im a former super heavyweight powerlifter. i started riding a bike in the morning. love it. trying to lose weight. a lot of weight. wish me luck. Happy 2020.
JuanRacc thanks man. i started running everyday since 4/6/2020. on that day i was 378lbs. at 6’3”(powerlifter) today 4/30/2020 i’m 345lbs. im not starving myself but so far i’m running 30-50min a day depending how my body feels. it’s tough for sure sometimes i can only walk and then somedays i can run hard. anyways im feeling better and love my new lifestyle!
This is inaccurate: air quality, especially in urban areas, is unfortunately worse at night and especially during the first hours of the morning, as those are also the coldest/more moist, and cold air stays close to the ground trapping smog and particles. But the fact that the air is cool gives the sensation of freshness, and the false feeling that it is cleaner. This is the only downside I see to running in the morning, that you are breathing in air in the worst possible moment of the day!
I love running in the morning. The weather is cool, I don't have to respect traffic lights, and I have much better focus for the first few hours at work. I swear, after a good run it's like I'm bursting with energy and positivity.
I've become an Urban commute runner. It's just 3.2 miles to work, but it fits in well, and I've learned to pack organise my running pack, so leave a change of clothes in work, arrive quick wash, get changed, then double bonus you have to run home after, it's an easy 6 miles in a day, and on top that that I'm home before traffic, versus going in the car..... 😄👍
Hi, I have a saloman running bag, worth getting a decent quality one if possible if you can, ive got an old Saloman xa 20. I leave a change of clothes in work, and a suitable pair of work shoes, Boots in my case, leave some shower gel, get a shower in work if possible, or a body wash is more than fine, so leave a towel/shower gel in work, the only thing i really bring to work in my pack is a change of underwear, and a pair of Socks, and some food for the day, make sure to well back if you are going to bring it. Another good idea it too preload your bag with what you need the evening before, and have your running gear ready. In addition, find some where in work for your clothes to dry out, but always bring a spare running T-shirt so if it is still wet you can swap it out.
Great, nothing better than running commuting, something I've done since my first job when I was 16. Always a plus when it ends up being faster than driving, public transport or even cycling when traffic is busy. Definitely all comes down to preparation, keeping a well stocked draw in work of change of clothes, shower and food!
I used to hate to run in the morning, now its my favorite time. The morning run starts with getting in bed eight hours ahead of time. I run fasted, which sets the pace for the whole day's eating. Many other reasons including its much cooler in the summer, a postponed run is a run more vulnerable to being bumped out of existence, and if I bail on the morning run, I have a chance to make it up later.
I've been an evening/night runner for years and I even have a first shift job. I typically run after 10pm. I've never liked getting right out of bed and doing something strenuous. 10am is the earliest I think that I could run well, and I think that's why I don't do a well as desired during 8am road races.
Wow 10pm runs, that's a very dedicated approach to your training. If that is the way your body is in rhythm to train then it will suit you better by the sounds of your shift work, certainly will make those 8am races tough though. Leading up to a goal race it would be beneficial to try and temporarily shift your running routine to get yourself feeling fresher for the early start.
RossKempOnYourMum01 I've been doing it for over 12 years so I don't think too much about it. I think it depends on where you live too, the types of roads, and what gender you might be. I'm in a fairly nice residential area in central Michigan but it's still pretty rural and I'm a male. No street lights and very minimal traffic and I only run on side streets when it's dark. I might see five cars in an hour of running. I just run under the stars and ambient light and only turn on my flashlight to make myself visible to the occasional car. I've got friends of the opposite sex who simply say that running at night is not an option. If I run far from the house on the main roads I'll do my runs in the daylight, but never before 10am lol.
Harry Runs I completely agree about trying to get used to running in the morning leading up to a race. This is the first year that I've been taking running seriously in the last decade and I've been waking up two hours earlier than usual on race day just so that my body feels like it's 10am when the race starts. Going on 33 years old and I'm trying to chase down my old high school times! If you had to break your weekly (or whatever time period you work with) mileage/kilometers into percentages based on effort exerted, what would your week look like?
I started running a few months ago in the morning before breakfast. I started because of stress, gas, bloating, constipation, indigestion and insomnia. I started off every other day. It all happened at the lock down because of covid. I had time to start taking care of my mental and physical health. My goal is to run everyday. I enjoyed your video. I have also have been seeing an ayurvedic doctor for lifestyle changes which is helping a lot. I have improvement in these conditions still flare up at times but I know my goal is to keep doing all the positive things. I am looking forward to a healthy 2020.
