I really enjoy your shoot-from-the-hip videos like this. They're pleasant to listen to. Your earnestness and sincerity really comes through and it stands out from all the intense anger out there sometimes when it comes to game reviewers.
The first chapter of the game really had me feeling anxious. Just how quickly things went to shit and the sheer abysmal nature of the environment. I found myself well immersed and it's a shame most of these critics have such a high adrenaline/dopamine tolerance.
@@redcenturion88 it has nothing to do with adrenaline tolerance, just different things get peoples adrenaline going. And jump scares dont make my adrenaline going, it just makes me annoyed.
Aside from Gameranx and a couple others, I do my best to avoid reviews until I’ve experienced a game myself. I say this because there’s been times where I’ve avoided a game because the reviews were poor, only to pick it up on a sale down the road and enjoy the hell out of it. That’s why the “Before you buy” videos are so great. It’s never really one sided and they give you legit feedback without overpraising or bashing.
@UCRme1CX4dh38mKNwiId3b6A Its not that serious bud. I wasn’t speaking for others I was speaking for myself and I don’t really care what people can or can’t afford either. I try to keep the pre purchase reviews light but I mainly look to see how a games running performance wise before hand. The main point I was making was that reviews can prevent people from buying a game they might have enjoyed. Different strokes for different folks. Just look at you, you’re saying it’s not worth $70 and you haven’t even played it yet. Want me to tell you what to eat for dinner tonight too?
I pay more attention to stream reviews. Where real players are rating a game based on their gameplay. Gotham knights got terrible reviews but task players enjoyed it bad on steam reviews and I bought it and really enjoy it. It's like movie reviews, movie critics don't know my tastes
The problem with that is how much games can change from launch to the final update. A lot of the problems reviewers talk about at launch may have been fixed with a patch.
I just finished the game and really liked it. All the actors performances were very good. Gameplay, although simple, was very good and satisfying to hit things.
Did you not die at all? Did you not manual save, backtrack to get something, then glitch thru the floors?? I sure did. Its happened to me 3 times already, sent me back 20 minutes each time! I CANT EVEN TRUST THE GAME TO SAVE, WTFFF.
@@DelinquentDemon I did die a lot and did notice the save, I ended up just forgetting about the save system and just going with the autosave sadly I also used it to go back when i miss one of the side paths
@@DelinquentDemon Wow that sucks. I never glitches thu the floor but at times the combat would not register my hit. It normally happened when the enemies where vaulting over something. Also did not notice any issues with the saves
I pre-ordered Callisto game but I haven't started playing it yet, I have to finish GOW ragnarök first, Bro I'm only interested in the length of the game? Glen Schofield said that the game be about12-14h, it seems that he lied to us, I saw on YT channels that some finished the game in about 6-7.5h, how many hours did you finish it?
8/10 for me🤝 Enjoyed my time with it. Not saying its the greatest horror game ever played because its not, but its a solid entry. Story was good not mind blowing but with the ending and season pass coming with content, it's a great foundation going forward. I was a fan of the combat elements unlike most especially when you get the hang of it. The mellee and dogge was refreshing. Not just your typical aim and shoot scenario over and over. Graphically and audio was its 1 of the best I've ever played. Settings and sound were amazing. The enemy proper reminded me of what the flood from would be like on roids. I recommend playing late, blacked out room and the audio up to MAX. The tension at times was up there. Thought the runtime was fine. I done probably 12-14 hours. I loved the fact bosses were tough and ruthless. Bosses are supposed to be hard. Things I think do need to improve was like, the main 1 for me was the lack of puzzle aspects to it, like dead space instead of the normal go here get a fuse etc. The selection of enemies could of had loads more designs I think instead of the handful they had. Maybe some other mellee weapons to go with arsenal instead of the 1. 2 things I hated were 1.swapping weapons/guns. Proper clunky and annoying at times but I think it was purposely like that to take its time but it became tedious And 2. The saving system was pants. Some parts that were hard you have to go back maybe good 2-5mins sometimes Hope they do more with. Shame it's had alot of hate. I had a blast on PS5. Looking forward to seeing more of the world they've built.
The combat really needed a real dodge with i frames and a parry with how melee focused it is. With how it is now its basically a turn based battle system until something shoots you from off screen with no way to see it coming or avoid. The combat system really felt like a pre-alpha concept
@@ashleyyoung2597 never said dodge roll. Learn to not misquote people. This game already has a dodge im just saying to make it so you can do it on command without that contextual bullshit so you can dodge off screen projectiles reliably.
@@deeznutscragmiar6968 he didn't say dodge roll; the dodge step is serviceable much of the time but in combat with 4+ enemies, it isn't suitable for purpose in clusters nor do you have a suitable way to break combat and adjust position. The run mechanic backwards is barely noticeable.
I picked it up too. Played it for 2hrs and really enjoying it. Games looks awesome too. Yes it’s not 10/10 but it’s def an enjoyable 7/10 if you’re into this genre.
I'm loving the game at the moment, on PS5, the combo with combat is different and cool, atmosphere is great. Was definitely hoping there was more with the story and finding logs but I really like it. Also the prequel podcast thing was great with a great cast.
@@JakeBaldino It's definitely one I feel if you take your time and really think of it as it's own and not dead space 4 it can be better than what people are saying. Also I agree, wish Sam was in it way more, or if he was the main actor.
