This is the Italian battleship Roma, a symbol of power and tragedy during World War II. Launched in 1940, Roma was one of Italy's most advanced battleships, boasting impressive firepower and speed. She joined the Italian fleet in 1942, but saw limited action due to fuel shortages and strategic constraints. In September 1943, following Italy's armistice with the Allies, Roma was ordered to sail to Malta to surrender. Tragically, on September 9, 1943, she was attacked by German bombers using new Fritz X guided bombs. Two bombs hit Roma, causing a massive explosion. She sank quickly, taking 1,393 of her crew with her, including Admiral Carlo Bergamini. The wreck was discovered in 2012, resting at a depth of over 1,000 meters. Battleship Roma remains a poignant reminder of the costs of war and the bravery of those who served.
