Thanks for the update. After watching your "best" comparison a couple of years ago, I bought the original True Tow. After 30k+ miles, back and forth across America, I recommend it to any who ask. I think the Gen 2 will perform the same, but after talking with Weigh Safe, I find no reason to update the original. I hoped the head and shank would drop some weight, but there's not much difference. I do prefer the original shank because I can easily remove the head and stow it with the bars during extended stays, leaving the shank in place. Good work, I think you do really accurate "real world" reviews.
I have a Gen 1 and love it. It has keyed pins for ball height adjustment. When I load my truck heavy (firewood & coolers) and get more squat, I move the ball up the shank one notch. The only complaint I have on the Gen 1 is I have to adjust the weight distribution screw every time I use it. Oh, and it is heavy! I have to separate the shank from the hitch to manage the weight. I’m an old guy (70+), been towing for decades, and have used numerous hitches. The WeighSafe is by far the best hitch I’ve ever used. As a side bar, the Blue Ox SwayPro was the worst I’ve ever used.
Knowing your actual hitch weight (tongue weight) is so important to safe towing. Every Weight Distribution/Sway Control hitch system should be like this.
I traded in my Tundra for a 2024 Silverado HD and the first thing I did was hook up to my camper to test the tailgate with my Weigh Safe middleweight. Tailgate clears no problem so I’m very happy.
can u used the heavy weight on a light weight setup. i have a 22 foot trailer on a ford f150 need the tailgate to open. trailer is 5000 lb dry and 500 lb tong . thank you
Yes you can. It’s all about the distributed tongue weight with these hitches. That number will be the same regardless of which hitch you use (heavyweight or middleweight). I hope this helps!
Love your channel and the knowledge you share with us. We just purchased a 2016 ram 2500 6.4 hemi, rear air suspension and 4.10gears from the original owner with 44796 miles. Truck is the crew cab long bed with the ram gooseneck package. We are now taking our time and shopping for travel trailers. All of your information is very valuable. Great job.👍👍
Dealer installed a blue ox on my East to West 312BH. First trip on the interstate I was researching new set ups. That’s what brought me to your review videos. Proud to say I own the medium weight 12,500ilb version and I will never go back to anything else. Tows like a dream and my stress level is gone.
Two features I prefer with the original is that it can be easily removed from the receiver bracket and looks like it's easier to step over. They are still selling the original at 20%😅off. So I'm happier with my decision to get the original.
Love it. Except for one design flaw. With the Heavy Weight 2.0 you can’t use a non weight distribution weigh safe hitch with the draw bar like you can with the 1.0. I love being able to use other weigh safe hitches.
I understand it is a prototype, however being so involved with Grand Design, maybe a suggestion to Grand Design to add the threaded holes for 90 degrees to allow the head to be rotated to the driver side. Driver side because if a person is by himself, the switches would be easier to get to.
I recently bought a new design midweight hitch. On my first tow I towed my 10,000 lb trailer 2600 miles. After towing for a couple of days I felt the wind started to move my trailer on the windy roads. I checked my weight to discover the weight had dropped to 2150 lbs from the original setting of 2500 lbs. I was surprised see that the weight had changed but reset it. The naxt day it had dropped again and reset it. This happened 4 times each time I had to tighten the bolt. Yes I did ensure that the lock bolt was very tight. Do you have any idea why this would happen? Do I just keep tightening the set bolt? Seems stange to me that this has to be readjusted almost daily!
Hmm, I know the scale will read differently based on angles, pitch, ect. You shouldn’t have to be adjusting often at all really. I’d reach out to Weigh Safe.
What is your opinion on backing up with the bars still attached? I have heard that under 60 degrees of turn angle is ok but I'm skeptical of the info. What is your real world experience?
We are going back and forth on a fifth wheel vs travel trailer for our next trailer. Do you have a video going over why you've only done travel trailers? We are looking at a travel trailer that is about 33.5ft long and I want to make sure the Weigh Safe hitch will keep it straight going down the interstate.