I agree with you. I love the game, too, especially it gives me back 'Dead Space' vibe like before. Glen said they will have more content for TCP so I'm really looking for it.
It's definitely not as bad as everyone is saying except pc they can bash it for the performance issues to me it's 7/10 max. so far I'm not finished with it yet and I think it's a good foundation with potential to be made alot better through patches and future installments. just like the order 1886 which also wasn't as bad as everyone said not good not bad slightly more positives than negatives
The key to the melee is not getting over excited to attack after you dodge. You can just wait to make sure an enemy combo is truly over before attacking and you will own the enemy.
I really enjoy the game in a lot of aspects. The combat is the only part I had issues with really but I didn’t dislike it. It isn’t really that scary but it’s tense, creepy, and it’s a fun adventure. I can see the reasons people don’t like it, PC stuttering the most, but I think people being a little harsh on it.
Nah FUCK these devs lmao...not a single excuse for this absolutely dogshit PC port...I can run 2077/Dying Light 2 maxed RT at WAY higher FPS than the Cashitto Protocum
nah I don't think people are being harsh at all. Most give it a 7/10. It's just that they were expecting a 9, understandably so. For me, as a OG Deadspace fan, i welcome this fresh take on the genre.
"PC stuttering the most, but I think people being a little harsh on it." Are you a journalist ? No... So you paid your game with your money. How can you accept (Now more than 10 years....) that studios launch UNFINISHED games ?? I'm sorry, old schmuck here. I was born with the good cartridge generation. We still had bugs but nothing major. In the 21th century : it's absolutely NORMAL... wait few months... Unacceptable !!
I just finished the part where you go back to your ship with Dani and I’m loving it. Like you said, it’s an old school style video game. Linear as hell and that’s what I’ve been wanting. Kind of tired of all these 40-60 hour long games.
I'm hoping it at least gets enough success for a sequel. I feel like they have a winning formula, they just need to listen to the feedback and improve upon it, and if they do, I really think the franchise and studio can become an industry darling.
I feel the exact same way. I had it on PS5, it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it wasn't horrible. The graphics were definitely beyond anything I've seen in modern gaming.
I honestly love the atmosphere and vibe the whole game gives off it's perfect. It's honestly what I wanted out of this game. The action for whatever genre this is, is peak. It's difficult but when you get it you get it.
Non AAA studios first game-- I hope it ends up doing well, striking distance can do something great with this IP… the atmosphere and graphics really are incredible. Little things like Jacob’s walking animations where he’s looking behind him or just wiping sweat off his face sell the immersion. Really is like playing through a movie which is what I was hoping for. Not disappointed with the purchase but I do think you had a valid critique . Ps. Idk how they did the face animations when the characters are talking but damn did they do a good job, no uncanny valley or anything
I've just gotten to the "Lost" chapter on Series X and I'm really enjoying my time with the game, unfortunate that PC is unplayable, and yeah it may not be a 10/10 but I'm definitely having a good time playing it. Also I understand your sentiment around some games just being like a good movie, not every game has to be replayable, just a good experience from start to end.
As a PC player it's definitely not unplayable. It has problems but some people are really overstating them. The only issue I have is the shader stutter and it's not even that bad on my system. I chose to model my settings after the settings found on console and it's been fine. Slightly higher settings than the "Quality" setting found on Series X and I'm able to keep a locked 30fps on my 4k TV. I can do 60fps without RT and higher if I play on my monitors. Performance can be a bit iffy in some areas but it's been mostly fine.
pc isn't unplayable anymore, that patch yesterday did genuinely fix 99% of the stuttering, I didn't play it past the opening launch night because of stutters, I put 4 hours in tonight because it's running much better
A year later It is the best looking game I've ever seen and I can't believe how optimized it is. I have a 6700 XT equivalent card and it's running at 100+ fps @1440p on high settings. It looks better than any game I've ever seen and it has about double the FPS of any comparable game. It kills me that the greedy execs ruined this game because they were too impatient. I think if this game launched in its current state it would have been a success. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but it's a solid 8 out of 10
I bought it and I personally loved it a lot. 100% agree that the story was like oh alright. But I was blown away by the in-game environment. Especially the sound and the detail were awesome.
@@kingrobotnik6950 For me I only played little over an hour. So I, myself can't judge it from that play time.. I will say this, I was hyped to play it, popped it in, but wasn't as hype for it as I was ready to play gow lol.. So as of now I'm just finishing up little left on GOW and it's platinum
@@kingrobotnik6950 It's probably not worth it for most people if you are looking for replayability. The end boss felt like the gym bro version of Mr.X tho.
Just beat it today. Loved the original controls and the fresh change of pace from the over saturation of the samey type games we’ve been getting lately.
I feel like they should've gone with a dodge more like TLOU2. The dodging in that game is similar but you actually have to time it and there's a designated dodge button. I feel like that would've gone a long way with making the melee combat feel better. The dodge in TLOU2 also held up well against groups of enemies, where as in The Callisto Protocol, it really only works w 1v1 encounters.
I kind of feel like they maybe started with that intent but couldn't tackle it technically that blends the animations of multiple people in different positions, so they tried to come up with a simpler solution that locks you into this 1 on 1 pre animated dance with a single enemy. Doesn't work nearly as good unfortunately.
