Hi, Rikki! This was not a fail! I was very impressed that you memorized the alphabet, colors, and numbers so quickly! :) Signing the BSL alphabet is insane! Why do they use two hands? I've watched Jessica sign over the years. It's hard to keep track when all of the signs are not pointed towards the viewer. I think it would be a riot to watch you learn an Asian sign language. Or Aussie! Wonder what the signs are for Kangaroo and Flying Fox? Cheers!
Just so people are aware, even though America and the UK speak English, their sign languages are completely different! Sometimes signs may overlap, but often they carry different meanings. For example the ASL sign for what is the UK sign for where. Many other English speaking countries have their own sign languages (such as Auslan and NZSL) because they've all developed differently. Maybe that's because of time or where the language originated but each country (generally speaking) has their own.
Another weird one is that "Deaf" and "hearing" are the other way round from BSL and ASL. Seems like an easy to make a difficult conversation happen lol
As a trainee BSL Interpreter, it was really nice to see you have a crack at BSL - Well done! (a few of them were a bit wrong but it's cool youre learning) i know jessica has mentioned it in some of her videos, but some of her signs aren't always produced correctly due to her medical conditions, so some of them might not be quite right :)
Rikki Poynter W in BSL and Auslan is one of my favourite letters to sign! I wish we used the one handed alphabet though as it’s easier when you’re holding things!
I’ve found it to be harder than the ASL. In asl you can cut your face in half and instantly you know that male people are on the top and females are on the bottom. With the BSL there all over the place.
Well done Rikki! Im a BSL user and its refreshing to see an ASL user learning BSL. I would like to learn ASL myself and have picked up signs from watching you and fellow asl deaf youtubers! Keep it up :.)! X
Pretty good for a beginner! A couple tips: the R is like our X handshape, touching the palm. The K handshape is using that X handshape, tapping the non-dominant index finger in the middle, basically making the letter K. The difference between L and T - for L, the whole index finger touches the palm, and the T taps the side of your hand, not touching the palm. Also, for the Y, make sure your finger moves down the BACK of your hand, not down your palm. Other than that, I think you're good! (I'm pretty sure that these are the ones that are the same in Auslan, which I know better than BSL, and their alphabet is nearly the same with slight differences for some letters)
The BSL/Auslan/NZSL two-handed alphabet is complicated enough, you gotta see the LSA alphabet! (Lengua de señas argentina, or Argentine Sign Language). It uses one hand, two hands, your face, your body. AY! Another interesting one-handed alphabet is Swedish.
I've always struggled in my ASL classes in highschool. Being deaf but having a cochlear and in a hearing family made it hard to follow along ASL sentence. When I sign, I try to be grammatically correct much to the amusement of my peers.
I've given up on grammar since everybody I know and everybody that's ever taught me anything (and who is deaf and grew up with the language) always signs more English even teaching it to me so I'm just like... ok lol
I've just done my exam for BSL level one and I'm waiting on the results. Took me so long to get using my dominant hand right because you so often have to use two hands 😂
I worked in a SEN school. We had some kids who were partially deaf and I did BSL level 1 as a teenager. I forgot a lot of the BSL because it was so long ago (but always remembered the signs for the alphabet and 'laughter' lol) but working with the kids has helped me learn some new ones. The first one they taught me was 'party' (haha, I worked with teenagers!)
@@itskdog The school has both. A lot of teachers and students know both. I couldn't say which one is used more, but as I did BSL that's the one I recognise the most.
Talita James I’m learning Auslan(hearing person with interest) and yeah I’ve noticed a lot of similarities to the BSL that I’ve seen but not too many with ASL
k is using your dominant hand's index finger curved (i think its the same shape as x(?) in asl, but you tilt your hand a bit) against your non-dominant's index finger pointing up, so it looks like a 'k'
This is really cool, it took me back and reminded me to study up on my BSL. One question: Where did you learn that "K" from? From people I know, it's always been second hand index finger up, and dominant hand make a "hook" with the index finger, so the middle sections of the fingers touch, so it makes a very rough "k" shape. Maybe it's a regional thing.
Rikki Poynter Honestly I’m a fairly new viewer, but your awesome personality and willingness to take time to respond to your fans comments is what won me over
Rikki Poynter Well I really commend you on that because it shows that you really care about the people who watch your videos and honestly I know that it makes my day.

