The Monkeys were the same way, it was a tv show and all the songs were written for them. They wanted to write and perform their own music and the producer refused. They eventually did write their own stuff, and it was good and the fans like it.

In fact, this whole thing came to light because they refused to lip sync on Milli Vanilli's follow up album. Therefore, their producers had no choice but to reveal the truth. They went on to continue to have successful careers in music, while Rob and Fab suffered greatly, and never recovered from it. RIP Rob

With all the latest advances in recording technology, voices effects can be altered and artists can sound better than they actually would live. So in my opinion these guys are no more fraudulent then any of these other pop singers...character included.
You're entirely right, Fabio. Nowadays, they would have just sung on the record and had auto-tune and crazy pitches to alter their voices in attempt to make it sound naturally talented. It's terrible how little talent there is in much of artists out there today, from big hit makers to the little guys, it's become a normal practice to doctor the hell out of vocals.
F. Mazz. The thing is this had been happening long before Milli Vanilli, but their case is he one that blew the lid on shady practices in the music industry. Before them is wasn't widely known/accepted but as their case brought things to light, in the current era people can be a lot more scrutinizing and aware and people are getting less fucked than before.

They really did these guys wrong. Some really talented average looking people wanted to use these two 22 year old gorgeous guys to lip sync their songs and then when they shot to the top they got jealous and blabbed on them. Actually I am surprised that one can actually sing.
At the end of the day a lot of people have and still do far far worse, Milli Vanilli for me are and always will be the two guys up on the stage singing and dancing away, they were and always will be awesome, yes it's a real shame that the people doing the actual singing were probably never credited with what they did, but all that apart you can't take away how fantastic the two guys on stage were, still love the songs so many years on, never get tired of them, what a horrible end for Rob Pilatus, R.I.P, Milli Vanilli lives on in Fab Morvan.

he doesn't sound too bad. the whole industry is modified voices anyways they could make him sound better recorded. many pop singers sound like crap live which is why they don't dare . this guy can sing ,dance, and has willpower to keep rebuilding.

I'm very inspired by Fab's resilience and grace, especially at the end, singing and dancing the very song that almost brought him (and did bring Rob) to complete ruin. He is the embodiment of never being defeated. I wish him all the best.

Fab came to my university on a speaking tour like in 1999. Crowd was cranky at him. We were the kids who were scammed. Fab said he could have sang the song. Someone said prove it. He did. Sang the chorus to Blame it on the Rain and for acapella did a pretty good job. He got applause and respect.

This is such a sad story... This case made them popular in one of the worst ways possible. They were taken advantage of and manipulated. Yes what they did was wrong, but it's sad how there collapse of fame and the backlash from the media happened.

I mean as they even point out in the video, this wasn't the first time that a frontman of one of Frank Farian's projects had been lip-syncing, and I highly doubt that Farian was the first to implement this idea, and he certainly wasn't the last. Maybe it was the way it was "exposed", or that Rob and Fab were the ones accepting the grammies at the awards? I don't know. Either way I just can't really see what the big scandal was. So somebody else sung, so what? What's the problem? I have a hard time visualising a really good answer to that question.
I remember being 6 or 7 yrs old asking my Mom "Why do they have an accent when they speak but not one when they're singing?". And then a few weeks after that, I found my answer.

Saddest part of all of this, growing up in the 80's & early 90's was that they mostly got ripped on because the premise was made out to be that they couldn't sing. That these big fat guys were the singers & Rob & Fab were the dancers. But the real story is they both really could sing. Frank Farian ruined their lives. One bounced back, & one bounced out. Rob could never live that night at MTV that the recording started skipping. I don't think he really ever lived that night down. It wasn't his fault. He did what they were told to do. Not even sure why everyone hung them out to dry instead of Farian. Awful story, but happy that Fab was able to maintain and move forward.

It's easy to see that now, but I wish society (and I too) had taken the time to get all the facts before making judgement. On a side note- how much does an original "Girl You Know It's True" album sell for now? Thousands of those albums were bulldozed at the time, so I doubt many originals exist now. Lots of 80s original items sell for a whole lot. Heck, I've got a 1980s skateboard in used condition, and I saw it listed on eBay for over $1,000.

