I watched this live and looked at my phone for literally 5 seconds to reply to a text. I look back and then I see a Samus and I was confused as hell. It was hype af though
Desmond Webber what I don't understand is that they were at the stage select screen, did Larry tell him he was going to go back and select Fox? That's what I don't get, Larry didn't actually pick Fox first to warrant the switch.
Payman Sharifi Looks like they were banning stages before choosing characters to play the next round. It was ESAM's turn to choose, and went straight to Pikachu because Larry would counter-pick Fox since he had to choose after. You can see him yell back to the crowd looking like, "I can't because he'll pick Fox." If Larry went Fox it would have been an easier win than the match he actually had.
***** I agree. I understand it was Larry's counterpick but the 1st 2 games his Pika couldn't beat Larry's Luigi so may as well stay Samus and roll your dice on Larry not knowing the matchup near as well. And who knows, maybe Larry decides to stay Luigi anyway for whatever reason.
***** You are pretty much depending on luck with this thought process. Top players won't depend on luck. And I also think ESAM is better at evaluating his chances of winning than you are. So he made the switch because to him winning Samus-Fox is less likely than winning Pikachu-Luigi. And he probably knows best.
Sabaca Depending on luck has nothing to do with my opinion. My opinion is based on the fact that esam's pikachu was beaten handily by this luigi in both games one and two. Yeah, the opponent was going to switch to Fox, but the player clearly was lost against Samus. If anything esam is depending more on luck by going pikachu since we know for a fact his opponent didn't know the samus matchup but could destroy his pikachu with luigi. And esam being a better player than me doesn't mean I can't have an opinion based on the gameplay I'm watching. Usually the player's knowledge of the matchup is much more important than whether the character to character matchup is good or bad. Just look at the Samus game. Esam's opponent had no idea what to do, he was falling for baits into Samus shots left and right and was so confused trying to dodge them he ended up SDing to lose the game. Also he ended up losing by a full stock. I don't care if he's going Fox. I believe the fact that he doesn't know how to play against Samus is more important.
lel, in PM he said that Samus was the most OP character. BTW watch this vid, ESAM wrecks so hard with Samsus tune.pk/video/3473435/sx-weekly-esam-samus-vs-pink-fresh-lucas-ssbpm-winners-semis-smash-project-m
sonnytapman The general explanation seems to be that, due to the nature of counterpicks, Larry would have switched to Fox to go up against ESAM's Samus in the next round, which is a much harder matchup to fight.
Akantor I doubt Larry would have adapted so quickly, especially since he lacks knowledge on the match up and ESAM's samus was a bit unorthodox. either way, it still did better than his pikachu, which was already losing to larry's fox.
These two were probably the coolest people I had met all day at CEO 2015. I particularly like Larry Lurr's Legendary Luigi. Woah, Larry better patent that phrase.
Her smashes may be bad, but the projectiles make up for it, like how Robin is slow but makes up for it with his attacks. Plus, once I've faced a Samus who knew a lot of combos and combo'd me a lot during the match, while being the same cheap spammer lots of Samus mains do online. Finally, there are also characters without combo games. Ones that come to mind are Pac-man and Bowser Jr. I play them both and they don't have that much combos.
Samus needs some heavy buffs man. if she kept her old n-air (the new one is crap in comparison imo) and had less lag and more hit stun with her missiles she'd be a lot better in this game. also I wish her dash grab was faster like in brawl and that her jab would actually always combo rather than only at high percents that really annoys me. her neutral game sucks big time. of all the characters I play as (being mega man, diddy kong, samus, ZSS being my 4 mains and also a bit of mario/luigi) she has the most amount of medium-high damage combos (from 25% to 45%) but landing them is very hard against a good player since most of them are with dash, u-tilt and d-air which are all pretty slow and the u-tilt and d-airs can be teched to escape the combos and even punish samus (e.g @ 8:30). larry done really well teching those in that match. even her very standard punish combo of d-throw to f-air is very easy to di from. despite all that I still love playing as samus since you can play lots of mind games with your opponent zoning them with bombs, missiles and z-airs and charging your charge shot to make them more defensive/wary. she's pretty good for edge-guarding as well and I love catching people off guard with a charge shot that's 90% charged :)
