When this song came out I was walking with my girlfriend then in Manhattan by Central park, I heard the song from afar??? Getting closer???? To our surprise it was about 15 people on skates dancing and rolling out of the park. The guy with the boombox playing this song stopped skating, and placed it in the middle of the road. And started to dance around it with everyone else, in the middle of the road 4 lanes. Cars stopped didn't beep nothing and we just were like OMG bliss. NOBODY BEEPED. The song was just about to end the guy picks up the radio and the 15 people just skated down the side street and nobody said SHIT! Life was just better then, it was a mix. And we enjoyed each others company! 80's RULE God Bless
To be in New York at that epic time is so special. Wow. Jealous. You've described to me (an English teenager at the time) what it was like. I dreamed to be sitting on one of the walls outside the old tenement houses (which now go for millions) watching break dancers etc all day long. 🤣
One thing about Janet she has had some amazing people that helped shaped her career. She can give a lot of credit to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for many of her songs. Then Tina Landon who worked with Janet on most of choreography in her videos.
There's a special MTV series called MTV's timelines with Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and Janet Jackson 4 of the most historically iconic musical performers of their times if not all times who have and still make impacting influences in pop music culture.
This is what Paula Abdul said about this video: "There was only one edit in this entire video. Otherwise, it was all one take. It was very, very, very labor-intensive. I worked with Julian Temple, who was the director, and we brought in [legendary choreographer] Michael Kidd. At the time I think Michael was in his late sixties, and it was an honor to be able to work with someone who was around during the MGM classics, who understood what we were trying to do. We brought him in to work with us to really make it seamless, and it was incredible. "There were so many performers in that video, and just being able to get every scene knocked out and timed perfectly… oh my God, we probably spent an entire day just mapping it out, without a camera at first, and then an entire day working with the steadicam operator. We used an entire soundstage on the Fox lot. There were so many moving parts to it. It was a lot of rehearsal; I think we had four days altogether on the soundstage. I had a ton of extras, character actors, fire hydrants going off at the right timing. It was insane! But it was so rewarding, and every member of that video - from production to every single extra to every dancer - felt like something huge was accomplished. It was big."
Alice Cheung: I think it was filmed to look it was only one edit, but its edited a lot actually. Janet was inspired by a film Julian Temple directed where the opening scene was all one take. There is a horrible edit of when Janet is on the balcony and she walks into her house at the 1:24 mark. It goes from the set to a soundstage. Look in the upper right hand corner and you can see the backdrop of the stage. I am surprised no one noticed or was it intentional?
@@mrbrownroyyal There's another when she slides down the stair banister, she just appears in the middle of the street lol, that one was pretty obvious to me. They sort of hide the cuts with swift camera movements and strategic obstructions
@@SynphamyMusic Hey! I just re-watched that part and you know what? I never notice that was an edit until you said it. Thats interesting because in all the years I've watched it I never noticed when her feet hit the ground it was two different takes. Thanks for pointing out.
That whole 90s R&B sound got that lost euphoria sound to it.. Like, I can't imagine people having the same feeling about some of the songs today, unless it's driven by memory and not necessary the sound itself..
Here in my country, Brazil, there was a rádio station which played the weekly Billboard top 100 and I remember that when this song came out I was rooting for it to reach number one... and I was thrilled when it did! 😁 Here in Brazil it played a lot too, on the radio and in clubs!
Haters gonna hate but no other decade of music can hold a candle to the 80s. To prove it I challenge anyone to find a better talent than Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston.
Maaaannn! They KNEW how to make a music video in the 80's! It wasn't just about being half naked, shaking yo' money-maker! It was drama, theatrics, wardrobe/costumes, dancing, ACTING, it was ENTERTAINMENT!!!!
Mandi I think your assessment is correct. In this Day and Age, rolling around half nekkid , and acting like a slut in heat is what passes for music videos. And I agree the keyword is "entertainment". This video is all about entertainment, not to titilate people~
Born in 89 but my wife was Born in 87 but our families always played these songs growing up and we obviously were exposed to this. Happy to say this Song was played at our wedding ❤ This song came out in 86! 70s 80s & 90s music will last forever
G White she did in Nasty, When I Think of You and The 1987 Grammys but think those were full high heels not sure cause I’m a man and don’t know how to classify the heights.
Yessssssssss, Janet was our Beyonce, Janet was the 1st that ever did it. women in the 80's truly hade real talent, they didn't sale sex appeal they sold talent. no-one even knew Janet had a nice Body, until the 90's.... She was always dressed like a lady...... Class never go out of style that's why Ms Jackson been relevant for so long...... True Legend /Diva
I was just thinking this. Especially Saturday mornings, or driving in the car to go with my mother places. It would be on her car radio…98.7 kiss FM or WBLS New York/ New Jersey.
I was a teen metalhead in '86 when this song was new. But I dug pop music too, and this video always made me feel good. Janet's music and image had a way of reaching people that may not have naturally gravitated to this style. I even saw her live in '93, one of the best shows I've ever seen. God I miss this era. I also used to think this video was shot all in one continuous take, now all the edits are obvious but still just a brilliant video;
Only about 3 edits...when they say smile and the men appear on steps...when she goes through the door and maybe one more when she slides down the stairwell and lands. But even though there are edits, it actually was shot in ONE take them they re did a few to smoothen them out.
This is such a striking difference between the 1960s-90s and today. The potential of new acts to reach beyond the border of their genre, their core fans, and impact people who are into quite different kinds of music - whether those people are fans or musicians - that ability has practically disappeared. And it's not because "today's musicians and artists are so much worse" but because the methods of the industry, the channels of markering of today, pretty much block that kind of wide, genre-crossing breakthrough, and the mixing of different backgrounds.
@@louise_rose I agree, though there are perhaps a few exceptions. Lady Gaga has a lot of respect and genuine fans in the rock and heavy metal community, myself included. Some of them might be afraid to admit it, lol. I know there are other examples but that one jumps out.
@@fuzzo73 Also, this is a nice homage to old Hollywood musicals. The instrumentation is modern soul/r'n'b of course, but the settings, the Technicolor-style photography, the obvious "studio look" of the set and the entire tone of the film are very reminiscent of the "Singing in the Rain" and "My Fair Lady" era ( I used to watch those classics on TCM) :). Even the song , with a different (orchestral) arrangement wouldn't have needed a lot of rewriting to fit into a 1950s film. Janet was aware of this for sure; she invited Cyd Charisse for a well-placed cameo in another video around the same time.
So amazing! I love her choreographies and Broadway style (courtesy of Paula Abdul). It is such a disgrace that here in the UK she has not had a single #1 but J-Ho had 3!!
+micahaguas Julian Temple also directed Janet's "Alright" video, Janet saw a film of his and the beginning of it was all done in one take, and she wanted the video to be similar in one take even though its edited
Always thought this was one of Janet's best songs. The one take style of video was seen earlier in the "Rapture" by Blondie in 81. A really fun video but obviously dance standards were at a higher level by Janet's days. I don't recall seeing an earlier video in that style before Blondie. If you like the Jam & Lewis style you really must check out the SOS Band's first LP from 79 which they also produced. The lead singer Mary Davies can outsing Janet by a million miles. They were huge on the dance scene and had a massive hit with "Just the way you like it" a few years later. A true classic spine chilling masterpiece! Seriously, check it out if you don't know it. All great tunes though which have stood the passing of time.
Rolf Smith I dont think its about "outsinging" Janet, everyone has a different range, Janet' voice is melodic and versatile. A lot of female vocalists have voices that are basically one tone.