I'm a nurse and I work in critical care for 12 hours. I get my runs in at 5 am otherwise I would not be able to do it after 12 hours on my feet at all. I only do 5k the days I work and then I go for lovely long runs on my off days (I work 3 to 4 days a week and I still run 6 of them)
I am a big morning runner. I always view it better to use your legs first, instead of use yours legs last, at the end of the day. I work in a hospital, and I am on my feet 10-12 hours a day, and this makes it very difficult to go on a run at the very end of the day. Plus, less likely to make an excuse of why work was "so bad" that i should take today off.
Having worked retail and teaching in the past for many years, definitely know that sensation of fatigued training after a day on the legs at work. Makes for some great Ultra training though :-p
Thanks for this video! I kinda just run when I feel like it during the day. I am in high school and I do it online at home so I can go when I want usually. Sometimes I don't end up going though and not having a set time during the day makes it hard to be consistent. After watching this I am going to try running mornings consistently for a while. Thanks for all you do on this channel!
I do my morning run as well. But I need to work on more of my form. Other wise I am getting tougher and that I do get adequate sleep and being creative. I also live in the city, getting out of the pavement and doing trail running is my dream. Having a lake, challenge, and my passion of being outdoor enthusiast is a key to living as avid illustrator.
Great advise, I've been a morning runner since the last 5 years. I never run in the afternoon/evening, because there're just too many vehicles on the road, and in the park always packed with families with their children, can't really enjoy my run freely like that, in the morning I can roam freely as I like and as you said running very early (I usually start my session at 5.30 AM) gives positive energy to the body, I always feel refreshed after each session and I feel like I can survive my 10 hours work at the office.
Great to hear Daniel, 100% agree with you on this point, traffic really just builds up throughout the day, much more fun when you have the roads, pavements and world to yourself, when you get out nice and early in the morning!
I love easy runs in the morning but have never been able to do a tempo run after getting out of bed. My joints feel really tight in the morning but an easy run works just fine and gets me fired up for the day.
I've just started the couch25k and run(!) at around 6am three times a week. I have been in a health kick for about 3years and always workout before work. Kettlebells, skipping, rowing or cycling. It's great to start three day with a sweat. Gives me energy and focus. I also train fasted which burns lots of calories and amps up HGH.
What do you have for breakfast before your morning run? Also, how many hours before you start your run? And does what you eat for breakfast change depending on how long of a run you are planning to do? Thanks
Great question Jeff, for the most part I usually run fasted in the morning after eating a carbohydrate focused meal the night before. If it is a longer run 2 hours plus I will have some water melon or a banana or two and take some dried fruit or Runivore bars with me if I am going very long. My main concern the training in the heat an humidity is getting enough water so always makes sure on waking I drink 2 big glasses of water and take water with me depending on the length and intensity of the run. If racing I will make sure I eat no later than 2 hours before the race, if its an Ultra usually that would involve oats (soaked or as porridge) with bananas.
Yes, always the best... As your burn fat stored in the body and not sugar in the blood you would have had if you had breakfast. All you nedd is to hydrate a little whem you wake up ad when you return. But I guess that's common sense. Congrats and thanks for the motivation. I am not doing so well myaelf at the moment. Going to try and change that stsrting tomorrow.
Awesome advice Harry, I love getting up early & going for a run up the hills & bush, I run 12km mon wed fri & bike ride tue & Thursday afternoons I'm 53 I enjoy the morning runs but look forward to the morning rest tue & Thursday gives the body rest & recovey, I ran a half marathon last year 1.31 my goal is 1.20 any ideas how I can improve with out injury? :-)
I just bought a pair of under armour sonic 2 hovr they are bluetooth enabled they MAP MY RUN and even give me tips on my stride now no need for my fitbit.
Totally agree, though sometimes I feel a bit more lazy especially if I didn´t get enough sleep the night before. Normally I like morning run during weekend, especially when hitting the trail. Now having a break as being a dad takes more time and want to make my wife happy for these first months, but I am looking forward to run again, maybe to pack my runs during office hours at least.
