So true. It has noticeably evolved over the years, becoming more technical in some ways as well. I love both, by my heart will always be stuck in the punk-influenced thrash of the 80s when it comes to my playing style. 😁
Yeah, Thrash i know better than the new school is more inspired by heavy metal and hardcore It has that certain swing feel almost, and another part is actually hearing just about every switch from one chord/note to the next. Even full out bands like Slayer and Exodus and Sodom have actually ear-aching tones, but the players are actually super talented being able to not allow so much dirt in their frantic playing The only real newer thrash i listen is Hatchet (and Havok and Hexen, but they disbanded, sadly), and they have that new edge with less "standard" riffs, but still keep that old school vibe. Either way! THRASH4EVER
Theres still some hardcore influence & death metal influence is also pretty common. In a lot of the older stuff you can definitely hear where nu-metal & metalcore were influenced. Metalcore was so heavily influenced by thrash to begin with. Most of those 00s bands made thrash riffs mixed with more explicit metallic hardcore & often different combinations of pop-punk/emo/screamo/post-hardcore (and then some of them fucked it all up with emo/butt rock style vocals). God Forbid was my favorite metalcore and they were also like NWoAHM thrash. Bit different now as theres a lot of metalcore inspired by metalcore, and Meshuggah, often Tool, and nu-metal influence is almost omnipresent. I could be wrong but if I had to guess, the bands making thrash today are probably not the ones who were big metalcore scene kids, they were prolly the metal nerds listening to punk/hardcore/crossover, old school thrash & death, groove metal and probably nu-metal. Crossover thrash vs. metalcore would be a fun comparison.
They sound old though, the time's taking its toll on them clearly. New sound has this feeling of freshness brought by new techniques and tuning. It's like there's more air.
For those interested Old School Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls Kreator - Pleasure to Kill Holy Moses - Near Dark Slayer - Necrophiliac Anthrax - Indians Sodom - Nuclear Winter Sepultura - Arise New School Enforced - Avarice Hellripper - The Nuckelavee Evile - Sleepless Eyes Spiritworld - Deathwestern Nervosa - Suffocare Crisix - The Many Licit Paths Syslosis - A Sign of Things to Come
I dont know how to express how much i love Sylosis They have the heaviness of Modern Metal mixed with some awesome thrashy riffs Im going to give a listen to Nervosa too, that was dope
Espectacular crossover!!! . Son los dos que sigo siempre , uno para escuchar lo nuevo y el otro para recordar por qué me gusta el metal. Muchas gracias!!! 😎🤘🏾
What an amazing collaboration and thoughtful comparison, I loved the thematics and you guys are fantastic! Would love to see more, going right to the old vs new school video!
This is a great channel. I even appreciate the looks you give each other like " is that al you got" great stuff and riffs, and like the different guitars on your channel
I'd add The Way is Narrow by Iron Age (even though that song isn't really new) and For the Horde by Exmortus, love that super fast technical intro riff.
As a fan of punk and hardcore, I tend to gravitate toward the older stuff as you can see that it is really influenced by that stuff but some newer stuff is still cool. I still prefer stuff like Power Trip (RIP Riley) who were obviously more influenced by the hardcore stuff if I'm gonna listen to newer thrash.
I love videos like this, because they instantly prove everyone living in the past who says that "there's no good music anymore" very wrong. There's plenty of good, modern metal out there; stop whining about the 1990s and go look for it.
Anyone who says there’s no good music anymore is crazy. But…. People listening to this kind of music as a movement that is def lost. The communal aspect of all this is lost.
>There's plenty of good, modern metal out there If only it didn't require wasting HOURS on end to dig through endless procession of trash filled to brim with Slayer worship and horrible vocals to find those few bands that are at least above average.
Great video!!! But I'm sorry, but i'm not sure if i hear much of a difference style wise? It all sounds sick but i'm not sure i would be able to differentiate...
The "new thrash" doesn't sound like thrash at all🤣 doesn't mean it sounds bad, but for me, it's not thrash at all, I stick with old school without a doubt
how much of that is down to nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses rather than the actual melodical and technical composition. you tend to like things you grew up with
All the riffs in this video are awesome, and it's a great way to discover new songs or go back to old classics. Still a lot of brilliant riffs and guitars parts in modern thrash! IMO what sets a thrash song and band apart from the others were and still are the vocals. I feel like we don't get enough today. There is a number of new bands with killer guitars and good, sometimes great singers. Check out Mindtaker, Insanity Alert, Void Vator, Gama Bomb, Angelus Apatrida, Drowning in Blood, Vingador, Colony Drop... Nonetheless I feel the majority are brought down by weak vocals and uninspiring melodies, which is a shame. I've listened to too many albums without a single memorable hook, just monotonous screams and growls, with bloated production, trying to hide the lack of an effective vocal line. It gets boring real fast.
Megadeth sounds much more modern, fresh, and smoother than any other band from a current stage. Also, the influence of black and death metal, of which I am not a fan, is very audible.
Love how it started with in my opinion the two greatest albums of the respected timelines - the best old school trash album being rust in peace and the best new thrash album being War Remains🤘
Hey Thomas ! Thanks again for having me as the "old-school-guy". You pulled out some killer riffs !!
My pleasure to collab with one of my RUclips inspirations! Great riffing 🤘
This is a much better project with two players....maybe then vs. now should be a collab thing going forward.
Noted! Maybe that can be arranged
Older thrash is way better 🤘🤘🤘
I find a strong Heavy Metal and Punk influence in old school Thrash, a certain Nu-metal and Metalcore influence in new school Thrash.
So true. It has noticeably evolved over the years, becoming more technical in some ways as well. I love both, by my heart will always be stuck in the punk-influenced thrash of the 80s when it comes to my playing style. 😁

