Excellent, clear instruction. I teach MS Word and Excel all day; but in ProTools, I need the kind of clear teaching I try to give the people I help. You're doing it; thanks, brother. And keep putting out the message of your sample tunes.
Has Pro Tools improved this at all? In Ableton you just drag the beat into your session and it figures it out pretty instantly. Very rarely gets it wrong.
@GuitarManMilaneus It might have to do with whether your track is tick or sample based. Whether it stretches to follow the tempo changes you've made or not. You don't want it to stretch. Just the tempo to change.
I am trying to do this for a Dream Theater Song, and the time signature changes are difficult. How can I get around this problem? Would it be possible to make a video about it?
If I may chime in, yes you can. You need a stopwatch to do it. Start the stopwatch on a beat, Stop the watch on the 25th beat. Whatever the stopwatch counted to, multiply that by 41.81 and that is your beats per minute.
OMG, you explain it so easily and make it so understandable its very easy to follow! Thanks a lot you've just saved me a lot of time wasting!! You're the best graham, Cheers
I need to align a multitrack drum project. It was not recorded with a click or metronome. It was live. I want to align the drums at the recorded temp and then speed it up when session is done. Can you help?
excellent and thank you. Could you show me (if it exists) a way to slow down the tempo of an imported Track. For example I have a piano track that I wish to slow down. Thanks in advance - Aindre
general question: means that, that PT stretches all fine human timedifferences to exactly 70 bpm oft the whole songlenght or is the beatdetection-feature is able to search realted transients of quarter notes (like the piano accompaiment) in order to keep that in each bar different microtiming when musicans are not recording to a click? Would whish to had that feature in Reaper for a long time, hahaha)
If the measures are off by about 1bpm in the middle of the song, how can everything line up to 70bpm so perfectly? Whenever I get tracks not played to a click track, the tempo is all over the place, and there's no way to set a tempo for the whole song.
I like to tap tempo on my kaossilator or KP3 to find tempo.... A lot of vsts have this option too, and you can midi map a controller key/button to it for a tactile input. This is a wonderful alternative. I'm sure I'll be using to double check my guesstimations.
Nice video and song what version of protools is this I have 10hd on a PC will this procedure still work ? trying to get a tempo so I can add some midi over dubs to an audio recording make the click matchthe audio I'm a novice lol
Make sure you group the drum tracks together when you make the beat detective slices so everything gets chopped up but only analyze the kick and snare. If your missing what I'm saying you need to play with PT a lot more before going down this road.
Great Tutorial. Thank you.But what if the audio track was played NOT to a click.Obviously the pro tools click would drift in and out from time to time. I know in cubase you have the option to cut the audio up into M point which can than be quantised to the precise click. Is there a way to quantise the live unregulated tempo of a audio track to a precise click .
@antoni7515: If you're using a laptop (which I am assuming) you could simply buy an USB number keypad instead of getting a whole new, full-size USB keyboard.
Pro Tools has Tap Tempo. Undo Conductor Mode, click on the tempo in the transport and tap the letter T to find it. Problem comes when 10 measures down the road the drummer moves tempos and its off again. Best way is to find average, use beat Detective and slice up the drums to the grid.
OK great but if the song you are trying to determine the tempo of was not recorded with a click track, then what do you do. (since the timing won't be consistent). I know you can get an approximation, but anything programmed with MIDI will get off time.
It actually is the music standard for recording. I haven't seen any pro studio that doesn't have that software. I use both Sonar and Pro Tools on my PC
@recordingrevolution Oh rite, thats why then as i dont have that type of keyboard but will be purchasing the editor keys keyboard so that shold solve all of those shortcut problems anyway. thanks a lot graham.
