  • My quick impression on the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III Speaker System
    I know there are a lot of debates online regarding them, I personally like them and have a lot of fun with them. I know all it's issues but if you can get a pair cheap in the used market, definitely worth checking them out for fun.
    Great for movies and games, for music, it is meh.

    I have the Bose 5.1 in my condo and it rocks the house. The low end frequency is very deep and sounds like it’s coming out of a 10” subwoofer and the highs are crisp and clear. I’m running them off my Yamaha receiver. I have nothing bad to say about Bose.

    Very nice video, I have connected the cube speakers on my computer and whatever people say, the soundstage is huge on these. They achieve a sense of 3D-sound. And for the price you pay you get a nice set. I EQ’d the treble up and it sounds very vivid now. I am absolutely satisfied.

    Denon has DSP that will make dialogue really stand out on these speakers. I still found the 535 Series III JewelCube Speakers to have better clarity on dialogue. I enjoy them no matter what audiophiles say.
    They are fun for theater.

    I'm still using Bose Lifestyle 235, a 2.1 home theatre system and it sounds great and easy to setup. I do want a 5.1 system so I'll probably upgrade to Lifestyle 650 when I'm 65 yrs. old. I don't want big speakers to fall and crush me to death when I'm old and grey. ;-P

    Some new info. The Acoustimass 10 Series V has improved drivers. They have better treble response.
    And the passive subwoofer on the AM -5 Series V also has the same improved drivers. And the bass drivers were improved in the AM-5. I can verify that the Direct Reflecting Series II does have higher frequency response.

    I also have the AM 7 that I purchased new in 95. I updated the satellites to the newer double shot cubes. The passive bass module is absolutely perfect for a bedroom. I run it in 3.1 logic with a vintage high end Sony surround receiver. The vintage Sony receiver made these sound much more natural and smooth. The Denon was too harsh for small room.

    I’ve had these for nine years, amazing for home theatre movie watching. I live in a smaller space and works perfect. The gains are always in the middle. Neighbours complain when it’s turned up. Not made for super loud music but great home theatre experience. Mine is powered by a Yamaha HTR6280 that probably 13 years old.
    The fun comes from its clarity. Perfect for those who want a clean and no obstructive setup.

    Key points you mention - versatility, fun, and affordability. Pre-owned, refinished, overstock, and old-model-year Bose products are very inexpensive, and they really are extremely versatile products. As for sound, you’re absolutely right, they produced highly biased/tuned sound, and they do not use a range of discrete drivers to reproduce accurate or full sound, but they do offer “fun” sound, which is good in environments were accuracy isn’t necessarily the goal.
    Take computer speakers; the Acoustimass 10 and 6 are actually very good systems to use as computer speakers, especially if you get them pre-owned. They’re much more pleasant to listen to than most typical computer speakers and computer surround sound systems, and they’re very unobtrusive, so I like them!

Its kind of my small Man cave😆 i even have a third theater room with the 301s and 161 with Matching center with Top of the line THX Marantz powering everything and it sounds amazing. I always tell people, sound its subjective and everyone should buy what the like and enjoy regardless of what people think and you sir have clearly showed this in your video and for this i congratulate you and agree with you 150%. They are fun to listen too🤗 i wish Bose would get back on making speakers again. I love the stuff they made🤗

    One thing that fascinates me is that is the Bose system is so inferior why do people spend so much time and energy cutting them down? I've had mine for 20 years coupled with a Sugden amp and still don't feel any need to update and yes I visit show rooms often.