Groove Metal changed everything man
Theres still some hardcore influence & death metal influence is also pretty common. In a lot of the older stuff you can definitely hear where nu-metal & metalcore were influenced. Metalcore was so heavily influenced by thrash to begin with. Crossover thrash vs. metalcore would be a fun comparison.
I stay with Old School...but thats maybe because of my age...they are both great but the old school vibes give me something special that goes deeper 🤘
I agree. I love the riffs from both but thrash still has a groove and old school thrash to me has a better groove
They sound old though, the time's taking its toll on them clearly. New sound has this feeling of freshness brought by new techniques and tuning. It's like there's more air.
Everybody gangsta until Sepultura "Arise"
Being immediately destroyed by Sylosis afterwards.
@@Landekar 😂😂😂 you're funny, you make good jokes 👍🏻👍🏻
@@Landekar You really funny 😂😂😂

Arise! That is some great shit right there. I love the technique on the new stuff. But the old just has some soul to it that can't be beat.
That deathwestern was awesome never heard of that before
Spiritworld are so good, they blend thrash with 90's metalcore/hardcore like Integrity, Ringworm and Arkangel
This channel, the concepts and the music are all stellar!!🔥🤘💯
Enforced = favorite thrash band
Damn didnt expect hellripper here.. nice stuff! great work
Having a guest was super cool! And great picks as always
Sylosis 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Love seeing some Spiritworld!
Awesome...even if I'm 43 and I'm definitively old schooled...and I think your playlist needed some Tankard...great job however...
Im not a big thrash metal fan but you guys just killed it 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
That was sick. Thanks for the modern pointers, and some throw back catch-up
This was really fun to watch! Now I have to learn some of these sick riffs.
Espectacular crossover!!! . Son los dos que sigo siempre , uno para escuchar lo nuevo y el otro para recordar por qué me gusta el metal. Muchas gracias!!! 😎🤘🏾
This was a fun watch, the difference is obvious but both are still great on their own. Long live metal!
The only win riff in modern thrash is the one from hellripper
anyway, i love this kind of content keep this going hoping for part 2!
Thanks! It doesn’t feature the suffocater, but I do have another thrash metal then vs. now video out from last year 😁
And sylosis
Love checking out the bands from these videos. That Sylosis riff at the end is so sick! 🤘🔥
this is epic.... yeah !
I need this vs in every metal genre...
What an amazing collaboration and thoughtful comparison, I loved the thematics and you guys are fantastic! Would love to see more, going right to the old vs new school video!
Shark fin inlays on that orange jackson look dope af
Nice, putting Hellripper in there.
Hell yeah! Tight AF playing. These videos are great for discovering new bands 🤘
Fuck yeah, absolutely live for these. You’ve introduced me to so much new music in a genre I adore that I cannot thank you enough
i had the pleasure of seeing enforced live in 2022, they absolutely fucked ripped. their riffing is so slayer inspired, it's great
The collab we've all been waiting for.
WOOOOH WHAT A COLLAB!!!!!
Great video! Glad to see Crisix made it into the compilation.
Holy fuck I love holy Moses! Who knew the German was gonna bring the heat with the German thrash bands!
Great comparison video and special thanks for having that much german thrash in it! 🇩🇪🤘🏻
Damn, the old school riffs are so much better its not even close. Other than HellRipper!
Great vid & collab guys! Props for including Spiritworld
