Just spotted your video by chance. I remember the old road in use . I fished for many years at Tebay in the late 60's Used to fish a pool known locally as ,"Trough "Dub. I can confirm that you identified the troughs location whilst fishing I used to walk along the concrete embankment and have to clamber around those water chutes. that emptied into the river to continue fishing They were always in full flow even in Summer.. I knew one of the Banker Engine drivers from Tebay shed I recall him telling me they had to smash up the ice on the troughs in winter. I think they also used to apply heat somehow ,maybe paraffin lamps I'm not sure.. As a child had a couple of footplate rides on a Banking Engine from Tebay sheds up Shap. I have seen these pans from off a slow moving class 37 some years ago but was unsure as to what they were. It's a wonder that some of the troughs didn't end up on local farms as animal feeders ect,they could be still out there!!

Who know's where they went I saw photos last week of North Lancaster M6 motorway getting built through the lowgil and teary way and you can see even in early 1970s the Troughs were still there! I would imagine they get took up from that time to they put over heads on WCML on that stretch!

Very intersesting, I seem to remember seeing these troughs being in place in the 80's or late seventies when I used to travel up to Glasgow. Do you know when they where ripped up? Great video mate... Davi
There were long sections of water troughs before Mochdre (Pronounce "r"), Nr. Colwyn Bay. These troughs were opposite Sandy Cove Halt and the Station, adjacent to Morfa Ave., between Kinmel Bay and Towyn (Abergele). These troughs remained until well into the diesel era.
Another piece of historical engineering trashed away in the 60,s gosh it makes me mad and saddens me that so much was just thrown away ,wouldn’t it be great if somewhere like the great central installed working water troughs ,the thrill of seeing postal train and pick up equipment there was fantastic👍

Yeah and you know what's funny 1000's people go to that cemetery all the time to clean and look after Ian Curtis grave. But it's in big town and dose not seem be looked after like you say madness.
I can't believe you drove all the way to Macclesfield and didn't even mention the town's most famous band the Macc Lads , sweaty Betty their most famous hit was about a female stoker at the Macclesfield sewage farm pumping station, you should do a video about that. 😜
Little you know though TE here is actually genuine born Macc Lad but lived in Cumbria rest of my life and has connections to the Macc Lads band just didn't mention because that's for other day in TE world. Today we were looking at ramsbottom grave 😉
Nice vid, great to see you got the drone up. How you finding the mavic, , does'nt take long to get to grips with. How does the trough work, surely the ends must be lower than the sides, because the scoop would be lowered and would need clearance to enter the trough but would'nt the water overflow over the ends? Does that make sense?
The height of the railway line gently dips down as you enter the troughs and rises again before the end of the troughs so it doesnt matter if the fireman lowers the scoop too early or raises it too late it wont knock the end out of the troughs. The Drone is great I actually haven't really used it seens that day because still want get new device to run it off. I'm going send you email with link about the Troughs 😉

Good find, very interesting. According to the Railway Codes site, the highest troughs in Britain were at Hawes, and the lowest were at Hest Bank.

Ah. So, I guess with the troughs having a constant supply of flowing water, they didn't freeze in winter.
They froze in winter!
I think they did try to heat some Troughs to stop them freezing over I didn't know how successful they were with troughs they tried though!?

What is going on in Ramsbottoms cemetery? All the markers seemed to be broken and laying in pieces.

There is a old recording on vinyl of night time recordings of tebay,shap and further up Beattock climb of engines working hard ,
