Sewage Filled Basement Lead To Major Disasters | Holmes Inspection 206
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 дек 2023
- Dan bought this townhouse because he could picture his buddies all enjoying the finished basement. That dream died when sewage backed up all over the new basement carpet. The home inspector told him to paint and caulk the windows - a better return on his investment than all-new windows. Mike Holmes disagrees. A Holmes Inspection also finds evidence that the roof is suffering from ice dams, the drains are cracked and the bedroom and closet are broiling hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter. Damon and the crew will bring everything up-to-date in this aging townhouse, making it right for young Dan and his friends.

Dude's fiancé left him because of the problems with the house? The house they chose together no less. Sounds like he dodged a bullet.
I agree! You know you have a great partner when they stick with you through thick and thin.
Sometimes staying single is for the best. More money for himself.
true that homie, my new girl comes with me on every live in remodel and thats why im more successful today
shes def for the streets, i hope the guy is living his best life now and moved on to someone worth his time
I agree, poor guy but better to find out now vs after getting married. Then she is entitled half the house... be glad dude, sad but glad she wasn't worth your time :( such pettiness
So the girlfriend left a bit too soon and the patient, smart boyfriend got a pretty much brand new house that is going to be basically maintenance free for years...to entertain and then select his new girlfriend in. Perfect.
👍
Pretty sure he dodged a bullet there
Never trust your realtor. Their job isn't to find you a good home at a good price, it's to sell the most expensive thing they can as fast as they can. Home inspectors they "suggest" are just there to help close the deal, not say anything that might scare you off.
those cats are broken as they aren't getting the mice bad kitty's🤣🤣🤣
@@SaraMorgan-ym6ue They watched too much Garfield growing up.
We were fortunate. Our realtor didn't recommend anyone but instead provided a paper with a list of inspectors to choose from and told us we could hire any certified inspector even if they weren't on the list. Apparently, that is their policy to not steer homebuyers to any particular business or person.
@@leannsmarie There are good people out there, especially those that may work as realtors part time and don't really "need the money". Just like there are honest contractors out there that will do a job right, or tell you they can't upfront. Sadly both are pretty rare these days.
Everything this guy just said is patently false
Sounds like the buddy system. Real estate agent hands work to his buddy the inspector, and the inspector gives glowing reports so his real estate buddy can make the sale and collect his commission.
That's exactly how it works. My daughter got a bad inspector and me and her husband had to replace almost all of the floor joists and floors.
You forgot giving kickbacks to his/her home inspector buddy after the sale.
@@cabman86 baffles me there is nations that wants to call themselfs 'developed' that not has legislation to regulate certification for stuff like this so if someone are skirting the scammer line ,be it out of incompetence or stupidity be it self employed or corpo , the state can grab either by the neck and ensure they not just cover the costs to fix but above all , deny certificates to do such work agen at a minimum :/
Most home inspectors work for the relator. They work as a team to make the sale.
Like Mike said at the beginning, Find a home inspector you can trust and work with, before you even start looking for a home.
I'm glad we didn't have that problem. Our realtor didn't recommend anyone but instead provided a paper with a list of inspectors to choose from and told us we could hire any certified inspector even if they weren't on the list. Apparently, that is their policy to not steer homebuyers to any particular business or person.
If the fiance/girlfriend was unwilling to stick by tje guy when they had an issue like this then the guy dodged a bullet.
He should of turned around and put the house back up on the market after she left
Mike, you have the greatest retention of knowledge that I've ever seen in any human being! Kudos to you for using that ability for so much good!
"Can of worms and I'm in the garden" When the roofers were doing my brother's house I kept thinking Mike Holmes. But it wasn't my house so I did not want to scare the roofers away. But they did a good job from what I could see. The after job seem A-okay but who am I. My brother has a friend that went to school for all of that stuff. I am learning learning learning from his shows just in case I purchase a home.
Damon saying it's the "kiss of death" to say it may be an early day is gospel truth 😂 every time I say that, I work late..
Wow - a $50,000 gift ! Peace of mind - Priceless !
What an amazing connection between all the problems. Another great job.
Mike holmes is a LEGEND!
Not every cat is a mouser. Our Benni was. We didn't know we had mice until he started bringing them out to us. Benni was DEDICATED to mousing. Fiercely.
