In this episode of our Inspiring Ideas @ Trinity webinar series, IMRO award winning music presenter Ruth Smith meets with world-renowned composers and Trinity graduates Éimear Noone and Peter Whelan to discuss their impressive careers, musical influences and inspirations, and what they’ve got lined up next. Over the course of the chat, they will touch on a wide range of topics, including accessibility in the arts, breaking musical boundaries and more, as well as sharing some great stories about their experiences as conductors and composers.
Eímear Noone was the first woman to conduct the Oscars, leading the orchestra at the 2020 ceremony and was also the first woman to conduct at Ireland’s National Concert Hall in Dublin. She is perhaps best known for her award-winning work on video game music, including scores for World of Warcraft and The Legend of Zelda. Eímear has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Danish National Symphony; a highlight of her career includes performing in Beijing’s Olympic Stadium to an audience of 80,000.
Peter Whelan has enjoyed a remarkable career to date, leading orchestras across Europe and North America while also serving as artistic director of the Irish Baroque Orchestra. This year, Peter was awarded an Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for conducting Vivaldi's Bajazet at the Royal Opera House (London) and will make his conducting debut at the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and San Francisco Opera. He has been lauded as one of the most exciting and versatile exponents of historical performance of his generation, particularly for his work on 18th-century Irish music.
