    Gotta be honest, the idea of Dracula being a modern super villain, with access to high tech gadgets, and even a doomsday weapon, is a cool concept.
    Same is wasn’t better explored in a more solid story.

      I think there was a cartoon from the 90s that had a similar concept with Dracula being a supervillain in the future, but I can't remember how well that concept was executed in the show. It was called "Monster Force".

    Okay, so Dracula is starved for a meaningful romantic relationship? Not the worst premise. He's a wealthy immortal being with seductive powers, probably has a couple thousand notches in his bedpost, so to speak. But where are those people now? Either thralls, or dead, or probably both. They never meant anything to him. But maybe he had a longing for something more substantial, someone to spend eternity with.
    Still, why should Dracula care if he gets turned down by some random woman he's only interacted over the phone for a few seconds? Does this happen with every telemarketer and spam phone call he gets?

    Honestly a klutzy woman accidentally calling a lonely Dracula sounds like the beginning of a good romantic comedy. He finds himself smitten, flies to America to make her his bride, only to find she has three kids and she’s a widow. He decides that the only way she’d consider him is by turning her and her kids into monsters. Her oldest becomes a Frankenstein monster, daughter mummy youngest werewolf. And she turns into a vampire. She’s understandably pissed and forces him to help her find the cure, which is where Baba Yaga comes in. Baba yaga tells them that the antidote requires ingredients from around the world. Meanwhile Dracula is still trying to win Emma’s heart only to find himself bonding with her kids and regaining the humanity he lost so long ago (queue Hotel Transylvania like backstory) meanwhile Van Helsing the 13th is trying to stop his lifelong rival thinking he’s trying to turn all of humanity into monsters. And Dracula ends up sacrificing himself when Van Helsings plan goes too far. Emma realizes she’s fallen in love with him, and that the only way to save him is to turn him human too. But since they don’t have enough antidote, the family finds they have the ability to shift back into their monster forms at will. And queue sequels…😂

    Well, according to my research on Mummies using IRL and D&D. IRL Mummies within IRL lore do have a twinge of 'magic' latent within them considering they're in touch with a necromantic kind of magic. In D&D they have a 'Dreadful Glare' that should cause people to be frightened.

    Dracula's reason behind not biting the mom of the family is honestly complete B.S. and Baba Yaga's solution is too. He is *Dracula*! Biting people, especially pretty maidens, is his thing! But, if the movie wanted to keep the whole "magical transformation" plotline, a much better reason for Dracula to not bite anyone is if he recently went through a dental procedure and so he can't bite until his fangs are completely healed. It's a goofy concept, but at least it would make sense for an animated cartoon.
    Edit: Also, when the mom mistakenly dials Dracula, she goes, "Who?", when he says his name. Lady, how do you NOT know who DRACULA is?! Are legendary monsters like him not common knowledge in this universe?
    Edit: About the whole "Ice Age" plan, if somehow Dracula does win and the sun does become a frozen ball forever, then the earth will become a barren wasteland. In other words, there's no blood source for him to consume! Unless he has some sort of blood substitute, Dracula and his bride are doomed.

    • @alexisdominey6487
      @alexisdominey6487 11 месяцев назад +4

      Another reason he didn't want to bite her is that anyone turned via bite becomes subservient to the vampire that bit them. He wants an equal more or less.

      Actually, biting her may only turn her into a thrall, the transformation into a vampire requires draining of one’s blood to the vampire, than for the vampire to be to drink the OG vampires blood, thus transforming them, however for that to work, the person has to actually WANT to drink their blood, therefor that could be the reasoning, either Dracula enslaves her, or he charms her so she chooses to be a vampire

    I also want to add, if frank lets his wife drink his blood he'll get lightheaded due to losing some blood and because he's tired all the time; he'd likely fall asleep. Waking up later with more energy and a more positive outlook, maybe his farting problem would go away too (since some doctors say that stress can cause that).
    Either way, by letting his wife drink his blood it reveals that to be happy they need to spend time together, relax and make the best of their situation. Something that would be a great moral for anyone watching! :D

    The sad part is, I think there is something that could’ve been salvaged from this film.
    For example, let’s look at the version of Dracula in this film. I actually think the idea of doing a more modern take on Dracula isn’t inherently a bad one. Naturally, after being hunted by humans for centuries, he’d probably decide that it would be good to look into science and technology, so that he’ll be an even playing field with the hunters who are simply getting more and more advanced as the years go. And by the time we get to modern day, I could totally see him being pretty much a supernatural supervillain with a super suit design for any travels he hast to do during the day I could cover his entire body.
    And I think, playing into the monster court, while showing off legitimate hair between the family members could’ve been interesting to see (like what you mentioned with the blood scene on the airplane.)

