  • Master magician Harry Houdini (1874-1926) starred in five silent films from 1919 to 1923. The famed illusionist/escape artist also founded his own movie company, the Houdini Picture Corporation.
In 1919, the great Houdini entered the movie business, eventually appearing in a total of five silent films that are now available in a special three-disc DVD box set: Houdini: The Movie Star DVD (Kino International, 2008).
I have not been able to confirm the exact film that this scene is from, but my guess is that it was a part of "The Master Mystery" (Octagon Films, 1920), a 15 chapter serial - also known as The Houdini Serial - which starred the great Houdini as Quentin Locke, an enterprising G-man who tries to crack a powerful criminal organization.
(Published in Cinemarolling by William J Felchner, on January 31, 2009).

Gordon asked Houdini after the Montreal show, if at the age of 52, could he still take blows to the abdomen. Houdini said he could, and before he could brace his stomach muscles for the impact, Gordon (a college boxer) delivered a series of three quick blows. It is said that Houdini winced with some pain and stated that if he had time to prepare himself properly, he would have been in a better position to take the blows.

Sadly, most people don't appreciate the art of escapology these days. Houdini was an amazing performer.

houdini was the greatest and there never will be an equal. he actually did most of his true stunts like this early in his carreer and was almost killed a couple times--and failed a couple of times. because of that the last part of his carreer he switched to non risk type magic such as the milk can and water torture chamber. (false assemblies he made and he simply climbed out)
for the straightjacket he dislocated his arms and was muscular and fit beyond belief.

There are a lot of books on Houdini including the latest: "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" . In general he would expand his body while being tied up. Then he would relax and the ropes get looser

The scene is from a silent film made in the 1920s, when all films were still silent. Frequently, a pianist or organ player would be hired to accompany the picture. I selected the ragtime music because I felt that it was reflective of the period.

I read in a book about Houdini that his sleight of hand was incredible enough that he could pick up a quarter lying flat with just the palm of his hand. He also usually had a pin in his throat that he could regurgitate to pick locks. Also he could break free from a strait jacket!

I was aware of this in the early 90's when I was in San Francisco. There was a street performer doing the trick with chains asking a member of the audience to tie him to a lamppost. I volunteered. Before I tied him up i got behind him & gave him a bearhug forcing all the wind out of him. I then tied him up pretty well... and tight! Once I'd finished it was impossible for him to escape. And he couldn't get out of the chains. He wasn't happy with me at all. But I got a bloody good laugh out of it.

He got out of the ropes in about 40 seconds. Easily. Not many people can do that. Though, Houdini was primarily an entertainer--an escape artist, more specifically. He did things that have "illusionist" added to his repertoire, but his main claim to fame was as "escape artist," doing stunts that were daring or otherwise difficult, all in record time, even dislocating joints to escape. He never would've cared much to be called a "magician" since he was often out to debunk magicians' tricks.

  • @mastermary2
    @mastermary2 12 лет назад +4

I've seen a lot of people in RUclips and in real life actually doing this trick and escaping.
I've seen maybe 50 if I count all together.
But no-one could do what Houdini did, escape faster than what it took for the people to tie him.

  • @2pacinseattle

I don't see why this is so amazing. I believe that most people would be able to wriggle out of rope. There was no special technique or "magic", it was just lots of squirming and rocking.

The trick to that (the being tied up with a rope trick) is that you have to make yourself big. I mean, you have to flex your muscles, inhale so your chest is bigger, you know, make yourself bigger. That way, when their done tying you up, you can relax to your regular size and you'll have enough room to wiggle free.

I don't think people really grasp the difficulty of this feat. Houdini would often do this under a minute, even dislocating his joints just to easily escape. I think most people escape him to do something a magician would do, and Houdini did do some feats that would classify him as "illusionist," but Houdini's main line of work was as a stunt performing entertainer. He was more out to do things very hard to do, all in record time, in shoulder-dusting fashion.

  • @PuckRG

When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 104°F Despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, Houdini took the stage. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital.[36] Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. in Room 401 on October 31 (Halloween), 1926, at the age of 52.

Just to wiegh in on the subject: Harry Houdini died of peritonitis secondary to a ruptured appendix, after taking multiple blows to the stomach (with permission) by a McGill University student named J. Gordon Whitehead, after a performance in Montreal. Early in his career, Houdini earned petty cash on the side by claiming he could take a blow to the stomach by any man.