Lol, we had one of those when I was young. We hung more bells off him than a Salvation Army Christmas Santa and it made no difference. Dead mice on the porch every morning.
I have four cats, and I know two are mousers. We find their presents at the back door.
I at least know my two cats are, and i know when the mice are around as they will stare intently at the bottom of the cabinets where the mice find their way in through the venting. one week they caught 12 mostly young mice, 6 of them in a single night, which was a pain as i had to chase the mouse with them so i could throw the dead ones outside (i dont trust the mice didnt get into anything toxic so i dont want my cats to end up eating them)
lots of tips about the furnace i will be using on my this week
Mike is going to make it right after all that work that he needs to do
What i like/love the most is the respect they all have
The guy's fiancé left him because of the problems. Wow, he really dodged a bullet with that girl. What kind of home inspector spends 3 hours doing an inspection and not notice the major problems that Mike found
The stuff Mike shows is nightmare fuel for any homeowner.
Years ago, I was having problem with sewer line backups into my basement. The local city installed a one way valve that eliminated the problem.
this show has been the best ive been seeing problems in my Friends homes
FINALLY! A new episode!
Right seen them all lol
Bought my house in 2017 and used the engineering company the big realtor company I used recommended. The inspector was focused on all these small issues that I could care less about. When we got to the garage I said doesn’t the drywall look weird to you next to the door it looks like it’s puffy but everything was freshly painted. He said no it looks normal to me. Then he opened the door next to that wall and said the wood is rotted on the bottom of the door that needs to be fixed. Then he climbed on roof which it has a light dusting of snow so he said roof looks good has about 10 years left. I bought the house and 3 months later it’s spring time and there was a mold spore growing out of that wall i asked him about. Tear the drywall out, the insolation was soaked covered in bugs, the framing for the wall was rotted because water from the roof was leaking into the wall which is also why the bottom of the door frame was rotten. My father inlaw comes over ( he hadn’t been in the backyard yet ) when he goes in the backyard to look at the roof he said when the garage addition was done (which was decades prior) they didn’t build the garage roof into the house ( house and garage and L shaped ) so you have water running down the edge of house roof and garage siding which misses the gutter some goes into the garage wall and the majority drains on the porch which is why the block is green and why water is coming in the basement in that exact area.
A partner who can't travel with you through the tough times is not someone you want to travel life with together. You will meet someone even better. Maybe Mike knows someone perfect for you.
One of my favorite shows and I love seeing the smile on peoples faces when they see all the work that has been done
"It didn't happen quick enough" - man, that's harsh, dude lost his fiancée over this?
She's the type of person that will file for a divorce within 5 years of marriage
It was not the house that was the problem “critter 42“ , it was her!… Deranged, delusional, and delirious!… Which makes things disappointing and made him despondent.
Excellent work as always Mike
Love this show thank you for sharing 😎😎
Trusting the realtor. First mistake
First red flag, inspector recommended by my realtor.
I know mike will never say it, but pretty please tell homebuyers to NOT use the inspector that the realtor recommends!
The Canadian Laws have to be amended to protect these house buyers from shabby inspections. They must be more learned and held accountable. Love and Respect to the Holmes Community of Professionals for All they do for these people in need of closure during these stressful times.
Cats that eat only veggies....hahahahahahahaha Serious show but laughter is good just to get through the mess. Lilly did you hear that you are suppose to eat only veggies. hahahahahahahaha
A ton of people on this show say their home inspector was recommended by the real estate agent, that's a bad idea. Your real estate agent has a vested interest in you buying the home, the home inspector has an interest in keeping in good terms with the real estate agent. Even without actively wanting to scheme, this fact will unconsciously teint their decions and opinions. Get your own independant home inspector! Maybe your mortgage lender can recommend someone. Their interest is to make sure the house is worth the money they've lent you to purchase it, and that interest better aligns with your own.
Always chose an inspector on your own. Never from the seller or the realtor. As they just want to make the sale or dump the money pit. Go to your library and get a book on home inspections. So you can ask the right questions and recognize BS when it is given to you. You can save yourself a headache and a lot of money. Either backing away or getting $1000's if not $10's of thousands off the cost of the home... Inspector referrals is a form of kicknack. We live in a world everyone lies for money...
