    I think an important part of wonderland is that its theme is so closely tied to KH1, specifically the whole “going through an alien world with its own logic” thing. Its a good pick for establishing the very vital sense of confusion and alienation. If you went through, say, Aladdin first, you wouldn’t be in that position of “whats this”, you would be screaming at Sora because “Genie! He’s here what a chad take him”, like with the Donald Sora conflict. They had to pick an obscure pick, one that is basically never in the popular zeitgeist, but is still iconic and well known. However i am...some time late so ignore this as you will

      came to say something like this but you probably said it better. honestly kh1 its manga and the 356 days manga are why i like wonderland. the manga really express the feeling of being in this magical weird forest and when xion and roxas are looking up at the stars talking about how each is a world with different people living their lives while these 2 characters dont really have lives feels so lonely and yet not. it does a really good job of being atmospheric and getting the feeling across that the universe is vast. the level design having rooms with painted on skys and forests is so weird and i get why people dont like it but me as a kid just felt some kind of way about it i dont really know how to describe it but the vide is very interesting in relation to how i described the manga making me feel but before ever reading them. the sky in traverse town also adds to that feeling, looking up at the stars knowing each is another world. traverse town wonderland and hollowbastion are probably my favorites. i also love the gummi stuff in concept though the gameplay sucks. the seas between or what ever its called idr atm encompasses that feeling of the universe being so vast and how much of an issue being stranded could be so well. also makes it even more disappointing theres no treasure planet world. would be really cool if you had random encounters with pirates (not just heartless) sailing the ethereum similar to encountering monstro abd captain hooks ship though without being actual worlds.

    One plot element of Deep Jungle I love is how LONG it takes for Heartless to show up. IIRC it’s not until you do a full circuit of the place and Clayton breaks bad that they start appearing. Until then it’s just fights with Sabor breaking up exploration.
    I can’t think of any other Disney world in the series structured like this. Where you get to see the process of Heartless being inadvertently lured to a world by someone and just DERAIL the original film’s plot. In what was likely just a few hours of arriving, they were already within spitting distance of Deep Jungle’s Keyhole. Really sold how alien and dangerous the Heartless were

  • @Shoulderpads-mcgee

    I think wonderland fits pretty well for s first Disney world. Sora has been dropped into a new universe that’s alien to what he knows and understands. It kind of mirrors the idea of going down the rabbit hole into wonderland

    If anyone is actually wondering, the reason Alice is considered a princess of heart is literally because during her giant Alice stint in the books she was named heir to the Queen of hearts literally the princess of hearts. now this isn't shown in either of the Disney adaptations but it is supposedly still a background detail that is canonical which makes Alice's inclusion less of a "what the heck why is she a princess of heart?" thing

    Something unmentioned about Monstro is that the dialogue between Riku and Sora changes a fair amount if you do Hollow Bastion 1 first, since Riku is possessed by Ansem by that point. It's not the only time cutscenes change based on your order of progression but it's definitely the most significant case; it even makes it so Riku doesn't help you in Parasite Cage 1!

    22:59 Riku's excellent reaction time in this scene always kills me! It's like the creators didn't want him to react until the camera panned to his face. I think one of the things that really kills the pacing in these games is the absurdly long pauses between dialogue and moments of awkward silence when otherwise emotional stuff is happening onscreen.

    Monstro actually terrified me as a kid. I think it was a mixture between the moving eye on the world logo, the moving wall and floor textures in the chambers, and the music, which was really unnerving to me. I didn't actually complete it until after Riku 1 in Hollow Bastion, when I had a friend do it for me. I don't understand why they made the world optional considering it's a really important development in Sora and Riku's relationship, and the fact that you can do it during Hollow Bastion is just strange. Anyway, nowadays it's one of my favorite kh1 worlds (I think only Halloween Town beats it in terms of pure Disney worlds). I agree both it's ambient and battle themes are among the best in the game, and I really like the Parasite Cage for some reason. I've always wondered if it or just the heartless infesting the area in general were trying to find Monstro's heart, and what a resultant heartless Monstro would look like.

  • @nick-qb5wu
    @nick-qb5wu 3 года назад +5

    I big agree that having the sora and donald conflict on tarzan is really great. You get to see their relationship take its first few steps and its a lot of fun to see that looking back from where they are now. Also makes it feel genuine and earned and not just "ok we both good guys so we are best friends lets go on good guy quest and kill bad guy now."

    When I was living in Japan, I realized that Alice in Wonderland is surprisingly pretty popular in Japan. There’s Alice in Wonderland themed restaurants and random stuff that has the Disney classic on it. So, when KH1 came out with Wonderland, tbh I wasn’t surprised by the choice. I personally really like Wonderland world. I think works well with the game.

