We've paid for two inspections that were useless. Within 3 months on each home, major expenses arose that should've been caught by the inspector. Based on our experience, we've undertaken learning as much as we can about homes and how to avoid signing for someone's problems. Wish we had Holmes!

I can image what the couple felt when they heard what Mike had to say. It shocked them to learn that their home was not safe especially for their kids. Mike had to get the environmental team to clean out the house before Damon and his crews came in to fix. There were a lot of things went wrong that tell you big red flags. I couldn’t even believe how the previous owners or inspector got away with it.

Oh, the inspectors know. Their REAL job is to smooth the sale of the house, NOT prevent it. The house I bought 2 years ago had "Minor" issues. I did come and inspect it myself.... I saw a TON of things the inspector "didn't". However, I can fix all of them myself and saw nothing that would break the deal for ME. It will be my last home in life, so I am willing to "make it mine". But that's ME.....
DON'T TRUST INSPECTORS! They do not work for YOU.

The inspector did his job!! He convinced them to buy this pig with lipstick house. Th inspector got a nice kickback from the Realtor of about 3-5% commision off the house's total sale!!

What come-back is there on the so-called "inspectors" who fail in their investigative duties??? Also, what come-back on installers who cut into the joists and rafters, for example?? There aught to be massive automatic "pay-up" demands supervised by the authorities.

There have been a lot of sour comments about incompetent home inspectors, and justifiably so. Just remember that we see only the results of the bad ones. I have bought several houses in my life, including new construction in a development, a 10-year old with one previous owner, and a 90-year-old house in North Carolina, and never come across any problems resulting from bad home inspectors. All the problems the home inspectors brought to my attention were the only ones found...and never have I had to chisel up a concrete pad to fix bad or faulty plumbing.
They're not all bad; Mike isn't called to homes done properly on his show.

The government must require all home inspectors to be licensed and insured. They must know basic building codes, including plumbing, electrical and HVAC. If there are issues that are questionable, note them on a report, so that the buyer can make an informed decision based on that report. The inspector needs to be held accountable for any noticeable issues that they do not put in the report, or failed to inform the buyer on issue that they may need to follow up on. There should be no more every "Tom, Dick & Harry" doing inspections, in order to make a buck.

Contract Law states that you are working for the one who pays the fee. In this case, the Home Inspector was working for the Realtor, not the home buyer. Hello?

Every time I hear, "We got a home inspection through our real-estate company." I shudder. Never never never go with the inspector working for the company trying to sell you a house for the biggest investment you may ever make. Get an outside inspector, read a bit about code, and perhaps call for a second opinion. It will cost more but worth it in the long run.

Is there any remedy for lazy incompetent inspectors? Not even mentioning inspectors that have a clear conflict of interest. Perhaps what is needed is certified inspectors that are insured, it things are missed and are not called out in the inspection and are not signed off by the home buyer (so that everything gets on the report and the home buyer is fully informed), the insurance pays to fix them.

Why are attics in Canada so low? Here in Europe if we have an attic, we actually use it as a space to live / sleep in. Ok, maybe not every attic, but in this show, all the attics are low and a wasted space.

Do not EVER use a home inspector that works for your real estate agent, do your due diligence on your inspector and hire them yourself; if they work for your agent there is a conflict of interest since the agent wants to make a sale.

I think that the only real home inspector in canada is Mike Holms, the others are wanta be's. they are in the business to charge lots of money and end up doing almost nothing for it, all the bad inspections I see here on mikes chanel cant be done by the same guy on all the house's, which tells me almost all the home inspectors in canada are not home inspectors at all, they just pretend to be, its a job, an income, and they done have the new home owner in mind at all, they are there to pass the inspection and to get the house sold. Period, there should be some kind of "law" that requires home inspectors to be liable and responsible for errors and missed issues, especially those that are so obvious to see.
