  • We dedicate this Hangout to the memories of two meteorite friends that we recently lost: Dave Gheesling of Georgia and Ryan Dillon of Arizona. We are all star dust and will become star dust once again. I am sure that in several billion years, we will bump into each other again. -Topher
To honor Dave Gheesling: (among other chatter) Fred McPherson wore a Falling Rocks hat, I showed off my “Preliminary Notes: Whetstone” book written by Dave, and Mike brings out his 5g +- slice of Conception Junction and tells Dave’s story of hunting it.
Pat Brown shared an 8kg individual NWA unclassified monster and a smaller NWA with hitchhikers (meteorites stuck to the backside). This week’s books were: “Principles of Meteoritics” by Krinov translated into English 1960, “Rocks from Space” -two copies. One came with someone’s research notes and the other was signed by both O. Richard and Dorothy Norton to a personal friend. Great purchases from local used bookstore. (Santa Rosa, CA.)
Marco’s weekly video check in from Germany includes three oriented unclassified meteorites. One amazing example makes a return appearance to highlight his “hitchhikers”. A dark 322g oriented meteorite also with “hitchhikers” and elongated regmaglypts is next. Finally, a centerpiece dripping nosecone 968g with ‘piano key’ regmaglypts. The reverse side displays fusion crust with bubbles and contraction cracks. You must hear the story about him buying it.
A 129g Seymchan with Russian style etch is shown and the method is discussed.
I reveal the inside of the “mystery stone” from last week. Was it a meteorite? I share some items from my personal collection. I purchased an Ex-Walton Collection Vaca Muerta 52.9g Mesosiderite-B4. The Los Vientos 331 H6 7.64g slice and the NWA 20.8g unclassified end-cut that Oz and I cut were both gifts from Oz Backman. The Franconia 11.74g H5 and the Sacramento Wash 005 0.135g H-metal were both gifts from Matt Stream to me while we were hunting the Franconia strewnfield on 10-24-20. I have great friends!
As collectors of valuable items, we discuss personal methods for digital curation of our collections and their physical COAs. We took turns sharing our different spreadsheets and what data is collected as pertinent to each of our goals. See some of my spreadsheet templates at: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Mike Kelly did three box openings that included: an end cut of NWA 13579 “The Odd Numbered Pallasite” from Oz (Oz and I are the main mass holders.), a slice of Dalgety Downs (L4) from Australia, and finally a 30g slice of Bondoc (Mesosiderite-B4) with both a Nininger number and a Walton number.
Brett Joseph is an avid metal detector treasure hunter in New Jersey. He shows us some recent finds including a LIVE World War I artillery booster that could blow up at any time. How did he ID it and what authorities need to be contacted? This is why it pays to have smart friends and to ask questions often.
Newer member Sam Lopez found what could be a 16kg Carbonaceous meteorite just an hour away from me on his family’s farm. Samples are already being worked on. Stay tuned for more updates. This could be huge!!

I saw an object falling from the sky. Simply it is a meteorite. What else then? Other than meteorites what other things likely to fall from sky? Anyhow it is very heavy and passes the magnet test too. Any other test to prove that it is a meteorite? My another question is, after exposure to rain for a few months, any chance of algae present due to moisture present on the surface? Pl clarify

I don't offer free services to help ID stones or want to buy them. Do you believe that you really have a meteorite? Please subscribe to my RUclips channel and submit pictures to: facebook.com/groups/isitameteorite or facebook.com/groups/meteorite.or.meteorwrong.