On behalf of all Aussies everywhere, we think it's really cute when people from cold climates say that 29 deg C is "hot" 🤣🤣🤣 But I do love this show and I would love Mike to be inspector if I ever bought a house.
Inspector's with blind fold's are not any good. Plus never ever trust an inspector that your realtor's recomend. If a realtor recomend's an inspector that's usually because the inspector help's the realtor sell the house with all thumb's up report. Always get your own inspector that the realtor dose not know.
Yes yes, he did not need a partner like that. 😊😅
Frost-free hose bibs are great and sll, but homeowners have a responsibility to disconnect EVERYTHING from them once the freeze is imminent.
This was aired about 8-10 years ago
Season 2 aired in 2011.
Ouch I feel his pain. Been there.
You guys rock
Be careful bud that gal will see this video snd will try to worm her way back in now that you have a pretty much a new house. Don’t let her back in. 👍
he bought a home at 25. that is amazing
My realtor supplied a home inspector that did not find a very obvious large gap around a 5" PVC pipe going out the roof. This was made clear to him that I wanted to check the roof for any leaks. After moving in when it rained the inch gap would let water pour in and down my mudroom wall. This pipe had no boot around it. This pipe was the first thing you look at when entering the attic. Just googled do inspectors need a license and this is what came back. "Iowa does not regulate home inspectors, so education is not legally required". Wow!
Next time give Damon a bigger shovel 😂
Fantastic job as usual boys! But I wouldn't want to be any of the other home owners in this complex as you know they all have likely most of the same horrible issues as this guy did.
Missing that dryer vent into the garage and the wiring just punched through the concrete is unconcious, folks should grab a bit of knowledge before house hunting
U can stop out & please take a look at my cold home. Are furnace never shuts off. Yes we have insulation issues Plumbing issues electrical issues. But the inspector says it's all good to go. Ya right. You can't trust no one. We need u Mike.
Realtors are just like car salesman if they recommend an inspection or an appraisal forgot about it get your own appraisal and inspection
well they do make Spring hinges, so why do you need a door closer?
In the present house market, there is no time to have an inspection as there are a half dozen buyers right behind you waving cash and also inspection.
The inspector probably told you the quick cheap fix all so the realtor could sell the house fast and for more money. Once again inspector helping the realtor sell the house fast for more money. This is why you get your own inspector that dose not know the realtor. Save money and get a better house.
We have firms in the UK that are taking out foam insulation because it makes the wood sweat and rot
Never heard of the happening over here in America, perhaps it's a different kind of foam insulation.
no service access for the backflow valve I would think you would put a mini manhole over it so it can be cleaned or a new flapper put in it
If you look closely at the point where the homeowner first looks towards where the repair work took place, you can see that there's a hatch over where the backflow valve is.
Why didn't Mike Holmes turn the bricks right side up that's under the windows. He said he would make it right. What happened.
I thought that too but he did say it was more of a cosmetic thing.
In the past he usually replaced them with a one piece sill
HOA, and Strata council may have stopped that, they want everything to look the same from the outside.
Do you know how expensive that would be for every single window in the house? It's a bit more cosmetic than functional.
if your realtor and your inspector are friends buddies or pals thats a bad combination for you
Right there with you! Bought house in Oct 2020. Didn't think much of it, new /first home buyer. Inspector never went on the roof the following day after in minor rain. Got some stuff to be remedied. Rained pretty good one day! went in the attic to find both gable tops to be leaking all along it!! Did my own fix which has held up so far since said fix. Need a new roof anyways. Tryin to save up for one, at least half.
I used the recommended inspector by my realtor. 400 dollars wasted later I ended up having to fix a few thousand dollars of code violations that I was able to find......so I don't know what the heck he was supposed to do because I have no home repair experience.
The show might not be able to name the inspector but nothing can stop the owner from putting it on the Internet 😊
When Holmes goes into a house and finds all these issues the other inspector missed. Does he charge the client for the repairs or does he do something to where it charges the state/ previous inspector? I don’t know why but I just thought of that and was wondering 😂
50K. Wow, Just wow.
Sure wish i could find a Mike Holmes of South Eastern Pennsylvania..