I agree. TLOU2 really set the standard for how future survival horror games should play. The Callisto protocol came up with their take on melee combat and maybe they stumbled due to the difficulty of implementing it in the same way. While it's not perfect I still enjoy the game immensely.
Visual and audio designs are stunning. 1.006.000 patch dropped last to address stuttering. I don’t in the slightest regret a purchase. Games of this length I start a new game almost immediately if I like it that much, like Wolfenstein: The New Order and Max Payne. After some tweaks and fixes, it’s gonna retain cult status down-the-road. There’s plenty of games in the horror genre that became sought-after favorites for their style, despite their jank; Siren, Obscure, Deadly Premonition, Kuon, The Suffering, Alone in the Dark, etc. Check-out the Helix Station podcast (prequel series to Callisto), costarring Michael Ironside. It’s dope. I got more on what’s happening with Callisto before I started playing it. I still see a lot of potential here.
Bro I feel you 💯 I'm a big fan of the genre, it's proving to be ahead of its time, in spite of being 10+ years old (with Dead Space). I've played just about 2 hours and I really appreciate it. Bought the digital deluxe version because I also believe it will reach cult status in time. I keep pondering if this is actually better than Dead Space. I wish they *didn't* hire Josh Duhamel to do the job so they could have gone more creative on character development.
My two biggest things for games are story and gameplay and it sounds like this one doesn't really check either box, definitely a bummer but maybe it will end up on Gamepass or PS Plus later on for me to try out. Nothing wrong with a 6-7/10 game but I can't justify spending $101.68 CAD on one. Always appreciate your insight Jake
Yeah, the $101CAD is the dagger for me. I had it preordered, but I’m returning it still plastic wrapped to EB and putting a $0 preorder down on Dead Space. I’ll buy Callisto on sale.
I really get a lot out of your videos. This is a game I was really looking forward to playing. With “God of War, Ragnarok” & Modern Warfare released, I wasn’t sure if I should wait or play right away. It’s really unfortunate being criticized by close minded individuals. Your videos are greatly appreciated.
I don't think it's fair calling people who criticize this game "close minded". The game is a 5-7, and in PC its technical state is a mess. If you don't mind spending 70 bucks on that, that's great, but other people have all the right in the world to give their (valid) criticism.
Haven't finished it yet but Sam Witwer is great and the airlock sequence at the end of Chapter 4 has me excited to see what happens to his character. I love how Cpt Ferris' bio card has his place of birth as Rimohtad :)
I feel like if you had expectations going into the game, they might have been let down, especially with the horror side of things. I was hoping for more horror than I generally got, outside of cheap jumpscares. They did a much better job with it in the earlier games with the tension they were constantly building.
The problem is the gameplay really. One Vs one you're basically invincible, more than that and it's just frustrating because if an enemy gets out of your line of sight you just get smacked from behind with no way to defend yourself or you'll be dealing with one and the spitter thing will spit at you and you can't dodge or block that at the same time. Also for what people were hoping for it takes a lot of the tension out of the game, you literally have to get in close and have a brawl. Being afraid of enemies getting in close and trying to keep your distance is what made dead space scary (along with atmosphere etc) Oh, and no lock on button or quick turn in a game heavily reliant on hand to hand combat and dodging? Insanity
Love your reviews and viewpoint. I enjoy learning about new (and old) video games, even for games I’m not gonna pick up. I play games for immersion and fun, and this is one of the few places I go to get a feel for game play, characters, worlds and fun factor. Thanks, Jake!
You are like me Baldino, sometimes atmosphere is enough to get me through the game.Linear adventure with good graphics and passable combat is enough to buy this on sale some day.
Sounds like a game that will be great to pick up down the road at half price when all the kinks are taken out. It's also a shame because I think a sequel could probably fix a lot wrong with the game. But who knows if it will get that chance with how expensive games are to make which is a shame. Same feeling I got from 1886...
This proves the thoery that if a game dev doesnt lift the review barg until 24 hours before the release of the game it means even they know it isnt a good game.
A really nice vibe to this review. It’s refreshing to hear takes which don’t involve completely shitting on a *non-AAA* studio for creating a fun game that doesn’t necessarily get absolutely everything right on the first pass.
The Non AAA excuses the performance for me, it doesn’t excuse the overhyped marketing for a game that it was nothing close to being. Misrepresenting a game like AAA companies do gets you some major scrutiny
@@5000Seabass a lot of that hype came from commentators claiming it was basically Dead Space 4, and people bought that comparison. The studio just made the game, everyone else hyped it because Glen was part of the team. Dead Space was a great game because of the WHOLE development team, not just Glen Schofield.
@@LionMob If we’re being pedants then reread your comment, sparky - does AAAA = AAA?? For the purpose of this argument, I’m referring to the experience of the team *as a team*. A AAA/AAAA budget doesn’t assure a good game from a new studio. AAA by budget standards? Sure. Cohesive experience as a full-fledged studio with a proven record? Not even close.
What? This game has a season pass with content that isn’t made yet, costs 70 bucks, and locks a difficulty behind a paywall. How is this a PS2 era game?