It’s really made me insecure about my signing, but I feel like without any mouthing, I have no expression.
For class/educational purposes, I can see why it would be marked down. I was thinking this would be an interesting suggestion to learn next to examine the similarities and differences between ASL LSF and maybe even LSQ. Would be neat to include some simple greetings like hello, goodbye, please, thank you that kind of thing.
Really proud of you for giving this a bloody good bash! :D I'm currently attempting to learn some Japanese sign language :) Might be of interest for you as well?
If you want to try another sign language, how about DGS (deutsche Gebärdensprache/ german sign language)? It's one-handed too, so it is probably easy to learn :)
My signing was not bad until brain surgery. I am looking for a person to sign a song I am working on that I wrote. My channel has many video's but this one is special. It is called "The Ballad of Lonely Star (Silent Wonder), that is on my new album. The song is about a deaf person watching a battle and trying to understand and make sense of it. I am looking for some who can sign in the proper syntax. My signing is not good in it structure. My training was in ASL.
Hey Rikki. Question. You respeak everything after you signed it for easier use for us visually impaird guys. Would it not be easier for you to just speak and sign at the same time?
ASL (as well as BSL) don't have the same sentence structure as English, so words and signs meaning the same thing wouldn't necessarily be in the same spot in a sentence. I'm not familiar with ASL grammar but I sign Auslan, which is mutually intelligible with BSL, so I'll try to give an example. English: I'll eat lunch at midday. Auslan: Midday I eat lunch. There are other issues, but to my understanding that's the main obstacle. (Edited for spacing)
So really, the only time SimCom is really "acceptable" is when you're around both hearing and deaf people. So when I'm live on Twitch, it's easier to SimCom for everyone. Or if I'm having dinner with a group of hearing people and deaf and some may not sign. But overall, it's best to keep them separate and put them together in other ways (like voiceover). Hope that helps!
It would probably be hard for me only because my brain can't focus as well as it used to, but I'm no stranger to learning multiple languages at once so who knows
@@rikkipoynter i have ADHD so i get the focus problems! i'm planning on learning at least some of both (long story) so it'd be cool to see someone else try too haha
You did great trying to learn BSL, two-handed spelling is so irritating if you're holding anything, you Americans don't know how lucky you are to have it all on one hand!

ASL is easier than BSL. In ASL, you can sign and spell with one hand. In BSL, you need to use two hands, two feet, and your soul to sign or spell.

Be grateful no Sign Languages involve feet ;)
Haha! That would be interesting.
I wanna see!
Chimpanzees use feet as part of their natural gesturing language.
i wonder how hard it would be to try to learn both at the same time...
It would probably be hard for me only because my brain can't focus as well as it used to, but I'm no stranger to learning multiple languages at once so who knows
@@rikkipoynter i have ADHD so i get the focus problems! i'm planning on learning at least some of both (long story) so it'd be cool to see someone else try too haha
this was so sweet rikki
i was born deaf and its a very scary world as is and others who can here are so lucky
You did great trying to learn BSL, two-handed spelling is so irritating if you're holding anything, you Americans don't know how lucky you are to have it all on one hand!
a sign language from asia
vayue but gives you youtube options
Hey you have geotag on your video you may want to change that for safety reasons
I put it on there. I'm already vocal about living in Charlotte and my PO Box is even listed at the end of the videos, no worries. :)
Rikki Poynter oh okay. Good to know. Regardless stay safe!
Why isn't there one international sign language.
The same reason there isn't one spoken language for everyone. Even International Sign isn't truly international.
