Its possible that Uther's soul is having a varian situation, where there are 2 pieces of him. One that has his paladin convictions that went to the bastion which would explain why he wants justice so bad and why it was yellow and the other blue one which was his compassion and more emotional tendencies. What I got was that the light DID save part if his soul from imprisonment within Frostmourne but just enough was absorbed by the sword to convince Arthas that Uther was absorbed. Which leads to the question of did the light save Uther's soul to guarantee that Arthas' soul would be cast into the Maw? And in doing so, they started the crack that would lead to the breaking of the machine of death? Did Arthas being put into the maw allow him to conspire with the Jailer to plan the breaking of the machine of death?

I agree with the split-soul theory. I also think it's why Devos sensed something about him and took an interest in something "below her station". Something was *wrong* with Uther; she could feel it. His inability to let go of the mortal plane was because *he was still there* and he yet feels the blade because he is literally inside of it. She's shocked because it shouldn't have been possible. When denied, she gives Uther whatever "justice" (they seem to disagree here) she could when she realizes her Order is wrong about whatever it is that happened to him.

I'm a big fan of both "He was my student" lines. Both had a different emphasis which underlies the feelings Uther has towards Arthas. Such subtle greatness in voice acting and writing.
The first emphasized "student", implying the connection between the two being the thing of importance.
The second emphasized "my", implying some sense of ownership of Arthas' actions as Uther failed in teaching him.

There's something interesting theories going on that I did not thought of. But here it goes.
Notice that in Wrath and all the other interactions we have had with Uther he was always compassionate and kind and forgiving. Even going as far to say that the real arthas is struggling inside. But this one is nothing but retribution and justice. So maybe when the souls split the humaine part of Uther was sucked into frostmourne and the light serving part went to bastion. Which explains why he acts how he acts in Bastion.
Now I haven't seen the beta nor know how Uther acts past this point so if this is wrong just let me know. But that could be an interesting theory.

I think it is somewhat presumptuous and unfair to call only one part of Uther "Light serving." Rather, both are equally devoted to the Light, but the one in Frostmourne is the forgiving side of this while the other is the more justice-bound side. These two also have very different experiences. The one in Bastion is essentially trapped in the memory of being killed by Arthas, and holding on to the quote in WC3, "I hope there's a special place in Hell for you, Arthas." While the one in Frostmourne is witnessing the inner turmoil of Arthas first hand, and realizes that much of what he has done was at the bidding of the Lich King, and perhaps the Jailor himself.

  • @MissMarvel_
    @MissMarvel_ 4 года назад +37

    My thoughts:
    1. From the Uther we met in the Halls of Reflection and the Uther we see here, it appears he was split between his empathetic, caring side and his angry, craving justice side. It might be because those were his two dominating thoughts at the moment of his death. Empathy for his student, and justice for what that student has done.
    2. This can be a driver for why Devos doubts Uther was meant for Bastion. Because he seems to be bitter and vengeful, and a soul like that isn't meant for Bastion. But the truth is that we are only seeing half of Uther in Bastion. Oh, she sounds *offended* when she sees what has been done to his soul. What great voice acting.
    3. Her focus is on vengeance, she keeps insisting that Uther is looking for vengeance, and I have to wonder if she's reflecting.
    4. As soon as she said it, I knew Uther would turn down her "vengeance" and replace it with "justice." I've played too much Heroes of the Storm to *not* see that coming. Uther and Tyrael would be great friends.

I think the whole Shadowlands "thing" aka the disruption of the machinery of death IS the consequence. Tossing Arthas who had not been judged into the MAW, which probably made the Jailer enter in action, allowing him to communicate with Sylvannas, allowing him to make a pact with her and so she can use his power and send souls into the Maw directly later on since BFA....

