It’s a great place to see where the tech sector is heading, or at least where it thinks it's heading. There were several trends from previous years that are starting to pay off in big ways, and some showstoppers that have created a lot of buzz. But what really caught my eye, and what you might have missed, ran the gamut from low light solar cells to apartment-ready home energy storage to some tech that has a direct impact on our lives and health. Along with renewed interest in…hydrogen of all things?
    Trade shows are often full of vaporware and empty promises. But this year felt different. So, what were the highlights that I think are worth watching? And what new tech surprised me most?

      Matt - as a suggestion you could investigate a huge looming issue that faces all of the modular portable energy storage systems. With the fixed home energy storage systems there are many levels of safety standards and regulatory requirements. You can't just put them anywhere - usually you can put them in a garage or outside, and even then there are many other regulatory limits - the maximum size relates to the volume of the room that they are being placed in for the garage situation. These regulatory requirements are then checked by an inspector as part of the installation sign off process.
      Your insurance company is potentially going to decline payout if it is found that your home energy storage product was not installed to code and certainly if it was never signed off.
      The problem with modular portable systems is that they are able to circumvent all this installation safety inspection and sign off. Sure the manufacturer might have use instructions but there seems to be a minefield here with regard to how this all plays out once there are a few home fires started caused by these portable storage devices.
      For research you could look at what is the installation advice provided by each product. See what liability each of the manufacturers would be willing to cover, and what insurance companies have to think about this situation.
      I predict that there will come a point in time when all insurance companies will simply state that they are not responsible for payout if you have these products stored inside your home. And impose strick limits to how many you are allowed to have in your garage.

      The choices for home power back up other than a Tesla Power wall got most of my attention. The other was getting rid of batteries in all of my remotes and other things around the house. Great video as always Matt. Thank you

      Hydrogen for mobility caught my attention. Storage in high pressure tanks is however not optimal.

      Hydrogen for transportation seems to have many problems - the biggest however seems to be one that many people don't even consider. The change from supporting a fossil fuel based transportation infrastructure to an EV will be a big undertaking and the viability of this new EV infrastructure benefits from capturing all of the potential transportation energy needs. Add H2 into the equation and you then have competing infrastrutures that compete for refuling station locations and for the vehicles but there is no ability for a customer to easily swap from EV to H2 or vice versa without a major investment, hence the two energy sources don't actually deliver any of the benefits normally associated with market competition.
      I saw this situation play out in New Zealand where I grew up. There the established vehicle fuel option were traditionally gasoline and diesel. Then in the 1980's there was a big investment to make both CNG and LPG available as alternative transportation fuels - the infrastructure cost was crazy high and at the end of rolling out all this competing infrastructure it was then realized that each fuel source ended up capturing a quarter of all the transportation vehicles. The problem was that there was clearly no clear winning fuel and the reduced useage and costs associated with maintaining 4 competing infrastructures had the result of making all options more expensive.

      I would love to not have to use batteries in remotes, game controllers, and wireless devices. It would be cool if it could be put in cell phones.

      As he said, in Europe these „balcony power plants“ (literal translation from german which is hilarious imo) are starting to take off. This year, Austria for example extended tax breaks that previously only applied for full-fledged rooftop solar to these balcony systems as well. The system cannot exceed 800 W though otherwise you would have to obtain approval. Now you can get 800W panels with mounting equipment and inverter for as low as round about 400 euros.

      Unless those (balcony) panels offer some kind of advanced efficiency, I’m thinking they’re not going to be a huge hit since a lot of balconies have major shade issues/receive little to no “ideal” Sunlight.
      Also, one would think portable camping panels (especially the latest SIGS panels) would make a lot more sense for this application.
      Plus, I can see how building management would quickly want to ban these for alleged eyesore and/or liability issues :’(

      ​@@__WJK__ I agree, obviously the balcony has to be an optimal spot to gain sunlight and also angle matters I guess.
      Not quite sure about camping panels though, for balcony application I guess it has to be a quite sturdy and withstand the elements if you don't want to constantly put it away and put it back out again. But I might miss something here.
      House management could be an issue of course. But I mean come on, a dark-ish/black panel? But yeah I can understand there is house management that has something even against that. From a liability perspective one could think of mounting an extra safety hook to the panels like the one's used in the event industry for pursuing the neighbors that safety is ensured even when the primary mount would fail.