+TheRamenKamen well samus is my best character so I guess she's my "main" but yeah the others that I mentioned I'm basically just as good with I pick them depending on match ups and whatnot.
I like to edgeguard with a fast fall fair and hit them with the last hit. Even though they see the move come out very early, it's hard for the oponent to predict the timing.
at around 7:06 esam used samus's neutral air's back hit instead of a back air. not sure why he wouldn't just use back air, it looks like it comes out pretty quick..probably knows something i don't
imESAM umm actually that was nair. when i play samus i usually use it over bair just based on my fall speed. if he used bair at the same moment he used nair it probably would have gone over luigis head.
imESAM oh its really you! just look at it again. it really really really looks like nair. i play samus a lot and im nowhere near as good as you but it really looks like nair. samus does the front kick first then the back kick.
Samus was probably a better option than pikachu to match up against Lugui. The spacing and larger hit boxes of Samus made it hard for Larry to get in and get combos.
"...any reliable secondaries, I know he plays samus, but mean- you ain't about to bust out no samus..." (insert crazy samus montage here) I love samus, she is also my secondary...very underrated character and definitely is not as bad as people think she is in this game.
His Samus was such a solid counterpick, good god. Anyone think the Samus/Luigi matchup might be even? Or was this just extreme lack of knowledge with the matchup?
as a luigi main who constantly plays top level samus's in socal, (even the samus mains agree with me) samus wins the matchup by quite a lot. the main problem for luigi is 'getting in' which is almost impossible. luigi is FORCED to approach samus, while samus can charge her charged shot, and more. 65 - 35 samus, honestly once of luigis worst match ups.
Yeah, I feel for you. If Samus has one thing going for her, it's range (although F-Smash and dair don't even match up with their hitboxes). Having mained her for a few months though, I think she's incredibly underwhelming in every other regard. If her projectiles were like Brawl, she's be the worst character in the game.
Nah, it might have been arrogance. Thanks to FG, finding competent Samus players isn't that hard, and she's very basic with little to no combos past 30%. He might've underestimated her low tier position, and got ripped apart by her superior range.
As a Samus main, I doubt it. It might kinda encourage those who already had Samus as secondary to use her more, but as long as there are more braindead and effective characters, Samus'll continue to be overlooked, especially since I doubt she'll ever get the buffs she needs.
Highscore The truth is depressing. Many of the upper characters can deal with her easily and she has little else to work with that's actually effective against them. I'm not saying she's bad, but the better characters pretty much have an anti-Samus button to deal with her. She's not useless in CQC, but usually her moves aren't that great at all because they have either too much cooldown, not enough knock, or both. Her jab can't even reliably connect, when Marcina got that very buff with the latest patch. Unless she gets a much better physical attack approach option and a better method of dealing with up-close pressure (among other necessary fixes) best she'll be is a counter-pick char, like in the Luigi MU.
He can change characters as long as he picks first, which gives esam a chance to counter pick. If esam had changed characters first Larry would of been locked in.
Esam's Pikachu is so damn good, I'm surprised that it turned out like this. Though as someone who's been trying to learn Samus recently, I enjoyed watching that match a lot.
The one thing I noticed about both ESAM and MVD and why they lost is that neither of them throw enough. They have to find more strings into grabs and/or grabs into strings. They're both used to just going all out and not playing defensively at all. If they incorporated a bit of defense in there they can beat the likes of Zero, Larry, and others.
Sheep That would be SOOO hype! Yeah, Dabuz is a great player but I really despise Rosalina in Sm4sh... (Ness main) Which is ironic because she's my favorite mario princess.