    This movie is an disaster as an adaptation.
    I literally read the book before this movie was even made and they pretty much took everything interesting out.
    Most of all: Dracula wasn't a joke.
    He was a threat (in general) and a temptation (for Emma) at once.
    And killing all humans was always his agenda. He despised humans. Emma was supposed to be his companion afterwards.
    Which is the reason why he didn't want to just turn somebody, cause anyone he turned would be in some way under his control and he wanted an equal as a partner.
    Like, someone that he can have actual real conversations with. Because he planned to kill everyone else.
    However, that it happened to be Emma was completely randomly chosen by Baba Yaga.
    He couldn't have cared less who it was as long as it was some woman that was good enough to look at, talk to and sleep with.
    Cause he was the villain of the damn book.
    No talking bats either.😬

Like, the daughter could have just told her crush that she was going to be a mummy for Halloween. There, problem solved! He'd probably believe that! "Oh it's just a really good costume. We're committed to our characters!" I know it'd still look odd in the airport scene, but you did point out that hypnosis also solves that problem.

  • @bijanthegr91
    @bijanthegr91 11 месяцев назад +9

    Why...why...just why do people think Dracula is kid/family friendly? Leave the Horror classics be, if you're not going to use the very horror aspects that made them icons. I don't see the appeal in making Dracula and ilk into jokes. Also Bob, nope Mummies can't do any of that...they're just really old zombies that can maybe regenerate from draining folks. That whole Dracula being lovesick makes no sense, since he can seduce any Top Notch babe into being his new lover. Dracula has been catching cases for centuries, this shouldn't be a feasible plotline.
    I also prefer Castlevania series Dracula's revenge plan: Calling on Vampires from all over the world to commit a genocide on humanity. No need for an Ice Age when you cover the world in corpses. I'm tired of filmmakers like this trying to make bloodthirsty monsters into misunderstood, tragic, and sympathetic characters with an extremely narrow scope of life. These monsters are monsters, creatures who are meant to be obstacles for our heroes to face and conquer. We love monsters for being monsters, not for comedic characters that double as superheroes. I will give them credit for not making these vampires need to eat Jelly/Jell-O.

      You see this so often with bad kids movies that want to sh1t something out for the Halloween season. 10:22 At least have the kid bit the bully on his ass.
    17:24 to 18:20 That's brilliant Bob. Shame the movie didn't think of the exact thing.
    Also, here's how I would rewrite this movie. Both Dracula and Imhotep hate the modern world and decide to team up to send it back to the dark ages. They need a magical amulet. But the bats end up losing said amulet and it ends up in the son's backpack (the son monster lore fan). His family (Who are from London in this version) arrive in Romania for vacation. One of them activates the amulet and that turns them into monsters. Maybe throw in a subplot about Imhotep's son falling in love with the daughter.
    Not prefect but still better than this garbage.

    Another big missed opportunity and something that should've been a no-brainer in the writing room, is to have their monster forms be either reflective of their personalities or counter-intuitive so they could learn something. The came close with the daughter and her insecurities about beauty, but nothing about her mummy powers reflects or compliments anything else about her. The son is a nerd who turns into a werewolf and scares his bully in one scene and the contrast of brain and brawn is never explored again.

    As a brittish man here and one who has been to London a few times I feel as though film just insulted Great Britain. I've seen the london eye, Big ben, The Shard and been to several Museums, one hospital, one zoo and many Comic Conventions in London though I've mostly gotten there by an electric train and arrived at Waterloo 1st before exploring the rest of London on my many trips out with my family and community care groups.

