It was a smart move finding Crystal a home outside of country music. That’s Loretta’s house. Crystal built her own place and did a nice job. Thanks Fil.
Her "Wrong Road Again" was one of the first songs I sang in public - in a bar when I was 15 (I stood in the lobby with the doors open to "keep it legal".) I'd forgotten all about that. I'd never heard this song by her! Simply beautiful! I closed my eyes and listened to it twice - and that second time, I heard parts that reminded me of "James Bond Theme Song" in some of those notes while at the same time being "mildly countrified jazz". Such a different voice from her sister - both Queens of Country but in very different ways. I've been singing a lot of country again (thank you stupid karaoke weddings this summer!) but now I want to do some experimenting with jazz! I've been out of the loop lately and have to say, I have MISSED your "And there we have it!" Glad to be back!
Loretta steered Crystal into pop music, so she wouldn't be compared to Loretta, and because Loretta said Crystal's voice could do things that hers couldn't.
I first heard Crystal Gayle in 1977 when she recorded the song "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" Crystal did a wonderful take on "Cry Me a River" Ella Fitzgerald recorded the original verson of the song that I like as well. Thanks Fil, for your insightful analysis.
Fil, thanks for the detailed analysis. Crystal was one of my favorites. I managed to have a crush on her, Linda, and Emmy Lou at the same time. Loved "don't it make my brown eyes blue."
She is one of my all time favorite singers. A massive voice and person. Boy can she hold a note and with such power and one of the best vibratos ever! Her live version of BB King's song, "Same Old Story " from her first special is absolutely amazing! Thank you for the reaction, and please do more!
I'm a longtime fan of Crystal Gayle. She is in my music collection. An amazing country singer, who also has a jazzy element to some of her music. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. It's awesome. Cheers, Fil! ✌️
I grew up listening to Crystal Gayle when my dad would play his tapes on the Olds '88 or whatever car he had at the time. I've also seen her and her great band twice! I'm more of a The Who guy, but because she brings back such great memories, I adore her too. She and her even older sister, both sisters of Loretta Lynn, are amazing performers and Crystal nails every note! I'm so glad you did this!

I've always enjoyed Crystal Gayle's voice. She is a great country music singer & is the younger sister of Loretta Lynn. She is known for her floor length hair. She had a lot of hit songs in the 70's-80's such as "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue", "I'll Get Over You", "Wrong Road Again", Ready For The Times to Get Better", "Talking In Your Sleep", "Half the Way", "You & I" etc.

I was quite infatuated with Crystal Gayle, and this began when I first heard Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue on the radio before I even knew what she looked like, but of course her looks completed the package. I saw her perform live in Morristown New Jersey in 1978 when she was 28 and I was 29. She sounded exactly like on her album, which was produced by Allen Reynolds with traditional natural techniques. She was not an extrovert on stage, but I found her charming and I was there for her singing. After the show she came out and sat on the edge of the stage and signed autographs for everyone there for an hour. She was very radiant. I asked her to sign my program, and when I mentioned how to spell the version of my first name, which is not my RUclips channel name, she looked puzzled, so I spelled it for her, except I left out an "e", but she spelled it how I said, without the "e", and when I noticed the mistake, she said she'll just stick it in where it belongs. This time there was a security guy there who was trying to get the several people waiting for to leave. One young guy with expensive cameras, said that he had come all the way from upstate to photograph her, and while he was arguing with the security guard, Crystal came out on the stage and the guard let the matter drop and those who were there were allowed to stay. Crystal loved having her photo taken, and she even asked how I wanted part to pose, standing or sitting. At one point I told her that I wasn't able to get in to see her perform that evening because the music hall was full, but I did see her the previous evening in Morristown. Hard to believe she's Loretta Lynn's baby sister. Such different performers. You would never guess they were even related by looking at them and listening to their voices and music. Another awesome job Fil. Love watching your analyses of the various artists you look at. You can tell you enjoy what you're doing and you show such a great appreciation and admiration for the skills of all the artists you look at. Your smiles and expressions are just awesome.
Your analysis of her soaring 'Cry.... me a rive". It is almost a break - but controlled. And your comments on her use of vibrato is spot on. You are also talking about her phrasing, but not without specifically mentioning that technique is excellent. Finally your analysis of her runs is very good. Great job, as always.

