Kasparov has a legacy to uphold. He is considered arguably the best chess player ever.
Although he would realize that it is only a social game in a social setting, he would still want to play well amid all the current chess elite who are in the room. And I bet every one of those elite players were thrilled seeing the great man playing chess once again, albeit just a blitz game.
And they would know he still possesses a very high caliber of skill. And quite possibly, after some intensive training to get him up to speed, could beat everyone in the room. Just look at his recent spectacular performance against Nigel Short.
People who criticize him for being serious are being too harsh. Remember, this game is being videoed. Hundreds of thousands of people will watch it. But anyway, after watching it again, I hear him reply in a joking manner right at the end of the video. So he doesn't mind too much.

  • @jeffgreen3376

To all those who are complaining about the other players making noise and commenting, well it wasn't a serious game. What they are doing is called kibitzing and it's a common practice in coffee house games and Washington Park blitz games. Kasparov was not amused though. He was taking it seriously, as his reputation is always on the line. He is still expected to win, even at his age.

At 7:20 after Kasparov trades the pieces, Yasser waits for some time before recapturing the bishop on f1. Probably was calculating along the lines of pushing the pawn c5-c6 attacking the knight and creating a pass pawn but then realises it leads nowhere.
Probably that was the only brief moment in the game when Yasser thought he had counter-play. Quickly realising it doesn't work and draw is the only way out.

Kasparov is always so completely intense over the board, one wonders if he even has the capacity to just "enjoy" a no-stakes game. The fact that he is retired no doubt only adds to his inability to "enjoy" a casual situation. It is probably that no-nonsense "killer instinct" that separates the likes of Kasparov from a very accomplished player like Seirawan. Certainly, to go from chess to Russian politics in the age of Putin takes some pretty big balls. It is well above the spiritual resources of the average chess-nerd to challenge a brutal and deadly tyrant. Bravo Garry. I myself at least excuse your humorlessness.

Notice the beginning of the video.
Everyone laughed and amused, telling jokes and talking.
Only Gary Kasparov continues to sit in front of the board. Serious face. He's focused. Looking at the black tools, as if there was no one around him.
    Kasparov prepares mentally for battle.
    At most he smiles quietly.
That's how you act before a game.
That's how you win a battle even before it starts.

    • @LvJols
      @LvJols 8 лет назад

Shame on the noisy crowd, I like Garry always respect the game even it is an informal one.He is the best amongst of all world chess champion without an iota of doubt. Kasparov has constantly promoted the game; he has done more than anyone to popularise chess in modern times.
