  • How To Hold Long Singing Notes - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    When most people think of holding a long singing note, they assume this simply means that this individual has a very large "gifted" lung capacity and therefore can sustain long notes from the amount of air they have at their disposal.
    While some of that may be true, it's not quite true.
    The more air one uses, the more we "dry out" our vocal cords.
    In this video we explore "compressing" or "holding back" the air which enables us to hold long notes and not dry out the cords in the process.
    For fear of sounding redundant, but it must be said, this ability to sustain these notes must come AFTER a strong command of diaphragmatic support.

    I think, particularly for fairly new singers (me about a year ago) there is a tendency to over sing as well. We wanna completely open up and just let the sound come out. When you get a bit more experienced particularity in Opera but in anything anywhere near complex to sing you sometimes need a strategy. Apoggio, compression etc.

    HI Ken! Can you please make a video about singing lower?
    I feel like you only make videos about high singing when a lot of us want to improve our lower range too
    I can go down to a C2 in chest voice (without false chords) but I feel like my lower notes don't match the rest of my chest voices quality
    Also can you show us a warm up routine for lower singing because sometimes I'm not comfortable dropping my larynx and it feels forced

    Great analogy! Talking under water and holding air back... Is it the same idea on higher notes (lets say F#4 for low bari). As long as you take care to have the relaxation response, open throat and not raise the larynx, the sensation should be similar for higher notes?

  • @DavidHKMusic
    @DavidHKMusic 4 года назад

    Yeah, my issue isn't so much the breath but mostly if I'm doing my own background vocals I find it hard to hold sustained notes (especially without vibrato) without going off pitch. I end up having to use pitch correction to fix it cause it sounds awful

    Hi ken! I get confused when you say you need a strong abdomen to support the air. I always thought the abdominal muscles were not to be engaged at all during singing for vocal freedom. Are you referring to the muscles like the diaphragm and intercostal muscles? Or is there a balance to use the abdominal muscles?

    Hey Ken... The concept of falsetto & head voice is confusing.... Some people say breathy is falsetto & clean one is head & some say it's other way around..... I think head voice is breathy & falsetto is clean.... I can't point which one's which... I saw ur vid but still confused... Any help ?

    • @hazardmouth
      @hazardmouth 4 года назад +2

      Falsetto is the breathy voice with not a lot of air pressure. Head voice requires more air pressure but requires you to place most of your resonance in your mask region.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  4 года назад +2

      What's the difference between head voice and falsetto?
      With falsetto you have a small gap between the vocal cords that allows a lot of air to come through, so it's a hootier sound. Head voice is a brighter, more timbral tone, with vocal cord closure, and more closely matches up with chest voice.

    Teacher. actually I've never care about vocal technique. As long as I'm having fun and able to convey my emotion through my voice. Is that a problem?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  4 года назад

      Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want longevity and to maintain your vocal integrity you should really learn correct technique. You can sing all day everyday, but if you aren't learning proper vocal techniques and practicing correctly, you could actually be embedding bad habits and harming your voice, rather than building it.

    • @scotttovey
      @scotttovey 4 года назад +1

      Whether its a problem or not depends on what you want as a singer.
      If you are just singing now and then to yourself, then it's not much of a problem however, if you learn the proper techniques, you may find yourself having more fun and enjoyment with your hobby.
      It is a problem if you want to do a two hour concert.
      Learning the proper techniques strengthens your voice and allows you to do sustained singing without damaging your voice.
      Look at it from this perspective.
      Whether doing it as a hobby or as a profession, a wood worker has no choice but to learn the proper techniques. It's the only way to produce good quality projects.
      So It really depends on how good you want to be at using your voice.
      It took me decades to develop my voice and I lost it as a result of illness and surgery. That was in 2007 and I still do not have the same control I had prior to the surgery. I also never had formal vocal training which likely would have made a big difference in recuperating my voice. So in one sense, proper technique and training will help safeguard your voice from such circumstances and enable you to recuperate from them much faster.
      In the end, it is your choice.
