Excellent review! I have 77k on mine but after seeing this I really don't want to change the transmission fluid. I cannot believe Ford let such a poor design pass for the Ranger. No drain plug, no dipstick that extends to the engine compartment for periodic checks topped off with putting it where the mechanics hand has to contact the exhaust. And then, after all that the final insult is that the motor needs to be running when you check it as the exhaust gets red hot.
It really is a terrible design. I believe the reason behind it is from a marketing perspective. I was going to get some clear tube and simply drain the fluid from the dipstick hole before dropping the pan and replacing the filter to reduce the mess this job makes. Do you reckon that idea will work?
Yes draining some fluid out the dipstick hole first will make it less messy. I used Penrite (www.penriteoil.com.au/products/atf-lv-full-syn#/) You can get this from any parts store. Thanks for the comments.
@@killawattgarage Thanks for getting back to me. I've been on the hunt for mercon lv, but the dealerships are asking about 30 bucks for 1 quart which is a rip off, but I'm too scared to go the penrite option so I was thinking of ordering it in from the states instead.
Hey Mate! Great video! Very helpful. Not sure if I missed it in the video or the comments but what transmission fluid did you replace it with?? Besides for the brand what specs did the transmission ask for? Thanks in advance! :)
I used Penrite ATF Multivehicle LV. It is a full synthetic low viscosity automatic transmission fluid that meets the requirements of Ford MERCON®-LV and GM Dexron®-Vl specifications.
How regularly should this oil change be made. We are going to be towing a van around aus when this covid clears off. Would you recommend this before we head off?
The factory suggest every 240,000km which is ridiculous. I would suggest before the 100,000km mark (this is when I did mine) and then every 60-80,000 after that. I do regular towing and at the 100,000km mark the fluid was darkened but not terrible. Not sure on the km's of yours to make a suggestion but hope the above helped. Cheers
@@glennvandenberg3912 With lots of towing an updated trans cooler would be a good idea. These transmission have a thermovalve in there that prevents fluid flow through the cooler when cold. Some people tinker/remove these but I think the principle is good. Spend a bit of time looking in to your options and fluid change when you upgrade the cooler would be a great idea. Hope this helps.
Hey mate finally got around to installing the kit today. Your video was absolutely invaluable. After discussing with the trans guy I decided to do away with the valve and installed a bypass. It involved dropping the whole valve black but wasn't to bad. We off to WA next week so thanks again.
I did my auto fluid (no filter) at 30,000km, it had plenty of junk on the magnet. Funny thing was previously the auto ran at 105-115 deg c on average, now it sits nicely at 92-98 deg c even with 2-3 ton towing behind it. Only thing different is the part fluid change...Maybe mazda from new did not fill it enough? Now at 53K still same lower operating temps.
I have heard of a number of people say that they believe the boxes weren't filled from factory. The lower fluid temp is a huge bonus. Thanks for the comment.

Hey mate, this video was brilliant! Great footage and really clear commentary and steps. I'll check through the comments section to see what others are saying, but my 2017 XLT Ranger has just developed a bit of slipping in the transmission. I tow a van (1200kg) and use the sport shift mode. I noticed the slipping on the weekend while towing up a long hill in 4th gear at 2500rpm. So, I'm getting Ford to look at it next week (2 years warranty remaining), but I'm reading/hearing that Ford possibly won't come to the party under warranty and that they regard the whole transmission as "sealed". So, I'm looking into whether I can do this myself or whether it's off to an automatic transmission service. I'll be keen to check out your other videos. Cheers!
Take it to Ford first and see what they say, first. A fluid change is a good thing and 'may' fix the problem but it's an easy point for them to not honour the warranty should they see fresh fluid.
im having the same issue with my 2017 panger. in 4th gear towing a van usually uphill the tranny feels like its slipping at around 2500rpm. what was the outcome of yours?
@@pimpinwilly it ended up being a faulty exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor. It was reading incorrectly and the computer then pulled fuel out of the mix very briefly/intermittently. This is what made it feel and sound like the transmission was slipping. I had a terrible customer service experience with a Ford service centre here in Newcastle. Long story, but I ended up contacting Ford Customer Care and they were awesome. Amazingly, there is a dedicated Ranger team. When you phone the Customer Care number, it's one of the line options to select! One of the problems that led to the poor experience with the local Service Centre and then the battle to get it sorted, was that they couldn't replicate the issue in the workshop and that a faulty EGT sensor won't always produce a fault code. However, I specifically asked them if it could be the issue, but was told no. They were a bunch of douches about it, but that's another story. It turns out that faulty EGT sensors are known as an issue. Not necessarily a regular issue, but enough that when people are reporting the sort of things that we have, the EGT sensor should be looked into. Since the sensor was replaced, it's been running perfect. Sorry for the essay, but hope this helps. I might try to look up your contact info and give you a call to mention other things that might help when you go to get it looked at.
G'day Mr Killa Watt, I ordered a 'Wesfil Cooper' transmission filter kit and was surprised to see it came with a rubber gasket, not the metal gasket in your video. Would I need to use silicon as well or without at the same 11nm torque settings? Or should I reuse or re order a metal gasket? Many thanks👍
Definitely no silicon! The metal one can be reused but it's not a situation that I would want to reuse. The complete rubber one will be fine, and I would still aim for the 11Nm.
Why didn't you use an electric oil pump to suck the fluid out from the dipstick area ? Or a hand pump... That way you can also get an approximate level of the amount of oil drained.
Nice video, quick question, I have a 2013 3.2l auto gearbox ranger with 150k km on the dash. Gear changes are jerky and sometimes stuck in first especially when first driving. Drivetrain light comes on intermitently and resets after a few mins with engine off. Do you think changing transmission oil and filter would be a good idea?
Ideally it would be great to be able to drain the convertor but this is a simple drain and fill. A full flush need equipment the the average Joe at home would not have.
@@killawattgarage Hi, we have 2014 Ranger PX 3.2litres manual transmission (MT82). According to the manual its need 2,7 litres and for the auto transmission (wet) need 9 litres. Is this correct? @@MyDirtlovers The Capacity for the manual gearbox sounds about right. Sorry dont have a video on this, but it should be fairly straight forward. Look for the fill and drain points and away you go. No need to check level like an auto transmission. Thanks for the questions
Just a question. I can't loosen a 19mm screw (fill point), 'coz it's very fastened. Not sure if I have to turn counterclockwise in order to loosen this 19mm screw, any trick? Please advise.
A flush is much better but beyond on the scope of most as it needs specific equipment especially and this transmission has a thermo valve that only allows full circulation once the oil reaches a high temp. Ford list a transmission service at 240,000km so a pan drop that gives about and 70-80% fluid change and with a new filter every 100,000km is in my opinion a really good compromise any ensures longevity.

