- The Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60, is a symphony in four movements composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in the summer of 1806.[1] It was premiered in March 1807 at a private concert at the home of Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz.
The work was dedicated to Count Franz von Oppersdorff, a relative of Beethoven's patron, Prince Lichnowsky. The Count met Beethoven when he traveled to Lichnowsky's summer home, where Beethoven was staying. Von Oppersdorff listened to Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D major, and liked it so much that he offered a large amount of money for Beethoven to compose a new symphony for him. Beethoven undertook the new work during the summer of 1806 and completed it in roughly a month, while also working on the Fourth Piano Concerto and revising his opera Fidelio, then still known as Leonore. The dedication was made to "the Silesian nobleman Count Franz von Oppersdorff".

i just love how this symphony opens. Mysterious, tragic and glooming...till it slaps you in the face with it's surprising joy. The rest of the symphony gets increasingly more cheerful and happy. Ludwig was unpredictable, unique and way ahead of his time. A musical genius.

I am a mid forties man and a mature student back in college first time since 93. I have found so much joy in my humanities courses like art appreciation and music history...I kind of wish I had gave Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, et al a chance in my youth because I have grown so to love it today. What beauty! no. 4 is my fav!!!!
Good for you being back in school! I teach online university classes for returning or remote students and find their dedication to be very high. Sometimes time management is an issue, but anyone who comes back--and I've had them up to their 60s--is very serious and knows how to get things done. Have fun! (And keeping listening to Beethoven, he says a lot.)

When listening to one of his symphonies you know it's him and his genius even if it's for the first time you listen to that particular one.

Je consens à votre avis pour dire qu’on ne trouve pas dans le saint Coran une prohibition de la music! Cependant, il reste faux de dire que c’est uniquement ceux qui veulent porter atteinte à la religion islamique qui ont crée l’avis stipulant que c’est illicite d’écouter de la musique, car on trouve en effet à l’origine de célèbres interprètes, et on trouve également plusieurs gens adopter le même avis et qui ont arrêté par libre arbitre d’écouter de la musique!
En ce qui me concerne, étant un musulman, je vois que la musique est une expression de la beauté, un langage de l’âme et un moyen de divertissement. Reste-t-il qu’il y a plusieurs types de musique, et parmi ceux-ci il y en a ceux qui corrompent l’âme et qui l’éloignent davantage de l’essentiel!
Donc pour ma part, je suis pour la bonne musique et dans les correctes mesures, sans exagération aucune! Et je suis encore plus pour la lecture du Coran et pour son écoute. Depuis quand le subsidiaire devrait-il l’emporter sur l’essence?!

It's all great, but the beginning is so very different in mood then the rest of the symphony. So dark and gloomy, the adagio intro and then joy and bliss throughout the rest of the Symphony. I love it.
