Thank you for sharing where to cut and why. I especially like hearing how best to cut the branch to allow healing. Please keep sharing the science of the activity. It is not just to make it look pretty. Thank you, Laura🙏
This is an underrated video. I just learned so much
You make me feel like “I can do it!l. Thank you.
She always does, doesn't she?
Pruning is one of the most satisfying garden jobs, instant gratification from the improved appearance! Both look so much better! 👍❤️
I'm so much more confident pruning now after watching all your pruning videos. Super helpful and easy to understand.
Good Video. Rule of Thumb for Fruit Trees us to Prune during Coldest time of year. Also Fruit Tree Branches should grow at approximately 45° angle. Your pruning was good for your trees. The sap will cover and help the healing process. Plus doing in winter insects can't get into pruned area and kill. Peace Be With You ☮️
Good to know about the insect thing... hadn't really thought of that!
Thank you for the tree pruning lesson. Perhaps a video on shrub pruning i.e., weigalia, hydrangea, rhododendrons, azalea, etc., in the near future?
I appreciate seeing this, as looking at pictures isn't as helpful. I've always been afraid of doing something wrong. Now I have a good idea of what to look for. Thanks so much.
Hey! I am a certified arborist and I have to say this was a pretty good pruning intro! The only comment I have is when pruning the other leader on the first tree ("subordinating") you want to bring it back to node that can heal over. This idea is similar to the branch collar technique you pointed out. Typically you want to prune back to a lateral branch at least 1/3 the diameter of the piece you are cutting off. On such a young and vigorous tree this won't matter, just a minor detail for anyone interested! For more specific details like this, the ANSI A300 standards are a great guide
I have some type of "rose tree" in the front that has been pruned to look like a giant lollipop.
I see there are several branches behind the densed ball of leaves.
Can this type of tree be pruned into a topiary with several balls instead of a lollipop shape?
jzizzles theoretically sure, though roses and other more garden type species are really outside of my expertise particularly without knowing the species
How fun is that we have gardening videos in the winter ♥️
I pruned a Japanese maple last February. I had a hard time finding a good video or photos to guide me, but followed what I could find. This video had all the same guidelines. My tree looked amazing after the pruning - it’s structure looked so beautiful without leaves and it looked great once it leafed out too.
Hi Laura! My day is great now that I’m off work and come home and sit down and watch some of your videos. The loppers look awesome nice nice loppers thank you for your instruction and your help you’re so talented in all that you do
Growing up in the garden center and having the garden you have from both your houses... you may be an expert. Even the experts dont know eeevvverything. You have been around gardening all your life. Own it girl.
I watched this video when it originally posted and then watched it again (3 yrs later) as I’m getting ready to prune my own young trees and it’s funny how different Laura’s voice is lol!! I love this channel and I often refer back to previously viewed videos when getting ready to tackle garden projects and maintenance! Thanks for all you do Laura and Aaron!!
LOL @ “this one has an aoweee” 😂😂
This is a great reminder! I have some older lilacs that need this opening up along with 3 old apple trees. While we let the deer 🦌 have the apples I want them to continue growing and when they bloom it’s so lovely!
Hi Laura. I love, love, love this video! Pruning is my absolute favorite thing to do in the garden. I love keeping my trees tidy and improving their health. Thanks for all the tips.
Thank you, Laura. You've inspired me to go out in the melting snow to do some pruning. It's actually going to be 40 here in Michigan today. Nice working weather.
I’m so glad you made this video and addressed multi trunk. We planted three multi trunk last spring. We also have 3 native trees that need major cleaning up. I thought I had to wait until early spring but now I’m encouraged to get out and get it done now!
I really like this video. I didn't know a lot about tree pruning and now I know that I've been making a few mistakes in cutting my own. Thank you Laura and Aaron.
huh, interesting about the branch collar. I haven't heard that being discussed in gardening videos before.
I love your pruning videos. They have helped me a lot last year already with my ornamental crab, apple tree and my hydrangeas! Thank you so much!