There is a reazon why they show you this event, and i think is exactly because later on they will make it clear to everybody this particular conflict started. I'm talking the Jailer acting to debilitate the other realms and turn over the actual status quo of the Shadowlands. There are books and so much lore we can talk all day and argue if he did nothing wrong or he has his faults. If it is as you say I wont mind. I was dissapointed years ago when Sylvanas killed herself and saw him in hell suffering after WOTLK. They portray Uther in this video blaming Arthas for everything, he didnt have his soul, he was controlled by the Lich King, Uther abandoned him at Stratholme.. That is why I like Jaina we can still see she has regrets she left him at Stratholme, she is the only one that tried to actually save the guy, she knew he kept her locket and so on and so on. If Arthas had his soul judged fairly, his eventual destination would have probably been the bastion, revendreth, or even maldraxus. Why?
-all he did was to serve his kingdom, his people. All he did was to stop the plague. He picked up frostmourne to slay the biggest threat to his people, the one behind all of the suffering his people had been through. However he made miscalculations in picking up frostmourne, which inevitably mindcontrolled him. From this point on he had to take a backseat when it came to his actions, other powers were now in control of his body. However his soul still tried to resist the foreign powers. His soul still clung to the memory of Jaina, and used all of his power to hold the new entity "the lich king" from releasing the scourge army upon the lands he swore to protect. This is why in my opinion, his soul belonged in bastion if it was fairly judged.
-However he did make mistakes of arrogance when it came to his actions. He was arrogant enough to think he should act alone, and try to stop this grand evil alone by himself. This is a reason why he maybe should have been sent to revendreath to reflect on his mistakes before inevitably joining the Kyrian in the bastion.
-If not the earlier two, he still should have been sent to maldraxus before the maw. If not to serve his people, he did what he did to gain power. His mistakes were made to gain power, in order to save his people. Regardless his own mortal soul that made the decision of picking up frostmourne, didn't do it because he wanted everyone to suffer. He is not an irredeemable soul. His soul was a tragic victim to a foreign power that took over his body to do irredeemable things. The soul of Arthas was not in control when these acts were committed, if anything, his soul tried to resist them.

On Uther's case, light's made his spirit split (so that a part of him could trigger the events we see).
I also think that the armor & helm were made by the Jailer as a part of his grand scheme (them being stolen and ending up on Azeroth to collect souls), what he did not anticipate was this split - otherwise he would have his 'agent', unbeknownst to him, doing Jailer's dirty work on Azeroth, without even needing Sylvanas's help. There's certainly a difference between Uther and Sylvanas, based on the novel "Rise of the Lich King." Arthas had no intention to raise Uther back, so he just let stabbed Uther (the book said throat btw, not chest O_O) and moved on, didn't care what happened to Uther's soul, although he might've assumed Frostmourne would claim it like many others. Sylvanas, however, Arthas wanted to raise her back, so he probably made sure to bind her whole soul into her bashee form, like how it was depicted in Sylvanas' Warbringer.

Its messed up that he judged posessed Arthas, this empty body controlled by sword and evil and he only knew murderer of king and Lich-Arthas, because they parted their ways during purge of Stratholme. Would understanding of situation change viewpoints of Uther and Jaina? After all years passed and not even scarlet crusade cleansed Stratholme... So perhaps best option was to bring citizens earlier death than put them in eternal suffering and brainless ghouls.

@@sushionaram The book also has some contradictions that WoW doesn't recognize, some of paladins that show in "King Arthas" mission(which didn't happen in book) show in Blades of Fallen Prince mission, Arthas apparently banished/destroyed/surpressed Ner'zhul and ppl keep saying "Arthas was in full control as Lich King aware of all evil he did", yet Lich King says "ï was once a shaman". So it's not as simple as that, Arthas was prolly only whole after Frostmourne was broken.
It's clear not even game takes the book as some sort of gospel or anything and deviates if necessary for plot sake. Consider both to be about equally canon and keep in mind novel came in 2009, while Wrath of Lich King was year earlier in 2008.

so we have to check on 3 things now:
1- the ability of the light to prevent power of frostmourne (and to an extent, prevent the power of the maw)
2- how kil'jaeden was able to make a deal to borrow some of that power from the maw (maybe the character who forged LK armor and frostmourne is now imprisoned couse he made that deal with kil'jaeden)
    and most important i think
3- uther and devos interfere to the usual iter of a soul; arthas' souls, instead of being judged by the arbiter, was stolen (?) by them and thrown into the maw
am I mental? maybe i misunderstood what is the usual iter of a soul (you die, the arbiter judge your soul and then your soul go in one of the areas of the shadowlands according to what the arbiter decided)

Frostmourne completely seals and binds souls to it.
the only reason Uther was saved and went to the Shadowlands was because he plead to the Light.
The only reason he ascended was because Frostmourne was shattered, and his anima was returned under Devos' care,
to be returned once he completed his higher purpose.
The Light answers pleas, The Void answers surrender.

The emotional part of Uther forgave Arthas long ago as we learned already back in WotLK. But since that piece of him didn't make it to Bastion with the wounded part of his soul I''m thinking he has a harder time distinguishing vengeance from justice and right from wrong.
I think the location of the wound on the soul is supposed to represent this as it's close to his heart.
Depending on the angle which Frostmourne was thrust in to him it could've hit the heart even at that location on the chest.
And without spoiling why i believe this I'll just say that yea I do believe you are right about him wanting to save Arthas but I would guess we probably have to restore Uther's soul first.