    As someone who has hearing damage from the army and has trouble with speech discrimination in crowded spaces I would love to learn more about Orcam device. When you have hearing damage and you cant hear the person across the table from you in a restaurant you end up losing more and more places where you feel comfortable. The fact you might be able to solve that problem in a way that doesnt mean just being isolated will be hugely impacting on so many peoples lives.

      I suffer from tinnitus and have the same problem, especially in crowded environments. Being able, with the help of technology, to focus on hearing one person or small group would be awesome indeed...:)!

      Jabra offers some very affordable hearing aids. I use their Elite 75t and even that product has band shaping. Their new product is more tailored to hearing aids and is DIY setup at home. No need for visits and tiresome batt replacement.

      It could also be helpful to people with ADD, autism, and similar conditions which can sometimes make it hard to focus on a single voice. I know for me I tend to get distracted quite easily by sounds in my environment or by a TV or other screen, even if it's something I'm not really interested in (I'm in the process of getting a psych evaluation as I suspect I have one of these conditions).

      It's not only a hearing damage or I have it too, but I have sensible ears and in crowded spaces i have the same issue then people think you are not concentrated or not interested uhm !!

    I feel that this channel talks more about private houses when it comes to any home tech, and very little about dense residential construction; so it would indeed be awesome to see more videos about tech that could help city dwellers. Thanks!

      This is a US channel and what best way to show off having a bunch of solar panels than a big house in the country. Beside he talked about the balcony solar panels and those energy monitoring modules that you can use home automation to throttle back things you are not using. So there were literally a bunch of things in this short video that you could use.

      Well, I think you make a great point, but multi residential housing, which is the most common city use case, whether, tall buildings, three and four-story condo developments, or other commonwalled structures, have a lot of specifics that aren’t easily covered in such generic topic videos. This is not a criticism of the videos, they bring to us, the masses, a lot of things with more depth than we would otherwise be aware of. I think this raises the tide of public awareness and interest in development of the future in mostly positive ways, especially because of so much coverage of alternative energy sources and their development and use.
      Can you imagine the cans of worms you open when you start to explore common investments, hoa’s, mutal properties - does everyone agree on panels, cables,batteries, costs, colors, yatta-yatta! It becomes of !

      Good point, but most multi-unit residences are not owned by the residents. An owner of a home can make the decision all by his or her self to do something about energy consumption. An apartment dweller can't. If the building is a condo, a majority of the unit owners would have to agree on projects. Yeah, right, they usually can't even agree on assessments to keep things going.

      @frequentlycynical642 I think it might be true for North America (not sure tbh), but in Europe and Asia most homes are apartments owned by whoever lives in them. That still doesn't mean the owner can install stuff on the roof necessarily, or even pick specific windows, but often building residents can do things together.

      There is the obvious: Sewer Sludge = Methane. Pipe methane into a motor, ignite it -> Electricity -> Hydrogen. Similar to the methane capture from landfills. I'm guessing the news is that they have a novel way to capture and/or concentrate the methane?

      There are so many things wrong with any sort of 'hydrogen economy' - particularly for vehicular transport. Generating hydrogen is simple (if inefficient). It's the compression, cooling, storing and transportation which makes the whole value-chain unsustainable and inefficient. These companies drone on about using green electricity to create hydrogen but fail to point out that the energy losses are huge before that bit of green energy has turned any motor. It's far better to use the green energy the instant it is generated and if that is impossible, store it in batteries which is in the 80-90% efficiency range (as opposed to 2-5% for a hydrogen cycle).

      The digestion process produces hydrogen and CO2 allong with the methane. Different microbial populations can produce different proportions of the various gasses, and those populations can be altered by changing the environment or by seeding the system with specific types of microbes. The methane motor is the most reliable with our current capabilities, but you can theoretically get straight to hydrogen without much more than a bucket and any organic waste.

