    I feel like for someone growing up with BSL learning ASL must be similar to me growing up speaking German and learning English. Some words/signs are the same or very similar, but it's still a completely different language.

    • @Kaeinlya
      @Kaeinlya 6 лет назад +8

      German is so weird as an English speaker. English and German spellings both became standardized at basically the worst possible moment, because it was shortly before or during massive sound shifts. But not being able to speak any French, it's surprisingly easy to read and pick out the main ideas because we stole all their spellings.

      @@Kaeinlya I actually think German spellings are fairly phonetic, especially compared to English.

      @Solar powered potato except for loan words that can be spelled in a German or in a "foreign language" or in a mixed way. Same goes for pronunciation

    Interesting what you say about the root language - ASL was based on French Sign Language, because the people who developed BSL basically refused to share. Charming!

    I love finding out the differences between ASL and BSL, and any other national Sign Language, but I've always been more intrigued by our own regional variations. It struck me with your sign for 'present' because that one is more connected to the giving or receiving of a gift, whereas my sign (either Manchester or Liverpool) is more reminiscent of the bow on top of a present.

    When in ASL she signed eve she was actually just spelling it. Your sign for turkey is similar to the ASL sign for pig except all the fingers stay together

    While I prefer BSL (not only because I'm Canadian and Canada is part of the Commonwealth and our countries are interwoven but that my heritage is English and I grew up in a very English household) its interesting that you can see how each sign makes sense in its own way. I'm getting a really interesting lesson on BSL and learning all the different sign language. The other day when you taught us how to sign Merry Christmas, I just went around the house signing it all day and I've been waiting to find a deaf person who I can wish Merry Christmas to! lol

  • @93midnightsunrise
    @93midnightsunrise 6 лет назад +82

    For some reason, my brain didn't realize that fingerspelling is different! It didn't hit me until the spelling of 'eve' in 'Christmas Eve' and 'Kwanzaa'

    • @Kaeinlya
      @Kaeinlya 6 лет назад +10

      ASL is a one handed alphabet and BSL uses both hands. ASL has different signs for all the vowels, and BSL counts them out by pointing to fingers on you other hand.
      They are basically unrelated linguistically because ASL was developed in part by a French man named Gallaudet working off of French Sign Language (LSF). BSL was developed completely independently. Most sign languages are not tied 1 to 1 with the spoken language of their country.

    I am mostly fluent in ASL, last year I took the time to learn through youtube, the alphabet in BSL. It amazed me. I still remember the alphabet but I struggle with spelling using BSL. I always seem to revert back to ASL. I would love to see a video about the colors or even numbers in BSL. I know in BSL when you get to 6, it is completely different then ASL.

    Hey Jessica, I have been troubled by lots of illnesses for most of my life and only recently we finally figured out what was actually wrong with me. Since my diagnosis and the beginning of treatment I have improved a lot. However, I was still (quite impatiently) waiting for the moment I will finally be ‘normal.’ I have been binge-watching your videos for the last few days (and it’s my exam week, not the best of ideas) and I feel that watching you has made me feel a lot better about myself. It will not be the end of the world if I don’t get completely healthy (and being realistic, I never will, because it is chronic). You showed me how amazing you can cope with it and made me that I wasn’t just able to cope with it just fine, but that I actually already am!

I know you seem to wear more 1950 clothing but I just wanted to tell you about the 1940s weekend we have every year in September, it’s in Sheringham and Holt (NorthNorfolk), lots of people dress up and the town also gets a 1940s makeover, its very fun. Not sure if you read this comment and if you do I apologise if sound a bit gibberish yay for spell checker thingy otherwise it would be a lot gibberish,I should not be writing when tired it’s taken me like an hour. I came over from Rikki's channel and have only seen this but you already have a new subscriber. Your videos are so beautifully filmed that I lost track of time watching this video and didn't even realize that it was 16 minutes long (which is impressive only because I have a short attention span). Your fashion is also amazing and you just seem like a genuinely cool person. So hi! I don't know much sign language, just a little ASL but I am a linguaphile so language differences/similarities of any sort make me SO happy with life. You doing the ASL/BSL comparison won me over as a suvsriver.

    Interesting and fun video.
    I learned ASL, after a friend's little sister lost her hearing, back when I was seven; now at twenty-two, I still use it, a bit less but it's still there. Kind of second nature to my hands. And since I've left school, I've been learning BSL on my own. I'm getting the hang of it. As you said, knowing both gets tricky sometimes. Sign Languge is a beautiful language.

  • @sgchesney
    @sgchesney 6 лет назад +1

    This is very informative, I live in Canada (my area uses ASL) and I kept getting partially confused whenever I see a sign I recognise in your videos because I know you use BSL (I was a little worried I'm learning the wrong signs) but it's very interesting (and relieving) to see that the two can be similar - thank you!

    My father had a co-worker who was deaf and unable to speak so they got a class in sign language, the Swedish version. I picked up the alphabet from that book. Later, Sweden switched to what was said to be a more international version so now I have no clue what the Swedes do anymore :D Same goes for the Norwegian version, which I'm told is slightly different. I will go through your BSL series and learn a little of that at least

      It's 19th century politics. ASL is derived from French Sign Language cos the USA had a strong relationship with France after independence. Australia was probably still a colony when BSL was introduced.

    So interesting too how some of the ASL signs I grew up with are different than mine. Most I'm familiar with, but peace was very different (the one I grew up with was very similar to the BSL one) and present for me is the classifier for tying a bow followed by "give". But that's just like spoken English in America, I guess. Different words for the same things, and for the most part we're familiar with others but one feels right haha.

    I know this video is a little old now but seeing Claudia learning to sign along with the song We Wish You A Merry Christmas at the end made me curious about how much sign Claudia knows. I know you've mentioned she'll sign some things to you but that you rely mostly on your ability to lip read. Could you maybe do a video where you quiz her on her sign knowledge?
    I'd also be really curious to see more video comparisons of BSL and ASL. I'm learning JSL (Japanese sign language) and the signs for all of these words, except for reindeer, are all quite different which I find super interesting, especially since Christmas is a relatively recent holiday in Japan compared to in England and the United States.
    Lastly, I'm really jealous of your oven and the meal you made with it.

    This is so cool! I just started learning Libras, which is the Brazilian sign language and everything is so different from BSL and ASL! You should check it out!

    I love this video! I've always been interested in signing and seeing differences here was brilliant to me.

    I relate to both of you, and am very happy to have found you both. Hope you have a great holiday!
    I missed where you got the cardigan, and I was eyeing that! Max Sweaters? Where is this?
    Also, Buffy and Faith YASSS!
