signature" Randolph
That's incredible for a blind guy!!
wow...so vocal n expressive
Robert is unreal!!!
All the people telling him to stop playing in the comments... God damn I was digging it.
good one, that is what like, show me what you can get, out of what you have, that man is a character!
Great interview, very engaging...unlike some other PG interviews he demonstrated his gear, great player
When will there be an in flames rig rundown?
He does some sweet piano-like comping on that thing!
And some sweet vocal like singing stuff! lol
Please do Nickelback again this year!!!!
You have to take a shot every time Robert says his own name, and a beer chaser when he says a variation on the word pay.
These guys make me sick his ego is fine he is one of the best musicians on earth who is black and doesn't do rap I am so glad to see this sick to death of rap being the only music the media pin on us
@@TheEricroberson You are overstating his talent.
Boss FT-2 Dynamic Filter
the real mystery is in the comments.
Dude's like stop talking, I wanna play.
This is gonna be a rare one if it get taken down I'm gonna download it to save .. Either RR has a Coke habit or had way too many espressos.
Hey the blues is so cool.. you play it like the blues master of it . it's terrifficckk. great playing it murff
He's like the Hendrix of pedal steel. I could listen to this all day.....
Greatest intro ever.
Kinda sad. Hope he hasn't ruined himself, because he's an insane talent.
Wow. Such a difference from the 2011 Rig Rundown. Lay off the coke RR.

"Not a lot of restraint"
Hahaha
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Man, I think it's time someone took the next step re: pedal steel design. Maybe it's time to use technology that was invented in the last century.
Jesus. This guy. Hahaha! What a whirlwind.
This guy can keep on sniffing as much coke as he wants, as long as he keeps on making that lap steel sing as he did at 7:13.
it's actually a stand-up PSG (note the pushrods)
I didn't pay for it, so I didn't care *snorts fat rail*
I saw that. “Everybody gotta wear your sunglasses around here. So you can feel 😎 cool
what language was that pedal steel speaking?
I bet JB had a stiff drunk after this one. That guy was a handful!
The only thing greater than his playing is his ego..
If Robert Randolph has a serious eye condition then he has my deepest sympathy. Other than that take the shades off when someone is talking to you man
did they NOT MIC him for this?? Getting the diva vibe from this cat.
Hi Robert
13:33 sums up this interview
Yep, RR takes himself way too serious. Great player but seems like every video I see him in his ego is out of control.
Ron Singley when you play pedal steel like that I think it's ok to have a big ego
Contrast this guys arrogance with a true genius player like Paul Franklin who's as humble as they come. smh
Robert Randolph likes saying Robert Randolph, but he can play.
Go ahead, Robert, tell 'em what a basketball jones is....
Dear god!
Cocky!
I do see an ego here. I see a guy who loves what he does.
feels like he is over compensating
Coke is one hell of a drug!!!
That Dude lol it's true
This was nothing more than - I have no info to pass along, hear me play, listen to my cool BS and let me sell you something. Too bad for him. He didn't understand that Bohlinger could make him look good instead he chose to go with the giant ego, jive crap.
So many haters hating... YO, HE'S A PLAYER... Comment on his playing, he's not on fucking late night...
I don't think Robert could get bad tone if he tried.
lol. he may be the most overplaying interview they have ever done.
I love RRR but DAAAAAMMMMNNNN MAN
Shhhh. Just stop playing for a couple of seconds and be interviewed.
Samantha Birthdays okay
You need to lay off the drugs for a while.
wish i hadn't seen this. i love the dude's playing. i guess in all fairness, everyone is a dick sometimes. is he like this 24/7
In the earlier rig rundown he came off as really humble and down to earth.
These comments......get a sense of humor people.
I was excited to see this........ now I wish I didn't. Robert couldn't stop going .. "look at me play, look at my amp, look at me speak to myself in 3rd person." Goood job JB, but I'm not going to be listening to RR probably any longer.
You're going to stop listening to him because of this interview? Why?
Sometimes it's just too hard to separate the character from the music.
I wouldn't listen to half the people in my record collection if I judged them on their 'extracurricular' activity.
Im not going to read any more of your posts because of your reaction to Robert Randolphs interview. ::snort::
Rue Buell stop your crying you little baby. You wish you had that kind of flavor but you don't so you cry.
Great original steel sounds.... a smidge too much selling gear... but an amazing player....
It would be nice if he NOT play and talk when being interviewed.
This is real blues none of that fake shit.
Outstanding player but this guy is too cool for school...
I wouldn’t buy shit with his name on it after watching this. BTW, his same five licks got tiring fast.
That was a disappointment.
Ray Charles vibe haha
