I watched the Addams movies many years ago and totally fell in love with the first two movies. Even though the Addams family was weird and creepy, they were so likeable in their own way and I as the naive kid I was, would have loved to be adopted by them. And the message was always very clear: they are nice, benevolent and very hospitable to everyone, never caring (or at least never noticing) how people are weirded out by their lifestyle. And they always lived out their murderous hobby in the family and didnt try to do that with normal people, which means they are aware that humans are far more fragile than them. But if you dare to harm a family memember, you'll end up six feet underground. That's why Margret lived and became a family member while the true villains died. The third movie was so unwatchable and unfunny, I never managed to finish it. I couldn't even remember the plot anymore, just how awful it was. All the redeeming qualities of the Addams family were removed and they were now kinky psychopathic murderers. Worst of all: the movie is totally missing the point of what the Addams family is supposed to be: a perfectly functional picture-book family whose only "flaws" are their hobbies and their morbid lifestyle.
Blankeye-Sigma very true! Even Wednesday, the little sociopath, never acts outright malicious to anyone outside of her brother (not counting messing with them with a little scare) unless she is provoked. She teases, which I see as her version of “playful”, but never tries to harm them unless she is given a darn good reason. She will usually even give her version of a warning first!
@@takkycat Exactly. At least you could see that she had a good side too. She freed Margaret from the finger trap after being politely asked, she only chooses her brother as her victim because it's just how they play as siblings. And her short relationship with Joel was sweet. I was actually very impressed how much shit she took in the camp until she finally decided to fight back. And even then she didnt kill or seriously harm anyone... at least not physically
To be fair, Tim Curry is the only good part in this movie. Shame he couldn't be Gomez in a better Addams Family adaptation.
The line about being descendants of John Adams reminds me of the line from 3rd Rock:
"You mean John QUINCY Adams?! You're comparing me to THAT freak show?!"
Now that you recall John Astin on performing as the grandparent, they actually got him to play Grandpapa in The New Addams Family
That makes more sense than having him play the fake grandpa "Adams" in this movie.
Given how much of Glenn Taranto's performance was inspired by John Astin's Gomez, it was easy to believe that the two were related.

When I was a little girl, I liked Addams Family and Addams Family Values on par with the original B&W series, but hated Addams Family Reunion. As I got older, couldn't remember why. Thank you, Bobsheaux and Raven for reminding me why. Also, that idea you two came up with at the end, that's the Addams Family Reunion I would have liked to have seen. Too bad you two were not in the creative team for that movie. Anyways, thank you again.
I remember being a kid and LOVING the first two films. They are still my favorite movies till this day! But seeing this I wretched is HORROR 😂 I still cringe smh
So I recently chose to rewatch the '92 animated Addams Family (still great) the joke was also used there, and with Wednesday as well. "The robins are singing, the sky is azure blue... it's another miserable sunny day"

As much as I love me some Tim Curry, Raul Julia was made to be Gomez.

I always had the theory that no matter what happens to you at the hands or in the house of the Addams Family you are safe from any actual harm as long as you aren't trying to murder or seriously harm the Addamses themselves (hence why Debbie died, but Amanda survived) the Addams aren't murderers.
As to this "movie".... if this was supposed to lead into the "New Addams Family" series then the "we don't know our own relatives" is even weirder, since, from what I remember the 90s show was just remakes/"updated" versions of the original episodes form the 60s, with all the extended family that shows up in them.
Tim Curry honestly seems not too bad of a choice for Gomez.

When he's given good material to work with, he's great. This is not one of those times.
Can we talk about the obvious fat suit that Pugsley is wearing?
First, the Gomez and Morticia look is the best costumes Bobsheaux and Raven have ever worn, second, Tim Curry was a good Gomez. Raul Julia and Sean Astin would be proud, had the writing been actually good, he would have been better

Can't say I ever heard of this one. I've seen (and loved) the original live action film and Adams Family Values, but this one I have no idea about. But just from the song over the title card, this is gonna hurt.

Tim Curry as Gomez has got to be one of the best casting choices for a bad film.
I never really consider this movie canon to the other two. And that's beside the Fanon Discontinuity card (I mindset I usually don't like). That being said I *may* have my own explaination for Pubert's absence.
When I was a kid, I used to consider "The New Addams Family" canon to the movies; my explaination for the lack of Pubert's presance was because TNAF was set during the seven month period between the first movies climax and epilogue.
Now that I'm older than nerdier, and I have the knowledge that this was a pilot movie to TNAF, I think this would mean this movie also took place in that seven month time frame. Meaning Pubert wasn't even conceived yet here.
I guess that would also mean this movie and the series would be a midquel rather than a sequel.
You could say this movie wasn't spooky or kooky but altogether Ooky. :P

I don't assume that the first film would have revolved around the carolers' families suing the Addamses for pouring boiling oil on them. There's a myriad of movies (especially in the 90s) that have characters doing things without consequence when real people would have gotten sued and/or arrested 🤷
I havent seen the movie but I've always thought that Tim Curry fits the physical description of Gomez Addams as depicted in the New Yorker cartoons better than anyone who has played the role. The only actor who could have been better would be Peter Lorre.

