Good morning!! 🌻 Today we're talking MONEY! 💸 I'm sharing all my best tips from the basics, to budgeting, to how to save a lot of money in small ways, to freelancing 101, and soo much more. And if you have a major money lesson you've learned, please share it below!! Also, I'm so excited about the Be Your Best Self series launch and I have so many ideas for upcoming videos for y'all 😍 What are some topics you would want to see me chat about in this series?? Lmk, love you guys 💖
THANK YOU Jess for actually saying what needs to be said for the 50/30/20-method. I see a lot of influencers saying that if you spend more than 50% on essentials you need to cut down. Literally, where? There's still rent to be paid, food to be bought. Not everyone can have affordable housing or jobs that pay over minimum wage.
Right?? I really wanted to speak on that point because for a long time, 75% of my income was literally dedicated to just rent and bills. The only way I could have adjusted that percentage was to increase my income, which I couldn't do because I couldn't find / get a job that would pay me more than minimum wage. So I totally agree with you- where?? Hahaha. That's why I like the zero based budget, I think it can be adapted to any income- even if you're just a kid making $50 from a paper route or something. I just think it's much more realistic and practical. 🤓
In January 2021...I started out day 1 "investigating" my budget....lol. I found that I had spent $710 in Starbucks in 2020. I was shock and a little angry at myself. I only drink the blonde roast brewed and occasionally a muffin. Well this year....I bring my own coffee to work and my own homemade muffins. Money spent at Starbucks this year...zero.
After watching your video I returned $100 worth of merchandise that I kept putting off returning. I then made a call to my car insurance company to ask if they could lower my payment. Also convinced my husband to cancel Amazon Prime and HBO! Thank you so much for these tips!!
JESSICAAAA!!!! This was wayy too much quality content for one video! This is a series within itself! I'd be interested in more episodes of you going into storytelling about some of your personal experiences within these keypoints. My favorites were - Expect the Expected, Freeze your food, Check your insurance rates, and File taxes quarterly. :) (Couldn't respond to my timestamp comment, so added new comment here)
Ahhh, thank you so much!!! 🥰 This comment honestly made my whole morning!! Those are some of my fav tips too :) I think I definitely will do a follow up video(s) with more in depth personal experiences and tips diving further in. It's been really neat to read through all of these comments and see how much of an interest there is talking more about money, budgeting, saving, etc. 🙌🏼 As for the timestamp comments, I think on my channel typically they get flagged by RUclips and get moved into 'held for review' until they're manually reviewed. I checked the held for review comments tab to find your comment and approve it, but for some reason it's not there. :( The only reason I can think of why might be is that recently there's been a huge influx of weird, inappropriate, spammy comments on RUclips, and my channel in particular lol, so maybe RUclips is just automatically deleted some timestamped comments?? That's the only thing I can think of on why your comment may have disappeared- I'm sorry 😞 Usually it doesn't happen!!
@@JessicaNeistadt Thank you for responding! I wasn't expecting a reply. :) Maybe I'll try again later and add the timestamped comment. I wanted to timestamp each point and share with some people I know (they have short attention spans lol). Please let me know though if you prefer I don't! I wasn't sure if it affects your youtube monetization system.
As someone who works paycheck to paycheck without a set schedule (substitute teacher), I definitely agree that the 50/30/20 method isnt great. Setting aside all the money necessary for expenses (rent, food, etc), and then saving a percentage of the remaining money is what works best for me!