  • @Iranex1
    @Iranex1 3 года назад +21

    I feel like the boxy shape of wonderlands rooms could be explained in universe by the heartless consuming worlds. Obviously I don't have much of a good basis for this, but there is the fact that we see the worlds of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White at the end of the game and they have been reduced to little more than hallways with 2D shapes on the walls that vaguely resemble the worlds they once were. But of course Wonderland has not been devoured by darkness yet. Also it could just be a stylistic representation in both cases. I'm not so sure in any case but it is cool to think that even if the heartless haven't completely destroyed your world they can still eat away at it like parasites.

    • @RegularPat
      @RegularPat  3 года назад +15

      Ooh I do like that idea. Even if it wasn't intended, I think that's a cool way of looking at it. I wish the series had more instances of worlds like visibly deteriorating due to the Heartless presence.

    • @abiean222
      @abiean222 3 месяца назад

      this explanation can also explain why the KH1 worlds are so small compared to the same KH2 worlds. the Hercules world might just literally be the sky coliseum in KH1 and the city of Agrabah has shrunk because the heartless are eating the world. Christmas town and the other holidays might not even exist anymore in the nightmare before Christmas world.

    Im surprised we never got to visit Atlantica in BBS because of that scene you mentioned. The fact that they gave that little get-scolded-by-your-friend's-dad warning scene to a badass king like Triton in Atlantica rather than, say, Zeus in Olympus (another equally if not more badass king) or idk someone in Neverland, places we visited in BBS. Like if Ariel was a princess of heart and we saw Terra take her heart under Maleficent's control or something like he did sleeping beauty and then Triton would have a strong dislike for "those who carry keys". It would probably be something that made more sense and was less stupid than that but you get the point lol Im just making an example

    Wonderland is quintessential Disney, it's heavily featured in the parks, was something Walt loved toting around and the VA of Alice/Wendy revised her roles in voice acting until 2005 after Kingdom Hearts and the Unbirthday edition of the Alice In Wonderland DVD, which, funny enough was probably a tradition started due to the parks themselves.
    Kathryn Beaumont was visiting Disneyland and noticed that her voice wasn't used on the Teacups ride when it was obviously supposed to be Alice talking. Think she ended up asking why Walt didn't ask her to do it, and then they had her record for the teacups and later the ride at Disneyland and from there on out.

    I think the idea with Jafar summoning the Keyhole is that, by leaving it out there in the open, it would have become a beacon for the Heartless. Had Sora and his friends not sealed it as soon as they did, the implication seems to be that Agrabah would have fallen to darkness in short order. Jafar would have then used his last wish to secure himself as ruler over the now darkness-infested Agrabah, possibly keeping it from being lost entirely. Assuming this is more than just my conjecture, the story could have admittedly done a much better job framing it all. One possible way would have been by showing the Heartless attempting to swarm the Keyhole after the battle with Genie-Jafar, Sora sealing it just in time. Overall, though, that was the implication I got from those scenes.

    For me atlantica in KH1 was a world that introduced magic as a viable playthrough method cuz before this world i just swung my keyblade and only used cure. One day recently i was replaying the game and i thought i would change my equipment and keyblade to be magic mostly and i was surprised that the world became must faster and more enjoyable. After this i started really thinking about using magic more and not worry about have a full mp bar all the time. I just wish we had secret bosses for each world instead of just agrabah and neverland. - Well, at the very least, Triton did leave a convenient block to build the lore of the Keyblade War, and eventually for Cross.
    - So, now that Tarzan is officially public domain, think there's any chance Deep Jungle will get at least a mention in the series from here on out? Also, I feel like Clayton was sort of a parallel to Riku as well - much like with the Destiny Islands, there weren't any Heartless in Deep Jungle until Clayton's strong desire attracted them there.
    - If you think about it, Riku in Monstro is playing the role of a naughty boy - something Pinocchio was cautioned against being.

    Ironically as a little kid I really liked 100 Acre Wood because, as a scaredy-cat who was always way too anxious whenever I had to fight enemies, I found this world to be a nice break from all that. So it was nice to listen to some relaxing music and just have Sora walk around the gardens and woods. I was also a big fan of exploring the various worlds so I liked looking around. That and Pooh and his friends are so adorable.
    On top of that, I was actually excited to see Atlantica because at the time "The Little Mermaid" was my favorite Disney movie and I just really wanted to see Sora, Donald, and Goofy interacting with Ariel.
    All that said, I can see how these worlds would seem frustrating, especially if you're more concerned with other game elements. And even though I thought it was neat that Sora could swim around as a merman (merboy?) controlling him was really difficult. And yeah, getting past that current was a nightmare.

    Alice and Wonderland might have been something nobody was looking forward to, but the actual mind-bending Wonderland-y things that happen in the level - With Sora changing size, manipulating the environment, and flipping the gravity - This world was actually a great showcase for the game, while keeping it visually simple and easy to navigate. Kid me remembers how fun solving some of the puzzles for the first time was - Wonderland might be a bad choice, but I'd honestly have it way better on the list, just for the spectacle.

