      Are people really comparing a meme-character in 1.5 cinematics to one who has been around since the first batch of Warcraft games? Come on, he had little to do in Vanilla+ but screentime in a game like WoW does not equate to cinematics. Vol'Jin has been around for decades and has his own book(s) and central to multiple storylines, as well as a full expansion.
      I get that it's a joke but it's been done to death at this point, and I say that as someone who is just as upset that his only inclusion from here on is to appear in spirit-form to conclude the Zandalar storyline and unite them with the Horde. Dead waaaay before his time and I consider it criminal, but no, as much as I like Zappy Boi, he has not had a fraction of Vol's screentime.

      @@alexisnaranjo just two members of the Horde. Saurfang represents what the horde used to be and he remembers that, which is part of why he's so depressed. Zappy boy represents the new Horde and what the Horde COULD be. Saurfang recognizes that there's so much potential for the Horde to be reborn and redeemed from Sylvannas's actions which is why he ultimately changes his mind about claiming his birthright. He knows the young Horde members look up to Him as a hero and a leader, and if he sticks around he just might be able to lead them in the right direction.

    It's hard to die a honorable death. But it's even harder to live a honorable life. Saurfang has lost his son... but how many more fathers will lose theirs in this war? He won't return lives of those who have needlessly perished in Teldrassil. But he can still protect lives of other innocents.
    In his eyes, Teldrassil was a mistake he can't fix.
    But he can still stop future mistakes from happening. And by doing that, prevent other fathers from losing their own sons.

    • @bojnebojnebojne
      @bojnebojnebojne 6 лет назад +3

      There is nothing honorable about war. Any killing is an inhonorable act. But giving it's World of Warcraft :) i guess one could say Saurfang try to be as honourable as he can

    • @Generalek333
      @Generalek333 6 лет назад +24

      Saurfang is pretty much the embodiment of the Horde's honor at this point, but he cannot simply stop everything Sylvanas is planning to do. However, him willingfully surrendering to the Alliance will have a *huge* impact on the Horde's morale. Many soldiers will start questioning Sylvanas' leadership, making them either follow his example or oppose Banshee's actions.

      The orcs did horrible things in draenor because they were puppets of demons. They were deceived by Gul'dan. During cata they did this because they wanted to expand territory and were obeying warchief's orders (at this time they thought he was not a lunatic). Although I didn't agree with their expansion campaign over the forests, that is their form of living, exploring resources. This time, they were supposed to get one strategically important outpost for alliance. In the end, Sylvanas fucked everything up because... reasons lol.

    I think the scene with Saurfang and his son is taken after his defeat at Icecrown, after Saurfang carries his son away, maybe he lays him down in Icecrown's wastes to say a few words before taking him back to Nagrand.

    • @Merwanor
      @Merwanor 6 лет назад +27

      Yeah that is kinda obvious to me. And he is frozen because he is a death knight living in Icecrown, so ice and such would accumulate on his armor and body and he would not even care since he was already dead.

    • @Cboz1978
      @Cboz1978 6 лет назад +6

      Btw, Saurfang's armor is all wrong in that scene. :P

    • @Merwanor
      @Merwanor 6 лет назад +2

      His look is a just retcon, as they pretty much took a similar looking armor to the old Tier 1 warrior armor he used to have and change it to a new look that fits more in line with the Horde but still have the iconic jaw guard etc. So storywise he has always been using that armor. Remember that Sylvanas also looked very different back in the day, but she is supposed to have always looked the way she does now.
      The story in game will always be a bit flawed compared to how it should truly be and how it is presented via these cinematics. For instance the world itself appears much larger in the cinematics than it does in game. In the game these cities are really tiny compared to how they really are, it is not too scale at all. Just look at how huge Stormwind was in the Warcraft movie, that is how it is supposed to be. A big problem with the burning of the tree was how on earth those catapults was able to shoot across such a great distance. But I guess you just have to go with the flow.

    • @Cboz1978
      @Cboz1978 6 лет назад

      Yeah I was just poking a little fun at the armor, but if they had him wearing the armor from WotLK, that would have been some attention to detail.

      In the alliance version of ICC, Varian let's Saurfang come in after the fight to collect the body, saying to make way for a grieving father. Seems like this is just after that but before leaving the zone.

  • @heyitsmewillbro3331
    @heyitsmewillbro3331 6 лет назад +58

    His father is dead. Mother, dead. Wife, dead. Friends, brother, and even his only child. His boy. All dead. But he's still going. Because through all of it, he still lives for the Horde. Except for the moment teldrassil burned. Sylvanas, an undead elf with a nasty attitude that holds none of his values burns the tree down, and he has to wonder if this is what he went to Azeroth for. What he killed innocents in Karabor for. What he built Orgimmar for. What his son died for. And any man would be destroyed by that revelation. Its really really good character development.

    As I said elsewhere: Saurfang wouldn't be in the polarizing state he's in had Blizzard actually included important details within the game itself rather than putting those details behind a pay wall. In the game it seems as though there's a clear case of character assassination whereas in the novella it really paints a much different picture which is more in line with his character even though they're really pushing the aspect of honor through the roof.
    Even this cinematic doesn't really do justice for how pissed he was at Sylvanas when she ordered the burning of Teldrassil. It shows after the fact but we more or less already know where this is going for him.
    Their story telling is kind of all over the place.