I love that you analyse so many artists from different genres. My Dad is a big Crystal Gayle fan and I used to sing along to Talking In Your Sleep as a young kid. Getting a new appreciation for her technical proficiency through your video.
Thank you for this analysis, Fil. I have always loved Crystal Gayle's voice...and bought all of her albums in the seventies and eighties. I know that she came from country music, but I always thought of her more as a crossover artist. I love Loretta Lynn, too...but they both have such incredibly different singing styles.
A lot of artists sing the word they are convened such as the greatest Roy Orbison when he sang crying and said the word crying he was actually crying. How many Roy did not just say the word crying but he actually felt the emotion the pathos and he wanted us to fill it along with him
Hi, fil, again I want to comment on Crystal Gayle. The song comes back to me through the day. What a great song and a great rendition. It reminds me of Lena Horne and stormy weather.
Fil, I am so impressed at the work you put into your analysis videos, and I love the fact you have no problem giving your time and honoring musicians from eras before you were even born! My Dad was born in 1920 and he married rather late so I am just 64. My sisters and I were immersed in Dad’s love of 1930s-1940s Big Band music. Just last night I was cranking The famous Benny Goodman show at Carnegie Hall from 1938, the first Big Band music ever allowed at C.H. I love Rock as much as anyone, but do you think you might ever analyze some of the fantastic Big Bands of that era? I find getting roughly 20 guys merging so flawlessly absolutely mind blowing! Thanks for doing what you do!!
My dad was believe it or not born in 1909 and I am 68. Weird I feel sometimes that I was born a hundred and fifty years ago. He and my Mom were musicians so we listened to classical and all the American Songbook stuff, Broadway musicals, contemporary vocalists etal. My musical tastes are all over the place as well. And I had 2 older sisters which covers the 50s/early 60s. It happens that my favorite music is Led Zeppelin,New Order/Joy Division, and of course I would have to add The Beatles just because. I like Benny Goodman too, but I love Fred Astaire's singing. Just charming.
Fil, thanks for the great analysis on Crystal. She is one of my favorite singers in any genre. Most of her songs had a jazz vibe more so than pure country. Interesting that Loretta was a great friend of Patsy Cline, and Crystal's voice is more like Patsy's than her sister's.
Wow, Never expected to see Fil will doing a video on Crystal Gayle. My all time favourite singer. Watched her concert back in the 80's in Hong Kong and then 90's in Pasadana in LA. Hope to go for her concert again. Knowing she is actively doing concert in the USA but wish she will come to UK so I don't have to fly to USA. Great job!!!!! Thanks P=Fil
So enjoyed this break down of Crystal's voice - so interesting to understand exactly how she is singing and great explaination Fil. She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. She sounds so different to her sister Loretta and I always felt it a shame, that Crystal didn't really get the same recognition as her sister.
@MagicalMukhina. Loretta garnered more recognition because she was a trailblazer for women in country music. She was the first Female country singer who could actually headline her own show, and not be just the token girl singer who had to take a backseat to the male singers. She also kicked down doors because of the subject matter of the songs she wrote - from a woman's point of view, which was unheard of at the time. Crystal is a fantastic singer - she just doesn't have quite the resume as her older sister. Since there was 19 years difference in their ages, it makes sense that they would sing differently than one another. Also, Crystal wasn't known for her song-writing ability but she certainly made up for that with her amazing voice and stunning beauty.
Crystal, Ann Murray, ONJ, Ronstadt and, to some extent, Dolly to all sang Countrypolitan aka, the Nashville sound. Ray Price and Lynn Anderson were two stars who rose thanks to that genre
What hit was Krystal Gayle known for? She used to live near my home town. That's what I knew her for and her near ankle length hair. I think Ricky Bob had a tee-shirt with Krystal Gayle on it. 👍😉. She was a very impressive singer! I like this singer music separator machine. I can really hear the vocals. Fil can really imitate all the singers well IMO. Way to go! It's not easy to do! 👍.
I remember her singing "Don't it make my brown eyes blue " and thought she had a pretty voice. I enjoyed this song as well and did not know Loretta Lynn was her sister. Great analysis Fil!
Love Crystal Gayle. She makes my brown eyes blue. Just one thing Fil, you said she only does the ccry me a river on the first one but looking at the chart the other two crys have that distict u-turn just not as broad as the first cry. Great video as always.
Check out Julie London's hit with this song. Wonderful bluesy, jazzy songstress, she herself said she didn't have much of a voice. . .but she's most enjoyable. A striking beauty, as well. Like Doris Day, a singer who became an actress. 🎙
She definitely was pop-country. There was a good bit of pop-country in that time period. And there was a lot of crossover, whether they leaned more pop, or leaned more country. Crystal was not all that successful being crossover with only one crossover hit. But she had many country hits.
You may also be interested in listening to these Crystal Gayle songs. Total opposite of this one.... Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For Too Many Lovers Some Day Soon - LOVE the music, particularly the guitar, on this one Nobody Called Today Midnight in the Desert - this is one where the music speaks volumes and the vocals are just a compliment (imho) I can listen to this over and over just for the music. Ready for the Times to Get Better
I was so excited to see this! I feel like she isn't given enough acknowledgement. So talented.
One of my favourite female singers. Such a sweet, velvety smooth voice and yet with power when she needs it. She is truly in a class of her own.
She has an amazing voice and radiant presence. Wish there were more like her now.
Crystal is so jaw dropping good, we need more like her today!
Awesome! My father played lead guitar in her band back in the day!

