  • The Muharram Sessions are a series of short spoken word poems on themes related to the day of Ashura.
    Anger
    You’re not in control
    You feel that?
    It’s a slippery slope
    No hand on the wheel
    They’re laughing at you
You’re smile they’re looking to steal
    They hate you
And that hate how it feels so real
    They’re out of your reach
And your grip’s just begging to feel
    You’re powerless
    And that’s anger
It sits inside man like fire
    Feel that
    That constant flicker
    Let’s feel it
    Been with you for longer
Than the love of your life
    Anger, a real lover
    Feel that fire
When it kicks off its fuming
    A crack of thunder
    And you rise up lighting
    Crying
    I’m so angry
    Tears in my eyes
How do a baby’s cries grow into
Oh I wish they all die
    I wish the world burns
I wish it turns to ash
I wish my sources of hurt
    How they crumble and crash
I wish the blood flows rivers
    And turns my face crimson
I wish I could shatter bone
    And pummel flesh into submission
Oh they thought I was weak
And now they see that I am strong
They all told me what I couldn’t do
And now I sit with the pain
    I sit with the pain
    I… sit with the pain?
    Is that anger..?
    Or is it pain
    Oh it’s pain
    It’s a wound
    Somethings hurting, I never knew
And now the regret seeps in
    Was I really that angry?
    Just because I couldn’t face
    That voice inside of me?
    Crying for help
That little kid that agitated me
And all he wanted was to be heard
    O’ my Lord forgive me
    Now the anger is useful
And now I’m not a slave to it, it is to me
Now I can use it to my advantage
How my gut and my mind are empty
    Because how dangerous are men
that have not confronted their anger
    Just look at the duality
    That exists in Karbala
    One side so angry
    So much, they hated truth
They slashed and they stabbed at it
    Until it’s numbers became few
And one side was just peace
Because they had they’re anger when in need
When they saw their love surrounded
    How their swords became unsheathed
And the fumes of their anger
Made them forget the blood they’d bleed
For they’d come to terms with their pain
And what is anger but pain
    True power is not anger
But keeping that anger at bay
    For think about anger
    What is anger
    But pain?