      It doesn't solve my issue as a horde player that this is again the same crap we did two expansions ago with Garrosh. Its literally the only real meta story the Horde has had since Cata. It might change when it all plays out but that still means I have at least 6 months of following an evil warchief round like a lap dog doing whatever horrific acts she wishes of me or enabling her to do so.

    • @GulNadar

      Choosing the side that has a multitude of invasions under its belt has consequences. Unless you main Tauren, I can’t recall a part of their history where they themselves chose to invade another kingdom.
      And yes the Alliance has invaded places, the scoreboard for that is rather uneven.

    • @brynphillips9957
      @brynphillips9957 6 лет назад

      I main Tauren....
      Regardless this really isn't what blizzard tells us. They keep talking about greys. They outright said Sylvanas isn't evil at one point in the lead up to BfA. If the horde story has always been about the broken and the fallen rebuilding and re-finding themselves. Hell if this was the first time we had had this plot I probably wouldn't have minded. However this set up is practically what we had with Garrosh. That is just repetitive.
      Vol'jin died and Sylvanas because warchief for one reason. So they could have a faction story and effectively make another warchief the villain of the conflict.

      Sylvanas has been doing evil shit since cataclysm. Since she tossed herself from the ICC onto the spikes made out of saronite. Remember Ashenvale ? How it was destroyed with the plague ? Remember Gilneas ? How she was using the plague after being SPECIFIED not to use it ? How she struck a bargain with Helya, even putting her own heroes in danger, just so she could enslave de Val'kyrs of the Halls of Valor ?
      She was evil for a long, long time. And don't get me wrong. I loved her since War3, when she first appeared. But goddam. Stop whining about her "NoT bEiNg EvIl" She is.

      It's pretty obvious now. They did great on achieving their goals, but boy their Sylvanas character development is shit. Sylvanas is supposed to be cold, calculated and strategic, not be driven out of spite from a random Night Elf officer. She could have captured Darnassus and its civilians and there is nothing the Alliance could have done. If they marched on Lordaeron, the Horde could blackmail them by threatening to kill everybody - and there you go, end of the war before it even began.

      Gerogi Mihaylov Burning the tree was not the result of a temper tantrum. It was still cold and calculated. It was an extension of her plan which was to demoralize the Alliance by killing Malfurion. Malfurion didn't die, but even if he did, their hope wasn't gonna be destroyed by that act alone. She realized that when Summermoon herself told her so. So yeah, the burning of Teldrassil was decided on a whim, but it certainly wasn't the result of an emotional temper tantrum.

Sylvannas had her death robbed from her and so did Saurfang but Sylvannas chooses to try and inflict pain on everyone else and bring everyone down with her yet Saurfang learns from that and becomes stronger/gives him hope. I don't think it's good they portrayed sylvanas like she was 14 years old, a person that old that wise would unlikely take such courses of action confronting past and recent tragedy. They took all what made her a good character (different from what they did with Arthas, wich was an interesting change) and made her a villain so the alliance has an antagonist again. Kind of tired of that story

    • @Altrantis

      Um, except that's not Sylvanas' goal at all, she just doesn't care to do it. Also, Saurfang chooses to give up AND forsake honor, despite the fact he's not burdened with Leadership like Sylvanas is.

He was fighting under a banner that just burned hundreds of civilians which is not what the horde is about. and you saying she is a great leader is completely wrong, when you do not care what your soldiers think, and do not think about the impact your decisions will make on your men then you are a bad warchief. Sylvannas didnt give 2 shits about what saurfang felt about burning the tree, or even letting malfurion live. there WAS no honor in the horde after that, saurfang has always wanted a warriors death, and after losing that honor he had to force it himself.

    Why is it so hard to swallow that Sylvannas based on what happened to her during her life and after life that her motivation is just hate? its not lazy storytelling it makes sense just like Jaina is going the same route ( you guys think the alliance wants Jaina becoming a heartless villian? but it makes sense) and it was a small clip of her its not meant to show her motivations or deep feelings just her actions and part of what leds to BFA , we get the storytelling in game or else why even bother playing and instead release a book or movie right? We all knew the horde wont stand behind the actions of Sylvannas even if they stay in the horde for greater reasons.This will come back and bite her in the ass both from Alliance and Horde. Who knows maybe she just wants a release from her torment and hatred became nihilism.

    The fact Blizzard are capable of quality like this makes how crappy Sylvanas' one is all the more frustrating.
    They nail Saurfang here, Sylvanas just looks like she's being emotional in hers and then we find out that isn't the intention in supplemental material that isn't even out yet. Making Sylvanas' motivations look as crappy as they did is just bad, how great this cinematic is or any future material is won't make that Warbringer any better to me. It was just bad, not well played at all.
    Also kinda worried we're going to get Garrosh 2.0 - the difference in effort between the two is so staggering that it seems hard not to suspect Blizzards money is on Saurfang, not Sylvanas

    I wonder if Blizzard are trying to bring up a warloving side and a peaceloving side in the Horde. As of now, I don't disagree with Sylvanas decisions, I mean, this is not the first time she has destroyed an entire city. Those who prefer to do it more honorably will probably stand with Saurfang but my loyalty is still with Sylvanas, like it always has been.