JESS, YOU´RE MY HERO! I really need this, sometimes is way too complicated if we´re growing up and no one is guiding us properly about money. Last year I started working and I spent way much that I believed, and now I make a few purchases that I´m in a bittersweet feeling. I´m still growing and learning, and in some areas I need more analysis. But like you said, in grocery area is the biggest revelation, I prefer go to buy only 1 thing that I know I am going to eat, instead of many of them and get bad. And the topic with emails, I love that in Android mobile gets divided as "personal, business and other"
Love this video! Honestly, kind of an embarrassing story - I had to cancel my library card because I was never able to give the books back on time and spent more money on the return fines than if I bought the books new ☠️
this video is amazing! I work for a financial advisory firm and this is the first time I hear one of my fave youtubers talk about the importance of finding a financial advisor who can help you along the way :) thank you Jess
For subscription service trials use a PayPal account and pay through that. Set a reminder for the day before the subscription ends and cancel the payment on PayPal. Simple! Plus the subscription trial will usually end the day after regardless.
I had a big Amazon Spending Problem until I discovered the possibility to do a monthly “gift card” for myself. If I use it up no more Amazon buys for me, and now I wait longer to buy things cause the allocated amount has to go for the whole month so I wait until later etc. and sometimes don’t go for it at all. And I scaled it down with better behavior. And It even changed my behavior towards Amazon, if I can get it somewhere else, I will. (Sometimes that’s not possible for things or brands, not generally available in Germany)
You could also try to save the money in other ways than gift cards. That way you would still have the budget but you would be able to use the money for other shops or emergencies
@@Bertiiiiii it's more about building better buying behavior, delayed gratification, and not giving all my spending money towards Amazon (always a good goal) but I started at 150 a month and I'm down to 50 now.
If you use Gmail make sure you use categories for your emails (Gmail does this automatically if you opt in) so when you check your primary emails you won't see those tempting sales.
I know this video is 2 years old, but I just found your channel and I'm obsessed :) One of the best financial tips I've heard is when purchasing something expensive to weigh out cost versus use. Example was a motorcycle. Cost $10,000 with a 3 year loan $226 monthly. If you can ride that motorcycle everyday to your work that's great- your cost per use is $12.77 per day you ride your bike. If you use it just in the summer time for fun and ride it just 2x per week - your cost per use is $138. Is it worth it? Even for purchasing things like wardrobe investment pieces I absolutely think cost vs. use. It helps!
This is the kind of content i need! Thanks Jess! I'm a Filipina and it's a struggle with meal planning especially if you're still living with your parents 😂
You are so amazing. What stores do you usually do your grocery shopping at? Do you ever stock up on water? Can you possibly do some in store grocery shopping videos? I think it would be awesome if you could show how you do your full shopping
Your emergency fund should be separate from your savings. It should typically look like six months rent in case the worst comes to pass and your lose your job. That way you still have somewhere to live while you look for another job.
This is so helpful and exactly what I needed right now! So many good tips and tricks and I will definitely be doing more research in to some of the things you’ve said. I always go shopping with a list, but I also account for distraction purchases in my budget. Sometimes I’ll find something that would be a nice treat for the week, or is on an offer that I know will end up saving me money later down the line, so I always add a little buffer to my food budget and then I know I’ve got a little bit of wiggle room!
Your content is truly informative and inspiring. Thank you for making sure that our time watching your videos, can be life changing. 💗God bless you. Keep shining!
I love this kind of content❤️ I'm in the middle of your video and it sounds like you follow Dave Ramsey/ Chris Hogan/ Rachel Cruze 🙂 There's a lot of similarities 🌸
Well food shopping is basically the only pleasure I have during COVID in Germany. So I actually stopped only buying what’s on the list but also stopped ordering food. So i guess what im trying to say is: you can save good money during a pandemic and get a head start on savings. We also managed to save an extra 600€ as students while also being unemployed for a few months. We just didn’t spend money on cinema, restaurants, takeout, museums and holidays

I agree with freezing food...it really does save you from having food going bad and throwing it in the trash. Use freezer paper too, it's so helpful!
Yes, 100%! I've saved so much food waste just by freezing 🙌🏼

You’re definitely right about lattes adding up! But fyi you mixed up your math- $4 lattes 5 days a week is only $1,040 (:
One $4 latte for $365 days a year $1,460- so the 4 and 1 probably just mixed up!