    Speaking of Max being the science guy, or trying to be. In the beginning, he does a presentation on a catastrophic ice age that's going to happen once the Sun cools down millions of years from now. What he fails to mention is that long before that happens the Sun is going to expand and completely evaporate Earth. Maybe he should just stick to magic. He kind of does in the sequel.

    Honestly the concept of this movie isn’t bad. A little generic sure but in the right hands it could’ve been a fun Halloween movie. But this…this is just stupid. Also if Dracula’s little henchmen is meant to be Renfield, why the hell does he look like Igor? Also I hate that they always make the Frankenstein’s creature dumb in stuff like this, the creature was actually really smart in the original novel.

    Here's a better story, Dracula is feeling lonely and is looking for a new wife. In this version, Emma is his daughter, and her family are already monsters, Frank is a bit dopey but not as bad as this movie made him. Both their kids are adopted.
    Emma calls her father to check up on him and tells offers him to come over to the States for an upcoming haloween party. He agrees and meets a motal woman. For him, its love at first sight, she just happens to look like his deceased wife. But she leaves town soon after they meet, lets say shes a travel writer and set for her next destination, she vlogs about the places she goes on her social media page.
    The rest of the movie is sort of stalkerish where Emma and her family help Dracula follow her posts so he can tell her how he feels. (In this world monsters use magic to help them blend in with humans).

    As far as I understand mummies they are Undead which is you know fair play to them but because the Egyptians have the understanding all magic like genetic gifts flows from their ancestors that alone makes them scary but mummies are usually the undead shambling forms of their rulers who culturally are considered demigods and associated with the Sun through the various dynastic demigods so they would probably be dealing radiant damage instead of necrotic and I'm sorry zombies do not need sun lasers!! But the idea of insanely gifted spellcasters immune to most weapons also having sun lasers is a nasty thought

    they could have just had the kid hypothesize that it's plausible that vampire weaknesses may be overblown by generations of hearsay and storytelling, and then have him come up with a simple experiment to test it. Like someone science-minded would.
    Otherwise, establish him as having at least a passing interest in folklore or monsters or something first. maybe just have him comment about hypothetical daylight walkers; vampires that lack the usual sunlight weakness in whole or in part.

    • @deathstinger13
      @deathstinger13 10 месяцев назад +1

      actually, you know what woulda worked well? Make the daughter a goth. bam! Instant excuse for why she(instead of the little brother) would have knowledge of and interest in vampires and other royalty free monsters. Otherwise she doesn't have much more to really do with the plot other than getting rejected by one crush, realizing it's what's on the inside that matters(which could have still been a thing for her) and then telling an ancient egyptian god-king to take a flying leap. Oh, and having the hypnosis power that really should have belonged to the vampire-mom, since hypnosis is more strongly associated with vampires.
      Playing on the idea of her being goth, you could even give her a subplot about being frustrated her mom got to be the 'cool' vampire, while she was stuck as a dumb mummy, including how she didn't like wearing such 'bright' colors. Could play in later to her realizing she was who she was, regardless of how she dressed. might need some reworking here and there to get it to work right though, but that's what multiple drafts of a script are for

    • @deathstinger13
      @deathstinger13 10 месяцев назад +1

      or even just make the boy the goth. Bam, instantly explains his knowledge about monsters still, and also would play into him both being bullied, and him initially wanting to be seen as scary so others would leave him alone. Alt culture crowds are more likely to be the target of bullying than the perpetrators, and wanting to be seen as scary could have played into his initial interest in the subculture.

    Been a while, glad I came to this review.
    First off, wishing Ravenfox a speedy recovery.
    Second, as for this movie, I think I've only seen a trailer for this one. Movie really looked like nothing special, but seeing the clips here, it definitely is nothing special. Basically its a generic kids movie following all of the tropes, but with monsters. Also, what the hell did they do to Dracula and Imhotep in this movie, two classic monsters from the golden days of horror are portrayed as idiots, while I haven't seen "Hotel Transylvania" movies yet (despite me owing the first three on blu-ray), but I'm sure Dracula being comedic was handled a lot better there than here. As for Imhotep (The Mummy), Boris Karloff he is not, he's not even Arnold Vosloo. Great review.
