What difference does it make whether God exists or not?

Does it really matter whether or not God exists? What about that age-old question of evil? Does the presence of evil really negate the reality of a God?

"You have not thought about it deeply enough" says this smug, patronising individual, who further asserts we all buckle when confronted with non-existence. Maybe he does, but hard as it might be for him to grasp, it bothers me not one bit. In fact, as a cradle Catholic, it is actually very attractive.