dancing and rolling out of the park. The guy with the boombox playing this song stopped skating,
and placed it in the middle of the road.
80's RULE
God Bless
Amazing! Wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼🙂
The Gift thanks for the memories. Being a teen in the 80's was magical-nothing like it. So much great music and plenty of fun. God Bless 🙌
To be in New York at that epic time is so special. Wow. Jealous. You've described to me (an English teenager at the time) what it was like. I dreamed to be sitting on one of the walls outside the old tenement houses (which now go for millions) watching break dancers etc all day long. 🤣
You just described a commercial
its sad because we now have these teenyboppers listening to mumble rap regaeton pop garbage..
This woman has never made a single bad song. Just impeccable taste, and prodcucers. The one artist that stays in my playlist.
One thing about Janet she has had some amazing people that helped shaped her career. She can give a lot of credit to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for many of her songs. Then Tina Landon who worked with Janet on most of choreography in her videos.
@@bh2155 I agree! Paula Abdul too!
MICHAEL JACKSON AND JANET JACKSON ARE THE GREATEST POP STARS OF ALL TIMES!!🤩
Yes yes yes
Agreed, Absolutely
There's a special MTV series called MTV's timelines with Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and Janet Jackson 4 of the most historically iconic musical performers of their times if not all times who have and still make impacting influences in pop music culture.
An it ain't even CLOSE !!!
Facts
You can see the happiness on the dancers' faces. Just such a wonderful video!
Happy 38th birthday of this video! Such a fun song and video to this day!
This is what Paula Abdul said about this video:
"There was only one edit in this entire video.
Alice Cheung wow, where did you get this excerpt on what The Paula Abdul said, its awesome!
it was done in 2 takes check 3.19
If it was 1986...I'd be going to London and Paris the next year with three friends that are all gone now.
This has to be one of the cleverest videos of its age. The work that must have gone in to ensure the seeming fluidity of how it runs is phenomenal.
Janet looks like she's on cloud nine. What a production.
Just watching her has me feeling young again.
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! They made magic for Janet.
I totally agree with on that. You couldn't have said it any better
They are the dream team
Ezekiel Major jimmy jam! Yup!