Some people just don't have a Hollywood face. I work for a pretty big label and can rap my ass off writing or freestyling I've got the "Hollywood look" but I absolutely hate people knowing who I am and having my face everywhere so I write for people. Being famous is just weird to me. Anyway, when you work for a label you strive for a hot new act and start thinking strategically, "do they have sex appeal", Do they sound good dry on a live set, Do they have charisma, Would they be okay with you telling them what they shouldn't say on a song for industry politic reasons ect.... That's why independents don't make it often. They don't understand industry politics and secrets. They want to "keep it real" but sometimes if you want success you better get ready to tell a few lies, change your image...whatever it takes.

Even the girls that were in the group that were on the album even stated that Frank didnt have Bobby Farell sing on the record and all the male vocals were done by Frank. So when you hear hit songs such as Ma Baker, Rasputin, Daddy Cool, etc - its Frank Farian you here for the male part and heck, and also, one of the other girls in the group, she was lip syncing as well because she couldnt sing
And also, this stuff is timeless. I still listen to it today and it sounds great. Gotta give it up to Frank though because he does create hits despite the fact that he threw the boys under the bus in regards to what he did
Also, in regards to the "real" Milli Vanilli - Charles Shaw is the one who did Girl You Know Its True and then was fired and John Davis was brought in. In the video for Keep On Running, you do hear John and Brad's voices singing but the one guy on stage, the one with the long hair next to Gina Mohammad - Ray Horton - well, he is lip syncing Brad's vocals during that performance and all the others and Gina Mohammad is lip syncing to the voice of Jodie and Linda Rocco - they are the 2 sisters that helped create the MV sound. They were heard on the albums. Gina was able to sing a little bit when they performed live, but for the most part, she lipped it as well
Rob really has a beautiful voice all on his own. Just a shame they were taken advantage of at a young age and ruined their career. Farian had a habit of ruining his artists lives before these guys.

Watching this and hearing Fab Morvan sing for REAL, all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK was Frank Farian thinking? Rob Pilatus is dead because of his stupidity. He had a platinum act and had no reason to make them agree to the lip syncing.
Frank Farian was thinking that he, the producer could own everything. A talented, attractive singing-dancing-songwriting duo gets paid a lot for performances and gets paid for recording. Split up the roles into a set of low-paid dancer-performers, a set of low-paid studio-singer vocalists, and a set of low-paid song-writers... and the producer keeps the real cash for himself. Anyone who complains will be fired and replaced, which is what happened to the original vocalists who sang on Milli Vanilli's debut album.
Fab can sing BUT this type of music does not suit his voice. He should go for a more Prince/Tevin Campbell "slow jam" r&b. His voice would never have worked in 80's/90's dance music.
I loved their songs and the fake reveal didn't stop me from continuing to love their songs. So much so that when they said you could return their CD for a refund I kept mine and I still have it to this day lol.

It is such a shame how small incidents can end in great tragedies... There is something beautiful about live performances. It is always something new and special. It doesnt have to be perfect. I wish more singers would sing live more often.
He's a good singer after all and has a better voice than the guy who used to sing backstage or on record. They could've been successful like that anyway...when the new millions vanilla came out they didn't have any sex appeal. These two guys were the ones that had the it regardless.

Yes, he is not a great singer. It is lovely for people to do what makes them happy (even if no one else). I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments here. Also, he took vocal/music lessons after the ordeal, and used the tragedy to motivate him, likely to redeem himself- for him, fans/the world, and especially for Rob. That said, they would not have made it in their previous state. I am so pleased to see Fab persevere in his pursuit.
He certainly does not sing better than the originals. He has taken vocal/music lessons since, though, and I am quite proud of my fellow human, for pushing forward. :)

It is often overlooked how much control Fab has over his voice when making all those dance moves. He's talented, but he also trained a lot, and it does show.