I’ve almost platinumed it, it starts off amazingly, then drops slowly becoming above average. It was still good, I would give it a 7.50/10 My main issues are: - Inconsistent collisions, sometimes I bump into nothing on the floor and it fills me. - Dash is inconsistent, sometimes in battles no matter how hard I try, it won’t let me run. - Story was decent but underwhelming despite the opportunities it his in premise to open. - Dodge system is awkward, I feel tacking it onto a button as well as a direction fixes this, as it makes it really hard to change corse int terms of direction and dodging choice. Good things: - Sound and music are amazing, constantly worried about what was ahead, as the design was indicative and 3D audio correct in terms for your direction. - Upgrades were really rewarding if you were clever about your choices based on the enemy type you were encountering. - Visually stunning in both in performance and graphical, again my tv interprets mid-frames but I think it was great. Though I can see this being bad depends on device use-age. Overall happy, but not as good as I thought as expecting
@@JakeBaldino Yeah exactly that! It happened more with the two headed mutation then it did with the rest, I even looked into accessibility to see if I could toggle instead of hold for it, as I blame myself before the system, but looks like there’s not a choice
critic/reviewer culture has made it so average and just “good” games struggle to exist. Feels like the response to this game furthers the idea that every game needs to be groundbreaking.
Absolutely amazing game. Played back-to-back with Dead Space, and liked Callisto even better. Great atmosphere, slow but engaging pace, simple but challenging mechanics - this is my type of a game. And graphics and sounds done on outstanding level. 10/10 to me.
Just wait until the end and the honeymoon phase wears off. The more I look back on it the more ripped off I feel. They better make the story dlc free after this.
@@Panos_GRE For me as soon as I finished the game. The final boss, weak story, and abrupt ending really put me off. I just kinda sat there like “that’s it?”. The more you actually think about the game the more problems you notice. It should be $30 at most. Unfortunately I spent $75. The story is just so so bad. Prior to launch I listened to the podcast and everything. For me the hype was real but the end product kinda sucks imo I should have learned my lesson after Cyberpunk lol never preorder games.
Realizing that you're one of those channels that I always click when I get a notification. A good testament to your take on these games and just feeling like a friend you can get nerdy with. Appreciate your perspective on this one, I was looking forward to it but will probably end up just waiting for the Dead Space remake
This is pretty much the most bang on review/discussion on this game out there right now. The super negative stuff kinda baffles me (unless you were trying to play on PC, good god the port at launch is terrible) but otherwise it's an enjoyable 7/10 experience for sure. It is a hard game at times but I only ever found myself retrying a handful of times before getting through a tough spot so it didn't become frustrating. I think people's expectations were just very very high and feeling a bit letdown they were probably more judgemental than they'd normally be. It's a really fun experience if you give it a chance and hopefully the next game (not being made during a pandemic) can expand things and put some newer ideas into the mix.
The most gorgeous looking 7/10 game I've played since The Order 1886 lol. The combat was too simple and the levels were too linear and there wasn't enough enemy variety and it wasn't very scary but somehow I really liked it 😆
I think, apart from the bad PC launch and the lack of a NEW GAME + or other fun game modes (currently since they'll be arriving by February from what I know), the main problem was the marketing and how much it seemed to be a spiritual successor to Dead Space. I, myself, stuck with the trailers and how a lot of focus was placed on the melee combat mixed in with properly using ranged weapons and the push-pull powers. So, from the get-go, I was expecting more of an intense, action-horror game rather than a full-blown survival horror game. The marketing and the public perception seems to have expected a return-to-form, traditional survival horror title, which this is not. So, yeah. I'd personally still recommend it since I'm a huge fan of short, sweet games that don't end up being bloated like most modern, triple-A open world shenanigans. But that's just me and my two cents. I know some of y'all might get mad at me for liking the game, but that's life. I just happen to have a preference for these kinds of games. And, no, please don't argue that I'm just not a fan of scary horror games. I'm a big fan of The Evil Within 1 and 2 along with the original Dead Space trilogy (1 and 2 in particular).
Would not exactly call The Evil Within 1 or even 2 "scarry horror" since they are more like third person shooters with minimum suspenseful moments even Dead Space 2 feels more like an action horror type to me
@@bamban_garcia5562 , fair enough. But I do recall the first The Evil Within game getting panned so hard cuz of how difficult it was and how rare resources were along with complaints that the boss fights (especially Laura) were too scary. I personally pushed through and would agree that it's not as scary as other slower survival horror games. I do like horror games that allow me to fight back somehow. Hahahah. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate it!
I can’t wait to see how they continue the game in a part two, I think it’d be a good chance for them to fix the things they messed up in this first game as well as I think it’d be a chance to really make us feel hopeless if we are Jacob trying to get off Callisto ACTUALLY ALONE knowing you really are helpless and maybe through the middle of the game u get brought to the main planet or something
I think if it wasn't priced so high, it would have been received better. It feels more like a 50 or 40 dollar game. That is probably a big part of the reason, and of course, all the PC issues.
I honestly do not understand the hate for this game? Like people are saying “it’s just mimicking dead space” as an excuse to hate the game. But those same people are the main ones buying call of duty, and any sport games every single year. I’m having such a good time with this game. Horror games are typically short. Resident evil games are made to be beaten faster every single play through. I LOVE the combat in Callisto. Don’t know what people are honestly expecting from this game lmao
Hey, I don’t know if you read these comments a day late, but I really admire your commitment to being a positive voice in the gaming space. Even when things are less than perfect, or even when they’re downright bad, you bring so much positivity to the table, and I think we all need more of that. Keep up the good work, I’ll take you up on that pizza! :)
I think this is one of those games where there's just going to be a divide between most professional critics and players, similar to something like Days Gone (which is kind of funny because Sam Witwer is in both of them).
