  • Hi guys!
This is the quick and easy step by step process I used to learn riffs and runs. This will work for any riff or run for any song, no matter how complicated or difficult! The more complicated it is, the more practice it will take; that's all!
Here's some great riffs and runs exercises from some great fellow RUclips teachers:
Eric Arceneaux: • Voice Training: "Riffs... (there are 3 parts to this!)
Aussie Vocal Coach: • RIFFS & RUNS Vocal Exe...
If you'd like to take one-on-one voice lessons with me, send me a message here! www.katecosettevocals.com/sch...
Please let me know what lesson videos you guys would like to see next!
    Happy singing!

      Hay
I watched your video (singing in a nutshell) and I was wondering should I start learning how to breath first or learn the vowels??
And as u said it's necessary to learn both breathing and vowels perfectly (or near perfect) before trying to learn placement, so my question is how do i know when I'm good enough? Like is there a metric or something??
      Last question i swear 😹😹
Are the topics u mentioned in the "singing in a nutshell" video apply to all genres of music? I mean I'm not trying to sing like Adele or Beyonce, my music taste is a bit different! More like "Declan McKenna" or "The Big Push".
Big thanks for sharing this with us❤️❤️

Hi! Thanks for checking out my videos, means a lot!!
So for the breathing and vowels - I’d learn breathing first, then vowels, if you wanted to choose one to go first. Firstly because breathing is learned much faster than vowels. (But you can honestly practice them both at the same time, since they’re very different from each other). What you can do is just separate your practice time into, say, 10 minutes of breathing and then 20 minutes of vowels, etc etc.
With breathing, you’ll know when you’ve got it down when you can breathe from your diaphragm (so making your stomach move, not your chest and shoulders) at will. When you can either stand or sit upright and breathe, making your stomach move outward, then you’ve got it! One step further is being able to do this without consciously thinking about it. As long as you can sit or stand upright and not have to think too hard about how to do it, then you’ve got breathing down. (This took me a few weeks, maybe a month of daily practice, to get down pat.)
Vowels: so it’s the same kind of idea - when you are able to sing with the vowel mouth shapes without trying hard to do it, or always having to watch yourself and consciously think about it, then you know you have your mouth shapes down. After you practice these (very often if you can - and this can take at least a month or two to really get down) you’ll notice that first it’s not as tiring on your muscles, and then you’ll find that you do it out of habit without having to actual think “what vowel should I do” or “how do I do this vowel?”. I always say near perfect because that’s all you have to shoot for. As near as you can get, and you’ll feel what’s right by what’s comfortable and what sounds good. So when you get to that place where you can do them well without thinking about them, then you’re ready to move on! Really use that hand crutch, where you use your hands to make your mouth more tall and narrow. That’s soo helpful, so use it as much as you need as you practice. You eventually won’t need it.
And lastly, yes! This applies to all styles of music! What I talk about in that video - breathing, vowels and placement - are the bare basics of all singing. Think of them as the soil/dirt that you’re planting a garden in. You can plant whatever you want once you have the soil all set up - same thing with taking these basics of singing and applying them to whatever genre of singing you’d like!
Never worry about too many questions, that’s what I’m here for! 😁 I do offer (even just one time) voice lessons online if you needed any more help! But my breathing video and my vowels video have everything I used to learn these skills myself!
Let me know if that helps and if you have any other questions!

      Thanks for the request!!
I made a video recently called Everything You Need to Know About Singing (in a nutshell), explaining the 3 basic components of singing, which are breathing, vowels (mouth shape), and placement. Great, clear tone is pretty much the result of achieving all 3 of these components, but it resides mostly in vowels.
Having good tone comes from having great breath support (so breathing from your diaphragm), and having a great mouth shape with lots of space when singing (vowels) for that air to circulate well enough to create that crystal clear tone that Adele has. I’ll link both videos here, and I really suggest making sure your vowels are very, very solid, and you have lots of space! Right away you’ll notice an incredible difference when you start to open that space. 😁
      Singing in a nutshell: ruclips.net/video/RlnrtKlrNdU/видео.html
      Vowels! : ruclips.net/video/JCgwjBmlHjc/видео.html
Check those out, especially the vowels one. Let me know if this helps you or if you have any questions with it! If you need more, I’ll definitely put a video together. 😁
