I feel like I am not sleeping at all and that happened with my previous insomniac episode but when I look at my apple watch in the morning I realize that I have slept 9+ hours, I agree that sleep quality is minimal and I feel super tired but that reassures me that my brain and body are taking their ´needed ‘ amount of sleep. Thanks again for your videos.

Hi Really happy to help. Yes this is such a hard thing to take on board when struggling - I was convinced that I was barely sleeping at all but I never felt sleepy so it was so strange.
I'm still thinking through and researching that analogy / hypothesis but logically it seems to make sense why the brain will do this. Glad it seemed to explain it well. Joe

Thanks for this mate, Iv tried srt before but it didn't help at the time and a big part of that was because I just couldn't understand how restricting my sleep could help me sleep longer. My insomnia started with a drawn out stressful situation and what you have described about being conditioned into this not awake but not asleep either is exactly what iv tried to explain. What you have said makes so much sense now. Iv started srt again this week and this is exactly the motivation I need. Thanks so much

Happy to help! Yes often I think the hardest battle I have is convincing people to try the behavioural changes in the first place and for long enough to start seeing results and an understanding of how they can be helpful and how the brain works gives people the confidence to give them a go.
Then once people see results, even if they are just small to begin with they are far more likely to keep going down the path as they have proved to themselves that they work. But yes that's a huge part of the battle, just starting and i'm glad i've given you the confidence to do that. So yes, give the sleep window a go and try and stick to it at least two weeks without looking or asking for any results, they will come!

Hi Joseph. Last night I could of sworn I was awake but had the same hallucination type thoughts you had described. All night I could see a slide show of random images when I closed my eyes but was able to open them whenever I chose and also was very aware of the bedroom and the time. Does this seem like paradoxical insomnia to you? I’ve been wondering why I’m not falling asleep at work today! Although I do feel bloody awful haha.

Hi Maggie, thanks for your message and sorry for the delay. So yes this sounds like half asleep half awake type pattern. True paradoxical insomnia however is different. It's when people say I literally never sleep! It's a sleep disorder that you you would have had a long time and occurs every night, rather than just occasionally, so your description sounds like this fragmented, poor quality sleep pattern that I describe in this video yes.

    great presentation - thanks
speaking of primal minds - my mind can't stop seeing spiders in the background (those strange door handles on the doors behind you) - out of the corner of the eye

Sorry about the weird door handles.

Hello, is there a video where you explain how to even fall asleep at night? I feel like I can't even do that because of bad association with my bed. I would really appreciate any help or tips. Thank you always!

    • @InsomniaTalks
      @InsomniaTalks  11 месяцев назад +1

Hi Lisa, so I always lead with behavioural rather than thought pattern changes (the sleep window / stimulus control) as it is very very hard to help people think there way out of insomnia without them first seeing improvements.
So I work on the mechanical / physiological aspect of insomnia first with these two things to re build the sleep drive and pattern of sleep.
This eventually gives people sleep no matter what and with that comes the psychological leap that they can sleep and there confidence very quickly is re built - this takes away a huge amount of the anxiety around sleep.
PLus if you are reducing time in bed then the opportunity to lie in bed awake getting anxious and stress massively reduces so the association of the bed being a place of worry and wakefullness starts to unravel (this is also the point of stimulus / counter control)
There are things you can do in bed such as distraction techniques (simply repeating the word the in your head to prevent the brain from catastrophizing as it can't do two things at once) and the paradoxical intention techniques (good this and INSOMNIA and it should pop up) but I would say the behavioural changes are the most helpful thing in the first instance.
On my program I love using written exercises to changes peoples thought patterns as well.
      Thanks, Joe

I'm really suffering with insomnia at the moment. I'm lucky if i can get 2 hours without waking. I might go back to sleep but it's sporadic, sometimes 20 mins each time. I also suffer extreme body jerking or ticks (not sure what it's called) or why I'm doing it, but it will wake me as im falling asleep. I'm at a loss as to what else to try ?
Also my family don't really get it and get irritated with me if i nod off during the day (unintentionally) and maybe miss plans we've made, etc. Ive even stopped driving as i don't feel its safe.

Hi so what you are experiencing in the night time are called hypnic Jerks - harmless but extremely distressing, they are due to poor sleep quality: More info on them here:
      ruclips.net/video/qSUzxBFf-3Y/видео.html
In order to fix your insomnia - start with a sleep window where you reduce your time in bed (sounds counterintuitive but it's extremely effective and also do counter or stimulus control (where if you are in bed becoming anxious / stressed you either leave the bed or sit up in bed and read etc) these should be your first steps just to re build your pattern of sleep.
You will find how to do these and loads of other help for when you are just starting on the right journey to overcoming insomnia on my playlist - New to the channel start Here:
      ruclips.net/p/PLZCxSx-clg_iQVf41w8-GP4lQxIa88xHk
I would highly highly recommend you binge watch this playlist.
The last 3 videos on it are all to to with bedtime restrixtion, these will be the most effective in the shortest amount of time.
      Joe

I don't fear one sleepless night but i fear if I had 3 4 sleepless nights in a row the symptoms will go on the roof 😢 . Please help

What do you do when you don't sleep because it's proven to be unsafe to do so? My ex broke into my house in the middle of the night months ago and I haven't been sleeping since. I already struggled with insomnia due to a violent childhood. I've tried every drug on the market and my doctors have been ignoring me up until I told them I'm struggling with suicidal ideation

    • @InsomniaTalks

Hi, so really there are two problems here the insomnia and the unsafe environment. The brain wants to keep you safe, it's its primary function so you will struggle to sleep until you feel safe.
So anything you can do to get your confidence back in the safety of your house, alarms, window locks - bars etc etc I don't know if you are renting or own so naturally it depends what you can do but somehow feeling secure again in your environment should be looked at first.
Then once that is done I'd advise working with the behavioural and thought pattern change techniques to get your sleep back on track - i'd start with my playlist here for that... ruclips.net/p/PLZCxSx-clg_iQVf41w8-GP4lQxIa88xHk