trying to switch from fl studios to protools for recording and man this program years late with features that make simple things like finding bpm easy.
You need to find the average tempo of the track using idenfify beat function, and use beat detective to chop the drums up into slices so you can lock it to that tempo. Then you can modify tempos and have the drums stay on beat. Get ready to do a lot of editing. Best way is to always record drums to a click.
You call this really easy. I would'nt. Why isn't there seperate audio and midi track tempo's that can be adjusted individually to match each other and play in sinc ? That would make more sense. Or even automatic tempo sync that when you drag a wav or mp3 into an audio track the midi track adjusts itself to that tempo to match. Then you could speed up or slow down both tracks together to how fast you want the track as a whole.
Why doesn't Logic Pro X have this function? I need to get a tempo to 4 decimal places and the rubbish BPM Counter in Logic only goes to 1. Very frustrating. Good vid btw
Click on the icon where you select on either viewing the track info such as bars and tempo "Beats & Project" or "Beats & Time" and select the bottom option named "Custom"
what if there are many songs of different time signatures & different tempos in one project, what should be done in such a scenario ,what shud be done so that each song retains its click and i dont have to change the tempo of entire project for each song .
+gaurav sharma Hey Guarav, if you are switching time signatures and tempos in Pro Tools, its not too hard. See the top bar where it says Tempo and Meter (upper left, in grey, above the track names)? Click the + button to add a tempo marker or meter marker. This will effectively switch your tempo, or meter. The click will follow as well. Hope this helped!
When I change the temp of the track it stretches and shrinks the track. I don’t want to shrink or stretch the track I just want to change the click track to match the track. I can’t figure it out
Lool.!! Thats too much waste of time.!! Just go to your metronome, highlight the number in BPM,start the song...& start clicking T T T T T...with your finger with the song!! Baaam 70 BPM.!!
I agree 100% buuuuuttttttt not everybody has the music inside. I Think both methods should be mentioned as this does a decent job. Also to note that tap tempo only works with Conductor OFF. Also You may have to cut the clip and move it so a beat lines up because not every song starts and ends on a 1. Ex: You Wanna record to an instrumental you ripped from the internet. The song start was probably edited in seconds so the start of the song is NOT beat 1 of the song. sooooo go to a section with clearer beats and use tab to transient to cut a 1 beat and move to a 1 on the grid then reopen the clip and change bpm. Takes less than 30 seconds if done correctly.
This is a song that I did without doing all of that but I know if I would of learned that my songs would've been a lot better but I have a lot of learning to do soundcloud.com/ghetto-bandit/make-love
In the editor window, pick the track that has your beat on it. In the track settings you can set your tracks to sample based rather than tick based. this way when you change your tempo the beat wont change speed. Then all you do is play your metronome, and change the tempo until it matches the beat. Hope this helps. Take care
Key Word "About Where The Down Beat Is" ...pro tools manufacturers are like apple...they will make all these amazing features...but miss the common sense shit like the "maximize feature of a browser". Its sad pro tools hasn't added this feature that is needed so much in god knows how many year they been operating. Pro tools, please hire regular people sometimes instead of only geniuses who miss common sense shit other wise you will miss the common sense shit for years to come
I've been searching allover trying to find a simple, clear way to do this and haven't found it until now. Thanks!
Excellent, clear instruction. I teach MS Word and Excel all day; but in ProTools, I need the kind of clear teaching I try to give the people I help. You're doing it; thanks, brother. And keep putting out the message of your sample tunes.
Wow. Eight years old and this looks exactly the same as my version. And still super useful. Thanks for all the incredible help!!