You know how olimar was low tier before dabuz pulled him out at apex? So if some does good at one tournament with samus will people start thinking she is good?
Samus is clearly not the worst character in the game as the commnity seems to make out. Having an advantagus matchup against a top tier is enough to shunt her up places in the tier list. She has a more solid combo game than for example Palutena, Ganon and Zelda for example. I can see she has problems though (Jab not linking, semi active hitbox on dash attack, super missiles not very "super"), but even with all these, she still is a great character. If these things were to be fixed, I think people would finally start to see the potential of Samus.
I like how esam uses samus's options more with the Z-air and the dropdown missiles, I usually dont see any samus mains do this. Though esam could probably improve on his use of the screw attack, it is a very good move for stages like battlefield or smashville but you can be easily punished for it. Just my input on esams samus.
Should have stuck with Samus for the next game. Seriously underrated character. Her zoning/camping game is top notch. Obviously not good against a lot of top tiers but hard counterpick to Luigi IMO since his whole game revolves around running up and grabbing. Samus can just camp to win here.
***** From Esam's twitter: "i didnt stay Samus because Larry's fox wouldve DESTROYED my samus. Samus cant land and fox too fast so it doesnt work lol". So basically, Fox was the problem :[
Yea Samus is underappreciated. Thanks Nintendo. I also play Samus but not main, i very well could do that if i want to though, not enough people would do that.
Personally I don't believe in a teir list the way I see it, it's all in the player! Sure some characters are easier to be good with than anothers but if you don't know how to play even the supposedly best character they're just as bad as the supposed worse if that made any sense...
i wan't to be mad that they nerfed the ledge cancled up-b on pikachu and not bayoneta but theni remember that the up-b cancle is way worst then anything bayo can do
Yeah, that samus was so hype, and I loved his spacing with the short hop zair. And yeah I expected good samus because esam is the best project m samus(he beat armada) but I didn't think he would win because samus sux in sm4sh
Fox Luigi and Sheik been my mains since smash 64 "melee for Sheik: and now that luigi is considered top tier seems like everyone use him now. I always hate how people hop on characters just for that reason alone in any fighting game. Not saying Larry haven't been using him just as long just saying i see so many luigis these days. Esam pika is still pretty amazing prolly the best pika i seen since pika is good again in smash 4.
It's a shitty mechanic because it's essentially a get out of jail free card. Few combos actually exist because of the current airdodge system. The whole concept of being punished is practically negated by it because you're unlikely to get a meaningful punish out of it (40% aint bad until you realize how far a single stock can go in this game). It needlessly adds time to matches and was only added because of Sakurai's attempt to make the series hold no competitive depth (which ended up only hindering the series rather than killing it). Nothing good has come out of the system in it's current state and I personally think it needs to go back to the 64 version of airdodges (i.e. none) because the current system is fucking awful and we all know the Melee system will never see the light of day again because Manburrito Satchelguy still doesn't get the idea there can only be one winner.
Jake Holland Airdodges are very punishable in this game. Double jumping/getting away from your opponent instead of being right above and then fast falling is almost always better than trying to land with an airdodge in juggle situations. I honestly don't think that alone would make much of a difference to smash 4's metagame because there's still not that much hitstun. Characters who have good neutral air to fastfall with would have a tremendous advantage (they already do with airdoging).
Jake Holland well air dodging gives at least one defensive option while air born. I don't see it as a bad thing. It does add to mind games which does add more depth. And it also helps slow characters who's aerials are too slow or don't have enough priority to challenge offensive pressure. This also brings more balance to the game. And despite it being a quick escape it can be punished if used recklessly or if spammed.