@@basketballbeast755well for all the PC players I totally understand their complaints. I enjoyed the game a lot and I’m bummed PC players had so many issues
"A classic old video game" EXACTLY THIS! I've had several discussions with my friends talking about how this game is getting DESTROYED in reviews. Nothing wrong with a simple entertaining linear game. Appreciate the review man 🙏
I just got it free on playstation store. Totally worth it. I was really excited and then heard all the hate. I can see where people are coming from but I can't stop playing it also.
Just finished it without watching a single review, and i must say that they delivered on everything they promised. Everyone seems to forget that the first dead space was also only 12 hours long but i wouldn't have minded if the game was a bit longer. That aside well done for striking distance's first game and NG+ is coming in februari too along with new free stuff. (played on ps5 / finished on normal security and had a blast preformance wise)
Appreciate the balanced perspective, Jake! Not every big release can be a 10/10 but with the marketing push being Callisto I can also understand the disappointment. And a "mere 7/10" can be hard to swallow with the price of new games these day.
I get how a lot of reviewers had a rough time with it because of the technical issues but now the patch is out and those issues are now very minimal, I think it deserves a second chance, it's no surprise people had a hard time getting immersed with the constant frustration of stuttering ruining the experience and that frustration then bleeding into the overall view on the game. It looks amazing, sounds amazing, combat is different, has it's own learning curve; it's strategic, challenging and punishing but largely a blast, here and there enemies have gotten some cheap shots on me due to how the melee camera works but for the most part, it works entirely as intended. All the performances from the cast so far have been top notch, love seeing Sam Witwer in a villainous role and I love Elias, was not expecting to encounter a guy so English he constantly says "bruv", makes me feel right at home 🤣 While horror and what's scary is very subjective, I don't know where people were getting off saying it's not scary or at the least very eerie, it has tonnes of tension and atmosphere, owing in large part to the art and sound design, in much the same way the original Dead Space had, it didn't scare me to death but it had me decently on edge and very much planted in the world it was trying to sell me on, Callisto does too. I'm so glad I waited a day for the PC patch because I'm having a great time with it.
I think the developers, or maybe it was marketing, definitely shot the game in the foot by constantly attaching "From the people who brought you Dead Space." The first Dead Space is still so special and inviting that comparison was just gonna hurt it.
Why though? The 2005 King Kong movie was made by Peter Jackson, should we have expected it to be like Lord of The Rings The Return of The King? Callisto Protocol is very similar to Dead Space, it's a horror game in space made by the same creator and if that wasn't known to the public we would be here talking about how the game takes inspiration from Dead Space to the point of almost being a rip off.
Kind of the interviewer's fault though. It's one thing to say "from the creators of" but it's another thing to have interviews with people constantly and never endingly bringing up Dead Space and Dead Space. They indirectly warped public opinion and probably didn't really give the developers a chance to help distinguish and inform public opinion of the game.
I feel like this game is getting the same treatment the first Evil Within got when it came out where everyone was hating on it but then when the second game came out people looked back on it pretty fondly.
I still wanna play this, even with the disappointment; it's kind of the type of thing I need to experience myself as well. I am planning to wait until we learn more about its future though and to see if they plan to make any changes to the game. Being in Canada though, this is not a $90 game.....
Dude plz keep doing what you're doing i feel like you are the most reliable game reviewer out there and i think it helps that i feel like we are kinda similar in game enjoyment. 👍👍👍
I think a lot of this depends on people’s expectations. Anyone who hyped this to the moon is going to be disappointed. but if you keep your expectations in check (as I did) you’ll find it’s actually a very enjoyable game. Also I think if more people managed their expectations they’d find they would enjoy more video games more often. Great video man!
Yep. I let it happen to me 3 times this year. And all 3 times I was absolutely certain it would be a near perfect game. BF 2042, Midnight Suns, & Callisto. I think 3rd times a charm and I've learned my lesson. Lol.
God damn, things are rough out there for some if $10 breaks the bank. But hey at least you’re willing to give it a shot when it comes down to meet your budget. Keep an open mind about it, if you have a decent screen and sound setup you will be amazed as to how immersive it really is. Despite its short comings.
@@DaPeasant Yeah it's called a popping out kids then complaining you don't have any money problem. Peeps need to start wrapping it up and reevaluate their life choices.
I dunno if I'm just really into sci-fi horror, or the visuals, or what...but I REALLY like it. So much so I was actually kinda shocked by how much it's getting dunked on.
Same man. People just have bad takes. It's popular to hate a game more than its popular to like one. Granted the only issue I have is those stupid long head things. Also it's not super scary but I get why since you constantly are up close in the enemies face so it loses the fear factor.
Same here man. I think I’m on chapter 4 or 5 and I’m loving this game. I don’t understand the hate. I can understand why people don’t like the combat I guess, but it’s not bad and I love it. The hard hitting stun button and shooting punchy feeling weapons are great. Idk I don’t get why people jump on the hate bandwagon because they see someone else dislike it. Hope the dlc is a good length and hope we get a sequel in a few years.