+Javier I. Sampedro congratulations on being a Dad. Sleep is a big part of it and getting to bed early enough is a must for training consistency in the mornings. Definitely a lunch run is a great use of time and will help the rest of the work day fly by!
I haven't run in over a month and feel something is missing. I will take it easy when I manage to get on a run, but I may press the gas haha. Keep it up with the videos. So envy those trails, and even more for your coming CCC. I was last summer doing the OCC and it was a great experience. Cheers!
Good video! Im a huge fan of the morning run! That sense of accomplishment + creativity are two of my main reasons for getting up and working out in the AM!
With morning runs: 1. I'm more of a night owl who loves the night time not in terms of running, but in general. Is it really that worth changing from evening runs (which do have those challenges you speak about) to morning runs? 2. How do you avoid the feeling of tiredness after lunch at work? It seems that morning exercise takes its toll later in the day. Thanks.
Just as anything Malinga a new routine takes some time to adapt to, if you are a night owl as you say then it would take a little time for you to switch up your bodies typical daily rhythm and part of that switch would be adopting an earlier bed time perhaps which would allow you to wake earlier without losing sleep and potentially feeling fresher than usual. Healthy and well balanced eating and hydration help with energy levels remaining stable throughout the day. I would recommend focusing on whole food plant based meals to provide the body with plenty of nutrients and nutritious meals to give you great energy from morning to night!
Is my height an advantage or a disadvantage? I'm 6'5" and noticing that those finishing ahead of me are similar build but are much shorter. Great videos, please keep them up!
An advantage to running in the early morning before and/or around sunrise is not getting sunburnt. I finish my runs before the UV rays become effective.
Most races are in the morning so it's best to train and workout early. Growth hormones and testosterone is higher if you sleep earlier. Earlier you do your run more calories you can get in ready for a double and more calories in the whole day before bed.
Anyone else feel heavy and sluggish when you run in the morning? A park close to my house is exactly 1500m a lap and when I run in the night/evening I feel unstoppable like I could go on for hours. But in the morning just one lap would kill me. Tried everything to prepare but my body just wont co-operate, anyone have tips?
Haha definitely agree with the later of that statement during a hard training block, sometimes you just have to lace up and get going before the mind has a chance to double guess.
Hey Aimiliano, I currently run a lot of my training miles in the Hoka One One Clifton 3, it's light, fast and neutral so allows your foot to roll through your stride its natural placement whilst having great cushioning to take some of that pounding from the roads out of the legs! www.hokaoneone.com/mens-road/clifton-3/1012046.html?dwvar_1012046_color=BRON#start=12&cgid=mens-road
To get specific here, what time does everyone consider the "morning", I am traditionally not a 6 am riser type of person, but is that what it is recommended?
When you think it's weird people are (still) out running at 11 am, then you're probably early enough! :D Imo, it all starts with bedtime and/or lifestyle, once you embraced the idea that you're a morning runner, you will be in bed by 9 pm, wake up at 04.45, will become an abstainer, a sound eater, won't bother for trivia, be out running long before breakfast at about 05.40, not thinking but feeling rather that's the most natural thing to do.
i prefer to run in the evening, but the problem is that after a run i feel so energetic, that it's really hard to fall asleep early. So morning runs are probably best, but i will have to work on going to bed really early so i can get up at 5.30. that will be tough for me...
That is tough, I've had to wake up at 4:45 in the past to get out those 5am morning runs, its tough but if you are motivated you can make it happen. I'm the same though it can be hard to relax after a great evening run!
hey! i need a little advice... when school begins i will have a lot less time for running. i want to maintain my running mileage and improve but i dont know if i can combine it with basketball training. i train monday and thursday and havr matched on sunday. at what days can i run but not overtrain? btw im 14
I think so, I have a pair & absolutely love them ! They are the best shoes hands down if you do a lot of weekly mileage and want a comfortable shoe. I however, would never wear them when racing because they are a bit bulky and its harder to maintain a high cadence (190+ spm) in my opnion
Hey James, yes HOKA ONE ONE's. I wear Clifton 3's for most of my road miles and Speedgoats on the trails. I recommend trying them out if you haven't before see how they feel for you.