    You're right about the low-light solar. That really could change a lot of things, and actually convince me to go wireless on mice and keyboards finally. It's the whole "i hate changing batteries" thing that has kept me from using those devices up to now.

      You need to change batteries every 1 to 2 years, so that's an excuse rather than solid argument

      And to me it's not so much the "hassle" of changing batteries, it's that one ends up with these chemical metal casings that rarely get properly recycled = more waste.

      @@michaelmartin9022 Wired connections do have latency and in the case of mice and keyboards wireless can actually be faster (distance, bandwidth, and interference matter). One of the most popular gaming mice is the Logitech G502 Lightspeed which has a wireless connection that they claim has less latency than a wired one (so long as you don't have too much interference of course).
      I happen to have a G502 myself and I only have to recharge it maybe once every few months which isn't too bad. For things like smart sensors, smoke detectors, and remotes having to change the batteries can be far more annoying, inconvenient (if the batteries die at an inopportune time), or even dangerous (how many people regularly test and replace the batteries in smoke detectors and how often does the 9-volt get taken out to stop the annoying beep then never replaced because most people don't have extra 9V's lying around and just forget about it).

    Would definitely be interested in hearing about Balcony Solar.
    I live in Eastern Canada, and the Hydrogen topic has come up a lot here lately. In Newfoundland, they have started work on a Hydrogen wind farm with a German company.
    Newfoundland & Labrador is an oil and gas producer, and I wonder how much of the pivot to Hydogen has to do with existing infrastructure for O&G (logistics and operations)?
    Incidentally, NL also has a huge amount of renewable energy, with around 96% of the province's power coming from Hydro, while selling a lot of that energy to neighbouring Quebec.

      Here in Germany, there really is a big hype about balcony solar. These things are cheap and paid off after 3-4 years - expensive electricity helps getting there faster 😉

      Could well be to do with o&g infrastructure. The first place in Scotland to start using hydrogen buses was Aberdeen (where almost all of our o&g engineering is)

      Hydrogen is far from dead as it's a multi use medium.
      Batteries are not feasible in heavy equipment farming, mining, and locomotive applications also it can replace fossils in blast furnaces for steel manufacturing.
      Islands lacking land mass for solar can convert from diesel generators to hydrogen to produce grid scale electricity and run their cars and trucks on the one fuel as opposed to importing gas and diesel.
      Hydrogen is also a good energy storage medium for over production of green energy from solar, wing and ocean tides as well it is easily scalable by adding more tanks.
      Electrification by batteries a lone requires mining of rare commodities whereas hydrogen can be produced directly from seawater without any pretreatment processes.
      Every island nation could in time end or reduce their dependency on imported fuels period.

      I have a nice South facing gable end wall which I wanted to put solar on but couldn't get MCS certified for export purposes.... so didn't go down that route... anyone else had this problem.

    Would love to see a video on followthrough stories at CES. Not just success stories, but mistakes made as well. I feel like we're way too quick to write off missteps and challenges as outright failures without taking the adequate time to look at the lessons learned in the process, and anything to help change the discourse on that goes a long way.

      Great idea. One approach would be to look back at CES from 15 or 20 years ago and look at what burned brightly but then flamed out✻ ... and see what happened to their key concepts. Impractical? Quality issues? Badly marketed? Done better by competitors? Et cetera.
      ✻ "burned brightly but then flamed out" because we want to hear about something interesting. There are *lots* of putative products displayed at CES that struggle mightily to elicit a _"Meh"_ and truly aren't worth anyone's time.
      PS: Marketing disasters are *always* fun to dissect, but probably aren't in Ferrell's wheelhouse.

      @@southcoastinventors6583 biggest failure for high tech smart home would probably be security since at some point if your going Wan you could roughly say your house is on the internet
      linus did show a great example of smart switches which the firmware wasn't updated for a few years which can lead to broken switch or holes for online attacks at your house.
      proprietary items is also a issue when companies don't let you update devices or you need object A to get object B to work.
      other issue is when home automation requires the internet to work

    I have never seen the balcony solar before.
    It's a really neat idea.
    It's pretty clear that you could make several videos out of this one event.
    That's a cool way to get a lot of content all at once.