Do not use the realtors friend or someone he or she knows for inspecting. NO!!!!!!!!
Love how they say its Is insulation problem. Which is correct but do you know how expensive spray foam installation is
It's expensive up front, but in the long run you save a ton of money.
OMG! I could smell the mouse pee as Damon was taking down that plastic and insulation. I've had to fix some houses that had bad infestations before. Now I can smell it as soon as I walk into a place that has mice. 🤢
Damon is to be admired for doing that stinky job on the area of the outside ceiling demo instead of designating it.
How is there no recourse for the home inspector doing this??
Live your own lives my dudes, don't buy a home with the assumption you'll live in it with your girlfriend.
I know 3 other guys in my social circles who purchased a home with their fiancee and are now left with unnecessarily big homes while being single, and they refuse to rent out the rooms. The drive back from gatherings at their place was always filled with comments like "shame it didnt work out/he must always be thinking about his ex". It's a better idea to tell people you're buying the place as an investment vs attaching it to someone's name.
Would really like a full accounting of what happens to the inspectors. Are they liable, what's your recourse???
Pretty much nothing ever happens to the inspectors, it's usually more trouble than it's worth.
Door closer to the garage is installed wrong.
Of course the realtor recommended the particular home inspector. They pay them to falsify the report
Did the home inspector get a cut from seller for the sale of the house?
I cant understand why the county does NOT licence home inspectors with an exam and training that must be past before a license is issued estate agents or realtor cant it seems be trusted to give honest advice, do these people in Canada not have to work to a code of practise that is enforceable to support home byers maybe realtors should not be allowed to recommend inspectors the local council should have a list that you know have been licenced and will do a correct job and if they fall short have their licence removed
The Dude dogged a bullet when his 'girlfriend' left.
These r very old videos...time to put new ones up
Not yet they’re going to wash them and bring them back
I would be so lucky to afford a house like that. time to forget about your social life and start learning some skills to fix your house bro.
Perfect home for a 25 year old. Too many steps for my 64 year old body.
Never use your realtor's inspector. The realtor just wants to make the sale. An independant inspector might jinx the sale.
50k pizza party for a job well done.
Doing all this work, the cost of materials, and the labor would easily cost 100K in 2023.
Do we see the pattern yet ? The realtor "knows" an inspector one that will guarantee the sale of the house, otherwise the inspector wouldn't have any work. Inspectors are like politicians..they tell you one thing whilst hiding the truth.
Why tf would you trust the person selling you the house to inspect it for you?
As a retired electrician, I cringed when Frank jiggled that LB holding the incoming power. Doing that could (remote but possible) have blown the whole electrical supply.
As he metioned, he had the power company shut the power off
Every time I see the plummets working without gloves I just want to yell at them. Risky business thaat.
Girlfriend left because of the house? I doubt it. I'm sure there were other issues. The house was the most obvious issue only
He finds very expensive solutions. 🤷
The problem is not what he see it the one he miss
Who pays for these repairs?
Kind of dumb question from an American, why is everything blue? The foam, the 2x4s, the drywall, all blue. Why?
As an HONEST Realtor NEVER use the inspector recommended by a Lender or Realtor!
I think anybody that goes for a home inspectors course to be a home inspector should have at least two to five years minimum in the trades before taking the course that way they can have an idea what to look at. I remember probably about 11 years ago I took a course but I've been in the trade for almost 20 years and I remember the instructor saying contractors make the worst inspectors cuz they nitpick everything so with that said I dropped out of the class because I felt it was unprofessional for a instructor for a home inspectors course to say that after I paid $1,500 for the course.
o today's ep how to wipe ur ass with 300000-400000 k xD
💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
She left him cause he wore a kilt....lol
😅😮
the inspector did a shitty job why did he make a deal with the realtor a kickback
Get a lawyer.
So the girlfriend leaves because the house needs work and was costing a bit of money, looks like she wasnt commited to the love in sicknes or wealth thing
He's better off without that girlfriend. I hope he doesn't take her back.
Well since California is going to use sewage for drinking water, just send it to them! 😂
If we ever develop deep space travel they'll be doing the same thing. Sewage can be scrubbed and cleaned and is then perfectly safe as drinking water.