    I have the Acoustimass 5 and have had them from new, they are a old speaker now, but they still sound like new, I have a large living room in a victorian house in England, which I have very high ceiling (floor to ceiling is 10ft) I have them linked to a Bang & Olufsen amplifier, the combination is really nice, I have a rich bass sound and a very vocal speakers, I can have the volume really low and I can hear every sound with clarity. I have the Bose 201 IV full system including the bose amplifier to run them in my pub, and I love them, they are perfect for the needs, very clear in sound for back ground music but they pack a good punch for weekend use when the music needs to be increased, I will say I am a fan of Bose,

    I find bose has one huge strenght, they're all in the mid-range when it comes to sound. Which makes them great for things like in-car use, where there's a noisy environment, yet you want to be able to understand what's being said on the radio.
    For computer or TV use, yes they are better than most "gaming" or integrated speakers. But for me, they can't hold a candle to even the more basic bookshelf speakers. I used to have a 4.1 set from Cambridge Soundworks, which had a very decent sound, but without the woofer, the sattelites were nowhere.
    So I went and did a silly thing, I got a cheap TriPath Class-T amplifier and a pair of Magnat Monitor Supreme 100 bookshelf speakers. All brand new it set me back about 180 Euro. The sound I got from that was leagues ahead of the Cambridge Soundworks "Bose clones".
    Upgrading to a better Class-A amplifier and a 7 band EQ, combined with adding a Magnat Gamma Sub 220A, filled in the missing lows of the soundspace.
    I don't think Bose makes good gaming speakers, because they lack both the booming bass you want for explosions, and the ultra crisp highs you need to be able to locate sounds in game. Gamers have way more in common with audiophiles in what they want from their sound, compared to gamers and music lovers.

    I wouldn't dare use them for music, not even inside an elevator, that's for sure. For home theater, however, especially as Atmos speakers, they could be a decent solution. You can install them on the ceiling and aim one cube down and the other towards the listener, which really enhances the Atmos effect.

      I don't know the ohm ratings on these tiny cubes. Assuming they are 'normal', you would just plug it normally to a receiver like any speakers. Just check with boss to make sure your receiver supports the ohm rating. You will lose the DSP feature from the bass module which is what gives it that 'boss surround sound'. Big difference. Your sub will have to cross over REALLY high cause these cubes don't go low at all.

    The Bose Lifestyle 650 is the best system to date from Bose. But pricey. Much more open and clear than even the Jewel cube speakers. Note: Bose has updated the Bose Jewel Cube & Double Shot speakers a few years ago. The 650 uses new Omni Jewel speakers and is far superior. I don’t get the fatigue with the Omni Jewel’s. The Jewel & Double Shot beam the sound to much causing fatigue. Update. I’m updating my double shot to the new Series used on the AM 10 Series V. Bose told me they did update the drivers. This seems to be a modest upgrade but they have a bit more top end and seem more efficient than the previous double shot cubes pictured in the video. I prefer my AM 7 Bass module for a small room. In that environment there is plenty of bass for a bedroom. I still like the natural sound of these for TV and movies.

    I just upgraded my living rooms TV and speakers. I used the Bose acoustimass 10 for many years, and it is exactly as you just said. I LOVED watching movies with them but found them "meh" for music. And it's not the bass, even though it's not a sub, because I listen to Rock, metal, and non-dubstep electronic, it was because of their lack of warmth with lower mids. And since I didn't have an equalizer, their was no way to rectify this except with the very limited options on my receiver. I just replaced them as my cinema speakers with the Definitive Technology procinema 800's. Not only are those things just as good with movies, but with their vastly improved lower mids and dedicated tweeters, MUCH better with music even without a full equalizer.
    I moved the acoustimass to my computer room however, along with the amp I was using and I have to say I WILL NOT be in the market for PC gaming speakers for quite a long time. Those, now 12 year old, speakers just received a new lease on life! They are hands down the absolute best damn PC gaming speakers I have every used. And since my creative labs sound card has a veritable plethora of ways to modify and equalize sound in it's software, I have tweaked them to as perfect as they are capable of. Music is still a little bit "meh" but certainly better for the tweaking. That doesn't bother me at all though because when I'm gaming all I care about are the sounds of things exploding, rifles firing, and dialogue. If I'm listening to music, it's in the background and quite anyway while gaming. Another great thing about the Bose for gaming is their size, I can fit a cube each on the left and right of my 32inch monitor and one turned sideways underneath it. As good as the procinema 800 is, it wouldn't fit like this in my computer room. The Definitive Tech has become my new King of the living room, but the Bose Acoustimass has become the new King of the computer room.