I love pruning shrubs and trees! I feel like it is an easily overlooked task in the garden. Loads of great information as always! Thank you and happy new year 🎉🌳✂️✂️
Great pruning video. Have 3 crabapples to tackle plus many fruit trees. Also a few very large willows to prune up. Thanks for the confidence to do these.
Bravo!!! If there were only one video to watch from you this one Is IT. It will be forever to keep. I made a star next to the email so I will always have it to find easy.
Thank you very much. This video was a great help. You were thoughtful to think of us, when you started your videotaping. Because we are all at different stages in terms of gardening knowledge and skills, you would never know what bites of info you give us will fulfill a definite need.
Thank you so much for sharing Laura! I always enjoy your videos! Trimming is a great way to encourage new growth for the years to come. Great video!
Great timing, as always! I have about 7 trees that I need to do this with this year, but the rain won’t stop long enough for me to get out there and do it! 😕We have a very short cool season here in order to do this. Our trees are only dormant for a couple of months. Hopefully we will get some dry weather by this weekend and I can tackle this with confidence now! Thank y’all so much for doing this video! 🙌💚♥️
Great video!! I've started within the last couple of years pruning my trees. It is really hard when you first start. Your pruning your parents tree's, I started to feel more confident about pruning!! Thanks for that. I love watching your videos❣❣❣
This is so helpful to me because I have a Magnolia soulangiana that needs extensive pruning. Thanks for all the good information and education you provide to us.
I can’t wait to see these trees this summer, be sure and show us!
Thanks, heading out this Saturday to prune the small trees in the backyard. 😀
Thanks Laura! I think I can confidently do some tree pruning! Very good information!👍🏼
What a helpful pruning video!!
Thank you for the guidelines and encouragement!
Perfect timing. I need this to help me with my tree in the back.
Great video. I sharpened all my pruners on Wednesday, now I’m ready to go!
Thank u! I did not know to prune my fruit trees in winter. They r a mess. Glad to get this info.
Great tips! They look so much better/healthy! Happy trees! I didn't realize you could do that in the middle of winter. I thought it was a late winter/early spring thing. Good to know! Thank you!
Thank you for the pruning tips. I learned some new tips I can use this year.
Thanks Laura! Great video on pruning!!
Thx for encouraging me to get out during winter to get a head start!
Great video! I loved the before and after on the “Reshaping one of our flower beds”. Would love more of the before and after pictures especially on the tree trimming. Thanks for all your wonderful videos and Happy New Year!
You are a very good teacher Laura.i have learnt alot from you though yours and my growing conditions are totally different.Luv the way you explain while doing things.
I wish I had watched this video before trimming two small trees recently. As I’m watching, I see I made some mistakes but thankfully the trees are doing fine. Thank you for posting!
This was such a great video! Thank you Laura!!
Laura, you did a FABULOUS job on those trees!
Спасибо за видео. Как раз собиралась заняться этим в выходные.
This is great! I'm usually so nervous about pruning but now I'll be more confident with my pruners. Knowledge is power! Lol
Great video! I let our bottle brushes go and my husband and I will be drastically pruning them soon. I paused your video to buy online a pack of clear safety glasses since I remembered how close we were poking our eyes while trimming last time. Looking forward to your results, both trees looked great after your pruning. 😊👓🤓
I know you’ve made videos in the past about tool cleaning and upkeep. I wanted to offer a recommendation on a lubricant/rust preventer and overall protectant. I was recommended to buy this when I replaced my pruning blade and it is AMAZING. I actually saw it REMOVE rust. It’s called Fluid Film and the applications are wide and varied! Think anywhere you’d maybe hear people tell you to use WD-40, use this instead. It works!
Im so sick right now..but u made me want to go outside tomorrow n start pruning things 👍😊
Thanks for this great information. I didn't even realize I should do this to a dogwood that we run into while mowing.
Never fail to excite me over education! Very informative. Thank again.
So helpful, thank you!
Definitely a job to add to my January jobs! Thanks, Laura :)
very helpful and encouraging! Thank you, Laura!
Great advice, thanks!
Wow! I have definitely neglected my pruning chores! Very informative video.
This is defiantly helpful. Thank you. I received my garden trash can like yours, can't wait to use it.
