I think the abilities and access to recover are great changes. Also, padding up its defense stat makes a lot of sense considering octillery is a literal tank pokemon. But, I think that's where we should cut things short. Not every pokemon needs to be great, and Octillery only needs a little push to have a more defined role in casual play.
I like these changes, though I think Protean would be more fitting than Adaptability. You could also lean into its tank-inspired design and give it Mega Launcher, or an variation of it that also includes Bullet moves (moves that are blocked by the Bulletproof ability).
either it would be quawkability 2.0 water edition or it would be a baxcalibur, or gholdengo or maybe it would be a solid lower tier mon like uh. toxapex

Good ideas! Maybe Octazooka was something I should have covered; in the future itll be nice for me to cover more niche moves that could really have an impact on viability for a Pokemon

I think its signature move definitely needs reworked. Octazooka is such a cool concept for a very flawed result. I think giving it a 100 base power would make sense and not make it too unbalanced. Keep the chance of lowering accuracy to 50 and it could be a sort of water type mirror to stone edge. Reduced accuracy high power move with (different but) powerful secondary effects. Combine that with Adaptability and itd make for a worthy signature move. 3. Skill link is good and makes sense, but as another commenter pointed out, i think mega launcher would be more useful. Its based off of a tank, so i think it should maybe have more powerful shots rather than more accurate shots. Another ability it could make use of is Gooey or Weak Armor, sorta emphasising its octopus side more with gooey and a cool thematic blend with weak armor (maybe not good for competetive, given its very lackluster base speed, but i care not for comp) 4. I love these kinds of videos where people take bad pokemon and give them an overhaul. It just gives me a deeper appreciation for the mon, even if gamefreak doesn't buff them in the future.
Totally agree, I wish it got an evolution. I generally wont take evolutions into account, however, as the videos primarily revolve around fixing an existing bad pokemon. Giving a bad pokemon an evolution wouldnt "fix" the base form it originally has!
Man there are so many viable/thematic options for octillerys ability its kinda hard to choose you have analytic skill link mega launcher bulletproof protean and probably others too
i made a platinum romhack and my light rebalance of octillery gave it a +10 to each attack and +5 to hp, but the main change was to its signature move, octazooka (i dont care if other mons can get it, if a mon was made with a move as its signature, it is still a signature move). instead of being an accuracy dropping move, it has a high crit chance, 80 BP, and 100 base accuracy, meaning it can use it wtih its sniper ability to have a lot of crit potential. also helps that i buffed most moves to their gen 5+ incarnations where possible.
I think buffing its base stats 480 to 540 ıs a bit to much,I think just giving it recover and buffing it defences by 10 and the abilities can work for him,and maybe something like a new signature ability that buffs the chance of accuracy lowering moves by 20%.I know ıt only learns ıts signature move octazooka in this state but a chance to lower targets accuracy with a %70 percent ıs pretty wild and balanced.So I think buffing ıt by 60 base stat total is so much.
Thanks for your feedback Arson! I wanted to make it strong and viable to compete with other bulky water types, such as Milotic or Slowbro, so the changes I made to its stats would hopefully reflect on that!
All you need to do is give it back its beta design, where it’s got the little helmet and its tentacles are curled into tank treads. It was a much more coherent design than “normal red octopus”
Honestly yeah. The beta designs would’ve saved us from so many years of “the fish evolves into an octopus, because duh” memes. …because it’s a revolver evolving into a tank.
Adaptability and skill link are great choices for abilities. Overall the changes have a good direction, they fit the design and it feels like the kind of buff gamefreak would actual add to the game. I don't think it'll be competitively viable because the game is just that power crept.
I think if they just rework Octozooka to be a better Hydropump and lowered it’s speed Leaving him at base 11 and throw those points in Hp And if Gamefreak cares enough Change Sniper to give him regenator This small changes leave him a very comfortable spot It can be a randomly powerful Pokémon to abuse Moody in VGC and a decent lower tier pivot option While I apreciarte your changes They fail to give him a Niche Recover means nothing if you don’t have the bulk and resistances to back it up And if your proposal is giving him a different typing and a big stat buff At that point just give him an evolution After all those trades are just Araquanid but with less bulk and a more awkward speed tier Water Buble is a water type adaptability with Water veil all combined And while you might appreciate Octilery’s strongest coverage It doesn’t mean anything when you realize Araquanid can 2 hit Ko a bulky Tapu Fini if it gets the defence drop of Liquidation A better team probably will have Grass and Fire coverage and almost all water types have ice So unless the team REALLY needs the electric and water coverage I don’t see a reason to use Octillery However I’m glad you took a good view at this goofy dude It was such a cool Pokémon and I built a VGC Moody team as he is one of the strongest users of the ability

I'm going to always steer away from giving these bad pokemon an evolution... at that point youre not really "fixing" the bad pokemon, youre just making it an underwhelming NFE pokemon. I like to look at things in a vacuum when it comes to designing these mons, with them and only them in mind :)

I'd keep Sniper on Octillery, but change Octozooka's effect so that it always crits with 60 BP, similarly to Frost Breath or Storm Throw. This would give Octazooka an effective base power of 135 before STAB.
I still think that his signature move, Octazooka, should be buffed, ok, It lowers Accuracy of the target, but this doesn't justifies or 65 base power or only 85% Accuracy, 70/90, respectively should be ok for a move that can lower the Accuracy on 50% of the time.
i would reduce his speed by 10 points to make better use of Trick Room, and put it in his HP to make him more bulky, or his S.Atk or Atk to make him a wallbreaker. Maga Launcher would fit him too
I agree!! My newest video im releasing today actually addresses what level a pokemon evolves at to reflect its new buffs :) ill be taking this into consideration from now on!

I think buffing it's attack stats is a bit too much. Remoraid evolves at level 25, and it would have base stat of 530 with these buffs.