Not that motivated to get up early for a run. If I had sponsorship commitments & support from Hoka One One - I will definitely wake up early. All my training runs are after work around 8 pm. I tried 7 am, but then the SoCal sun is up and a 60-90' shuffle becomes a sufferfest. While most of the reasons you mentioned are clichéd, I realize that it's all about how you perceive. It's a good habit for sure 😃
Firstly, make sure to get enough sleep (for your age probably around 8-9h), secondly you will have to make it a habit getting up early. When you wake up in the morning, just count down from 5 and then get up immediately. You will probably feel pretty tired for the first week, but after you continuously wake up early and go straight up from your bed, your body will be used to it and have a easier time waking up in the morning.
i actually disagree. morning running kinda sucks and is a disincentive for me. having a kid i need to be home in the morning but everyone else running in the morning makes it impossible to join a group. running first thing in the morning i am tight and more likely to get injured. i am also trying to hurry my run because i have a strict time limit...and i am not fueled as well if i had run later.
Totally understand Alan, can imagine things are a lot more difficult with a kid to look after. Once you get into a routine of running in the morning the tightness subsides quickly or is less present as your body is in tune with the new rhythm. If running in the evening works well for you and your routine that's fantastic keep it up!
In the morning I sleep. There is no urge for me to wake up in the morning so I sleep till I'm fresh, then I wake up, have a nutritious light breakfast (fruits and gel) and head to my seassion. That's peak of my day. I'm unemployed.
It can take some getting used to and of course easier in the summer than winter if daylight hours change a lot where you are in the world. Can be fun running in the dark as long as you have a quality headlamp and reflectors if you are on the road. More fun than any on the trails in the dark with a head torch beam and racing the sunrise to the summit.
If you stay consistent with it, it gets easier and a slight adjustment to your sleeping patterns may help. Be sure to make sure you eat some quality food after, I always recommend a fruit hit straight after a run, some bananas, watermelon, or pineapple are my favourite.
Love that feeling of accomplishment before most people are even awake!
im a former super heavyweight powerlifter. i started riding a bike in the morning. love it. trying to lose weight. a lot of weight. wish me luck. Happy 2020.
Best of luck, keep at it and don’t give up!
JuanRacc thanks man. i started running everyday since 4/6/2020. on that day i was 378lbs. at 6’3”(powerlifter)

9 months later, how’s it going now??
One more advantage of running in the morning is that the urban air tends to be less polluted then than in the evening.
Great point Prasenjit!
I never thought of that
This is inaccurate: air quality, especially in urban areas, is unfortunately worse at night and especially during the first hours of the morning, as those are also the coldest/more moist, and cold air stays close to the ground trapping smog and particles. But the fact that the air is cool gives the sensation of freshness, and the false feeling that it is cleaner. This is the only downside I see to running in the morning, that you are breathing in air in the worst possible moment of the day!
@@valeriaagamennone6604 , thanks for sharing this insight. Was not aware.
Valeria Agamennone hows it get worse(I’m not disagreeing with you) but I got nothing wrong with running in the moist and cold.
Morning runs works for me. Mind clear. Problems sorted. Day ahead planned. 😃
Spot on Slow but steady Vegan!

are you a doctor?
Why do I relate to this so hard haha

I'm thinking of doing this - do you run with a bag or something? how do you get your clothes to/from work
Hi,
I have a saloman running bag, worth getting a decent quality one if possible if you can, ive got an old Saloman xa 20.

Great work! I always enjoy running first thing in the morning and having that mental sort out for the day. Have fun on your next run Tyrese!
Hello I am from 2021
Morning running for the win!!! And, there's less traffic and you feel as though the streets/trails are all yours! Thank you for your great insight!
"Having an adventure" such a great incentivising way to describe the benefits. Great video
i love goin for a walk just 30 mins before sunrise , when its lil bit dark, i sooo love the early morning vibes when there are not many people around
Great reasons to run in the morning! Feels awesome in the summer when you get out before it gets really hot
Great points! Very true line ' a postponed run is a run more vulnerable to being bumped out of existence'. Start the day off right with an adventure!
Morning runs are the best for sure 👍
I've been an evening/night runner for years and I even have a first shift job. I typically run after 10pm. I am a night runner too but don't you feel odd/conspicuous out at 10pm? Latest I go is 8 (in the summer when it's still light)
Wow 10pm runs, that's a very dedicated approach to your training. If that is the way your body is in rhythm to train then it will suit you better by the sounds of your shift work, certainly will make those 8am races tough though. Morning runners tend to fast for practical reasons. Eat carbs before bed.
a couple dates and I'm good for over 2 hours easy
I never eat before a morning run, nor if it's a race that begins by 10 o clock, up to half marathon distance.