    Good storytelling gets your emotions flowing. Warbringers: Sylvanas is AMAZING storytelling because getting pissed is a great emotion for a subsequent appeasement (in music, we call this tension and resolution; certain notes will clash with what you're expecting to hear and once the "right" notes hit, it's so satisfying!). Blizz did an excellent job getting everyone pissed off about Sylvanas that now that we have Varok's feelings, it's that much better. The fact that this is one of the most beautifully done cinematics Blizz has ever done doesn't hurt, either. The earnest Zappi Boi, Varok's heavy heart, and the smug satisfaction of Sylvanas are some of the best single frames I've ever seen.
    Bravo, Blizz.

    Pretty sure Saurfang’s son scene is a dramatization. It definitely looks like he’s wearing DK armor.

      Sylvanas is not morally gray - but the expansion as a whole will be (I hope).
      The reactions by both Horde and Alliance to what she is doing will be the deciding factor in grayness - what people do as a response to her clearly going down the deep end of morality.

    I honestly want to be moved by this but I can't due to what started it. The foundation matters as much as the rest and the current foundation for the new expansion with the way they are going with the Horde being bad once again. Every time they build up a redemption arc for any character or make them seem decent. Such as when Garrosh learned from Saurfang and tossed that commander over the cliff for killing innocents. Blizzard will always undo it in the most mundane ways we have seen a thousand times before. The old gods will corrupt or all development is tossed aside for them to act 100% not like themselves.
    Jaina or Greymane were perfect for a new war after all they suffered. Them doing it all behind the scenes and bucking the boy king. All of that could have been an amazing story and let the Alliance even have their own march on Stormwind kinda event later. It would have made sense for them to snap and been an amazing story but instead we get yet another Horde leader going off the rails. You know forgetting how she had that leader in Southshore put down for taking things too far and how after her own death she just wants to live, etc. Now she is generic angry bad 3.0 and it makes me sad.

    The cinematic was amazing and I admit, I teared up a little, nostalgia hit me. But their writing is just sooo bad.... It's so transparent how they destroyed Sylvanas' character just to introduce Saurfang as the new spotlight hero. I mean before I even finished the trailer, I was thinking "ooooh, that's why..." I have always been a Horde fan, even from the days of warcraft 2. I never liked the Forsaken, never felt like they belonged. Personally, If it was up to me, they would never be part of the Horde, not even mentioning Sylvanas being the warchief. But you gotta respect Sylvanas' character and, since they are part of it, you can't just throw all these years worth of story in the trash bin just for the shake of a shitty plot twist. Let me guess now... By the end of the expansion Suarfang will either sacrifice himself to stop Sylvanas and redeem the Horde or he will do the same but survive and become the new warchief. It's either of these two, it's literally as transparent as any cookie cutter shonen anime lol. Screencap my comment and if im wrong when it's all over, i'll reroll into a freaking Gnome.

    • @gabrielmaravalhas8876
      @gabrielmaravalhas8876 6 лет назад +3

      I see no reason for why one should "respect Sylvanas' character".
      I hate her since she betrayed the remnants of Lordaeron in Warcraft 3. She's just a plotting, double-crossing, undead abomination that gets a free pass because she's a chick in a position of power and the fanboys think she is "hot".
      Any moral ambiguity and depth she had died with Arthas, and all we have left is Lich King 2.0.

    • @KroVey
      @KroVey 6 лет назад +2

      She was never good, I agree with you, I hated her aswell. But, she was always smart and she wanted to protect her people. There were also moments where she displayed depth, like when she saved Varian. Her going into a genocidal yolo completely contradicts her established personality. They turned her into a cookie-cutter villain who "wants to destroy the world because it hurt her feelings." It's mind-numbingly stupid and cliche. Also let's not forget how this is a gigantic "fuck you" to Vol'jin who used to be one of the most prominent figures of the Horde and the only notable representative character of the Darkspears. They killed him off in an equal manner to sending a useless file into the recycle bin to replace him with her and now they are transforming her into another edgy anime emo villain who will die off for the next warchief. People think the writing favors the Horde. I beg to disagree. The alliance has always been consistent in their leaders and political systems. The Horde has always been exploited to milk the next villain of the week. It actually makes them all look retarded. The Tauren who are so kind and nature-loving, the orcs who are defined by honor and pride...you want me to believe that these races would just follow anyone without question to do whatever crime will be the lore behind the next raid, sure...

    This was a good one. Saurfang is great here. I still remember how meaningful the rp after his son died was. When the Alliance wanted to strike at the Horde, Varian ordered them to stand down and allow Saurfang to grieve his son. Varian was respected by many orcs, not through pretty words, but through acts of honor. We'll have to see if Manduin can live up to his Father.