Excellent video! Encouraged me to trim more of my trees and that I've been pretty much doing it right! Thanks!
You've just motivated me to trim my Japanese tree (zone 5). Thanks!
This was so helpful and now I feel I can do it myself! 🤩
VERY informative! Thanks Laura, I’ve always wondered how to prune. 👍🏻
Thanks for this...just trimmed my apple tree after too long...trimmed like you said so thx...will keep on it next yr and not lag
Love doing garden work in the winter :)
Good information my husband is getting ready to go out and prune some trees that had snow damage this past week.
That was VERY helpful! Thanks!
Such a satisfying video to watch!
Hello Laura. I truly enjoy watching your videos. They are all are so informative, encouraging, and approachable. I know you aren't interested in a full-fledged T.V. show, but would you consider doing a gardening segment? Such as on a morning news program, or on a home and lifestyle show? If you do, keep us posted. I'm sure we would all love to tune in, in support. 😀
Then I'd have to subscribe to cable again to watch her. RUclips killed television for me. Let it stay dead. :)
I just started tackling my overgrown plum thicket last week. I worked on it a little last winter - keeping to the 25% rule - I will do a little this winter, and a little more next winter. Hopefully shape it up to be appealing again. It was your previous fruit pruning videos you had done at your parents which inspire me to start mine. Thanks for the videos! ***I would also like to know how you keep your tools so sharp as well. I remember you doing a video about keeping your tools clean, but can't remember if you sharpened them as well.
Looks great!
I learn so much from you. Thank you for all your videos.
Great video . I never thought to prune in winter when the weather is fair .. I’m doing it all in spring and be overwhelming ..👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This video was very helpful Laura!
Pruning is so intimidating to me. I never remember if my fruit grows on old or new wood etc. Your tips were helpful. Thanks
I really liked this video. It was extremely helpful. Please share more Winter maintenance type videos. It helps me stay motivated to be in the garden year round and gives me direction on what I should be doing. I appreciate your insight.
So helpful! Thank you-
It really is a transformation! So much better. 😊
Hi Laura and Aaron! Happy New Year! This was a very interesting video on pruning trees, even though I don't have any, I'm sure it will inspire and help others. Thank you for sharing!
Great instruction! Thank you ♥
Helped me a lot. Thank you.
Love your straight hair! Excited to tackle our dogwood in the backyard :)
Great video and didn’t really know anything about pruning trees until this video. Thanks!!
Very helpful - thank you!
They both look great in the after. One thing to consider is that if you wait until the buds are swollen, then you can use the prunings inside in an arrangement and they will flower. I don't know if they would do that now.
This inspires me to get busy on a few of mine. Thanks for the good tips. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
That was a super helpful video. Thank you!
Laura, this was really helpful. Thank you.
Fantastic info Laura!
This was such a helpful video. I have 2 young trees and feel like I can handle them now!
Super interesting, thanks so much!
Looking good!😊💪🌳🌲🌱🌿
Great pruning tips
Thanks Laura! I believe I can do this! :)))
Great video! I don't have any garden trees to prune, but some bonsais on a balcony and with deciduous trees there are (maybe) some good pruning tips along with Yours for garden trees too: prune the branches so they will divide from one to two- two to four and so on; with directional pruning (prune above a new bud) a branch will grow to wanted direction and thus making the branches a bit thicker, it will also encourage back budding if you want any. But all this depends on how you wan't your tree to be. If I had a garden, I'd like my fruit trees in a smaller scale, not great big and high ones.
Happy new year!
Cheers from Finland!
This is great. I’ve got a few smaller trees I need to prune and a couple of crepe myrtles I need to start training. I wasn’t sure how to go about it. Thank you. And on another note, your hair looks really good in this video, 😊
We bought the gloves you wear and yes, they rock but my fingers are so long I need to reorder in a larger size. Thanks for the recommendation. That's the kind of things that keep me coming back.
i would love for you to show us more of this!
I would love to tackle pruning now but I think it's too early in zone 7 - Long Island, NY. But you taught me how to prune better than I have. Thanks.
Wonderful lesson