Just curious if you foresee any backing or tight maneuvering with the new hitch. Also I have a similar F250 7.3 gas, Have you modified rear suspension any all for towing? Thanks!!!
No suspension mods. Weigh Safe suggestions unhooking if you’re really jackknifing it. Honestly that is a good idea with any of these hitches. That said I back into my driveway no problem.
Have you ever tested the Hensley Arrow hitch and if so how does the Weigh Safe handle in high winds, big trucks passing, Ect compared to the Hensley or Pro Pride
Bought the middleweight last summer for a new trailer. I’ve really been impressed with it so far. It’s done great in some high winds, 30’ trailer with an F-150, and really tows smoothly. I did order the lower rated bars for mine without realizing they had a tongue weight rating. I think weigh-safe has done a better job of making it more clear since of ordering your bars based on tongue weight not just total trailer weight. I like how you showed the difference in bar size. I have been towing with the smallest bars almost maxed out with no issues but may order the bigger bars just to be safe. One thing I learned after talking with customer service is the two bolts on the underside of the hitch are your sway control the more you torque them down the more sway control you have. I check them before every trip. I’m glad to see they are continuing to improve the design and I’m looking forward to your full review!!!
In the part with the ball longer? Or did they just move the hole on the shank to allow for tailgate clearance? I have the middle weight and will pay for a new shank, so I can open my tailgate.
They offered but I already had my old ones. Give them a call and they’ll make it right. They did tell me the heavyweight was tested with the middleweight brackets as well and they had no issues but I’d still email or call and get the heavy ones
Thanks for the video. I tow an Imagine XLS 23LDE with a gross weight of just under 7,000LBS and it 28.5 ft long. I have been towing using the Anderson Hitch and my tow vehicle is a Ram2500. I like the looks of the heavyweight, but I think it will be overkill for my RV. Do you think the Middle Weight is better than the Anderson with my tow vehicle/RV configuration?
Thank you for all of your thorough hitch reviews! I currently have an Equal-i-zer but would like to upgrade to a Weightsafe to improve sway performance on my shorter wheelbase LX570 towing a 2400BH. Would you suggest the heavy weight over the middle weight if the additional weight carrying capacity is not needed, or is the Middleweight the best option? I don't mind dealing with the extra bulk/weight of the Heavyweight if there is justified benefit over the Middleweight.
I have a question on Bar weight. You have the largest bars on a relatively smaller trailer. My understanding was you are supposed get bars close to your weight range. I didn't think it was recommended by the manufactures to just use the heaviest spring bars on any trailer? Reason I ask is because the Middle weights heavier bars at 12,500 are rated above my trailers GVWR of 11,346. The lightest bars for the heavy are rated 18,500. I get stronger is better when it comes to lots of things. But these act basically like springs. If they are to stiff wouldn't it negatively effect how the system works.
With the Weigh Safe you’ll be dialing in your “distributed tongue weight” which is the same regardless of which unit you’re using. The middleweight exists to save weight and money for the end user.
@@WanderingWeekends I appreciate the reply. I actually talked to Weigh safe after I posted that question. That's basically what they said with out saying it. They recommended the heavy for me. It's just strange to me how close in rating the bars are. But how large a gap there is between the two hitches. If bar weight doesn't really matter. Why even have two bar weights so close together for each hitch? You would almost think they would just have the middle weight with up to 12,500 and the heavy up to 22,500. I did notice their site has a ton of information on picking drop length and setup. But zero on picking bar weight.
I have forgotten what its like to put the tail gate down when towing. You get used to grabbing it and carefully letting it drop and either reaching in to get whatever it was you wanted/needed or gently resting it on the lift.
I tow hundreds of different trailers every year and never once had any interference with my tailgate opening on any of 4 different vehicles due to the hitch.
You're the best!! What's your thoughts on hitch set up for a Brinkley 295 (the one you saw in Tampa)? Think the middle weight is enough hitch? Heavy Weight seems over kill. Hoping I don't miss my ProPride.