Crystal, Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt are 3 unique and special female vocalists of the 1970s.

What real country is - a great singer and nicely dressed women men in suits. Just pure voice.
Crystal is amazing. Her version of the song "Cry" is the best. However for Cry Me a River, Ella F's version on her album Clap Hands... is the best.
Her "Cry" is amazing, the best by far.
Brown Eyes Blue
Amazing
Love her! She's so good!
Fil, I love your videos. And your smile 😁
Crossover, and evident.
Helpful vocal technique explainer.
Fil, this was an amazing video. 👏
Well done!
Very nice
Love Her! And Lorretta Lynn! And my fav...Patty Loveless. I believe they are all related from Kentucky.
Beautiful🌹
I remember her singing "Don't it make my brown eyes blue " and thought she had a pretty voice. I enjoyed this song as well and did not know Loretta Lynn was her sister. Great analysis Fil!
Love Crystal Gayle. She makes my brown eyes blue. Just one thing Fil, you said she only does the ccry me a river on the first one but looking at the chart the other two crys have that distict u-turn just not as broad as the first cry. Great video as always.
Crystal belongs with the best
Check out Julie London's hit with this song. Wonderful bluesy, jazzy songstress, she herself said she didn't have much of a voice. . .but she's most enjoyable. A striking beauty, as well. Like Doris Day, a singer who became an actress. 🎙
A Julie London track. 👍🏼
That brings back memories of being a very young girl and just being amazed by her voice and especially her hair. 🤣
lol I know.. Cher’s hair took a back seat after Crystal came on the scene 😆
I know just the album cover you’re talking about.
That hair was a mile long!😁
Crystal and me have something in common, she has floor lenght hair...and I have my hair all over the floor, unfortunately little bit on my head 🤣😂😃
I had no idea she could sing this way. Thanks Fil…..
I haven’t heard her in many many years.
Amazing voice ♡
Thanks! Of course Julie London's version comes to mind... Maybe, maybe not?
Let’s here it for the piano backup ! Love this version.
Condolences to Crystal Gale on the passing of her sister, Loretta Lynn.
Wow. I'm glad I saw this. It's a great song. Btw, I agree with what you said about voices in country music. Meat and potatoes voices in that genre.
Yes, I like your description "regimented rhythm."
My God you have to analyze what was going on with Ozzy during the halftime show at the football game Thursday. There’s no way he sounds that good.
She definitely was pop-country. There was a good bit of pop-country in that time period. And there was a lot of crossover, whether they leaned more pop, or leaned more country. Crystal was not all that successful being crossover with only one crossover hit. But she had many country hits.
❤️
Wish you’d do a Todd Rundgren analysis. His vocals always blew me away.
He's here somewhere!
It's hard to see the pitch lines on your pitch monitor thing
Wow, great analysis! Please consider reacting to Dr. Viossy on You Tube doing Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement on electric guitar-epic!!

Too Many Lovers
Some Day Soon - LOVE the music, particularly the guitar, on this one
Nobody Called Today
Midnight in the Desert - this is one where the music speaks volumes and the vocals are just a compliment (imho) I can listen to this over and over just for the music.
Ready for the Times to Get Better
Crystal gale and Diana Krall have my favorite versions of this song.
One of my top 5 singers, have every album/cd.
Why have you not done a performance of Lynn Anderson???
You should cover Connie Smith. She's one of the best voices in country music history