Julian Gallego in my opinion the tragedy about it is what music industry does to make money. they didnt show the real talent but were -or rather still are (at times)- more interested in the looks and all that kind of things.. even tho they can acc sing they made those two lip sync and get all the blame afterwards + had to give every price they won back and so on..those two just did what they had to cuz of the contract.. except that one part of the tragedy is that rob became depression and commited suicide after that all came out

Ok, The controversy in that story is simple, was not a simple "backing track", in the begining Fab and Rob, they wasn't singing any of that songs because these voices wasn't of them. Today many singers performs with backing tracks, but "backing tracks of their own voices". Can't blame Fab and Rob, they simply signed a contract, but I think that the solution could be, by example: "private clases of singing" to Rob Pilatus, probably they could never sing that songs how they was originally created but surely could have been saved their careers. Bravo !! for Fab Morvan, at least give a proof that can sing that songs with their own voice. Sorry for Rob Pilatus. I always will remember "Milli Vanilli" with love in my heart. Greetings
i dont know how their life story has not bn made into a blockbuster movie. i think the whole thing was amazing when i was a kid i was like "yes! this happened while im alive!" lol and then even their lives following it all were interesting and tragic.
That's a point a lot of people don't get. Even though they didn't actually sing any of the songs, I don't believe ANYONE can say that what they did do (get up in front of a lot of people and dance) isn't something that requires talent. They had a great deal of skill in public performing that the real singers didn't have. I think it would've worked out best for everyone if Frank Farian had let them sing in addition to the real singers, and just told everyone in advance who the other singers are and that the 2 dancers weren't the only singers.

With all the latest advances in recording technology, voices effects can be altered and artists can sound better than they actually would live. So in my opinion these guys are no more fraudulent then any of these other pop singers...character included.

You're entirely right, Fabio. Nowadays, they would have just sung on the record and had auto-tune and crazy pitches to alter their voices in attempt to make it sound naturally talented. It's terrible how little talent there is in much of artists out there today, from big hit makers to the little guys, it's become a normal practice to doctor the hell out of vocals.
F. Mazz. The thing is this had been happening long before Milli Vanilli, but their case is he one that blew the lid on shady practices in the music industry. Before them is wasn't widely known/accepted but as their case brought things to light, in the current era people can be a lot more scrutinizing and aware and people are getting less fucked than before.

At the end of the day a lot of people have and still do far far worse, Milli Vanilli for me are and always will be the two guys up on the stage singing and dancing away, they were and always will be awesome, yes it's a real shame that the people doing the actual singing were probably never credited with what they did, but all that apart you can't take away how fantastic the two guys on stage were, still love the songs so many years on, never get tired of them, what a horrible end for Rob Pilatus, R.I.P, Milli Vanilli lives on in Fab Morvan.

I'm very inspired by Fab's resilience and grace, especially at the end, singing and dancing the very song that almost brought him (and did bring Rob) to complete ruin. He is the embodiment of never being defeated. I wish him all the best.

Fab came to my university on a speaking tour like in 1999. Crowd was cranky at him. We were the kids who were scammed. Fab said he could have sang the song. Someone said prove it. He did. Sang the chorus to Blame it on the Rain and for acapella did a pretty good job. He got applause and respect.

This is such a sad story... This case made them popular in one of the worst ways possible. They were taken advantage of and manipulated. Yes what they did was wrong, but it's sad how there collapse of fame and the backlash from the media happened.

I mean as they even point out in the video, this wasn't the first time that a frontman of one of Frank Farian's projects had been lip-syncing, and I highly doubt that Farian was the first to implement this idea, and he certainly wasn't the last. Maybe it was the way it was "exposed", or that Rob and Fab were the ones accepting the grammies at the awards? I don't know. Either way I just can't really see what the big scandal was. So somebody else sung, so what? What's the problem? I have a hard time visualising a really good answer to that question.

Saddest part of all of this, growing up in the 80's & early 90's was that they mostly got ripped on because the premise was made out to be that they couldn't sing. That these big fat guys were the singers & Rob & Fab were the dancers. But the real story is they both really could sing. Frank Farian ruined their lives. One bounced back, & one bounced out. Rob could never live that night at MTV that the recording started skipping. I don't think he really ever lived that night down. It wasn't his fault. He did what they were told to do. Not even sure why everyone hung them out to dry instead of Farian. Awful story, but happy that Fab was able to maintain and move forward.

It's easy to see that now, but I wish society (and I too) had taken the time to get all the facts before making judgement.
On a side note- how much does an original "Girl You Know It's True" album sell for now? Thousands of those albums were bulldozed at the time, so I doubt many originals exist now.
Lots of 80s original items sell for a whole lot. Heck, I've got a 1980s skateboard in used condition, and I saw it listed on eBay for over $1,000.

