    • @tohaason
      @tohaason Год назад +1

      Ha! I was going to post the same thing.. saddles used to have springs. My first bicycle without any was the racing bicycle I bought when I was 13. When that's said, unless I'm riding on cobble stones I don't feel the need. I just lift slightly if I'm crossing something bumpy. As I was a tractor driver for many years I don't for a second buy the comparison to driving a tractor.

    • @zelands
      @zelands Год назад

      @@tohaason Bikes still have saddle springs, in fact I have a bike with saddle that has cushioning and springs - pretty comfy. It is my impression, that in some parts of the world people have forgot how a "normal bicycle" looks like, that it is not just sport or mountain bikes. Anyone who lives in Netherlands or Denmark for example would be very surprised to see this as a new "invention", as they are mostly standard equipment for a bicycle.

    Actually, when the wheel was first invented it was square. It was back nearly to caveman times. But, of course, it had a problem as it turned going bump ... bump ... bump ... bump ... ... ... bump ... bump ... bump ... bump ... and so forth. So, then the first improvement to the wheel was made. It was turned into a triangle. Eliminated one of the bumps.

    The ebikes with a crank based motor, Bosche and Yamaha for example, are easily upgraded with a few cable ties and some tape. They get their speed from the magnet on the wheel and sensor on the frame and measuring the cadence. However, moving the magnet to the pedal arm with some tape and inverting the sensor so it faces the new magnet position means the cadence will now be far far slower and therefore convinces the speed electronics that you're going slower than you actually are. The motor will keep supplying juice up to your ability to keep pedalling via your gear ratio. And yes, I have done this to my own Yamaha bike. The obvious downside is the motor, now producing more power eats through your battery capacity, so unless you have a decent sized battery it's probably not worth the speed improvement.

    • @robneff7084
      @robneff7084 Год назад

      Also, it might be an illegal modification. E-bikes are limited to a certain speed so that they aren't classified as motorcycles, requiring a motorcycle driver's license, etc. It depends on your local rules.

    • @spoonido
      @spoonido Год назад +1

      It might get a bit dicey to juice up a bicycle whose tires and brakes aren't designed for such speeds.

    • @tohaason
      @tohaason Год назад +1

      @@spoonido Any bicycle must be designed to handle going downhill, where you can easily go much much faster.
      When that's said, disabling the limit makes the bicycle illegal to use in most of EU at least, and around here you'll occasionally get checked by police. So a change which cannot be easily completely removed when going back on a public road make create problems. And other issues.

    In California if your e-bike can exceed 20 MPH you are required to register the bike, have a license and license plate. So using a chip to exceed the built in speed limiter is probably going to get you a ticket if caught. Basically modifying your e-bike in this way will move it into the same category as a motorcycle.

      To it's credit, the loopwheels do work and provide one of the best rides that I have ever been on, the smoothness will spoil you. How do I know this? because I have one, unfortunatly it sits quitely in my basement because the bike wheels seem to have a flaw with the carbon fiber loops and the mounting system to the rim, it fractures apart after about six months, however, the kind folks at Jelly Products did replace my wheels after the inital failure and they do still sell them for wheelchairs, however it looks like they are using different materials and mounting hardware for those. Shame... 😭😭😭

    The Polar Plugs seem…dubious. It’s got to generate enough heat to be felt through your grips, which are generally some sort of rubber or foam, materials that are pretty good thermal insulators. But not so much heat that it starts to break down the grips. And in most cases the bars are aluminum, a really effective conductor, the rest of which are exposed to the air. So I would expect them to suck a lot of the heat out into the air, rather than into your hand, unless the bars were dangerously hot.
    And they’re not going to do anything to protect your hands from windchill, so you still need gloves that at least block the wind. Not to mention brake levers can get _cold_ in winter.
    Seems to me that if you want to be able to wear lighter gloves in winter, pogies are a more effective solution , and don’t require recharging.

    Overriding the chip on an e-bike will more than likely void the warranty.
    If the loop wheels are heavier then why are they "better" for folding bikes that get carried about or wheelchairs where the extra weight will cause the user to tire faster?
    Last on isn't a bike so much as it is a maths exercise.

    • @robneff7084
      @robneff7084 Год назад

      Void the warranty and possibly break the law. A powered bicycle that can go above a certain speed (depends on your locality) is considered a motorcycle, requiring extra lights, driver's license, etc.
      Loop wheels might be better for comfort. Same reason mountain bikes and fat-tire bikes became popular for city use. Definitely not for efficiency.

    Looks interesting and has some useful applications, but... isn't bicycling supposed to be a form of recreation (sport) where you do it to be self-empowered and perform actual physical exercise (use your body)? It's like renting a segway to go mall shopping, i.e. just another way to become increasingly lazy and self-entitled. Just hope it has cup holders for your Starbucks Grande Frappuccino! Zzzzzzzz.....

      Sometimes bikes are the better choice even if you have a car. I have a car and motorcycle, rode 500+ miles on my bicycle this month. 🤷🏿‍♂️

      They’re for people who: like to get exercise, have had their license suspended, have a medical condition that prevents them from driving a car, are too young to drive, students who aren’t rich but need to get around while in school, or for people who to prevent pollution, or would just rather no spend the money on a car.