      You have a wrong perpection on what engineers use.
      First of all, multi-million dollars studios only use the best of the best and don't rely on nearfield monitors but rather on main monitors away from the sitting position.
      Secondly, crappy speakers like Yamaha NS10 are used to listen to the full mix, not for mixing and mastering since it would be stupid not having a flat response. They use crappy speakers to listen to a completed mix to determine if it sounds good or not on a worst case scenario.

    I’m wondering if they’d be good for atmos height speakers? Even in a high end home theatre - If for example you already have shitloads of speakers dominating your room.

      @TheSteppenwolf666 6 лет назад

      Thomas & Stereo I’ve also been put off the outlay and hassle of atmos just for a handful of discs for effects that are used so sparingly. The way it could be done with minimum fuss and still get properly ceiling effect is to use small satellites on speaker brackets with bell wire on a cheap 35 watt power amp with something like these Bose. Might only cost a few hundred and some simple DIY. Maybe when atmos becomes more popular I may go this route

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  6 лет назад

      I am also waiting for it to be more mainstream. It's more than adding 2 speakers, if I want to have they 7.1+ 2 ceiling speakers, I need to upgrade my receiver. Currently, most atmos receiver are only 5.1 + 2 ceiling speakers.

      hey justin i actually had two of the cube sets from my am7 mounted to the ceiling for atmos. still through the acoustimas module and it worked quite well for atmos as the recomended frequency cutoff is 120hz for atmos anyway. as thomas said they are a fun speaker but once i got a better set ive not looked back. I actually swapped the ones on the ceiling for some kef t101 low profiles because in my rented living room setup the bose were a little obtrusive givin my the ceiling height.

    Thank you for the review, Thomas. Just watched your KEF LS50W v LS50 review and listened to it on my LS50Ws. A bit later I am watching this review and I earlier switched over to my Bose Acoustimass 3 series II, which are basically a 2 channel + SW equivalent to these. I quite often each day will switch between the 2 speaker systems and clearly the KEF LS50Ws are a much better speaker system but the Bose are actually quite good given their price point and their size. My primary use for the Bose are as Computer speakers. I only use the KEFs if I am playing background music from RUclips, Foobar or iTunes while I work on something else on the computer. The Bose's size and cost are big considerations as computer speakers. I will admit I used Bose 901s for years as my main speakers so that long excursion small driver is something I am used to and have no problem with. However for more critical listening and at over 10 times the cost, the KEF LS50Ws are a much better solution.

    Bose cube is not for music lover but for cinema sound lovers.
    Bose cubes cant handle too much high frequency while using double equlizer in music mode.
    Bose cube needs a specific matching amplifier for Music lover,hard to match with any amplifier.

    100% agree with what youre saying im just like you with high end home theatre equipment i got POLK, MARANTZ, SONY ES, DENON PROFECIONAL , ONKYO, TECHNICS, BOSTON ACUSTICS. i have 1 large room theater with bigger speakers and 4 huge powerful 12 inch subs and a small room cinema with the lifestyle with the bose jewels which are smaller but more powerfull and to be honest, yes they are a lot of fun to listen too very strong and compelling cinema sound with lots of rumble to shake everything, i can hear every detail in the surround and dialogue is very clear , but they will definitely sound better if used in small room...if you put them in a bigger room sound is lost. Bose is got its own unique sound and acustics so you either love it or hate it. I love it🤣 .....i call it the BOSE BUG🤣😂🤣😂

    I use the AM 7 in my bedroom with a high end vintage surround receiver. The subwoofer fits on the bottom shelf of my audio rack. What most fail to understand is there is NO crossover. The bass module is designed to also respond to the lower mid frequencies the cubes are not capable of producing. Yeah they have their limitations and don’t produce crazy amounts of low frequencies. I don’t really care. A problem a lot of people expect is they over emphasize the low end where material was never recorded with it in the first place. I also have the 901 series VI in the living room I use for a theater system. They sound incredible and throw a huge sound stage and ample amount of bass. This was not the case until I upgraded the receiver. Buy what you like and be done with it. I don’t see the Acoustimass 10 IV that cheap anywhere. You got lucky.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