Ok fellas. I just beat the final boss and I've gotta say, I see why everyone is complaining. Like 80% of the game was fun af, but those minibosses and the final boss are AWFUL. Very very poorly designed. I can't believe they actually put that in the game. My other two complaints are the stick dodges and Jacob moves like a slug. During combat he should move twice as fast. But like I said, I loved the first 80%.
it’s very linear and doesn’t really have survival elements or puzzles. they kept hammering “creator of Dead Space” into the marketing, but it is not really like Dead Space except for sci-fi horror theme. even the dismemberment is very different and not like what people wanted or expected
@@nunab1864 I’m not trying to say it is negative, it just isn’t what Dead Space was. I love linear games, and there is a TON of room between this linear and open world. the marketing of this did not make that clear AT ALL because it looks so similar to Dead Space and even name drops the game in multiple trailers. the most popular survival horror games have more exploration and are known for having maps to search for items in, so it is surprising this game has no map at all. likely not what people were looking for here. if they didn’t want people to expect this to be a spiritual successor to Dead Space, they failed pretty bad in the marketing
@@nunab1864 I agree! I just think this one suffered greatly from being shoved into the spiritual successor category of games incorrectly, or doubling down on the wrong aspects for certain people. If they had immediately pushed it as a linear narrative space horror experience, more would’ve been more down for it probably, idk. exploration is just seen as a key aspect of survival horror, making this more action than survival
Sucks that it’s getting review bomb but I can definitely say it’s one of my favorite games. Yeah there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement but hopefully the creative team and devs take the feedback they get from this launch and improve on it whether it’s with a sequel or dlc story content in the near future
My biggest pet peeve with the game right now is the fact that so many hallway sections, squeeze thru here, get in that vent, sneak over there. I am enjoying the game but most of the time is spent in these situations. Some areas do buildup a lot of tension but there isn't that fear factor like in Dead Space for example. I did expect a lot more from Glen Schofield
What you mean like Isaac in Dead Space? Leave the tram, power something up whilst shooting some limbs off some necromorphs, return to tram to get to the next level. Rinse, and repeat.
@@Discombobulate453 No the same, atmosphere building was way more intense in DS, and also the feeling of dread entering any room. DS had it's flaw but its immersion wasn't often ruined like with this game. Which i do like don't get me wrong but every 2 mins you are squeezing thru a wall or a vent.
Jake Baldino you know what I'm going start supporting you. You got that old school soul in you. What I mean about this. Back in the 90's we would just play the game and have fun. Now with this generation (Most of the RUclipsrs) they just don't enjoy the games anymore. There to busy( Looking for)!!! frame rates, pixels, hertz, nits I could keep going. We old school catz we just want good game play sound, and graphics. Everything else would be bonus points.
I actually like the linearity! No question marks hunting or circling back to old places to get treasures. Just cut stuff up. This game and Evil West are both great.
It popped up on my Steam this morning - sounds like a premise I'd like. As a PC player, I'll have to wait until it's "un-borked" and on sale. Thanks for the review.
I’ll be honest, I have my strong doubts of this game being overhated considering I haven’t seen enough gameplay versus games like Pokemon Scarlet Violet that was bashed for being extremely unfinished and there was enough gameplays shown to unveil the results, but yet, this game continues to sell well. Anyway, for Callisto, I’ll say the gameplay and extreme hardcore level of carnage to the enemies, NPC’s, and Jacob is definitely right up my alley of blood and gore obsession in gaming. As a result of playing that game first time, my wish was definitely granted. But before I say it is perfect, I’ll state its flaws. For combat, I wish the mechanics were built for multiple enemies instead of one. For example, make dodge be an action by will instead of incoming enemy attacks, especially when you’re limited with the GRP battery and gun ammo. As for story, honestly, it’s average, but what’s questionable was Jacob all of a sudden trying engage teamwork with Dani rather than take revenge for her actions into letting him crash into the Black Iron prison and letting his ship infect and contaminate the whole prison facility. It’s one action that’s far from being forgiven, but oh well, guess Jacob has a “change of heart”. Also, the save system in this game is terribly assembled considering auto save and manual save barely make any difference since they both don’t carry out your progression with upgrades, item purchases, and item scavenging. Same can be said in trying to save in a specific area where you want to stop at. As for price, I can tell you 70 bucks is WAY too much since there’s barely any new content except just restarting New Game. Maybe something like Survival/Horde mode would’ve added replay value. But overall, this game is alright, tho, I recommend waiting for the price to drop before getting it.
To be honest as soon as I saw real actors a "draw" I was worried. Seeing the combat play out makes me sad. I better be able to shoot almost anything. I hope the people I watched just suck.
I just beat the game last night and I found myself really enjoying the game but I didn't love it. The combat is great but this game really could've benefitted from a quick turn mechanic like God of war. If you're fighting an enemy and another pops up behind you, even with sensitivity turned up 100% you just can't turn around quick enough. That and the story felt quite familiar to that of say, dead space, I was able to piece together the whole story and that "big" reveal towards then end only a few hours in. Very predictable story and game, but it helped scratch the itch until the dead space remake comes out so it's a solid 7/10. Great content as always Jake! Keep being objective and honest, it's the best kind of review!
I really enjoy your shoot-from-the-hip videos like this. They're pleasant to listen to. Your earnestness and sincerity really comes through and it stands out from all the intense anger out there sometimes when it comes to game reviewers.

