  • Ryan and Eunice spent years in a tiny condo saving for their dream house in the suburbs. The home inspector was very reassuring and they maxed out their mortgage to buy. Now they’ve got more house than furniture, and a lot more problems than they ever expected. Mike will do a Holmes Inspection, and he, Damon and the crew will Make it Right.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me. Here in the UK you have a Survey done by a qualified and regulated surveyor. If he is negligent you claim against his professional insurance to get it fixed. If there are enough complaints or they are serious enough the professional body takes disciplinary action. From fines through retraining to being struck off! Yet there appears to be no sanctions in Canada and no insurance.
    Or am I missing something?
    Do enjoy these shows though.

No, the original commentor is correct, even in the U.S. If the inspector has liability insurance - and most of them have it as a business requirement - you file the complaint to the insurance company or sue them not the inspector.

In general, home inspectors work for the realtor, not the buyer. The realtor doesn't get paid until/unless the home sale closes. Realtors do not want the home inspector to find anything that will delay or derail the sale closing. Don't let the realtor chose your home inspector. Before you even start shopping for a home, find an inspector with a good reputation, and make sure the inspector knows that they will be working for YOU, and you will hold them responsible for missing significant problems. And, do not EVER close if you are told that problems will be fixed after closing. It's a lie! Once the seller and realtors have their money, you are on your own.

I am from Phoenix, Arizona and I am really impressed with the work Mike and his crew do everyday. I do have a correct garage, I had a 8" x8" concrete curb poured to support the new 2 x 4 framed walls. The concrete had rebar sunk into the existing slab before pouring the concrete, then anchor bolts every 32 inches to hold the wall in place. Per code here in Phoenix the garage must have two layers of drywall on the ceiling. The roof was part of the house and all I did was wall in the 25 x 19' foot carport. I made sure a receptacle is in place for the new door opener. The walls were insulated except where I intentionally placed 8 vents, 4 up and 4 down to allow air movement within the garage. The laundry room sits in front of the garage so it to have drywall placed over the T-111 siding. I had to move the wall light forward for the 1/2 in ch drywall thickness. The slab slopes in two directions to the side and front to drain water away from the house. The house is built with cinder block which was typical in 1967 when it was built. Every receptacle and switch were replaced along with the breakers in the panel. The new siding for the garage was placed 1/2 in lower than the framing to keep it dry, then I chalked the joint where the siding meets the concrete footing. I also learned you do the same thing I did for my kitchen Cupboards, I placed 1/2" plywood on the walls so I would hit all of the studs, then mounted the cabinets with screws into the plywood.

Honestly as much as I like this series, it's also rather depressing. Years of house flippers have really destroyed most homes these days and they always do just enough to hide it. Add to that most home inspectors have zero ability or intent to find these flaws. There is no license or standard for home inspectors it seems. Any idiot off the street can claim to be one.
Add to that those that are in bed with the realtor to begin with and just sign off on stuff to get their cut of the sale.

My home buyers report in the UK said I had a gas boiler despite " oil boiler" being written on the front.
I assumed I was the ignorant one and it must have been converted.
A long time later when I had moved in I discovered it was in fact an oil boiler I rang the inspector who was totally unworried.
Luckily I wanted the home anyway and had the boiler changed.
I put no faith in posh looking reports, legally they exclude all liability so mistakes they make cost me not them.
Even if you had a full structural survey costing hundreds of pounds there are good and bad chartered surveyors, try suing for mistakes and good money follows bad.
It is very difficult to find honest competent people to do a survey worth the paper it's written on and backed by the assurance that you will be compensated for any expensive mistakes they make in the inspection and report.
Housebuyers need advice on so many legal, financial and building issues on buying homes property ( don't trust solicitors without understanding every word in the documents they work on for you)
We need a home buyers course of study, with a qualification run by honest experts who will at least pass on the right questions to ask and a few ways to protect our biggest lifetime investment and health.
After school would be a good time to find out how to choose and pay for a home rent or buy a home should be fit to live in.

Are the home inspectors in Canada not regulated? The home inspector works for the buyer and if there are issues as a buyer you go back to the seller to have them fixed or no sale.seems like any Joe schmoe can become a home inspector in Canada and just take people's money that is foul as hell, yall need some regulation for that industry there or at least be able to sue the inspector over false/bad inspection

Inspectors are the BIGGEST joke in the industry, most are biased if they are employed by the realtors...check okay to SELL SELL SELL. Laws need to be passed to hold people accountable INCLUDING the sellers to pay for repairs up to 6 months or a year after the sale and levy HUGE fines for not disclosing actual hidden issues not reported and using the "we didnt know" is IGNORANT and not an excuse to get out of it

This couple should not own a home. The vacuum is so dirty that it sets off the smoke detectors?
Maybe they shouldn’t be parents either…

When working with mould, a mask really should be worn. Usually never seen on HomefulTV. They just breathe it in.😑

Based on what we saw here, I blame the home owner for at least half of the problems. The house is not clean at all. It is cluttered and grimy and they seem to be just occupying the house and not taking care of it. I would bet that they have rented for so long that they have no idea how to own a home.

yes, my thoughts too. The central vac's main problem was dust. (very old dirt which could've been removed and cleaned by the owners). Same with the furnace. It needed the (yearly) cleaning, for which you make an appointment with a furnace guy. Not a big deal.

I don't see clutter. The garage and basement has stuff in it, but storage. My aunt is an OCD neat freak, and her house has more than this. I'm guessing you are a minimalist.

I will say that the majority of the issues with the house was the previous owners not maintaining the house.

@@wolfie7051 I'm not a minimalist, but I do see lots of stacks of stuff just thrown in a pile here and there.

It's funny that seemingly all of the contractors in these shows mispronounce "asphalt" ("ashfault") and "masonry" ("masonary"). Similarly, only about 20% of homeowners can pronounce "joists".

Why do you insist on showing someone testing a wire with a death stick? If you test a wire and it warbles then there is current present - or maybe not - but, don’t touch it. If you test a wire and it doesn’t warble then, the only valid assumption you can make is that the death stick is broken so, don’t touch it.
Those things are dangerous and should be banned!

They don't work directly for them. Agent recommends an inspector they know who won't find any issues. Agent gets the sale, inspector gets the work and buyer gets screwed.

I've watched several of these shows that Mike Holmes has done. With one exception I have yet to see him turning in the inspectors and/or contractors for all their faulty and dangerous work. If Mike and his team and other contractors aren't going to turn these people in, then anything that the bad contractors/inspectors do after should be on them. Don't complain and bitch about how horrible these people are if you're not going to do anything about it.

Homeowners pay a small percentage and show covers the rest. Some labor and materials are donated by companies featured in the show.