    Batteries getting cheaper for homes is amazing! Portable ones are exciting because I can move them from one home to another easily! If I move down the line, I don't need to have as huge of a hassle! Also, I'm still poorish, so affording a $5k system is way better than a $15k initial hurdle.

      Yeah, a $5k system on wheels is a very good temporary solution. I think solid state breaker panel + battery storage will be the future of small home backup.

      The one thing I do not understand with the home battery systems is why they are so expensive in the US compared to the UK, for most things it is the other way around. A good example is I can pick up a 9.5kw home battery for about $3500 here in the UK. Fully fitted with is under $6000 and they have been stackable for a couple of years

      Cheaper and lighter batteries have just so much potential. Imagine being able to run your entire house off batteries when electricity is expensive and charge the batteries a few hours later, when electricity is cheap (and have this all work automatically through software, without having to think about it). It would cut a huge amount from the home's electricity bill.
      Battery storage also makes rooftop solar much easier to justify, since you can use the solar energy when electricity is expensive, not at whatever particular moment your solar panels happen to be producing it.

    A transparent TV could be a good solution for a small apartment where there is no other place for the TV than in front of the window.

      If you put a TV in front of a window you will have eye strain unless you close curtains behind that.

    I like the fact that home batteries are steering away from Lithium-ion and going with LiFePO4 instead. I also like that a few companies are going the modular route, so you can buy a smaller kit at first but incrementally increase the capacity over time for less than the price of a new small car.

      Because having batteries that explode in houses is not a good look and generally there is less likely for that to happen using that chemistry

      Expect to see a further lateral move onto sodium-ion cell batteries here; cheaper to make, and even safer than LiPO chemistry cells. It's been said that sodium-ion cells basically cannot catch fire at all, even if provoked, and you can drain them down to zero energy with no harm to the cell itself, for additional safety when transporting or long-term storing the unit.
      This is a very interesting market space right now, we can expect even more rapid product developments in years to come... :)

      Lifepo4 battery has been used last 4 yrs, dont see anyone selling Lithium storage anymore for home. Main issue is cost, why does lifepo4 on a car cost $100 / KW, but the home lifepo4 cost $500 to $1000/kw. Maybe it insurance and UL cost.

    balcony solar....as someone living in London in a flat on the 7th floor with no ability to alter my power source, this is the most interesting - This is the huge market in europe - most people do not live in family sized houses, but in blocks. I would love to be able to have some solar on my balcony hooked up to mobile batteries that I can take with me when I move. Enough to run desktop, washing machine, maybe the fridge..

    The balcony solar and hydrogen developments would definitely be interesting for future videos, as they were for prior ones. I'm itching to see some of this come to market in the States.
    Meanwhile, I find myself extremely curious about the Orcam as a means of handling my anxiety in crowds. I tend to get overstimulated in large crowds. During the 2 years I worked in Manhattan, I used in-ear monitors to shut out all of the noise during my commute, which may be the only reason I survived that mess. These days it's gotten worse, and I can't handle loud restaurant settings or busy grocery stores. So while hearing aids may traditionally be for amplifying the world for someone hard of hearing, I yearn for an option for quieting the world back down. I look forward to finding out more.

      I agree.. Balcony Solar, Home backup batteries like EcoFlow, Bluetti and also Hydrogen for cars and other. Maybe with hydrogen we can get away with not having to store energy as much since batteries are dead weight in cars and take a lot of space everywhere else.. I think we will see a mix of both batterie and hydrogen in 10-20 years

      Hydrogen seems unlikely since it is not a naturally favorable storage fuel on this planet. Balcony solar are just panels at a suboptimal angle not sure what new about it.

    Really glad to see power backups for the entire house become cheaper, simpler and easier (for someone like me) to understand and setup. On occasion we have blackouts, especially during storms, that last minutes to hours and these will definitely come in handy.

    As someone who tried to buy OLED stocks in 2005, I think hydrogen just needed some time to stew (and supporting tech progressed, infrastructure, etc). I think we expected it to just magically take over when it hit the scene because it is amazing, BUT we didn't have the infrastructure to support it so it never took hold en masse.