An automatic transmission has Transmission Fluid while a manual transmission has Gearbox Oil. Transmission Fluid is red in colour and very thin while Gearbox Oil is brown and thick. Unfortunately sometimes people confuse what they say. I hope this helps you out. Thanks for the question. Cheers from Australia.
Killa Watt Garage Tnx for the reply. Now I know which is which, hope you post more vids, I'm a big fan of yours, I'll be doing an engine oil change to my ranger anytime next week with your videos as my guide, thanks a lot.
If you’re doing these often I recommend buying a cheap dipstick or a bit of suitable flat bar bending it into a U shape or actually long J shape and marking the short bit with the measurement cross hatching. Then you won’t have to risk your flesh due to the idiocy of not putting a real dipstick in vehicles.
If you’re only going to do it once grab a bit of wire bend it into a J put a bit of painters tape on the short bit and use that to compare against the factory dipstick.
If it's from within the housing then its either the transmission's torque converter seal or the engines rear main seal. Either way the transmission will need to be removed.

Hello. I would like to ask for your opinion. Five months ago I send my ranger to a workshop for a major service. I did asked for atf fluid change as well. But I cannot feel any difference with the transmission performance while driving as it should be smoother than before service. Recently I watched this video and try to open the dipstick bolt cover to inspect whether the atf fluid has been changed or not but it is very hard to open the bolt like it is never been touched by anyone which make me feel curious that the workshop didn't change the fluid. Is it possible if the fluid has been changed 5 months ago yet the bolt is very tight to open and is it possible for me to inspect the fluid colour(if I manage to open the bolt cover ) so that I'm able to know whether the fluid has been changed before or not based on its red brownish colour? Thanks
Hi, typically you would not expect the transmission to be noticeably smoother so it would be hard to confirm that way. The cover over the dipstick is tricky to get to and should have been done up tight. If you are really suspicious you will have check the fluid but after 5 months I wouldn't expect it to look like new but it shouldn't be too dark. It's a tough one as there are plenty of shops that would take a short cut and not do the job you paid for but I would like to think that the majority would do the right thing. Cheers

Hey mate. This sounds very odd to me but I have just had my transmission serviced under warranty due to a slight shudder at initial acceleration. They advised me that the car may drive differently for a few days due to the gearbox 'learning'. Am I being fed rubbish or is this true haha.
Actually this is true. They have adaptive shift characteristics based on driving. If they cleared or updated the software the Transmission Control Module will have to 'relearn' your typical driving habits. I hope the shudder is gone! Stay on the dealer till your happy with it. Thanks for the question.
@@killawattgarage thanks mate. I will keep onto them. In my opinion at the moment the shudder has not resided at all. It is very minor but to me it feels like a centre bearing to me. I've got a Dec 2007 PJ Ford Ranger 5 speed Auto model and there's a drain plug in mine, must be a after market pan maybe?
I dunno if you check comments but can you please confirm the px1 6MT has does not have a oil filter?
I’m assuming it doesn’t but there’s very little information online
I've got a vacuum pump that I use for when I bleed my brakes. I was thinking of modifying it so that I can use it with a 2L bottle instead of the small 250ml container that comes with it. I was going to get some clear tube and simply drain the fluid from the dipstick hole before dropping the pan and replacing the filter to reduce the mess this job makes. Do you reckon that idea will work?
Oh and what Auto trans fluid did you end up using? Mercon LV? Where did you end up buying it from?
Yes draining some fluid out the dipstick hole first will make it less messy. I used Penrite (www.penriteoil.com.au/products/atf-lv-full-syn#/) You can get this from any parts store. Thanks for the comments.
@@killawattgarage Thanks for getting back to me. I've been on the hunt for mercon lv, but the dealerships are asking about 30 bucks for 1 quart which is a rip off, but I'm too scared to go the penrite option so I was thinking of ordering it in from the states instead.
Very well explained video. Thank you for sharing. Just curious, is this a automatic transmission?
Yes, it is
Killa Watt Garage Noted. Thanks! Cheers
Hola consulta, que viscosidad de aceite le colocan a la Ranger motor 2.2 caja 6 velocidades?
How regularly should this oil change be made. We are going to be towing a van around aus when this covid clears off. Would you recommend this before we head off?
The factory suggest every 240,000km which is ridiculous. I would suggest before the 100,000km mark (this is when I did mine) and then every 60-80,000 after that. I do regular towing and at the 100,000km mark the fluid was darkened but not terrible. Not sure on the km's of yours to make a suggestion but hope the above helped. Cheers
@@killawattgarage 240k is many KMS. I'm at 120k. Will be looking at this over the next few weeks. Do you think a trans cooler upgrade is worthwhile?