    Bueno, ahí va mi opinión...Partiendo de que no existe el amplificador perfecto, no tampoco existen los altavoces perfectos, quiero explicar como me confecciono mi equipo, el que me puedo permitir y el que me da más placer, potencia, claridad y frecuencias en todo el rango. Mi conexión actual...Yamaha AS2100 con altavoces B&W 705 S2 más un segundo par de TECHNICS SB G55, al mismo iempo, DENON PMA 720AE con altavoces Bose Acoustimass 5 serie II, pasados por un equalizador PIONEER GE 555, al mismo tiempo un MARSHALL WOBURN ,, todos estos componentes funcionan simultaneamente, a la vez todos, La fuente es un YAMAHA BDA 1060, ,,,las salidas XLR van al YAMAHA AS 2100, las salidas RCA van al equalizador PIONEER y del este van al DENON PMA 720 AE , y la salida optical va al Marshall WOBURN....Bueno toda esta mezcla de componentes y altavoces y marcas, da como resultado yn sonido increiblemente detallado, potente y sin distorsión, cada unidad trabaja con poca potencia, pero la suma de todo hace un sonido potente , muy potente. Como dije al principio , no existe el equipo perfecto, El Yamaha es muy serio y realista, pero le falta brillo, El DENON tiene potencia y brillo a montones, y el Marshall que es un amplificador de clase D, hace unos medios increibles...Con los altavoces pasa lo mismo, unos brillan mucho, (Bose) y otros son más detallados y otros mejores en los medios, La SOLUCIÓN, para mí, en mi modesta opinión, está en eso la mezcla de componentes y reultado una increible resuesta muy amplia de frecuencias, imposibles de conseguir con un solo componente o una sola marca...por mucho dinero que está cueste....Ya está...Gracias por aguantarme el tocho y buenas tardes a todo el mundo....VIVA LA MÚSICA Y LOS QUE LA HACEN Y COMPARTEN!!!!!!

    Its funny, I love good music reproduction but have never gotten into home theatre as I did many years ago purchase a home theatre set up but after a while really could not stand noises coming from behind me and sourrounding me. For me a movie or TV show is an illusion not reality so replicating reality actually spoils my enjoyment of it and I finding noises whizzing around me really distracting as it never feels natural compared to what one hears in the real world such as moving aircraft or vehicles which actually are far more subtle in real life than in movies.
    As for Bose, the company everyone loves to hate but I have to say that when out and about with my Onkyo DP-X1 I love the warm rich and silent sound my in ear Bose noise cancelling earphones give me, I just relax with the music, its a bit like listening through a lush tube amp!

The SoundTouch App works great streaming Tunein. But It’s s very source dependent. 4K Blu-ray player, great. Phono, not so good even with a high end pre-amp. @@ThomasAndStereo I know I can do that? that's not what I said, I said I see no video that explains it. That's why a lot of people go to you Utube so they can find a video where they don't have to read the manual because some manuals are very confusing.

      I know this info is too late, but I couldn't resist.
      The back plate on the subwoofer show where to connect the wires.
      one set of speaker wires runs from receiver/amp speaker outs to subwoofer ins terminals. 2nd set wires from subwoofer outs to the Bose cube speakers.

    The acoustimass bass module with three drivers go down to 25Hz. The idea that it isn’t a “real subwoofer” is plain stupid.

      I can never find measurements with bose, can I plz link. I wonder if they use dsp and transmission line design to get that.

      I have two of them. As in two of the subwoofers. And I measured it myself. In my room, of course. But it goes down to 25Hz very strong.
      They have built in amps and I’m sure they use DSP. Dr. Bose was a big proponent of equalization way before it’s time.