I absolutely agree with you. I enjoy the game despite its shortcomings. It totally scratches my scifi horror itch. I have a lot of fun with it.
I envy you, I wish all it took to scare me was jump scares
The first chapter of the game really had me feeling anxious. Just how quickly things went to shit and the sheer abysmal nature of the environment. I found myself well immersed and it's a shame most of these critics have such a high adrenaline/dopamine tolerance.
@@redcenturion88 it has nothing to do with adrenaline tolerance, just different things get peoples adrenaline going.
And jump scares dont make my adrenaline going, it just makes me annoyed.
@@randomenvelope Truly weren't many jump scares lol, on my 2nd playthrough... Maybe less than 5 true jump scares and they're spread out well.
@@GrownManPat thats objectively not true, all the scares are jump scares, theres ones that happen during gameplay and cutscenes.

Me too 😂 the combat an dodging was fun. Can't wait to play the dlc.
8/10 for me🤝
Enjoyed my time with it.
2 things I hated were
1.swapping weapons/guns. Proper clunky and annoying at times but I think it was purposely like that to take its time but it became tedious
And
2. The saving system was pants. Some parts that were hard you have to go back maybe good 2-5mins sometimes
Hope they do more with.
Pretty much it just doesn't feel fully fleshed out
Dodge roll in those tight hallways. Nah I'm good not every game needs a roll. Come on.
I for one hate Dodge rolls would rather have a Dodge step
@@ashleyyoung2597 never said dodge roll. Learn to not misquote people. This game already has a dodge im just saying to make it so you can do it on command without that contextual bullshit so you can dodge off screen projectiles reliably.
@@deeznutscragmiar6968 he didn't say dodge roll; the dodge step is serviceable much of the time but in combat with 4+ enemies, it isn't suitable for purpose in clusters nor do you have a suitable way to break combat and adjust position. The run mechanic backwards is barely noticeable.

@@dnzrdm Theres levels to this shit for sure Naughty Dog are Top Tier.
I thought I was the only person to by Obscure. . .!
I’m playing it right now and I’m really liking it so far
My two biggest things for games are story and gameplay and it sounds like this one doesn't really check either box, definitely a bummer but maybe it will end up on Gamepass or PS Plus later on for me to try out. Nothing wrong with a 6-7/10 game but I can't justify spending $101.68 CAD on one. Always appreciate your insight Jake
Yeah, the $101CAD is the dagger for me. I had it preordered, but I’m returning it still plastic wrapped to EB and putting a $0 preorder down on Dead Space. I’ll buy Callisto on sale.
Your wish has been granted, now on gamepass.
Being afraid of enemies getting in close and trying to keep your distance is what made dead space scary (along with atmosphere etc)
Oh, and no lock on button or quick turn in a game heavily reliant on hand to hand combat and dodging? Insanity
Imagine pre-ordering this turd for $60. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, BUT IN SPACEEEEE.
Yeah I'm big on atmosphere/graphics quality as well. So much so that I could let poor combat slide more so than most people.
Especially since they handed out PS5 versions only for reviews and had 150 Sony devs helping with the game.

@@5000Seabass a lot of that hype came from commentators claiming it was basically Dead Space 4, and people bought that comparison. For the purpose of this argument, I’m referring to the experience of the team *as a team*. A AAA/AAAA budget doesn’t assure a good game from a new studio. AAA by budget standards? Sure. Cohesive experience as a full-fledged studio with a proven record? Not even close.

SUP! hope you have fun with it
I’m hoping I enjoy it 😬🤞🏻
I’ve almost platinumed it, it starts off amazingly, then drops slowly becoming above average. It was still good, I would give it a 7.50/10
My main issues are:
- Inconsistent collisions, sometimes I bump into nothing on the floor and it fills me.
Good things:
- Sound and music are amazing, constantly worried about what was ahead, as the design was indicative and 3D audio correct in terms for your direction.
Pardon the typos, post-game drink out, but overall I was happy. Just that the game missed the mark, like my typos

Jake, you rock, thank you! I am one of those who came here after the before you buy. Thank you for everything you do brother.
It looks like a solid game. I've seen the roadmap, and I'll be buying this game some time next year on sale. Can't wait!
The most gorgeous looking 7/10 game I've played since The Order 1886 lol. The combat was too simple and the levels were too linear and there wasn't enough enemy variety and it wasn't very scary but somehow I really liked it 😆
Order 1886 was more like a 4/10 game tbh lol
@Lil Mikey oh so it was 10/7?
Jake, just wanted to say that I really enjoy your gaming insights, even for games I'm not interested in. Keep up and all the best.
I APPRECIATE THAT SO MUCH. really, thanks!
The whole game felt hopeless and helpless, dude... And alone, a lot lol
@@gazzy9136 isn’t that what people like from these types of games?
@@gazzy9136 that’s the point….
every time i hear Days Gone mentioned i get a little sad inside thinking about how it wont get a sequel
Callisto Protocol is undoubtedly one of the games of all time
You're not the only one bro, love your vid, keep up with the good work
Hey, I don’t know if you read these comments a day late, but I really admire your commitment to being a positive voice in the gaming space. Even when things are less than perfect, or even when they’re downright bad, you bring so much positivity to the table, and I think we all need more of that. Keep up the good work, I’ll take you up on that pizza! :)
Dude, this game is pretty much glen schofield’s take on The Shawshank Redemption and he thought bobbing and weaving like in Mike Tyson’s Punch Out
I think this is one of those games where there's just going to be a divide between most professional critics and players, similar to something like Days Gone (which is kind of funny because Sam Witwer is in both of them).
