The more time I spend reading about and practicing permaculture, the more I am convinced that I am meant to do this. Why? Because of one thing you said in the video..."we can take a glimpse into the future". In my day job, I get paid for doing just that, so why not extend those skills and experience into the garden, community and environment. I think this is the most useful video you’ve ever done, at least for those with fruit trees. I have some newer trees and some older ones. I have a horticulturist friend who has come to help me prune a couple of times. I still feel like I don’t do a great job, but I hope I’m getting better. I spent quite a few years over-pruning my trees. A couple things he showed me, one had to do with training a branch to take over for another(not that I got that real well) and also something about the windward side of the tree needing to be pruned differently. Do you know anything about these parts of the pruning subject? I would love for you to do a series of videos on each type of fruit tree, maybe visit other(maybe neglected?) orchards where there are much older trees so we could get a better idea of how to prune older and neglected trees. Thanks so much, this was very helpful information!

    My local horticulturalist taught me that there is a slight "knucke" at the beginning of every new branch called a cambuim layer. The layer is loaded with cells that are responsible for successful healing of the cut. I like how you used the anvil side of your pruners to avoid getting too close. Nice Felcos btw. I love my #2s so much i feel naked without them

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 Год назад +16

      It’s called the collar. The cambium layer is just inside the bark, that carries the food to the branches.

    • @toddallen7862
      @toddallen7862 Год назад +6

      @@cynthiafisher9907 I stand corrected thank you

    • @pavolhomola77
      @pavolhomola77 Год назад +2

      Beware - actually this practice with the pruners being used the way you describe, is wrong, you should always cut with the anvil heading away from the wood, that you want to preserve. The reason is, that there is always some compression at the anvil side of the pruners, which damages the wood (the collar in this case). You don´t want to damage this, as this hampers the healing of the collar. The thickness of the cutting blade is normally fully sufficient to lead you to the collar line. Moreover, especially with a heading cut, you want to cut beyond the collar, almost flat with the growth direction. This is actually the reason, why the bypass pruners are a better option for fruit tree cutting. Last but not least, you want to cut with the blade heading away from the tree trunk, in the growth direction of the branch, you cut, as this prevents damaging the bark.

    This video is EXACTLY what I've needed to find the last few years. I've been cutting back one of our apple trees to improve its structure but knew I shouldn't do too much at once, even though that has meant leaving some very annoying branches in our faces between kitchen and garage. This year will be my fourth pruning and it's ready for a substantial shaping. The last three seasons the tree has consistently doubled fruit production from year to year. I don't know if they're all still alive, but there were five more apple and one pear tree down on the lower tiers of the yard that I'd also like to recover. The apples from the tree next to the kitchen are absolutely amazing in baked goods. We figured out it most likely is a subvariety of "Canadian Princess" happy in our 9b zone. TY TY TY :)

    Yet another rousing, beautiful, and informational offering…FROM NJ! Here is a pruning story. One Fourth of July I got invited to a very exclusive music concert on a farm in New Hampshire. I walk the tree on the property and noticed the apple trees were a mess. I went back up to the main house, found the proprietors of the farm And ask them if they would mind if I had at their apple orchard with my clippers. Now, I’m a guitar player and I was there with a band and they sort of gave me a funny look but thank me and said she will go ahead I am Baldauf down the hillside, and began to put the apple trees in order, little by slow, over the course of the next three hours, folks came down to check out what I was doing. Little kids, pregnant, mothers, some Rastafarians with some herb. And they were posing questions, and I was showing the techniques. Finally the bandleader came to the top of the hill and said hey, Johnny Appleseed, it’s time to rock ‘n’ roll.
    We had a nice show, and reception was great from the crowd. The next day, our friends, aged grandparents showed up and happened to walk down to the orchard. They came back up the hill and asked for their granddaughter. My goodness said the grandmother, what the heck happened to the apple trees , everyone fell silent and the silence grew into an embarrassment. I stood up for my breakfast and walked over and introduced myself. I did grandmother, your apple trees were about ready to become unruly beyond repair and much to everyone’s relief. She gently touch my elbow and said oh I know, I know. Oh thank you young man. Thank you so much! Do you see my grandfather planted those trees. They mean so much to the family I barely audible but significant sigh of relief spread through the crowd as my friends came over with bacon and eggs, buckwheat pancakes, and a generous pitcher of real maple syrup for “Johnny Appleseed.”
    I love this earth, the home we have. I love the people and I love the memories because nowadays memories are all I have left.

    Lee Reich's Pruning Book is a great book for referencing. A few things he mentioned that were different than yours was that pruning should be done in late Winter so the cuts will heal as soon as growth begins in the spring so the wounds won't dry out. Also something I learned the hard way is that some varieties of certain fruits are tip bearing (apples and pears) and if you prune the ends of the branches you could be pruning off next years fruit. Great summary of work though and you covered quite a bit. Thanks for sharing!

    James I love how you break things down to simple lingo! We really have to tackle our old and way under pruned pear tree! It seems to need an overhaul! I’m a bit intimidated but I think I’m gonna try some of these methods! Thanks, Kristy in Missouri zone 6b 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. Oh and our pear tree also has fire blight 😳

    I made a mistake not pruning a citrus tree when young and it grew into a bushy tree got fruit after 15 yrs grown from a pit.
    Finally got good fruit two years in a row but the third it started to yellow and no fruit even though I watered and fertilized it. I realized that pruning had to be done to let light in. Will have to see if the tree will survive. Thanks for this teaching on apples,pears and peaches which I will apply from now on on my fruit trees here in fl.

    Good overview, thank you!
    I'd comment a bit on cutting: to avoid unnecessary damage to bark, it is a good idea to position secateurs always so that the cutting blade is towards remaining part of the wood. My own experience with apple trees tells that if you prune, the remaining part should be as short as possible to heal quickly. However the cutting should be done in such position, where diameter of the wound wouldn't be _much_ larger than the diameter of branch you're cutting off - if you cut very/too close to the remaining larger branch, there will be a large oval wound that will heal a lot longer if at all. Larger cuts could be covered by a pruning vax or some similar substances that have growth hormones simulating bark growth. Cleaning up secateurs before moving from one tree to another is very important if one cuts out wood with some illnesses...

    Careful bending branches in the cold, they can snap. Best time to bend branches for training is when the sap is flowing. It also won’t harden up at the new angle until there is a couple months of new growth. You also only want to bend a small percentage at a time, if you bend them too far they will also snap.
