I’ve been doing this for at least 5 years. It’s fun to do and very easy. Great way to save money by growing your own perennials, annuals and biennials. A couple of tips: 1. One way to keep your milk jugs from blowing away in the wind is to put a stick through the handles. 2. Do not cut the milk jug all the way in half. You want to keep the handles. 3. Don’t forget to label the seeds inside and outside with a tag so that you know what’s in each jug.4. Lastly, you can use different color duct tape - one for perennials, a different color for annuals and a third color for biennials.

I normally cut the bottom of the water jug off, plant the seeds in the garden area I want them, water and use the top part of the jug as a hotcap, then when it's time remove it, no transplanting and you're ready to go.

Glad to see you utilizing this method. I have been using the WSing method for years. Cheryl Mann has several, informative video's on this. What I have found to be consecutive, stronger plants. This is a lot of fun as well. This is an annual tradition for me as it gives me a positive start to the new year. I agree with Cheryl Olson, do place the plant tag on the inside and use duct tape. What I have also found helpful is to draw a map of what is in each container. Many of us that WS have WAY more than 6 jugs going.

Hi Laura! It's great to see you try this method. I came across Winter sowing thru a RUclipsr, Juicing Gardener (Sheryl Mann), while she was in Ohio about four years ago. I learned a lot from her videos and the process really works well. I use a drill to make the needful holes she recommended and duck tape to close the jugs. No, it may not be pretty but it works. It's wonderful to have hardy acclimated plants ahead in growth of most nurseries / big box stores when I'm ready to transplant. Also, the savings to one's wallet is great. Wishing you well with your first exposure to Winter sowing! ☺️💮

@@JuicingGardener You are very welcome Sheryl. I had watched some videos by other RUclips channels and found you. It was great when I learned that you were located in Ohio too. Your approach was practical and very achievable. I will be starting my seed sowing soon this year. I had obtained most of my seeds from Bakers Creek heirloom seeds and they germinate well in the milk jugs. However, I've experienced some concerns with the Sugar Baby watermelon plants. For some reason when I transplant the beautiful plants in the ground, in my garden plot, they just don't seem to take off well as planned. I'm seriously wondering if it's just not getting hot enough for a long enough period in my 5b to 6a growing zone.

FYI I live in the same region as Laura and in August I let some sweet pea pods fall and go to seed. They grow about 5 inches and stay that way all Winter. In Spring they start growing again. I have done this for 3 years now and they make it through feet of snow and negative degree temps. Also they are in direct really high winds. The first year was an accident, but since then I haven't planted any. Also our climate is really dry, so that might make a difference.

Thank you so much for giving winter sowing a try! You will love it and end up sowing more & more seeds this way every year. I do recommend duck tape better than the packing but it rains a lot where I live so the duct tape has a much stronger hold for that. You do not need to pre soak your seeds as the natural freezing and thawing of the soil basically softens the seeds for you. About 75% of my garden is from winter sowing and I have been doing this since 2009. I am so happy that by you doing this you are opening the world of winter sowing up to so many people!

Great minds think alike. I just posted my video on winter sowing this week too. I have been doing it for several years now and love it. It is easier to create a hole then cut around with scissors than cut with a knife, for future reference. :) Also I have done both with seed starting mix and potting soil. Both worked great. As a Hungarian I am very proud you seeded Hungarian poppies! :) In Hungary, we would DIRECT SOW poppy seeds because of its tap root (hard to transplant). We can sow poppies in late autumn or you can even sprinkle it "on snow" in January or at the end of February. I think it's worth seeding a little plot in your vegetable area directly, those seedlings might be stronger. You will get marvellous, mostly lilac-ish flowers! Happy growing!

Laura, don't worry about the tape....you don't need or even want it to be 'sealed'. In fact, avoid making the seal too cumbersome, as you'll want to open the little 'greenhouses' on especially warm days when the air temp inside heats up but it's too early to plant them put. I just use a few tabs of tape, one on each side.

Winter Sowing really does work in the deep south! Mid-January, using 2-3 year old seeds, I planted in 6 milk jugs (using the Winter Sowing method)...stuck them out in my yard and hoped for the best. I'm in southern Louisiana, so I had no idea if the seeds would germinate, or not. This winter, we've had 2 or 3 hard freezes where I live so you can imagine my shock when I checked on the jugs for the first time today. All but two are filled with the prettiest little seedlings I ever saw. One, even is filled with Marigolds from seeds I saved 4 years ago.
I'll wait until around the first of April to make sure we're past the first frost before up-potting these little babies into larger cups.
I'm so tickled that I'll have this grin on my face all day! And, depending on how well they do to bear fruit, etc., you can bet I'll save those jugs for next year!

So glad to see you giving winter sowing a try. Just one piece of tape is sufficient, no need to create a seal around the cut. I had mine sitting in the snow from around Feb on and it worked fabulously--no effort. I grew lupines and foxgloves.
This year I'm going to sow less seeds in each container so that I won't have to fork the seedlings apart in spring like I had to do with the foxgloves last year. They'll be able to stay in their jugs longer and grow. The cold of Canada was no problem since these are perennial in my zone 6A. I had the jugs sitting in the backyard which is an eastern exposure, and protected by the house.

OMGosh Laura!! I did flower seeds in jugs (dianthus, marigold, pansy and calendula). I was not expecting anything really. I am in zone 7. I planted 2/9, and today 2/20 I have calendula sprouts!! WOW!! I am sooooo excited!! Nothing else yet, but I really thought I would just be dumping dirt in April. LOL! I hope you are seeing action too. I am looking forward to updates! I get some much inspiration from seeing all the things you do. Thank you so much. I am gonna try to set up my small vegetable garden on drip this year. Keep it up cause you're the greatest!

I LOVE Winter Sowing and have grown all my veg, fruit, herb seedlings this way for years. So glad you're trying it. I bet you'll be hooked. I find a big bunch of WS jugs a beautiful thing! :)

Very cool thank you! Starting things from seeds this year is so helpful. I finally planned ahead for this and I’m doing something similar except I’m trying with peat pots in containers with clear, plastic lids. Can’t wait to see what happens!

I like this idea, I'm definitely trying this. I'm very interested in seeing how yours turns out and where you plant your flowers in the landscape. It would be nice to have updates on how you had to care for it and instructions on if you direct sowed or put in pots until larger.

Hi Laura! This was another great video! I've never heard of doing this before. My husband bought me a small greenhouse several years ago, but I haven't been very successful starting seeds in it. They get so leggy and the stems are so weak that they usually don't make it after transplanting. I'm excited to try this and will share this with my daughter so we can try it together. She likes to start seeds with me in the greenhouse, but we skipped it last year because of the failure rate. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I tried this quite a number of years ago but didn’t have the best of luck, maybe I did them too soon, I might try again but a little later. Directly in the soil with the jug sounds like a great idea!

I taught a community ed. class on this about 5 years ago. I didn't have practical experience. I just watched a ton of RUclips videos on it to prepare for the class.
As outside temps rise but still too cold to plant, I recommend you open up the lids during the day so the seedlings don't cook in their mini greenhouse. I place duct tape verticle so it's easy to remove.

I tried this last year with some successes and some failures. This worked great for my leeks which I'd never had success with before. I agree with Cheryl Olson about the marker fading in the sun. I will be using craft sticks inside the jugs this year.

Aww Benjamin!!! ❤️🥰 He’s such a sweet baby!! The milk jugs are an excellent idea! I’ve been thinking about doing this with some seeds in the ground and then place the milk jug over the area. That way I don’t have to transplant. There’s so many cool ways to start seeds reusing things that would otherwise be trash.
