    Cool idea and photos. I’m gonna try this with my 40mm 1.4 @ about 8-10 seconds and see how it works out. Thanks for another great video. 🤠

      Do it! Just maybe watch it if you go up to 10 sec. That shutter speed length at that focal length might start to see some star trails.

    Thank you, I went to Spain and it was a full moon, I used a cpl an LP filter, I've yet to see how it comes out in post. Tea drinking is more of a British than American thing isn't it. I drink earl grey and chair. But I prefer to take hot juice with me on night shoots

    Awesome photos Brent, they almost look like you took them during the day, i was very surprised to see how "bright" they were even with the CP filter. Is there a particular prime lens you would suggest for this type of work? I dont own any "fast" zoom lenses. Keep up the great videos, great tutorial on how to take Astrophotography.

    • @BrentHall

      Thanks Tye! It really depends on what you'd be willing to spend and what focal length you want. Most of the time I use and recommend the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. It's very cheap (there's a link for it in the video description) and is incredibly good for astrophotography, but that lens is too wide for a CP filter, so I'd say you might look into a 24 or 35 prime at the longest. Problem is those start to go up in price fast. Tamron has an excellent 35 f/1.8 for around 5-600, and now a new 25 f/1.4 for $900, and sigma has both a 24 and 35 f/1.4 for somewhere around 800-1000 I believe. The tamron 15-30 f/2.8 G2 is really awesome, but also like $1200 or something, and cannot take filters without very expensive custom adapter. The tamron 24-70 g2 (the one I am using) is probably the best all around, and is quite affordable, comparatively speaking, at around $900-1000.

    Great video. I'm wondering what a light pollution filter like L enhance would look like with the same kind of situation?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 года назад +1

      Idk, I've never heard of that filter before. I do have a Breakthrough photography night filter that I made a video about, but it doesn't work the same as a CP.

  • @davec28

  • @ProcrastinatorsAnon
    @ProcrastinatorsAnon 4 года назад +1

    Stumbled across your video while researching CPs. I didn't expect it to be useful for astrophotography too! Just a quick question, how did you figure out how to adjust the filter for the best effect in the dark?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 года назад

      Trial and error. It still works the same as any other time you'd use a CP, so you know that it'll work the best at 90 degree angle to the main light source (the moon), and you know that it'll take away about 1.5 stops of light, so you can calculate a good ballpark with that. Then what I do for my composition setting is I crank my iso all the way up to max, that way you can derease the shutter speed to take a faster image, which will help you see what it will look like (albeit a very noisy image) then once I get it tweaked and all set, I lower the iso and increase the shutter speed for the cleaner image.

    I guess waiting until moonset will be a good strategy?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Год назад

      Just depends on what you want. If you just want dark skies, then yep, waiting till new moon is the way to go, but if you want a nice naturally moonlit landscape and some milky way too, then a CPL is a great option.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 года назад

      No, that will make it worse. Nds have no polarization, they just make everything darker.

    Sometimes the moon doesn't rise until later in the night, can you shoot the milky way before it rises or becomes visible?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 года назад +1

      Definitely! I do it all the time. Gotta maximize those milky way days. I also go out in the super early mornings to shoot it after the moon has set, if it sets late.

    explain how a circular polarizer will make the milkyway pop more

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 года назад +1

      It cuts through light waves at a 90 degree angle, so it won't make the milky way pop more so much as it will cut through the moonlight, allowing you to see more of the milky when the moon is out.

      Brent Hall Could this help with light pollution? I live in South Florida and I’m having a hard time getting shots of the Milky Way. I usually use 1600iso for 13 seconds at 16mm otherwise it comes out over exposed. I’ve even tried 5000iso for 6 seconds at 16mm and still can’t get much detail.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 года назад

      @@tomsmith2873 I don't think that would work the same, since the light source isn't really directional, it's just everywhere out there. I think someone does make a night light pollution filter for stuff like that, but I've never used it. I'm tempted to say that Breakthrough Photography makes it. Unfortunately that's definitely one of the biggest downsides to living on the east coast.

    • @BrentHall

      I'm pretty sure I did mention it in the video, but it was my feiyutech ak4500. It's kind of an old gimbal now and I don't use it anymore, but most gimbals these days have a pan/tilt timelapse feature.
