@@ShakkIsLife what? wanting someone who you can relate to talking about a subject dominated by a particular group (in this case men) is completely fine lol
The pandemic made many Americans realize how important an emergency fund is. Most Americans cannot shoulder an unexpected expense more than $400. For the new year, I want to save 3 months of expenses!
Money management strategy that's been working for me lately ~~ whatever is left over after I contribute to my 401K, I have my employer split my paycheck into 2 checking accounts (which are connected to the same bank where my CC is). The percentage of these 2 splits coincides with the budget I've created for my bills and what I call "fun money" (anything that is non-essential). Having the two accounts as a visual REALLY helps me understand my cash flow month-to-month for various spend categories. It was also really easy to open a second checking account with my bank -- I feel much more empowered in my finances lately!
Elena you are an INSPIRATION!!! I lost my job due to the pandemic. Since then, I’ve started a RUclips Channel on Money…and it is GROWING! Thanks for all of your great content, and to everyone else…NEVER GIVE UP!!!
I was wondering if you could do a video on online safety/identity safety? I find myself getting more and more worried about identity theft and fraud as I enter my 20s; considering how much of our personal information (name, address, phone number) is one Google search away...
14:23 haha aw yes! Growing up grocery shopping with my dad, he taught me to look at PRICE PER OZ when choosing an item (usually not name brand unless you want to splurge once in a while). To this day as a grown up lady that's how I shop, great advice.
I absolutely love Aspiration! I was so thrilled when I saw that you were partnering with them for this vid. They've been my bank for years and I love all of their ethical/sustainable features, plus that APY!
Social work input here- while I super love the way you make financing incredibly accessible to your audience, I think it's important to add disclaimers in these videos that a lot of money-related problems in the US are related to the increasing wealth gap and increasing amount of Americans falling into poverty. I think a disclaimer would help your lower-income audience feel more included and listened to, and because you have such a big audience, it might make wealthier fans more aware of problems in the US to focus on/ donate towards/ vote towards.
Save for a rainy day, if you never believed in this concept; this pandemic is your lesson. No one says not to live your life, but also focus on your finances. Early planning and learning can get you early retired. But learn this stuff yourself and don't rely on the industry to take care of your money.
I felt what you said about food to my CORE 😭 It can get so annoying having to figure out THREE meals to have in a day. I need to get into meal prepping 😭😭
I love this pivot to financial literacy content. THIS IS WHAT I NEED. You’re giving me Margot Robbie in the Big Short vibes. Thank you for making this so accessible.
I've just begun using YNAB this month, and it is AMAZING. It's honestly exactly what I needed for my finances. You're right, it is tedious and not for everyone!
50/30/20... Great aspirational goal but so unrealistic for many of us! My rent and bills alone comfortably exceed 50% of my income, and that's even before doing a food shop!
I'd love to see more content about second hand, what apps do you recommend? How do you evaluate thrift stores sustainability vs. overbuying from areas which have people who depend on low priced clothes?
I had no idea that banks used deposits to fund those kinds of unsustainable projects! Thank you for bringing light to this because it makes me want to research who I'm banking with beforehand!
Another plus of smaller banks like aspiration- WAY better customer service thsn I got with Chase and BofA! Like, waittimes for phone help is way shorter. Bless 🙏

I love all the resources you provide but do you know a similar option for European citizens? I feel like in Europe is harder to find these types of banks... Thank you! Love your content recently :)
I think I have a problem w buying handmade accessories/decor. The artist side of me doesn't mind paying more bc I know how much time and effort goes into creating the products. But my broke college student self cries when I realize how much I spent. I rationalize by saying good quality will last longer than a $5 item from Target, but that doesn't change the fact that an unnecessary chunk of my money is missing right now.
I love that you make these kinds of videos! I just finished my masters in accounting and am always trying to teach personal finance whenever I can, it’s so important!
This is so weird for me. Im from Israel and living here is so difficult financially in comparison to UK Europe and USA. All of your tips are my standard living situation lol! I do love that you have more ethical banking options and more easy ways to track your money and invest it. Loved the vid anyways!
My personal top 5 tips for saving are- Going off social media and shopping platforms when you need to be more restricted with money or even trying to save up. Go to the cheapest grocery store rather then the nicer ones. Has a very big impact when it comes adding up the price gaps. Idk about where you are from but here public transportation is huge. Its a great way to reduce your carbon emissions and it saves a LOT of money!!! Try eating out less or cut it out completely and recreate your fave foods at home with friends- fun, social and saves alot. Prep you meals and drinks for your days in advance so you know you dont need to buy a snack, meal ir even a drink when you already have it.
This is so helpful! I appreciate the calmness you provide when talking about finances. It helps put the ease into this topic that is so often discussed with such anxiety.
I love the variety of videos you make! I love to travel & talk finance as well so it gives me hope that I can add both to my new channel! ❤️❤️ You’re amazing!!!
The 69% stat doesn't worry bc most people probably have the money in checkings but won't spend it. I invest a certain amount and always have X dollar amount as the bare minimum in my checkings account to act as an emergency fund so in actuality its savings
Elena - I really love the sponsor of this video and the lens on sustainability but it’s hypocritical to link your favorite CC which is a Chase card because Chase is arguably the worst financial institution for the environment and they do exactly all the immoral things you were talking about....
All these tips are super cool - I wonder if anyone can answer, how much is what Elena talks about only relevant in an American context? Like some of her previous vids about saving for retirement don’t hit me as hard bc in Australia that’s taken care of with superannuation
@@WhoopsieDaisee some jobs still give checks but I’m pretty sure most do direct deposit. Personally, I’ve never had a job that gave out checks and I do live in the US.
69% of americans have less than $1000 dollars in saving because we live in a country that does not pay nearly a livable wage, not because people have not been educated on the importance of saving
Half true, but also most people spend way above their means and don’t realize it bc we live in a society that values things like the newest tech and cars
Some of these are definitely good tips, and I generally like your videos, but when almost half of working Americans make under $15 an hour, the way you said it's "concerning" most Americans have low savings feels out of touch and like an oversimplification. Most people are being crushed by capitalism, especially during covid and ✨skipping the coffee✨ won't make a difference when you aren't making liveable wage.
Also, since you're obviously super informed about finances and are trying to educate your audience, would be great if you encouraged them to sign petitions/contact representatives about financial issues like a fair minimum wage!
Where is a good place to start to open a Roth IRA? I’ve heard you talk about it your videos and I’m ready to take the plunge! My first thought is starting with my bank.
hiii can u make a video about how to transfer cards when you move to another country and how it works basically cos im so confused and i can't understand it.
Just a tip because I’m going throw the same thing. Never lease, it’s money down the drain for a car you don’t even own. And also for purchasing a car, save for a huge down payment like $5-10k so your monthly payments are low if you want to finance a car. Never buy new new, it depreciates like a few thousand dollars right when you drive off the dealership lot. Hope that helps.
Love the video! But Chase is awful. Besides being the number one investor in fossil fuels (many major organizations and news sources have reported on this). In 2017, Chase & Co agreed to pay $55 million to settle a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against minority borrowers. They were literally letting mortgage brokers charge them more for home loans. Between 2006 and 2009 they showed “reckless disregard” for the rights of at least 53,000 African-American and Hispanic borrowers. Want to make a change, follow the money? Try Amalgamated Bank, Aspiration and Beneficial State Bank. Local credit unions also rarely have major investments in fossil fuels.