The generation of today will never know how lucky we were to have such great music of this era
They’re lucky to have easy access to be able to listen to all of it too
Janet Jackson's videos give people Joy
Who else got cheered up from this song?
LOVED IT
💕💕
Always
I'm 62 years old and when I listen to this I want to skip down the street. I know that's what feeling alive is like!
I got cheered up...
This kinda music brings back the joy i felt in my childhood pure euphoria
That whole 90s R&B sound got that lost euphoria sound to it.. Like, I can't imagine people having the same feeling about some of the songs today, unless it's driven by memory and not necessary the sound itself..
Just had my son on October 18th @ 6:26 pm and this song was playing in the surgery room. Will forever be a favorite
Denise Williams I am singing this to my baby in the womb right now
Denise Williams awww, that's sweet... thanks for sharing!
Congrats on the baby.

Another good one
Wow
Ayeeee spot light's alway's here advancing
Michael Jackson may have been the KING of Pop, but Janet Jackson was the QUEEN!!
Joshua Lowe Of course.
Innit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Madonna can be Queen, Janet is the Empress...sounds more regal!
@@Muhmawmehmaw What??
@@mrbrownroyyal No, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson are the Queens of Pop. Madonna is more rock now than pop.
Janet Jackson is and was the QUEEN of the 80s and today!
This song went to number one on the billboard hot 100 for two weeks in 1986...Just one of her TEN number one hits on that chart.
I think Janet was cheated out of RN, Control and Let's Wait Awhile not being number 1 but top 10 hits
Jewillz Daprince 86 was a DAMN GOOD YEAR
Todd Sams my friend was born January 18, 1986.
Her 1st #1
Here in my country, Brazil, there was a rádio station which played the weekly Billboard top 100 and I remember that when this song came out I was rooting for it to reach number one... and I was thrilled when it did! 😁
Here in Brazil it played a lot too, on the radio and in clubs!
This video is all about entertainment, not to titilate people~
Music videos back then were creative and had style......
ROOT S and a budget lol

Now they just have rappers saying with we could only conceive as mindless jibberish

Born in 89 but my wife was Born in 87 but our families always played these songs growing up and we obviously were exposed to this. Happy to say this Song was played at our wedding ❤ This song came out in 86! 70s 80s & 90s music will last forever
Wow, Choreography. ❤ 10 ❤
Janet was killing that choreography in a pair of kitten heels!
G White She did indeed.
Stacy Love1981 u
G White okay!!!
People better pay attention. Janet done it first!
Ms Lady forever our queen

They just don’t make this kind of music anymore. 🎉❤
I sometimes have to revisit old Jackson videos to remind myself of how much this family dominated the charts for decades.
None other, like Ms. Janet Jackson✨💕✨
The 80's and big hair. I loved it
Robynne Lynn Yess. The exaggerated bangs!!

So well choreographed

When you see Janet smile you know that everything is going to be OK.

I just 💕 JANET
I was a teen metalhead in '86 when this song was new. But I dug pop music too, and this video always made me feel good. Janet's music and image had a way of reaching people that may not have naturally gravitated to this style. I even saw her live in '93, one of the best shows I've ever seen. God I miss this era.
I also used to think this video was shot all in one continuous take, now all the edits are obvious but still just a brilliant video;
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!! It makes you feel good. That is it in a nutshell.
35 years ago, TODAY, 7-5-86, her album was #1 in the land!!
Anthony Ogans Control was released by Janet Jackson on 2/4/86 which was around the August 85 to July 86 Year.
Her first number 1 hit👑

I forgot to put the word "first". I changed it!
So amazing! I love her choreographies and Broadway style (courtesy of Paula Abdul). It is such a disgrace that here in the UK she has not had a single #1 but J-Ho had 3!!

Chubby Janet is the cutest Janet!

I never get tired of watching this. ❤️🔥
Whoever wrote this is a musical genius!
Janet, Jimmy & Terry wrote it, like pretty much all her hits
+D Wetick same goes for whoever was behind the camera
A lot of female vocalists have voices that are basically one tone.
oh so lovely. Best times, music was great. If you grew up in the 1980's your lucky, we had the greatest childhood!!!!
Yes we did!