      We would also need to have the same conversation about manufacturing the PEM or SOFC cells. They require what? Oh no, still the rare earth metals fiasco! Honestly LiFePo4 still has much more early potential for home and transportation in the next 10 years. Bosch is just trying to appease their failure in UK.

    I could definitely see H² used in marine transport as this sector uses the dirtiest type of fuel, the accidents also become disasters when it spills out.
    Also having H² transportation with exhaust recovery in desert regions would help in more ways than one.
    As far as I'm concerned, finding a way to mass produce, store and distribute green H² makes a hell of a lot more sense than batteries.

      Not to mention steel industry, fertilizer industry, and eventually all chemical and other heavy industries. Give it ten to fifteen years, and green H2 is so abundant, that the applications in transport will grow as well.

      There is so much solar energy wasted because of unavailable storage. If we could solve the challenges with hydrogen generation (efficiency and transportation) there would be plenty of applications starting in industries

      The only argument against Hydrogen at this point is the round trip efficiency - meaning the energy into a battery vs delivered. H2 generation ("charging") historically is less efficient than a LIB, mainly cause of the energy needed for compressing the gas....+ added overpotentials
      Bipolar membranes are solving some of the RTE challenges, and I hope that more progress is made in this area. That said, we have yet to find a single bidirectional device that can compete with a lithium ion battery in terms of efficiency, and its a much more challenging system to mimic what a lithium cell can do
      RTE is what defines $/kWh. If we can get it below or close to a LIB, thats the key to implementation

    I would love to do balcony solar. Unfortunately, My apartment balcony is facing South West so I only see a portion of the setting sun each day. Also, my apartment complex like many others dont allow anything to be attached or hung from the balcony rails.

      Balcony-Solar does not mean you can only put it on the balcony.
      I have seen people putting the panels in windows, or on the back-wall of the balcony.
      And there are lots of batteries that just make a good privacy-screen without screaming "solar PV".
      Even if you just charge the powerbank, you then charge your phone from with a tiny panel, it will give you a great sense of accomplishment.

      @@onebacon_ - I'm in San Antonio Texas. It's a common rule that incentivizes people to keep their balcony clean since everyone can see it. Also there are rules about what can be visible on the balcony itself....mostly only plants and furniture are allowed.

      I was thinking of this more for emergency use in apartments, like in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in New York when people had no way to communicate once their phone batteries were used up. Nobody is going to be enforcing the normal rules about balconies in that situation.

    The earbud tech is getting extremely close to the universal translator from Star Trek. Soon we will have an automated app that will translate any voice speaking to us in any language. I'm looking forward to this in the next few years. Amazing. You just showed us the directional ability of the sensors, and we're already connected to the internet translation. Only two more steps to automate the detection of who is speaking to us and cancel out the original voice, plus start the translation automatically.

I once spoke to someone for two hours with just gestures and drawing pictures. It took a while, but it worked! Even if the app takes translation one segment at a time, we can talk like we're using one-way radios, over.

      Best bet for that would be to rig up real solar panels onto your camper. Nothing is gonna beat the energy production of a rigid frame panel.

    Im glad to see more h2 talk. I think its the automakers' way of getting around the long battery charge times. We know how to fill liquids quickly into our vehicles and h2 is a nice clean battery. Now if they would only implement onsite generation rather than shipping h2 like they do petroleum.
    Shoot at that rate why not make o2 burning vehicles too, when you split water you get both. Cant go putting trees out of business by just dumping the o2 as waste 😅

      You would need around 3x more solar panels on your roof to make enough hydrogen for your car compared to charging an EV.

    When you look at how companies like Eavor are producing electricity and HIIROC is using it to split natural gas into graphene and hydrogen, and the rollout of internal combustion hydrogen engines, it starts to make a lot of economic sense to keep hydrogen on the table as a fuel source. The criticisms have been focused on intermittent renewables, greenwash about hydrogen production, andeconomic inefficiencies but this combination defeats all of those arguments. Hydrogen will outlive intermittent renewables as an energy source because it is a path forward for big oil.