The only Plus in this film is Tim Curry. Had They moved forward with the 3rd planned film and re-cast Gomez with Tim Curry I'm sure audiences would have accepted it. They could have done a "In Memory of of Raul Julia" in the the credits.
You forgot to mention that bimbo who was rescued by Lurch is the same gal who played Divatox from Power Rangers Turbo.
Aidan Hever The movie was made by “Saban Entertainment”, which also created the “Power Rangers” TV series.
Poor woman. She's not only in this trainwreck, but she later played the worst villain in Rangers history.
There’s also another thing I noticed that didn’t make it into this movie - Cousin Itt’s wife, Margaret, and their child, What. I mean seriously, Cousin Itt and Margaret were cute together and it might have been nice if the normal Adams couple saw them at the Addams Family house and saw how strange yet loving they were - it might have made the subplot at least somewhat touching. Also, What was adorable!!!!!

I never realized that Phillip Adams' sister in this film is played by Divatox of Power Rangers Turbo.
In the original show they didn't even like dogs. So they added it here, I guess. But hey: They have Tim Curry, right?
And furthermore: The story about the previous Addams's were already mentioned in the episode "Addams Family Family Tree". And John Astin was already Grandpa Addams in "The New Addams Family". There Pubert was mentioned as "the little one". Wednesday, played by the same actress as here, said that there were three of them but Pugsley ate the little one.
You would think Tim Curry would be able to make a good Gomez, but I kind of feel the director was limiting him so badly because they don't let him have the sophisticated feel that the good Gomez has. It feels like he was being forced to push his silliness.
Yeah I don't know why, but for some reason I feel Tim was misscast as Gomez. I do hope it was the director, I would hate to think Tim was just destined to under perform a role
@@SuperSwordman1 I don't think he was misscast myself, I have seen him in a lot of other shows where he actually felt very similar to Gomez. I really feel like it was the directors fault in this one. Tim Curry is one of my favorite actors so I may be biest but I know he can do better then what he was putting out. It seemed even Bob thought that because he did say how Curry did pretty good but leading lady was like a cardboard cut out.
Dammit, Saban! Maybe one day when work didn't mentally exhaust me, I can bring back my written review to either have the theme be Saban films, MGM films, Paramount Animated films, or any film distributed by FHE.

Exactly. They didn't MEAN to kill her, but... c'est la vie! There's a difference between accidentally killing someone and then having a good laugh about it (dark as it is), and outright murdering someone with every intention of doing so.

Also, I just realized that this isn't the first time Tim Curry and Ed Begley Jr worked together; they were in an episode of Tales From The Crypt.
Somehow even the autocaptions on this video got Phillip Adams and Gomez Addams spelling right, figuring out before the characters in the movie what the difference is.
I tend to forget about this movie. The first 2 are terrific though

The 1991 movies are my quintessential Addams Family. A+ casting. makes this film trying to pass off as being connected with them more disappointing.

... you know I think I just figured something out. The original line about Dolores’ husband being a psychiatrist was supposed to be “He’s considered one of the leading Head Shrinkers!!!”
To which Gomez would assume she meant a Witch Doctor. That would actually make sense and be kinda funny. The producers most likely were so fucking stupid, they assumed that kids would t get the joke... and then didn’t change the punchline in spite of the fact that it made no fucking sense. Christ!!!

I remember seeing this movie when I was little, but somehow I missed the scenes that mention or outright show Dr.Philip trying to poison his father or his other blatantly villainous acts, and thought that it was weird that he suddenly went evil psycho in the third act, even with Gomez making a fool out of him XD Something I did notice though was Pugsley hitting on Gina despite thinking that they are cousins, and upon rewatch it's ten times creepier than my young mind was able to process back then XD Perhaps the Addamses have a very old fashion outlook on incest and think that it's A-okay to get down and dirty with your relatives just as long as you don't share a parent?

Also I can answer why they didn't just get the rest of The New Addams Family cast to participate in this: name value. The New Addams Family cast members are no names, they aren't recognizable like Tim Curry, Daryl Hannah, or even Alice Ghostley to a MUCH lesser extent are. Saban needed someone who people could recognize but was cheap to get and that's why they were in the movie but not the show.
I have to admit that this was my first introduction to the cinematic Addams Family, and first reintroduction from the 90's animated series. It really did spark my interest in the family, even with how bad a film it is. It has so not aged well in my eyes, though Tim Curry is always a treat to watch.

Not to besmirch the awesomeness of Clint Howard but if he was in that Fist of the North Star movie, it's not a stretch he's in this. His lack of dignity is what makes him endearing. Hence why I still watch Ice Cream Man every Halloween.

I always thought he was the butler. They certainly never treates him like a member of the family, as Far as I recall.
In the movie, they say his kidneys are Addamses, but his other parts come from various other families. I've never heard of him being anything but the beloved and loyal family butler before this. And that's all he needed to be. Chalk up another stupid mark for this movie!