How do I find this song. I really like it. Is there a link to it somewhere that I could use to listen to it? Thank you.
@antoni7515 You have to use the 1 on the right side of a full keyboard (the numeric keyboard), not the 1 above the letters.
how do you get the tempo to play when recording? i cant seam to get it to
thank you! you saved me for my exam today ^^
I am trying to do this for a Dream Theater Song, and the time signature changes are difficult. How can I get around this problem? Would it be possible to make a video about it?
Ive seen 3 videos from you in a row... So so helpful and well explained. Thanks a lot!!!

Thanks for this Grahms. Now i learned how to find the tempo using pro tools
Very well done. Just learning "Slow Tools" and this helped me a lot! Thanks--

great video Graham! But why not tap-tempo?
Great video, but I'm able to find the tempo of the song but every time I change it on the top meter it slows or speeds up the music?
me too!!! did you figure it out???
This is GREAT! Thank you for this video. So many hidden-in-plain-site tricks in Pro Tools. Thanks again.
@antoni7515: If you're using a laptop (which I am assuming) you could simply buy an USB number keypad instead of getting a whole new, full-size USB keyboard.

Brandon Doherty you wouldnt because an exact tempo doesnt exists. look into ways to stretch the audio to a click track other wise you cant.
ok thanks
Its probably a dumb question but, I can't seem to bring up the transport bar using the short cut of cmd+1 or ctrl+1, any ideas why? Thanks
great tutorial thanks for posting
sick! I used to import stuff into Traktor before I knew about this feature! thank you!
great vid helps a lot... question: what if the audio did start to drift off of the click?
Thanks for doing this. This was immensely helpful!
It actually is the music standard for recording. I haven't seen any pro studio that doesn't have that software. I use both Sonar and Pro Tools on my PC
Thanks tons! Really made my job easier
@recordingrevolution Oh rite, thats why then as i dont have that type of keyboard but will be purchasing the editor keys keyboard so that shold solve all of those shortcut problems anyway. thanks a lot graham.
Would it be more accurate to select a larger number of bars?
Thanks very much for this. Just helped me a lot.
Thank you for making this video helped me so much. You are the man.

Can I get the MP3 for this song...I love it!
YOUR REALLY VERY GOOD!!! YOUR REALLY VERY CLEAR, I HAVE A LOT OF DOUBTS BEFORE THIS VIDEO THANKS A LOT!
Super video. Learned a ton!
What's the title of the song? Who's singing?
You sir deserve 1m subs! Thank you

I love how the sample is called OGG 70BPM :DDDD Thanks for the video anyway man!
Thank you mate, you just made my day!

thanks for your response :)
Great, keep me posted and let me know how it goes!
Thanks Graham!
is it possible to find the tempo of an acapella ?
Helped me a bunch!!!
Dude... I know how to do that in Samplitude I've been wanting to know how to do it in protools thank bro.
I put command or cntrl 1 and doenst work
When I change the temp of the track it stretches and shrinks the track. I don’t want to shrink or stretch the track I just want to change the click track to match the track. I can’t figure it out
me too!!!! have you figured it out???
@NIP28 yo did you or him figure it out
thankyou sooo much!!!
Great tip thanks for share it
Every time I do this, it slows the song down. I'm simply trying to match the grid.
yea me too!!!! have u figured it out????
@@NIP28 take the conductor track off after you find the tempo but before you switch the session tempo from 120
this may be a dumb question, but can a human find out what a tempo is?
It has to be the 1 on the number keypad to the right of your keyboard.
Thank you so much.
I prefer to tab to transient to find a more precise downbeat.
Lool.!! Thats too much waste of time.!!
Just go to your metronome, highlight the number in BPM,start the song...& start clicking T T T T T...with your finger with the song!!
Baaam 70 BPM.!!

So what do you do when the tempo is not a round number with that technique? Let's say that the tempo is 89.63bpm
@@Wasaia round up
This doesnt work for me, gives me a bpm that doesnt fit lol
Need answers
Thanks Graham.
What song is this?
His demo sounds pretty good lol.. Just need to b mastered and some overall rverb lol
IS THIS PROTOOLS SE OR PROTOOLS CAUSE IF SO WILL,PROTOOLS HELP ME WITH PROTOOLS SE ?....LIKE ARE THEY THE SAME
Hi how do I get two protools to sync ?
+Paulo Dias Hey Paolo, what are you trying to get ProTools to sync to?
Fantastic. Thank you!
you are the shit graham! I have found your channel really helpful
thanks mate! Great work!!!
no tap bpm feature? :(
Helpful!
(not using protools or a program) by ear
Ich hab dieses Video geguckt Herr Rittel, krieg ich jetzt ne 1?
Awesome! Thanks
i just use virtual dj to find the tempo. load on a turntable and it gives bpm in seconds and then dial it in pro tools. works every time.
How many decimal places does it work out tempo to?
same a pro tools
Cool, I'll check that out then
tap tempo is not accurate and can't hear decimal points
Can't you just use an app with tap temp? i did that the first time he played it, and i got 70bpm
Helpy Helperson . thanx
awsome.. thanks for this mate
THANKS!!
That's too hard for me is it any of the way that you can do this without doing all of that?
+manmann lee yes, you can use tap tempo to tap along to the beat of a song and the tempo will automatically match to the beat that you play.
+Chris Faze I tried doing that but it never works out the way I wanted to it always come out long this seems like I will never get that right
This is a song that I did without doing all of that but I know if I would of learned that my songs would've been a lot better but I have a lot of learning to do soundcloud.com/ghetto-bandit/make-love
In the editor window, pick the track that has your beat on it. +manmann lee Is this song a parody. Fuckin' hilarious m8.
Thanks the vid was helpful.
Pro Tools is not the music industry standard - it is the film industry standard, and we don't generally need bpms when we are cutting sound fx ;)