    Completely unconfirmed, but I’ve looked at the “boxiness” of Wonderland as a tribute to the original Disneyland dark ride. The painted flats and location picks are a dead ringer. Also, the “upside down bizarre room” was a scene from the original 1958 version of the ride.

    What would happen if the crocodile ate Sora?
    Game over? Sora loses at least half of his body? Or he gets stuck in the stomach and mutates, or something stupid like that, if you want to regard that as canon.
    #13: 100 Acre Wood.
    Eeyorenort: "No matter. Most likely would've fallen anyway."
    "Once the initial charm of seeing these characters and this world wears off, and unfortunately that happened about seventeen years ago, for the most part..." So, immediately? That's rough.
    I like how the worlds weren't totally isolated in the first game. Stuff like Alice and Jasmine getting abducted, team-ups between the villains, and King Triton lecturing Sora about the Keyblade give a sense of world-building, where even if the worlds don't totally know about one another, it's clear that they were all part of the same world once and they still impact one another. Nowadays, however, there isn't a lot of effort put into connecting each world into the overarching mythology. Each world has been largely self-contained lately, and the most connectivity we get is a few shots of Monstropolis doors that lead to other worlds.

    Commenting on a 3 year old video but i have to say, wonderland is... wonderland! It's a super classic setting from a story about a kid jumping into a hole and taking a weird surrealist/psychedelic trip to another world where things have their own logic. The relevance to KH and Sora's journey is striking so it is understandable that they had it be the first disney world you visit. Also, it's a super classic movie. To a little kid at that time i can see why Tarzan was more recognizable, but in the grand scheme of things i think Tarzan is objectively less significant compared to Alice in Wonderland, in terms of cultural impact at least.
    Cool video and channel by the way! I won't binge yet as i've only recently got back into the series after only playing KH1 as a kid and i want to avoid spoilers but i'm gonna definitely sub in the future (i'm still in KH 2).

    Did you know that the original VA for Alice in that movie also voiced her here in this game. *Looks her up* Wow she was in her 60s at the time, yet still managed to sound like a little girl. She was also the voice of Wendy in Peter Pan and voiced her in the game too.

    I genuinely can't WAIT to unlock both the Hundred Acre Wood and Atlantica every time I play. My grandmother's favorite Disney film was Winnie the Pooh, and I have a lot of fond memories of her with that world. Plus, I was OBSESSED with The Little Mermaid as a 90s kid whose sister was also named Ariel. xD I love all things mermaids and mermen to this day, and always look forward to being part of that world while swimming around and talking with Ariel.

    I watched this video yesterday and didn't think to comment till today.
    I forget exactly what you say. But it's about Pooh world. I wanted to say the swing actually is my favorite minigame. It's simple and short. The story leading up to it is pretty nice, too. I think all the little Pooh tasks in this game aren't very fun. I even share a lot of the reasons you have.

    I just recently started playing KH1 as I got the All in One package as a birthday gift and dang. The last level I played was Monstro and man you have the emotions of the story fresh down pat. I was like, "OH HELL YEAH" When Riku helped out and I was hoping that would solve everything even though I already know it wouldn't. I'm surprised how quickly I was able to attach myself to the main characters of a weird fanfiction of a story. Literally every time I see Riku I get so relieved and kinda excuse his bad actions because I just want him back, which is so weird to be because I only hung out with him for about an hour and he didn't let me name it GuchiBoat.

    Hi! Terk actually does kinda have a voice "line" in that scene with Donald and Goofy, as she and Donald both scream at each other in shock. Audrey Wasilewski, who has voiced Terk elsewhere, is listed among the Disney Character voice talents in the credits in the English language version of the game, while Yuko Doi is credited as voicing Terk in the Japanese version.

    Ever since I known the KH series, one of my favorite things about was simply “meddling” around the Disney Worlds like you’re Doctor Who. Sora/You go to these worlds and essential go through a self-insert fanfic with Sora/You being a badass fighting evil.

    Alice in Wonderland is one of the great classics of children's literature and as such is a perfectly fine inclusion in a Kingdom Hearts game. I also think the world design is supposed to be like a pop up book so to me the way it looks is also fine.

    I swear I had the same sentiment as a kid about Sora asking if Tarzan had seen Riku or Kairi. I remember distinctly thinking "WHO CARES ABOUT THEM, THEY'RE POINTLESS SIDE CHARACTERS YOU'LL NEVER SEE AGAIN, ASK ABOUT DONALD AND GOOFY, THIS GAME IS ONLY ABOUT THE DISNEY CHARACTERS" and I'm glad to see how correct I ended up being in the long run with this series........ :D
