There are TONS on videos about Japan. However, yours are the easiest to understand, to the point, with no frills, and for me, are just perfect. As we are terrified to come to Tokyo next month and dealing with transportation, we are at least armed with some knowledge, and it is because of your family and taking the time to educate us. So Arigato Gozaimasu!
Ah, perfect timing, I'm coming in a few weeks. This is great news as I was JUST ABOUT to book my Shinkasnsen tickets. Thanks for this very useful info! Cheers from Vancouver.
Thanks Kensho Quest. We used the Klook QR code at the Shinkansen ticket gate yesterday and as you said, it was very easy and quick! The attendant used a flexible plastic/metal frame over the scanner to read the QR code more easily. Very helpful!
When we were in Japan 3 weeks ago we used SmartEX to book the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima, then back to Kyoto and then Tokyo. We reserved Green Car seats on each trip. We received QR codes that we scanned at the gates with no issues and issued seat tickets same as what you illustrated in your video. SmartEX was easy to use and there were no issues. Even got some discounts based on how much in advance we booked. Klook seemed a bit more complicated, likely it was similar though.
I was in Japan a few weeks ago and Klook was very smooth and straightforward. The only thing that was still confusing was finding the right shinkansen platform! I also wasnt aware that the specific train i boarded did not serve food so i was hungry during the trip. Some things you just need to learn in person 🙃
Hi, thanks for the update! Yes, most Shinkansen no longer serve food. Some still have snacks. We will address finding platforms in an upcoming video as it can be very confusing. Especially when riding the Tokaido Shinkansen since it is a very long train.
Heads up to those trying with oversize luggage: I tried to book a reserved seat with luggage via klook and you won't know if you got the extra luggage until the money is taken and the seat is confirmed. If you want to cancel the booking and try again, like the video suggests, there is a cost of £4 per booking. Very poor system to have you roll the dice every time, I wouldn't recommend
I have learned a lot from your videos for my upcoming trip. Since this video mentions luggage, I do have a few questions regarding the Shinkansen and luggage. 1. Would a backpack count toward the second piece of allowed luggage? If someone in my party has a suitcase, a carry on, and a personal item (backpack)….would that be a problem? What are people supposed to do if they arrive with a third piece? 2. How strict are they with the oversized luggage? My suitcase is literally 5 centimeters over the limit, at 165 including handle and wheels. We’re going to use the JRP and I’m stressing out over the idea of trying to get the reserved seats when we’re in a time crunch to get to Kyoto from Haneda before the last train of the night. Any advice would help. Thanks!
Hi 1) no one is going to ask any questions unless you really stand out so no need to worry :) 2) oversized luggage rule should be followed because it is not safe to put that large in the overhead compartment. Since you are riding late your train will most likely have plenty of seats available unless you are traveling during a holiday. Hope this helps!
Excellent video. If I intend to spend 2 weeks in Japan, would you recommend that I purchase the JR pass for extensive train travels to the north (Hokkaido) and to the south (Osaka). Thank you and God bless.
Thank you! Yes it might be worth it if you plan to make stops along the way. We would certainly consider it just for the convenience alone. Let us know if you have specific questions
I'm trying to figure out how the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu shinkansen trains do not have luggage racks installed. I personally don't care as I typically ship my luggage or I just pack lightly on these trips. My work has an office in the Tokyo area so I just leave my extra luggage at the office as an added option lol
Hi. Just like to ask. I m trying to book one way ticket ftom tokyo to shin osaka by nozomi for 3 adults from klook apps. I was not being offered the mt fuji view seat. Instead i just vring offered a single choice of seat with oversize luggage, which i dont need. So any advice for this smll problem?
I was planning to get JR pass for my 3 week trip with an early Tokyo to Hakata leg. Why does Nozomi cost ~8000 extra for JR pass holders? A Nozomi ticket on Klook is basically the same price as the Hikari/Sakura ticket but 1 hour quicker. This is really frustrating. I was also under the assumption that Nozomi wasn't accessible to non-JR pass holders due to the wording on the JR pass website.
Hi, the reason why the Nozomi is not included is because the Nozomi is owned by a private company, not part of the JR companies. So if you buy as a single journey the tickets are the same since you are purchasing as a separate entity
Hi great question! Sorry forgot to include in video. Each person needs to scan their own. So if one person buys multiple tickets they need to share with others by downloading the QR code first then send to them.
@@KenshoQuest Thank you! Your videos have been very useful whenever we travel to Japan. Will be back in December and this will be so helpful. Thanks again and all the best to the whole family!👍🏻👍🏻
Wonderful video. Quick question: how many pieces of luggage like 10-kilo- carry-ons are we allowed in shinkansen trains? If two pieces is the allowed, will I need to reserve a seat for luggage? Would appreciate your help. Blessings
Thank you for the video! So, if I understand right, I scan my IC card to enter a station, then scan the Klook QR code at the Shinkansen gate within the station? Is there any way a Shinkansen gate would come first without me needing to scan an IC? Thanks!! 🎉
Yes, it's possible that you won't need to scan anything until you reach the Shinkansen gate and scan your QR code. The gates should have a sign above them labeled "Shinkansen Tracks".
I am traveling with the whole family. If I buy the tickets, why do I need to send them the QR code and why can’t I just scan it one at a time for them especially if they are only kids? Will Klook book my seats together? Can I choose the seat? Sorry for all the questions and thank you for posting all these very informative videos!
Hi, this is a great question and we don't have a definite answer since we haven't tried it as a family! However, in general, each person is supposed to have their own ticket, digital or not. But I'm not saying that what you are suggesting won't work. You can certainly try it. But if all of your kids don't have phones you might want to print out the QR codes and scan that just in case the gate attendant doesn't allow it. If you book through Klook they do their best to put seats together. this is usually not an issue. However, there is a possibility, such as during rush hour or during a holiday that your seats may not be together. Unfortunately, You do not get to choose your seat. There is another system that you might want to try called SmartEx that allows choosing seats. It can be a great alternative but also requires each person to have either their own IC card or QR code, which again you can print instead of using on a phone. here is a link to a video on SmartEx: ruclips.net/video/KglsSHuex0Q/видео.html A final option is to just purchase from the JR ticket office or from the machine then you can get the good ol' paper ticket.
Hi, you can no longer purchase in person in Japan but you might be able to purchase directly from the official site then redeeem at the JR ticket office. japanrailpass.net/en/ Good luck!
I booked a train from Tokyo to Osaka in August, but it is for the beginning of November. In the instructions they sent me they told me that I must print the ticket. In this case could I use the QR at the entrance door? or should I print the tickets?
Hi, since this is a new system can you check your account through the app to see if you can use the new QR code method? If not you may need to print tickets
This is not just for klook but if I buy tickets for my wife and myself what is the best way to scan the QR codes or the best way to get hers on her phone?
Hi great question! You can either forward the email with the QR code, which you can download. This can be done via the app or through a link in the klook email. Or worst case you can even print it then scan the paper qr code

I binged all your videos. Can you please make one re: travelling most of Japan 🇯🇵 on Shinkansen?
I’d love to travel from Hokkaido south on Shinkansen to Kagoshima someday! And show all the Shinkansen lines along the way. 🚝 Heidi

Thank you!
For the QR code you can either download it from the app or from the email then send it to your husband. No need to buy separately.
@@KenshoQuest awesome! thanks much!
@@KenshoQuest Glad I scanned to see if this question popped up. I was wondering about booking multiple tickets on one phone. :)