So, technicslly this is a conversation between a grandpa and his grandson. To me this means its not a competition but a great historical dialogue❤
Old school all day long and all night long... F*ck, I'm getting old
Nice!! It's all good, but I grew up, started listening to metal in the 80's, so I definitely have to go with "then".
🤘🎸🥁🎶🙏
The newer stuff definitely has it's metal core and djent influences.
Under a pale grey sky we shall ARISE!
Some great picks there.
Old school wins by far though the last riff of the future seems to scratch the each. 😎🤘🤘🤘 Most excellent video. 👈
That good old Sepultura was the best thrash metal band I have ever listened to
I recently discovered Enforced and am really digging some of their stuff!
This is a great channel. I even appreciate the looks you give each other like " is that al you got" great stuff and riffs, and like the different guitars on your channel
Great collab and nice riffs! 🤘
Thank you for introducing me to Hellripper!!! I'ma go check them out RIGHT NOW!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
DAMN! the guy do it near dark by holy moses
respect.
Most of the 90s stuff required two functioning fingers at the fret. I know, I was there, I played stuff. I still like it.
Thrash will always rule 🔥🔥🔥
I'd add The Way is Narrow by Iron Age (even though that song isn't really new) and For the Horde by Exmortus, love that super fast technical intro riff.
Enforced rules!
Wth I wasn't even subscribed.. well I know I am now.
Conclusion : old school Thrash Metal has better riffs (way more catchy, better written....). Thought, the two guitarists are excellent !!!
We have modern thrash bands? Where have I been?
Thrash has been back for nearly 20 years now. All the old guard back to making bangers and young bands popping up all over the place.
Wow I'm stuck on what I remember from 90s. Will check out all those bands.
@@woodward_alan Here's a good list to get you started:
Evile
Havok
Warbringer
Power Trip
Lich King
Gama Bomb
Bonded By Blood
@@Neo-Midgaryes! Thanks
Bro check out the last two albums by Warbringer
Enjoy the concept. Find it to be a bizarre choice of riffs though, especially from yesteryear. I guess you are going for obscure stuff.
As a fan of punk and hardcore, I tend to gravitate toward the older stuff as you can see that it is really influenced by that stuff but some newer stuff is still cool. 2:18 - 2:52 KILLER TRACK BY @EVILE 🤘🏽🔥

I fuckin' prefer the "then', but now is cool too. Very cool Jackson v. Is that the kvxmg?

WHY NOT BOTH? Killer picks and playing from both of you, as always.
Great video!!! But I'm sorry, but i'm not sure if i hear much of a difference style wise? It all sounds sick but i'm not sure i would be able to differentiate...
Hell yeah!

Old, New? I just hear a lot of kickass riffs.

Old School songs so much better Then. The riffs a great on both though
how much of that is down to nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses rather than the actual melodical and technical composition. you tend to like things you grew up with
How about a Black Metal one?
All the riffs in this video are awesome, and it's a great way to discover new songs or go back to old classics.

What’s up! I recently came across one Russian thrash band called DAREDEVIL and their song ДАЛЬШЕ БУДЕТ ТОЛЬКО ХУЖЕ. It sounds kinda old school stuff 😊
I really recommend you to listen to it
🤩
Megadeth sounds much more modern, fresh, and smoother than any other band from a current stage. Also, the influence of black and death metal, of which I am not a fan, is very audible.
The newer thrash has sick tone man! Which amp did you use to achieve that?
The "now trash" stresses me out.