ESAM @ 4:25 looking at larry's hand to figure what di and throw to use.
Hobo does that all the time that's why he stands or sits at a higher plain then his opponent
Hbox stupid auto correct
oh, yeah i think he talked about that once
imESAM Why didn't you stick with Samus, man? You seemed like you had it on lock with her in game 3.
James Gaulding if larry picked fox it would be over.
LIVING LIKE LARRY
MetagrossOverlordX Lol! Super Smash Spongebros!
A samus? ESAM uses...Samus? And he won?
ESAM confirmed Samus main and is now dropping pikachu
ESAM (as well as one of his old twitter handles, Samericus) is a portmanteau of Eric, his first name, and Samus. In Melee and PM he mains Samus.
UltraMan21 PM and Melee he mained Samus or secondary'd her
Michael Dinh he also used to main samus in brawl
UltraMan21 he should have stayed with samus, that completely caught larry off guard
lel, in PM he said that Samus was the most OP character.

Daniel Kuburoglu i don't really see how it would have been that much harder besides projectiles(which esam wasn't using much anyways)

"Using it kind of like a focus attack, as a combo breaker" TK psychic predicted Ryu like way in advance
Ryu was already in the game when this match happened.
lagalil Oh yeah, that was right after he came out.
Loving seeing some different matchups, the game is evolving!
This is living proof Samus isn't a bad character.
She doesn't have a combo game. Her smashes are pretty bad. The only thing she has is spacing, recovery, and hail Mary charge shot

Dawg Luigi kill set-ups are cake I love that green plumber
I remember watching this on Twitch. Everyone in the chat was getting so fucking hyped when he was winning with Samus
Samus was probably a better option than pikachu to match up against Lugui. The spacing and larger hit boxes of Samus made it hard for Larry to get in and get combos.

This wasn't loser quarters. That was the grand final.
Larry fuckin laughing after that first stock was great
These two are great players, and I love their interactions, both seem to be enjoying themselves a lot.

Being a pit & fox main it's fun seeing Larry's fox in action
Why did you go pack to pika!?
but he stayed luigi? he didnt change to fox? are we seeing different things? did the rules say he had to switch back after samus?
DjL theEscapade Because it was Larry's counterpick ESAM had to pick his character first, then Larry gets to change if he wants.
Liam Foote ahh I see, so he took a gamble thinking that he would re pick someone with a favorable match up to samus

Now if you are wondering how pikachu gets involved, it's obviously when a ESAM and a Samus do...( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)...and it creates a pikachu
***** I think it's technically Eternal Samus.
Although his name is Eric.
Pikachu gets involved in the storyline of brawl where Samus and Pikachu team up. So ESAM teamed up with Pika as well.
As a Samus main... This pleases me
Fox Luigi and Sheik been my mains since smash 64 "melee for Sheik: and now that luigi is considered top tier seems like everyone use him now. I always hate how people hop on characters just for that reason alone in any fighting game. Not saying Larry haven't been using him just as long just saying i see so many luigis these days. Esam pika is still pretty amazing prolly the best pika i seen since pika is good again in smash 4.
he aint bout to bust out no samus right here in top 8........
luigis signuiture kills are hot
Tip for Esam: Jump out of sheild THEN up b you will hit it more
As a samus main i feel ashamed about not knowing forward throw zair
8:48 is is a good 33% of why i disagree with sm4sh mechanics.
He shoulda stayed Samus honestly he had momentum and his pikachu wasnt getting the job done.
SAMUS!?
Lol now all the smash 4 casuals will beg for a samus nerf
I gurantee you no one wants a Samus nerf
Esam please give me smash lessons
I love the amount of "helpful tips" people try to give ESAM and Larry in the comments......😂😂
you guys in the comments dont even know how to play samus, when i go back to xanadu, I'll show you all what she can do
lol charge shot gets air dodged "he frame trapped him". Making excuses for bad mechanics smh
How exactly is air dodging a bad mecanic?
Samus mains hype!
dam i underestimate larry lurr alot hes a killer
larry is a god omg
The commentators are always shit talking samus.

Not more than project M and Smash N64 (for N64 because lack of characters).
