I really appreciate your videos, your ideas and implementations have inspired me and allowed me to add devices and automations that have made it easier for my aging mother to control her house without having to traverse steps to turn on lights, secure the house for the night or to give the house a "somebody is home" look when she is away. Originally she poo poo'ed the idea of adding smart devices however as I have completed more integrations and made it seamless for her she adapted really quickly.

    Thanks for the update :)
    I've purposefully not got into home automation until now because of the low availability of devices with local control.
    I've started off as gently as I could with the Athom wall plug's that come pre-flashed with ESPHome. I like how Shelley have updated their lineup so I'm probably going to be using their products to control my lighting (Dimming 0-10V LED drivers and such). Ideally I want ALL my devices to be entirely cloud-free and using open protocols, I'm not massively into security or anything, I just would like to own all the aspects of my device not just the hardware. After all, enough people have been stung by proprietary cloud services and protocols being dumped by their manufacturers.

      @AdamSkobel 4 месяца назад

      @@TheHookUp I hope you are right! My other fear is that Matter is being implemented with the minimum features necessary to claim it supports Matter just to get that tag. I recently bought the Aqara U100 smart lock and I've been disappointed that the Matter implementation exposes only lock status and the open/close command. All configuration of the lock, along with information such as who/how the lock was opened appears to only be in their app, and not exposed to Matter/Home Assistant.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  4 месяца назад +1

      @@AdamSkobel I'm hoping that's more to do with limitations of the early Matter protocol rather than unwillingness for companies to expose full feature sets. Homekit has similar issues with still needing the manufacturer app for the full feature set, but it's due to the limited options available to developers in Homekit.

    Oh wow. So happy to see Aqara focusing on privacy *and* multi-manufacturer compatibility through Matter. They've come a long way from their original proprietary zigbee devices that most of us got to work anyway, albeit not well. ;)
    I bought their camera hub so I could get full functionality out of their newest presence sensor, but was unhappy to see that it still requires the Internet for multiple functions that really shouldn't need it. I was intrigued by the gestures to trigger automations and the ability to back up to my Blue Iris PC without pulling the SD card, but alas, OTA backups still need an Internet connection and it only works with default NAS devices from what I can tell, but I figure there might be workarounds I haven't dived into yet. Still, onvif or rtsp would have been nice. ;)

    This was a long time coming. After I got given an Echo DOT I bought a "smart home" outlet and was horrified to see how it worked. (I have a CS degree and 40 years experience, including large scale networks and camera systems). The lack of true security was staggering, so I set up my devices in "stupid" mode where they were effectively just fancy timers. That was five years ago; every once in a while I check the market to see if it has improved. Looks like it may finally be happening.

    I should add my own mid century modern home is completely wired up now, when I'm away my wife says its like my ghost is home controlling the house when certain actions are done "automagically". Its so much nicer to have the house setup for the way we use it. This year was the first year I put permanent outdoor lights underneath the eaves of my home. I cannot say how lovely it is to be able to set both holiday moods or casually change the external mood of the house on demand. I love the future.

    I think alot of companies pushing the cloud only strategy see that the locally controlling users are a tiny fraction of the customers (because it takes alot more work to setup) and hence a very small potential amount of profit. What they miss (which is really critical) is that that small group are who gets asked for advice from the more common users. The advanced local control users are also often the ones that build up a complete solution that inspires other people to try their hand at automating their house.

    Meanwhile they release new products, they android app for the doorbell cannot do custom recordings without massive noise/distortion, their chinese employees cannot test anything on Android phones that are sold in the west like Google Pixel or Samsung phones, they can only test things on chinese phones. They doorbell app is a mess, they should be listening to forums, reddit and feedback passed to them, but they refuse to listen. Last time I tried it was told "their engineering team cannot speak english, and there is nothing they can do about the issues I complained about" so zero feedback taken, zero effort to resolve things. Reolink has a lot to lean. Save yourself the hassle, buy Empiretech cameras that are high-end Dahua cameras.

      Curious if you think that the Dahua DMSS app is better than the Reolink app? In my experience Dahua (EmpireTech) cameras are great for blue iris but are basically worthless as a standalone system. Reolink is nice because it is an ecosystem of cameras with a very decent app. I can't comment to the Android app, but it works great on iOS.

    Govee lights for gunshots or explosions 2:56
    This would be a good gift for my son.
    He lives in Chicago [Chirac].

    "Local device control..": yay, works on isolated vlan and does not leak privacy.
    ".. via smartphone app": very not yay. 300 different apps on my phone, all insecure and all phoning home!
    Looks like I need local control uncloud app-free devices. Buy them, turn them on, teach them the ssid/psk, give them the IP of the MQTT server, and done. Sigh

      Home assistant is what you want. I see the Aqara M3 hub being ideal for people who want privacy, local control, and performance without needing the tech skills to keep home assistant up and running. I have several of those people in my close family/friend group and I imagine it's actually a pretty large market share.

    If you want local control, you first need a local control hub!!! They kind of failed to tell us that in 2023 with all the matter devices that came out in 2023...
    Like the fake Google Max hub... That did matter and thread but was not matter compliant!!!

    Looking forward to more product reviews.
    Was liftmaster/chainberlain/myq there to explain why they hate their customers so much?

      @@TheHookUp I just finally got my RATGDO and it is great. I was actually surprised how easy it was to connect to my opener and discover into HA with the ESP home setup.

      @@TheHookUpI’d be much more upset about the MyQ changes if my Liftmaster could stay connected to WiFi in the first place 😂