Some people just don't have a Hollywood face. I work for a pretty big label and can rap my ass off writing or freestyling I've got the "Hollywood look" but I absolutely hate people knowing who I am and having my face everywhere so I write for people. Being famous is just weird to me. Anyway, when you work for a label you strive for a hot new act and start thinking strategically, "do they have sex appeal", Do they sound good dry on a live set, Do they have charisma, Would they be okay with you telling them what they shouldn't say on a song for industry politic reasons ect....
That's why independents don't make it often. They don't understand industry politics and secrets. They want to "keep it real" but sometimes if you want success you better get ready to tell a few lies, change your image...whatever it takes.

Even the girls that were in the group that were on the album even stated that Frank didnt have Bobby Farell sing on the record and all the male vocals were done by Frank. So when you hear hit songs such as Ma Baker, Rasputin, Daddy Cool, etc - its Frank Farian you here for the male part and heck, and also, one of the other girls in the group, she was lip syncing as well because she couldnt sing
And also, this stuff is timeless. I still listen to it today and it sounds great. Gotta give it up to Frank though because he does create hits despite the fact that he threw the boys under the bus in regards to what he did
Also, in regards to the "real" Milli Vanilli - Charles Shaw is the one who did Girl You Know Its True and then was fired and John Davis was brought in. In the video for Keep On Running, you do hear John and Brad's voices singing but the one guy on stage, the one with the long hair next to Gina Mohammad - Ray Horton - well, he is lip syncing Brad's vocals during that performance and all the others and Gina Mohammad is lip syncing to the voice of Jodie and Linda Rocco - they are the 2 sisters that helped create the MV sound. They were heard on the albums. Gina was able to sing a little bit when they performed live, but for the most part, she lipped it as well

Watching this and hearing Fab Morvan sing for REAL, all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK was Frank Farian thinking? Rob Pilatus is dead because of his stupidity. He had a platinum act and had no reason to make them agree to the lip syncing.
Frank Farian was thinking that he, the producer could own everything. A talented, attractive singing-dancing-songwriting duo gets paid a lot for performances and gets paid for recording. Split up the roles into a set of low-paid dancer-performers, a set of low-paid studio-singer vocalists, and a set of low-paid song-writers... and the producer keeps the real cash for himself. Anyone who complains will be fired and replaced, which is what happened to the original vocalists who sang on Milli Vanilli's debut album.
Fab can sing BUT this type of music does not suit his voice. He should go for a more Prince/Tevin Campbell "slow jam" r&b. His voice would never have worked in 80's/90's dance music.
I loved their songs and the fake reveal didn't stop me from continuing to love their songs. So much so that when they said you could return their CD for a refund I kept mine and I still have it to this day lol.

He's a good singer after all and has a better voice than the guy who used to sing backstage or on record. They could've been successful like that anyway...when the new millions vanilla came out they didn't have any sex appeal. These two guys were the ones that had the it regardless.

Also, he took vocal/music lessons after the ordeal, and used the tragedy to motivate him, likely to redeem himself- for him, fans/the world, and especially for Rob. That said, they would not have made it in their previous state. I am so pleased to see Fab persevere in his pursuit.
He certainly does not sing better than the originals. He has taken vocal/music lessons since, though, and I am quite proud of my fellow human, for pushing forward. :)

in my opinion the tragedy about it is what music industry does to make money. they didnt show the real talent but were -or rather still are (at times)- more interested in the looks and all that kind of things.. even tho they can acc sing they made those two lip sync and get all the blame afterwards + had to give every price they won back and so on..those two just did what they had to cuz of the contract.. except that one part of the tragedy is that rob became depression and commited suicide after that all came out

Ok, The controversy in that story is simple, was not a simple "backing track", in the begining Fab and Rob, they wasn't singing any of that songs because these voices wasn't of them. Today many singers performs with backing tracks, but "backing tracks of their own voices". Can't blame Fab and Rob, they simply signed a contract, but I think that the solution could be, by example: "private clases of singing" to Rob Pilatus, probably they could never sing that songs how they was originally created but surely could have been saved their careers. That's a point a lot of people don't get. Even though they didn't actually sing any of the songs, I don't believe ANYONE can say that what they did do (get up in front of a lot of people and dance) isn't something that requires talent. They had a great deal of skill in public performing that the real singers didn't have. I think it would've worked out best for everyone if Frank Farian had let them sing in addition to the real singers, and just told everyone in advance who the other singers are and that the 2 dancers weren't the only singers.