Hi. Awesome video is this the same for ford ranger 2007 3.0 turbo diesel automatic? Thank you in advance
I did my auto fluid (no filter) at 30,000km, it had plenty of junk on the magnet.
Funny thing was previously the auto ran at 105-115 deg c on average, now it sits
nicely at 92-98 deg c even with 2-3 ton towing behind it.

Very thorough, very good!
Fabulous vid mate, thankyou
Hey mate! Great video! About to tackle this on the weekend. Did you use Ford Genuine parts or Supercheap/Repco filter and gasket?
I used genuine just for the video, but I would be happy to used Repco brand
@@killawattgarage Last one I did I priced genuine against Repco and found the Genuine ford to be the cheapest option by a good margin
Is this the same 6 speed transmission that ford Everest 2.2L is using? Thanks for the video, very simple and informative
Yep, same transmission.
@@killawattgarage thanks a lot for the reply
G'day Mr Killa Watt,
I ordered a 'Wesfil Cooper' transmission filter kit and was surprised to see it came with a rubber gasket, not the metal gasket in your video.
Smart thinking ....will try that next time!
It would be a really good start. Often these issues can be fixed with a filter and fluid change
Am having the same issue. Did changing oil and filter help?
How much oil should be used for a 2019 Ranger 3.2?
Love your videos for the ranger. Question I assume it's the same for a 6 speed manual.
Is is bad to put new fluid into the pan that will mix in with older fluid still up in the torque converter?
Ideally it would be great to be able to drain the convertor but this is a simple drain and fill. A full flush need equipment the the average Joe at home would not have.
well said video and covered all required, it is a shame they don't have a drainage bung tho
Great Video, thank you. Could you kindly tell me what is the fluid capacity? I have a BT50 3.2 4x4 2014 made in Japan. Thanks.
On a drain and fill you will need about 7.5-8 L. The total capacity including the convertor is around 12L

@@MyDirtlovers The Capacity for the manual gearbox sounds about right. Sorry dont have a video on this, but it should be fairly straight forward. Look for the fill and drain points and away you go. No need to check level like an auto transmission. Thanks for the questions

11Nm or 97in-lbs
Can you please mention the parts number of the transmission filter?
Hey. Mate just want to ask its the same for the manual transmission????
Congrats on a awesome Channel 👍
thanks for the comment
Is there a way the transmission fluid can be siphoned from the vehicle before you remove the pan which could avoid all the mess ???
Yes, but you wont get it all. You could take a significant amount of fluid and reduce the mess. Insert a siphon tube into the dipstick hole.
@@killawattgarage Thanks for the advice Lad. That would save a lot of mess on the garage floor. You get my thumbs up on that 1
Just a question. I can't loosen a 19mm screw (fill point), 'coz it's very fastened. Not sure if I have to turn counterclockwise in order to loosen this 19mm screw, any trick? Please advise.
Counter clockwise to loosen. Hope you get it sorted
@Phairat Nomai. Did you managed to open the tight fill point?
Great Vid Buddy
Can you do one on the Alternator pleease
Excellent job! Do we need also to FLUSH the transmission oil? Or just a pan drop is more than enough... Cheers!

Great tip, cheers!
If you’re only going to do it once grab a bit of wire bend it into a J put a bit of painters tape on the short bit and use that to compare against the factory dipstick.
Thanks you are the best😘😘😘😘😘

Cheers
Hi Killa, tks for the well put together videos! Could I ask your thoughts on my PX2. We had the car in for warranty to fix the door hinges, not roubles with the trans, but got it back with troubles.
I even pointed it out to them as to me I feel it isn't spaced correctly due to having a lift installed. I will give it another couple of weeks tho and get back onto them if need be. Thanks mate
A lift will often cause a shudder because of the angle of the drive shafts, but it sounds like your on to it. Cheers
