Excellent video, i have one of these locks that i wanted to know how to open, and now i know how to use one of my lockpicks to do that clutch thing. A good day to learn something new. :)
Excellent video Paul. Love the strip down of this lock and seeing inside answers a lot of questions as to how the mechanism works. All the very best of the best to Tom and his recovery.
Roy, thank you for watching one of my longer videos. Not having a mechanical background, I always find it interesting to see what’s going on under the “bonnet”. I’m sure Tom will have seen your posting, but I will pass on your best wishes.
I’m so pleased that I was able to help you, thats the reason I make these videos. Thank you for your comments, they really do help my little channel get noticed.
On the padlocks i have that look very similar to this, I found that pushing down on the shackle instead of pulling it did bind the wheels. Im not sure why it works, but looking at the mechanism in yours here, that technique wouldnt work. Before i too bought a decoder knife, i learnt the technique by making a feeler tool from a piece of aluminium drinks can. It works a treat too.
My background is electronics, so I have problems visualising the mechanics of these combination locks, which is way I try and get under the “bonnet” if I can. Once again thanks for the comment.
Hi Have you done a video on how to open a Squire SHCB65 I just bought one and I am struggling to decode it.When I pull the button out at the side fully I can’t turn the furthermost wheels Can you shim it? Cheers Ian
Ian, I have decoded several of this type of Squire locks, although I am not sure of the model numbers. Can’t say that I’ve had a problem with them. If the button comes fully out, does the shackle open? I do have a CBW85 here that I intend to decode on camera at a later date. I very much doubt that you can shim it. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
@@sotonlock7894 Many thanks for replying so promptly. I have the code and can reset it easily. When I set the wheels to an unknown number sequence. After pulling the knob at the side as hard as I can ,the end wheel
Is tight and very difficult to turn. The rest of the wheels are slack. They are not binding up at all Comparing how to open the Abus 65,/40 Cheers and thanks Ian Is
Ian, sounds like the stuck wheel is in a gate, either the true one or a false one. Ease off the tension and that should allow the wheel to turn. If you need any more advice my email address can be found in my channel’s “about” section.
Wow never thought i would understand how a paticular lock works, let alone with this much understanding. Thank you so much for this video!
I’m pleased that you found this useful. Thank you very much for your kind comments.

@@sotonlock7894 Your videos are great Paul, long, short or inbetween.
You are awesome sir
I just got it opened by lining up with the tool like you showed then moving all the numbers back by 2 moves.

I’ve seen the technique of using a aluminium can cut to a point, but I have never tried it. Thank you for watching.
Fascinating, what an interesting mechanism.

Is it the same process for the abus 158cs/65 do you know please
No, I don’t think it is the same method.
@ thanks for the reply . Any idea how I would do that one I got please I’ve had it couple of years but forgot the code .
I’ll try and do a video on opening one. Watch this space.
Seems bypassable too using the same tool. Have you tried that?
I’ve not considered that, thank you for watching and commenting.
You can unlock it by finding the loosest spot and its opend without tools
Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I am aware of this technique being used on other locks, but I’ve never tried it on the Abus 158/50.
What is that tool that you have used please
Hello Ed, good question, it’s a tool that can easily be made from a shaped feeler gauge. I hope this helps, thanks for watching and for your comment.
I just made one with a pair of scissors and a Coke can
