    There are actually historical KNIFES with this general shape, primarily the Sudanese double dagger, which is about 22 inches or 56 centimeters long and was one piece of construction. I have forded two blades in this style for the fun of the challenge, and it's the scariest knife I have ever tested.
    the blade actually does do the helicopter of death in one scene.

    • @Anino_Makata
      @Anino_Makata 20 дней назад +11

      Okay, now this design makes more sense as a fighting dagger. So long as the points don't extend past the user's elbows, fatally injuring oneself would be more deliberate than accidental. And it could also have valid defensive applications, if you brace the downwards pointing blade against the forearm and block with it, like how you would with a tonfa.
      This concept just doesn't scale up to a sword design. The best example I can think where a double-ended sword could be practically used was in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.
      Sentinel Prime had a blade like that when he dueled Optimus in the end, but he had his paired with a large shield. In that use case, it just becomes a short glaive without the reach advantage (because you can't slide your hand down the handle to gain extra distance). That's the best I can think of.

    • @guyincognito959
      @guyincognito959 20 дней назад +2

      As a shorter blade you can at least do two reasonable strikes (slashing up and striking the point down). And someone who didn't train with this would be at a disadvantage trying to pick it up. A big old stick would probably be better still, but if the blade is pointy you could use it to get through armour.

      @@Anino_Makata@Anino_Makata (I am not a martial arts user; I am a humble smith, so I can't judge based on use, but I can judge based on design) agreed, but well, the question is, is it a true sword for Thano's who is about the same height as the hulk at eight foot five inches tall or is it just a oversized knife . (going by them fighting in Avengers Infinity war as Thano's height is not listed on marvel fandom but the Hulk is) or is it more an oversized knife? eather way with how its designed, like 2 buster swords ducktaped together it does not work. the advantage of a knife with this shape is it's offensive options.

      That's an issue with many fantasy weapons for me. Not just they would be impractical irl, they feel impractical even within a setting. Like, even when characters use them on a screen, you don't understand, how they manage to do it. For example, Frostmourne is a badly designed sword, but it looks like a sword still. You believe it can be used like one. And the staff like Thanos' blade... It cannot be used like a sword, neither even like a double lightsaber. Seems like Thanos himself is not completely sure, how to fight with it. He shows neither some cool choreography, nor any interesting ways to use it. He just swings randomly, and somehow manages to defeat everyone. It just looks dumb for me.

    This weapon gets clowned on a lot online for being ludicrous and impractical (which it would be, don't get me wrong,) but within its context, I actually think it makes a lot of sense, and is pretty cool.
    In the movie, Thanos does just magically spin the thing with some kind of telekinesis, as well as boomerang it the same way, and its shape would make it extremely good at that specific thing, which makes me think that was the entire point.
    If that's how it's _intended_ to be used as its primary purpose, and wielding it as a regular weapon is more of just an afterthought, then the design isn't really bad at all, and even makes a lot of sense.
    Its unwieldiness could even be a benefit in that case; if its owner lost it, and someone who didn't have telekinesis picked it up, they'd have an extremely difficult time using it.
    Of course, the movie does have him swinging it like a regular sword as well, but that could be a case of inconsistency/lack of communication behind the scenes.
    But overall, I don't think the Thanos twinblade is as stupid a design as people make it out to be, specifically because of the fact that, in-universe, it can actually spin like a helicopter blade via space techno-magic.
    Designs that are smart and functional when supernatural powers are involved never really translate well into real life.

    Give it to a rotary drone (since their structure wouldn't be hindered by the design since the sword would be underslung from the drone body) and then Thanos can control it (although from the clips of the Avengers films I've seen he's more the army commander and so when the 2 big armies face off at the end of Endgame he ought to be coordinating strategic and perhaps operational military matters so perhaps should give a drone pilot this job) without it being a biomechanical issue.

    An exotic weapon that you would never swing in a "normal" way. I rewatched Thanos fight with it and he swings with his arms considerably further away from his body than someone with a normal sword would(props to the choreographer for that fight, that must have been a pain to make look smooth). instead of swinging and using his joints he tends to keep his elbow permanently bent a certain amount to keep the blade far away from his body while swinging with the predictable angles that would require. He also chains attacks along the rotation the weapon requires and uses it as a defensive weapon a lot blocking several strikes with the broad flats and of course beams attacks with the Soi Soi Soi Helicopter.

    The thing is, it does actually spin rapidly in the movie. Thanos does that to create a shield against Iron Man's laser fire, like the Inquisitor's lightsabers in Star Wars Rebels. But double bladed lightsabers work where this one doesn't because the blade functions in any direction at any speed, and needs much less leverage to swing, so flicking the back end at someone is easy and still dangerous. This thing would weigh so much that moving it effectively would be ridiculous.
    However, it does look cool in action.

    Ahhhh the reverse canted quillons thing, I just want to cry when I see it, and I see if more and more often for exemple in fantasy designs, Those designs sadly pop up not only in werstern rpg games, western book ilustrations, but also I saw it in relativly new animes and it was in more than 2 titles. I love those reverse canted toward your own wrist quillons, that want to break your own wrisst or deflect incoming bladde straight into your own forearm.

    I think they'd intended him to throw it more, hence the helicopter blade...
    for fun: if I were to try to use it myself, I would hold it as pictured, so that the reverse blade's sharp edge was away from my body, and I would thrust with it and make a hook-punch motions, levering the spine of the reverse blade on my own ribs.
    but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to Comic-Book-Boomerang around, they just didn't do that as much in the films (the did a little bit, if I recall correctly, just not as much as it's designed for).