Thanks for good info! So when I do my payload safety/weight calculations do you use the distributed weight to reduce the payload or stick with just the weight of the hitch and trailer weight listed by the manufacturer (or estimate of 15% of fully loaded trailer)? Thx!
You're at least a third or fourth RUclipsr that said the same thing about 63 mph being the sweet spot. I also tow a Grand dlDesign. An Imagine 2450RL and it's the same for me. 63 mph is fine but if I hit 64 mph there is noticeably more sway. Specifically "truck suck". I won't say which WDH I'm using since you've already reviewed it and it came out pretty much on the bottom. It was what the dealer recommended when I bought the trailer. They offered only two WDHs. One that required you to get out and remove the sway bars before backing up, and one that didn't. I took the one that didn't.
Is it easy to get a new hitch bar from WeighSafe if you upgrade trucks? 2" to 2.5"? I would like to buy one but I am considering moving from an F150 to a SuperDuty next year.
Ordered mine and it shipped out yesterday, should have it by 4/2...really looking forward to getting it installed. That said, I missed out using your discount code, oh well.
1. Great that the tailgate can still open. Love that feature on the OG. 2. Need to see more details on setting it up. I use the OG to haul RV trailers all around the country so with the OG i have to reset my trailer everytime, which is a pain but worth the safety. 3. I have the 23 Superduty as well, can you tell me if you have the Brigestone Dueller AT tires and your thoughts on them towing? I have them on mine and on certain raods there is groove wander when im towing and it drives me nuts. Curious your experience with what tires you have since that plays a HUGE part in towing.
@WanderingWeekends I have the same question. My trailer is 25' and GVWR of 7500lbs. My truck is a 2013 GMC sierra 2500hd denali diesel. (Crew cab, 4x4, 6'6" bed)
It’s just hard for me to suggest anything over a Weigh Safe. That would be my first choice. An Andersen might really work well here too since you’re in a 2500. TR3 is good. Equalizer as well. Check marketplace for some used stuff. If any of those 4 pop up with adequate capacity go for it.
Purchased our first RV (2023 315RLTS). Dealer wanted to install (sell) me a Blue Ox. Because I watched your review video, I told them no thanks and ordered the Weigh-Safe middle weight hitch. Thanks
I have the same 315 and am now thinking about getting the heavy-weight hitch because the expected washer/dryer added tongue weight. I'm at 1,200 lbs of tongue weight now with equalizer 1400#. It's about to be maxed with washer/dryer.
@@timdennis5853 what is the gross weight of your trailer? The stated gross weight of these trailers is around 11,400 . Tongue weight should only be 10% of the gross. I would recommended you shift some weight around before buying another hitch as the middle weight hitch is more than enough. Just my thoughts.
The 315 has a heavy front. I don’t have much in the front storage or under the bed. Middleweight is fine if you don’t have the bedroom AC or washer and dryer in the closet.
@@WanderingWeekends Absolutely one of the big features that sold me on the previous model on research. Pre-ordered gen 2 just assuming they would continue that. That red bud is in bloom in the back round!! You are the official hitch review champion of RUclips. So appreciate these videos. I am still rolling around with a Curt Trutrack for my 2021, Grand Design 2500 RL. I purchased my camper used and this is the system I got from the original owners. I’m just debating on spending the extra money not knowing if I will get a better pull with the weighs safe. Thanks again for all of your videos with these trailer hitches.
In my experience you’ll get a better pull with the Weigh Safe. The Curt was good. The Weigh Safes are great. Of course I can only speak to my experience.

The heavy is a great deal larger. It allows for just enough clearance where the smaller middleweight did not.

Same!

I think these videos will educate newer RVs, so they don’t have to waste money on buying multiple weight distribution systems and just get the right one that perfect for their application.
Thank you for the great information and advice.
Named my truck CamelTow!