Exactly, I love it it’s a 8/10 to 9/10 for me. People complaining about the stupidest shit
@@basketballbeast755well for all the PC players I totally understand their complaints. I enjoyed the game a lot and I’m bummed PC players had so many issues
@@jeremyroberts8822 see them I get, that’s warranted. I feel bad for them as well. Everything else tho? Most of their arguments can be shot to shit.
God of war was literally 30 hours of mashing RB using the same moveset from the 2018 game and no one complained.🗿
"A classic old video game" EXACTLY THIS! I've had several discussions with my friends talking about how this game is getting DESTROYED in reviews. Nothing wrong with a simple entertaining linear game. Appreciate the review man 🙏
Feel like these days if a game isn’t 40+hrs long with different ending and a bunch of Easter eggs game journos immediately don’t like it
Nobody is gonna talk about jake's hair? 😭❤
I swear it gets better each video
I just got it free on playstation store. Totally worth it. I was really excited and then heard all the hate. I can see where people are coming from but I can't stop playing it also.
Just finished it without watching a single review, and i must say that they delivered on everything they promised. Everyone seems to forget that the first dead space was also only 12 hours long but i wouldn't have minded if the game was a bit longer. That aside well done for striking distance's first game and NG+ is coming in februari too along with new free stuff. (played on ps5 / finished on normal security and had a blast preformance wise)
Thank you Jake, will be getting this soon, hopefully I can throw my two cents in once I finish start to finish! 👌
All the performances from the cast so far have been top notch, love seeing Sam Witwer in a villainous role and I love Elias, was not expecting to encounter a guy so English he constantly says "bruv", makes me feel right at home 🤣
While horror and what's scary is very subjective, I don't know where people were getting off saying it's not scary or at the least very eerie, it has tonnes of tension and atmosphere, owing in large part to the art and sound design, in much the same way the original Dead Space had, it didn't scare me to death but it had me decently on edge and very much planted in the world it was trying to sell me on, Callisto does too.
@@Ocean5ix but the level design and enemy encounters could get some improvements.
The warden hologram was the scariest part. Almost crapped my pants.
I love this game! Only downside for me is it's not as scary as I hoped for. 9/10
Lol.
Every moment of gameplay I've seen looks exhausting. Literally just beating up the same enemies the same way for what seems like a really long time.
This is the kind of game I probably would have purchased at 60. But 70 just feels like that one step too far, unfortunately. Waiting for sale.
It's ony 10 dollars more not a big deal if you have a job. Unless you made the mistake of having a family which I didn't thankfully.
God damn, things are rough out there for some if $10 breaks the bank. But hey at least you’re willing to give it a shot when it comes down to meet your budget. Keep an open mind about it, if you have a decent screen and sound setup you will be amazed as to how immersive it really is. Despite its short comings.

Hope the dlc is a good length and hope we get a sequel in a few years.
if they actually had a real system for dodging it would have been a lot better recieved.
People forget games are fundamentally entertainment. I am enjoying it.
Also this more of a Doom like experience than even a DeadSpace one.
I really like it three hours in on PS5. All the negativity kind of puzzles me honestly.
it’s very linear and doesn’t really have survival elements or puzzles. they kept hammering “creator of Dead Space” into the marketing, but it is not really like Dead Space except for sci-fi horror theme. even the dismemberment is very different and not like what people wanted or expected
Well apparently it’s really the second half of the game that ruins the experience. Most people have fun during the first hours
@@legendofhayden As if there are non-linear survuval-horror games)
This is going to be my Christmas afternoon. Bailey's, prawns. Feet up. Can't wait.
Sucks that it’s getting review bomb but I can definitely say it’s one of my favorite games. Yeah there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement but hopefully the creative team and devs take the feedback they get from this launch and improve on it whether it’s with a sequel or dlc story content in the near future
Butcher Bay vibes huh? I will definitely play this. Just subscribed.
Yesssssss if I have to squeeze through another hallway I’m gonna lose it haha

I actually like the linearity! No question marks hunting or circling back to old places to get treasures. Just cut stuff up. This game and Evil West are both great.
You're now one of my favorite reviewers man. A new subscriber here! You keep em' coming brother.
I love this game. Just platinumed it last week! Love sci-fi games like this. Excited for the NG+ mode and story content next year.
This is a pretty cool game, it’s not a masterpiece and it’s not dead space 4, but it’s not a bad game. I’d recommend it if you have the money.
Yes, can't wait for Ralph vs. Jake battle royale cage match with Lucy and Jirrad commentating.
I finished the game about a week ago and the game’s biggest sin is that it was being a spiritual successor to Dead Space.
To be honest as soon as I saw real actors a "draw" I was worried. Seeing the combat play out makes me sad. I better be able to shoot almost anything. I hope the people I watched just suck.
The melee is big stinky doo doo and horrendous when it’s not 1v1. It’s absolutely game breaking. Which is why I refunded it.