    Hey Skall, one thing I was thinking while playing Warframe and seeing the bows some enemies use, that visually have an energy shield on front:
    Are there real-life Shield Bows? Like yes, I know, ridiculous and impossible when you have to keep your arm straight, the "weight" would be unbearable! But right now I'm thinking of something in the vein of a GREATSHIELD that you PUT ON THE GROUND, so it's more of a greatshield with a hole you shoot through, a PORTABLE ARROW SLIT SHIELD if you will.
    I would envision such a 'device' being deployed on defensive positions where you can funnel enemies into one area so accuracy would be unnecessary, just shooting from a defensive position minus the investment of a proper wall - and portable.

    What’s interesting about double-ended weapons is that the bigger the handle and smaller the weaponized bits are, the more practical it gets.
    I’d theorize that the shorter the blades and the longer the handle on a “twinblade” weapon, the more effective and less danger you yourself it’ll be.
    That’d eventually just be a spear with a butt spike though.
    Or just a quarter staff, which is entirely handle, but significantly more useful than this design.

    I kinda just assume because he's already so much bigger and stronger than most other humanoids he doesn't need to do large follow-through strikes. And that he mostly uses it to dismantle heavily armoured individuals/vehicles with short powerful strikes, or he uses it as crowd control for when he's surrounded by a lot of smaller weaker enemies, probably employing a lot of pivoting in his style and using the bottom self facing blade as an immediate rear-sweeper when he turns

    It makes very slightly more sense based on the way that Thanos uses it in Endgame. He swings it sometimes, but the most distinctive thing that it does is spin independently, in the axis in line with the edge. That is why the edges are on opposing sides, since they would cut in the same direction as it spins.
    It actually reminds me a lot of the (admittedly much vilified) inquisitor sabers from Star Wars, where the blades can rotate around a stationary ring hilt. If you watch in slow motion, a very similar action is happening here, where Thanos' hand and the grip stay motionless while the ring-like guard and blades spin around them.
    How? Idk, space magic. I have serious doubts about the usability of such a design. Lightsabers at least have the advantage of not having to worry about edge alignment. In this case, lining up a cut seems exceedingly difficult. But at the very least, the form does somewhat fit the function: a pair of blades, meant to be wielded with one large hand, that spin around an axis.

    Rewatching the fight from the movie. Thanos doesn't really use it all the much and when he does he's doing this wide swing but also trying not to slice off his arm. Really doesn't make sense. Keep the top half of the sword and just use a shield like Captain America. The helicopter move he does it mechanical. Seems like Thanos really wants a polearm.

    And how the Cyberpunk literary genre has been foretelling the rise of AI over 40 years ago and the inherent dangers of it and no one listened. When I first heard about ChatGPT and other AIs getting real good I was not going "Oh cool, artificial sentience, digital life." I was going "Oh shit, we're fucked. Sooner or later this is gonna go sideways." ...
    AI could be good for our species... but let's face it, the chance of someone weaponizing it and turning it loose is far higher than it being a good thing. Or hell, even if no one weaponizes it, it will probably lead to mass unemployment.
    One AI could probably already replace most administrative office departments and do those jobs faster, cheaper and with better accuracy. They can already do writing at the same level as those Disney hires if not better. They can do 3d models, textures and more for videogames, if not well atm then soon.
    They could do programming, which in turn could lead them to make more AIs themselves.

    Honestly, if they really wanted a second blade on the sword, they could have done some sort of hidden, retractable blade in the hilt. Have some fight where it looks like Thanos is being overwhelmed or ambushed from behind only for him to use the hidden blade to get a hit in that allows him to win.
    It is a great win-win scenario for the studio. Thanos wins a fight with some sort of gimmick that could potentially show him as being sneaky/cunning, and they also get to keep the 'cool' double bladed sword idea for toys and such that is not absolutely ridiculous.

  • @ShinobiPhoenix-YT0

    I think they are definitely thinking of it too much in "human use" cases that make it hard for a human to you. You're not 8 ft tall and can handle a weapon like that one handed at all times, which he does. He grips with one hand, he spins it with one hand like a staff. A lot of fictional weapons are made by design to work only with within fictional body ergonomics. Impractical for us, not impractical for who it was designed for.
    Not to mention, all weapons are impractical or self-harming if someone doesn't train their body to use motions that minimize self-harm. Some are better against self-harm risk control than other and need a more disciplined person.
    Of course the way these two would use it would cause accidentally harm potential, but that's literally like any weapons, you train body motions to minimize them and more importantly, you don't judge fiction by what you do in reality. It's not actually fun. Any gun argument is just silly at this point given all the very unrealistic and impractical gun designs in fiction.
    You can literally see the motions Thanos uses while wielding it (like using the flat edge as a safe place to secure his hand and his own strength to prevent the back edge coming back at him). He also wears the edge to minimize injury to himself from accidental grazing.
    Since the weapon was at least made in scale to a human, but not to their hands, I imagine the stunt actor using it for the green screen test used very specific motions to match Thanos before he was digitized over in post.

  • @ignasmaciulis1095
    @ignasmaciulis1095 2 дня назад

    Wait, was it Shadiversity or Robinswords who made a video about these double-bladed swords being quite practical and good in combat? The things were, however, much better designed - they were double-edged and had much longer and better hilts, literally two longswords attached to each other. You then essentially just get a polearm with limited grip options and use it as a polearm which *just might* be fine. I also imagine increasing the handle-to-blade length ratio would help quite a lot. But yes, making and carrying them would be an absolute nuisance, and there are good reasons why these things did not exist.
