- Tartarus was arguably the most iconic top 1 demon in Geometry Dash's competitive history. Not only was this due to its difficulty, but also because of the sheer length of its reign on the peak of the demonlist, nearly lasting two years before a rated level would be seen as definitively harder. In the aftermath of it's reign, some levels had their difficulty re-assessed, and the resulting levels that dethroned Tartarus were unexpected to say the least. Today, I will show you the story of the levels which tried to dethrone Tartarus, and which ones were successful in their own ways.

Edit 4/26/23: I didn't think this video could become outdated like my others but let's just ignore the Slaughterhouse part of this vid LMAO.
For those who haven't heard yet, SpaceUK got exposed for botting basically everything, including Slaughterhouse's verification, and Doggie wouldn't beat it until months later.
Two levels I could have included as well are Graceful and Crystal Edge. In Graceful's case, it was considered around Zodiac difficulty up until very recently, when I was already in the editing process for this video, and as for Crystal Edge, I haven't heard many opinions on it to ensure whether it is actually harder or not (and i kinda forgot that level existed sorry lol). Neither of these levels are rated and they don't seem to have any signs they will be rated any time soon, however, so the video's timeline is ultimately unaffected and they would have both played a similar role to Diabolic Clubstep in this video (both being verified shortly after oblivion and staying unrated).
I remember being so disappointed that Graceful wasn't rated bc people said it would be top 1 or top 3 lol,

I think my favourite part about Oblivion, Hard Machine and Arcturus is that we can all say we verified the hardest demon in our own way. Oblivion was the first to be verified, Hard Machine was the first to get rated, and Arcturus is the hardest. I can't really say the same for Diabolic Clubstep though :(
Diabolic was the first of the four to be commonly believed to be harder than Tartarus so it's unique as well

Basing off the new Tartarus move down, Oblivion, Arcturus, Firework, Diabolic Clubstep, Sonic Wave Infinity, Hard Machine, Graceful and (kinda?) VSC could all have dethroned Tartarus but it was undeservingly slaughterhouse

Personally I think the demon list should stop caring about rates, like still having quality standards but not having to wait for Rob to rate so demons that don’t get rated can become top 1

the swi thing was really dissapointing, the level had basically no identity other than being sonic wave 2 so it shouldve been sonic wave 2 but xanii wanted to make it "more enjoyable" (it isn't)
Oh yeah, the level that lasted from being in kindergarten to college.
Man it was exciting to see which level would actually dethrone Tartarus, and seeing that TWO levels were enough to dethrone it (with Slaughterhouse being the one to officially dethrone Tartarus, which is fitting). And the amount of misjudged and unrated levels that ended up harder than tartarus was actually outrageous

the timeline is talked about in order of when the levels started to be thought of as harder than tartarus, though I can see how that wasnt very clear, will work on that in the future
now to this dat tartarus is nearly out of the top 20
I actually verified the golden unnerfed, it’s far back on my channel but I doubt it will be buffed again
i think it should be considered either oblivion or slaughterhouse, for me I'd say oblivion because it seems unfair to exclude a level from dethroning a top 1 just because it wasnt rated until much later

What about Graceful? It could technically be considered a top 1 candidate in the same vein as Diabolic Clubstep. It was verified in July 2021, but to my knowledge the ILL/ULL considered it easier than Tartarus for some time. Today, though, it seems the ULL places it higher than Tartarus, meaning it could have technically (excluding Oblivion) been the hardest at some point.
This is one of my favorite GD documentaries, though. Could also be interesting to look at other situations, like the levels that could technically have dethroned Bloodbath (e.g. WcropoliX never being rated, KrmaL's Phobos now being considered harder on HRR) or Bloodlust (e.g. Lucid Nightmares being considered harder now, Thinking Space being beaten around the same time as Zodiac, Death Corridor Z never being rated).

Graceful is overrated
Graceful being considered harder than tartarus is only a much more recent change in opinion, and back when I wrote the script it was only considered around zodiac difficulty at most, if it was included it likely wouldv'e had a similar segment as diabolic clubstep since it has still never been rated.
This video definetly needs an updated version, mostly because of the fact SWI got moved above tartarus and the one who we do not say his name
Fun fact: of the the 11 levels above it, all but 3 of them, Combustion and Edge of Destiny and Deadlier Clubstep

I remember trying to convince the two gd players I know IRL that Dice88 was the best player at the time but they wouldn't hear it (This was before space, nswish was still #1). I still believe that, for a period, dice was the best GD player.
No space was already the best player by far even a few months before slaughterhouse, I still remember how quick he would beat top 10s even after "quitting" the game

yes and no, though he did verify it legitimately without noclip, speedhack or macro, he was playing on banned fps (480) and demonlist allows it up to 360

Arctic lights should have been mentionned, it was literally verified BEFORE tartarus, and yet it ended up being placed below it, but eventually on May 27th it was finally moved to it's Number 1 spot, even above Slaughterhouse and Oblivion that are considered the levels to have dethroned Tartarus.

Wouldn't silent clubstep have technically dethroned Tartarus as it was "verified" earlier, just took a long time for first legit victor
silent clubstep was verified in mid 2022 long after slaughterhouse was verified

Not that anybody asked, but The Hallucination is probably not included because it was rated/verified and placed on the list way after Tartarus was dethroned even from the top 5.

Well, The race to dethrone Tartarus isn’t over yet. Sonic Wave Infinity or Trueffet could maybe move above Tartarus or Oblivion or Hard Machine or Arcturus could get moved down. The demon list will always be inaccurate.

In my opinion, the golden was the first to dethrone tartarus. Opinions change, decode used to be really hard, then we got good at wave. The Golden was the first level to dethrone Tartarus, even if it eventually got switched.