Harry Runs what about caffeine. Any before runs or other “prework outs”
I liked your healthy decisions point, that was a great point
The benefits of running in the morning are bloody fantastic.

Awesome Jordan!
should I eat before running?
With morning runs:
I run in the morning, in the dark, not for health. It just feels different and if i don't think about its like being taken back to a simpler time.
Is 6 am runs good 👍 I going to start tmrw Monday November 2d but I got school
Run in the morning for revenge my life , physically mentally and financially !!
Best thing ever ... morning run checked ✔️
Tried everything to prepare but my body just wont co-operate, anyone have tips?
i found the same but you start to get used to it if u make it a habit
I have got insomnia and doing a morning run all going well. Heading out at 8am.
Are you still running did your insomnia stop because of running?
runs in the morning burns more fat than weight training FACT!
Really??
Sajith Sadanandan well Yh weight training builds muscle
running always burns more fat than weight training. FACT
Best time of day! Gets it done and doesn't allow my body to wake up and realise what i'm doing!
Haha definitely agree with the later of that statement during a hard training block, sometimes you just have to lace up and get going before the mind has a chance to double guess.
i would like to buy a new running shoe. neutral shoe. what do you suggest? thanks
:D Imo, it all starts with bedtime and/or lifestyle, once you embraced the idea that you're a morning runner, you will be in bed by 9 pm, wake up at 04.45, will become an abstainer, a sound eater, won't bother for trivia, be out running long before breakfast at about 05.40, not thinking but feeling rather that's the most natural thing to do.
what can i do to improve in cross country
I get my running done by 7am in the mornings because I get hungry by 10am and I don't like eating before.also I'm a morning person✌️
Definitely relieves anxiety
i prefer to run in the evening, but the problem is that after a run i feel so energetic, that it's really hard to fall asleep early.
Hi Harry, if you wake up at 4:45, what time do you go to bed to sleep ?
It also makes breakfast taste so much better :)
hey! i need a little advice... when school begins i will have a lot less time for running. i want to maintain my running mileage and improve but i dont know if i can combine it with basketball training. i train monday and thursday and havr matched on sunday. at what days can i run but not overtrain? btw im 14
Exercise mkaes you smarter and impoeves decision making skills.
100%
What running shoes do you wear?
Hoka One One 👌
Moe Yes, which ones....Clifton 3?
It doesn't matter how early I go to bed, I am always so tired that getting up is painful, I'm 15 anyone know how I can get up easier?
Firstly, make sure to get enough sleep (for your age probably around 8-9h), secondly you will have to make it a habit getting up early. When you wake up in the morning, just count down from 5 and then get up immediately. You will probably feel pretty tired for the first week, but after you continuously wake up early and go straight up from your bed, your body will be used to it and have a easier time waking up in the morning.
Do you eat breakfast first .... then run? Or run first?
Hi. I wonder if I need to eat something before my run in the morning. I want to burn fat.. So should I eat something or not? Thanks :)
Who else is watching this before bed 😅
i actually disagree. morning running kinda sucks and is a disincentive for me. having a kid i need to be home in the morning but everyone else running in the morning makes it impossible to join a group. running first thing in the morning i am tight and more likely to get injured. i am also trying to hurry my run because i have a strict time limit...and i am not fueled as well if i had run later.
Sounds great Tomáš if you are unemployed and in the position to not rush around then the extra sleep will do wonders for recovery.
I wish I was unemployed too, u r so lucky.
But do you perform as well in the morning when you haven't eaten?
I would love to run in the morning out on the trails or the roads but I don't like the idea of running in the dark every morning.
Have to go in the morning or I'll become a fried bean in 120 degree weather. Plus, I'll just nap during the afternoon if nothing is going on.
when I do a run in the morning it knackers me for rest of day haha
tvqueen1905 Proper good food throughout the day +nap maybe?
If you stay consistent with it, it gets easier and a slight adjustment to your sleeping patterns may help. Be sure to make sure you eat some quality food after, I always recommend a fruit hit straight after a run, some bananas, watermelon, or pineapple are my favourite.
Harry Runs thanks so much
I'm gonna give a try but I like to sleep in let's see if I can get out of that funk=)
Good luck!
